Dan’s professional career now spans over three decades, and his
influence has been felt in the worldwide magic scene. He is a
performer, inventor, author and lecturer — an acknowledged expert
in the field of magic. As a teacher, Dan’s lessons, lectures and magic
creations have had a direct influence on magic notables such as Jeff
Justice, Rudy Coby, Jerry Camaro, Guy Hollingworth, and yes, even
superstar David Copperfield. Because Dan has performed and lectured in over 12
countries, has released instructional videotapes in English and French, has published
hundreds of books, manuscripts and magazine articles in over six languages, his influence
has reached countless other magicians that even he doesn’t know about! Dan Garrett’s
name appears on thousands of magic-related web sites. There are very few serious
followers of the world of magic who haven’t heard of Dan Garrett.
One of the highlights of the professional career of Dan Garrett was a live appearance
on CNN Headline News in August of 2002. This featured performance and interview
went out to millions of homes world-wide.
In 2010, Dan performed magic on WXIA-TV 11-Alive Morning News with news anchor
Karyn Greer and popular weatherman Chesley McNeil. He publicized the 2010 Society of
American Magicians national convention which was held in Atlanta in the summer, as well
as performed several amazing feats of prestidigitation.
NOTICE
Our future meetings will be held in the chapel instead of the
social hall. When you enter the building from the front entrance
make a right down the hallway to the chapel.
From the
President
First, I would like to thank everyone who has wished me well on my recovery.
Cancer and a heart attack wasn't anything I desired for the summer, but, with
everyone's prayers I'll keep on trucking.
Last month's meeting saw a nice turnout and I think everyone agreed that our
member performers entertained us well. A beautiful Zombie ball routine capped a
perfect evening of magic.
I'm looking forward to seeing all of our members at our meeting/lecture on
September 6th. The lecture by Dan Garrett should be great and filled with
something for everyone.
Let's all encourage our members to attend and maybe reach out to those that we
haven't seen in a while. This will be our first meeting of a new Season of great
magic and lectures...... we have just a few items of business to discuss. As always,
I intend to keep the meeting short so that we have plenty of time for the
lecture.
An important moment of business will be a short Broken Wand ceremony for past
President Al Loeffler. His passing was a shock and his contribution to the Ring
extraordinary.
August is our members performing month and we attracted one of the
largest crowds in a while. As is our custom now, we have individual workshops
from 6 to 7PM followed by announcements and what is happening in the
community. For example, Bob Banta described the summer “Magic Camp” held
at the Gulfgate Library. Kids collaborate to put on shows using cups and balls, a
three card monte routine and card detection.
Our master of ceremonies, Jonti, introduced the first act, a father and
son routine. Gale Molovinsky and his son, Daren with the able assistance of
Mattie Kingsley, demonstrated the Voodoo Doll predictor and die penetration
through solid blocks in a tube. Gale, introduced us to 3 apparatuses: the soldier
that moves magically from one compartment to another, the blocks of San Yen
– 3 tea chests with a ribbon running through them - and the disappearing wine
placed in a closed cabinet. This last trick is neat. The goblet when put into the
cabinet activates a self-priming siphon that moves the wine out of the goblet
and into a secret container in the cabinet.
Bob Banta came on next. A member of the audience chose a card, the
four of clubs, after which, Bob told a long and intricate story winding up with a
large picture of the Mona Lisa holding the four of clubs. Jose Reyes
performed the floating ball act beautifully. Some thought it was sexy when the
ball kept pushing against the black scarf, but I took it in stride. Steven
Gottschalk manipulated the cards so fast, my camera blurred the image. And
Wes Meltzer showed he has definitely mastered the rope and ring series plus
several moves I can only describe as illusions with rope. Jonti ended the
performances with an invisible trick that reversed expectations. Wes won the
50/50 and the evening drifted into conversations, clean-up and departures.
Trick of the Month.
Prior Commitment Simon Aronson
Setup from top down: Nine indifferent cards; a face up Joker with the number
43 on the back; eighteen indifferent cards; a face up joker with the number 18
on the back.
Performance: Have a spectator on the right and on the left.
1. Ask spectator on right to cut off about a third of the deck, look at bottom
card of cut, remember it, and place packet on table.
2. As spectator on left to cut into bottom part of the remaining cards, look at
bottom card of cut, remember it, and place packet on table.
Note: There are now three packets on the table.
3. Place packet from spectator on right on middle packet and then packet from
spectator on left on top of those.
4. Pick up cards and place to left of table getting ready for a spread.
5. Explain that you have no way of knowing where their cards are since you did
not know where they were going to cut the cards. However, there are friends
within the deck that will help you to find their cards.
6. Ribbon spread the cards from left to right revealing two faces up Jokers.
7. Separating the cards at the Joker locations and moving the Jokers forward
creates three packets on the table.
8. Combine these packets with the left one on the middle packet and the right
packet on top of those.
9. Pick up the Joker on the left and provide the patter you like but revealing
that the Joker let you know that the card from the spectator on the left is
eighteen (18) cards down. Count to the selection and before the revelation ask
the spectator to name their card.
10. Pick up the other Joker and as previously tell spectator that you were told
that their card is forty three (43) down in the deck.
11. Start the count at nineteen (19) taking in to consideration the first count
of 18. Count the cards to 42 and ask the spectator to name their card and
reveal the selection.
12. Explain that you could not have done this effect without the help of the
Jokers who knew all along where you were going to cut the cards. Turn over
the jokers and reveal the numbers 18 and 43 on their backs.
A magician looking for a new trick went to a newly opened magic shop. The clerk handed
him an ordinary-looking pair of glasses and said, "Only $1,000." The magician was
shocked. "A thousand bucks for a pair of glasses?"
"Try 'em on; they're special glasses."
He tried them on and suddenly the clerk was naked. So were the female shoppers! He
removed the glasses and everyone was clothed. "Sold!", he said.
Riding the bus home, he put the glasses on again. The bus driver was naked and all the
passengers were naked! He took them off and everyone was clothed again. When he got
home, he put his new glasses on before opening the front door. When he entered the
living room, there on the sofa were his wife and his best friend, naked! He took the
glasses off, but they were still naked.
"Damn!" he said. "A thousand bucks for a magic trick and in 30 minutes it's already
broken!"
