Notes from the Editor
In the spirit of improving this Newsletter I am hoping to
include colour pages into the May edition.
For greatest effect it makes sense for colour (which
incidentally almost doubles the print cost) to be used for
photos, and particularly those pertinent to the Village.
Despite the joyous fact that we seem to be getting a larger
number and a wider variety of articles we don’t get many
photos.
So my plea to you is to send in your photos—the topic isn’t
important so long as its relevant to Long Whatton.
LONG WHATTON COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION
The LWCA is responsible for managing both the Community Centre, and a sizeable
trust fund.
Many of the members have been holding positions of responsibility for many years and
are looking to stand down at the next AGM in March 2013.
We are seeking new members of the community to take over these vital roles.
No experience necessary as support and guidance will always be available, but what
we do need is enthusiasm, and plenty of it, to ensure this important local facility is
maintained.
The committee is in URGENT need of a secretary who’s main role is to take the
minutes at the monthly meetings.
If you are interested in putting something back into the community and can spare 1 or 2
hours per month we would be delighted to hear from you.
Please call Kim on 01509 843442.
NATURE TRAIL
Don’t forget – ‘Fogs in March frosts in May’. Up to the day of writing these
notes, 12 March, we have already had two good fogs – and whilst talking to
Andy Barnes on 12 March at around 6pm he mentioned it had turned a touch
cool and it was already looking a touch misty.
Here’s an interesting report via Pat and David Griffith of Piper Farm. It was
from Barbara and Ken Crowden who once farmed Mitchell Springs Farm along
the Ashby Road. They were travelling home one night along a road near Belton,
when they saw a Fox in the middle of the road. It seemed to be in some
difficulty running along the road. They ran after it, then realised it had its face
fast in a large plastic milk crate. With some difficulty they managed to free it –
and off it went into the night.
On 1 March I heard two Green Woodpeckers calling almost all day; one was
calling from The Falcon orchard, the other was in the Ash and Willow trees
further along the Wash-pit stream towards the Wash-pit. Sure enough, down
came the rain all day on 3 March – and very heavy it was at times. Hence the
other names of the Green Woodpecker – Rainbird, Yaffle.
Shirley Blythe of Barnfield Close reports a pair of Redpolls in her garden; a
couple of days later they were sighted by Mick Downs also of Barnfield Close.
Also, a single Tawny Owl seen at Piper Farm. This bird can be seen most
nights on the roof of the cowshed. Many people in the village have reported
sightings of Ladybirds in their gardens, in fact too many to mention. Some are
in clusters on bushes, gates, fencing, driveways, tree trunks – even after hard
frosts they are still there. It is a great pity these creatures were not about last
summer to get rid of the aphids that were numerous until the frosts.
Racheal McDonnnell hen eggs are in the news again, this time it’s an egg without
a yolk; this egg would have suited me because I never eat the yolk of an
egg. Strange but true.
14
On 27 February I noticed a Starling that was sitting eggs; almost every
morning this bird came off the nest, which was in the roof of a house, under
a loose slate. It always came off about the same time – onto a bird table for
food, then to a bird bath, back to the roof for a little preening, then back to
the nest.
David Allsopp who farms at Rempstone tells me that he goes shopping at
Tesco, Shelthorpe every Friday morning around dawn, and most mornings
he sees around 60 Pied Wagtails on the car park, they seem to be feeding on
something, but I don’t know what; just like those I saw on the road at Barnfield
Close during the snowy weather earlier this year.
One Saturday morning in late February, I saw a pair of Canada Geese fly at
rooftop level as they flew up the village towards West End Usually these
birds are seen in V formation, in very large flocks. These two must have
been lost.
The mist I mentioned at the beginning of these notes was only a little misty
but according a to Leicestershire saying it could still harm early vegetables
and flowers. From the start of this year my “Weather Wisdom” notes will
all be of “Leicestershire saying” only.
It is several months now since I have seen a Kestrel near my poultry houses,
at one time I could see it there several times a day. The reason could be
that now my poultry have gone – so has the Kestrel. Now that there is no
poultry feed, mice and rats have disappeared, but not the Sparrowhawks;
quite often I see these birds working the high hedges in search of food.
When nesting time comes they will take even more. Moles seem to be less
active this time round, usually in March some moleheaps appear, yet I haven’t
seen any since the snow earlier this year.
Weather Wisdom:
April weather, rain and sunshine come together
From the pen of The Grumpy Old Wheelers
[Have we not spent enough time staring into that empty
pond yet? Amazing, he’s ready to go at last] The road now goes
downhill to the entrance to Woodhouse Farm then uphill. Amazingly
I can keep up with Mike here. [Well you’ve just had a long rest
haven’t you.] Those old legs of his must be starting to give out
[Not a bit of it, just getting warmed up]. For a short stretch up
this hill is a small area to the left which will be covered in bluebells
in Spring. At the top of the hill we get a good view of the 2
new wind turbines at the Airport. Bearing in mind the sole purpose
of the Airport is to encourage what is widely claimed to be the
most polluting form of transport I find it hypocritical that they
should wax so lyrically about their efforts to make ground operations
carbon neutral. [And of course Keith never takes a plane to
go on holiday!]
From here the road falls steeply to the junction with the
road which goes past Diseworth and on to Long Whatton. With a
good view either way, and if nothing is coming of course, we go at
breakneck speed in an attempt to light the 40mph sign on the
right. Mike has failed miserably in his attempts but I managed it
once. Mike has tried to convince me it was triggered by the speeding
Merc overtaking me at the time but I’m having none of it. Envy
is a terrible think Mike. [Yeah, yeah yeah.] The Union Jack (a new
one at last) on the side of the house on the corner of The Woodcroft
tells us what we already know, if the wind is with us or
against us.
16
It’s now a gentle downhill, at least to the A42 bridge, and with a
following breeze we can get some serious speed up (at least it’s serious
for me, it’s fairly gentle for Mike I think). [Yup.] This is a narrow
road and we usually cycle two abreast for our own safety. It
stops idiots trying to overtake us at speed around the bends when
there’s another vehicle coming in the opposite direction. So if you’ve
been stuck behind us, now you know why.
[Can I explain the theory. If we go in single file it takes longer to
get past two bikes that may be several meters apart and cars may
be tempted to squeeze through and could put us in the ditch. By
staying two abreast, yes you can’t squeeze past but when it’s safe
you can get by more quickly. Just treat us like a couple of horses
and pass “slow & wide”. I’ll resist comparing the driving styles of
the sexes but just guess for yourselves who passes flat out, but
probably giving plenty of room and who waits patiently, passes nice
and slow but is so keen not to cross the white line that we get
clipped by a wing mirror.]
I normally manage to keep close to Mike over the A42 bridge then
it’s down into the village, trying to remember to avoid the 5 pieces
of traffic calming street furniture that have recently appeared.
They’ve been only of limited success in my opinion. Then its home
where I collapse in a heap and slowly recover. I hear Mike hammering,
banging and grinding in his workshop. Where does he get his energy
from. [It’s called being fit Keith. You should try it sometime].
( Still don’t see why you can’t ride single file on busy roads…..Ed. )
SCHOOL NEWS
The school grounds
We have recently had a problem with youngsters from the village climbing
on to the roof of the school. Not only can this cause a great deal of dam-
age, but it is obviously a very dangerous thing to do and we have contacted
most of the parents of those involved. We will pass on the names of any-
one who continues to go on to the roof to the local authority, who will is-
sue a ban from the school grounds. We think it is important to allow the
grounds to continue to be used by the village. We know of no other
schools where this happens and youngsters who use our grounds must un-
derstand that it is a privilege and not a right, and as such we expect eve-
ryone to follow the simple requests that are clearly signposted. We ask
that all ball games are played on the field or playground and not on the
car park. We have suffered damage to pipes and a window will eventually
be broken. We would like to notify all users that the school grounds (field,
playground and car park) are only to be used in the hours of daylight, un-
less previously arranged with ourselves for a special event. We really ap-
preciate the help we get from those in the village who look after and keep
an eye on the school by letting us know what is happening, thank you for
your good citizenship.
Let’s Create a Buzz in Long Whatton
With a stretch in the evening, crocuses and snowdrops popping their heads
above the parapet and birds staking out their territory - all the signs are
there that Spring is well underway. But spare a thought for one of nature's
little wonders - the humble honey bee - which faces an uncertain future as it
ventures out into the open. Ravaged by a mite called varroa and weakened
by a toxic environment of agro-chemicals, bee numbers have fallen off a
cliff in recent years. Britain is far from immune to this pretty much worldwide
phenomenon and the message is clear: bees need help. And when you
consider one in three mouthfuls that we eat are as a result of bee pollination,
suddenly it's not just about them; it's about us too.
Although there has been a whole-hearted response from people up and
down the land - with the British Beekeepers Association (BBKA) inundated
with new recruits - each and every community has a role to play in helping
beleaguered bees. Common sense tips like buying organic food, avoid
spraying insecticides when soapy water will do and generally spreading the
word are important. But if you really want to go a stage further, now is the
time to consider purchasing some nectar-rich plants to add to your garden.
Here's a few that will have bees doing a merry dance:
Crocuses, snowdrops, mahonia, lavender, rosemary, sage, catmint, primroses,
solomon's seal, thyme, hebe, Viper's bugloss, campanula, ornamental
thistle, sea holly, viburnum, phacelia, verbena, old fashioned geraniums,
salvia, penstemon, lupins, hollyhocks, comfrey, echinacea, sedum, ivy,
woodbine, weigelia, philadelphus, cotoneaster, fruit trees, gorse,
broom, heather and scabious. These are some off the top of my head and
garden centres will no doubt advise on many more.
Another good tip, is to relax your mowing regime and let white clover appear
on the lawn. Bees love white clover and honey bees love red clover
even more.
Give bees a fighting chance - get out the trowel and spade. Happy planting!
TRANS AFRICA CHALLENGE
On 8th March, Martin Collins, MD of Commercial Vehicle Solutions (CVS) and a
Long Whatton resident, will take part in a gruelling rally across Africa to support
the charities Temwa in Malawi and Top Banana in Botswana. This mission will
involve teams driving six 4x4s across South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and finishing
up at Temwa's projects in Malawi. When they arrive in Malawi, CVS will be
donating two of the 4x4s to Temwa and the remaining two to Top Banana. The
main challenges will be the distances they will have to travel per day (in total nearly
3000kms over 9 days) and the terrain (impassable roads due to the rainy season)
The objective is to help build a sustainable future for the people of Malawi through
community-based projects in health education, sustainable agriculture & forestry,
schools support and skills training. Both charities work with adults & children who
have been affected by HIV/AIDS and it’s far reaching consequences.
So far the challenge has raised nearly £70,000 which they hope to increase during
the rally and when the teams return.
In addition to this CVS will be holding a Charity Ball on 13th October in aid of
both charities.
You can follow the rally on twitter @TransAfricaCh or check out
Dear Friends,
GOD’S GIFT - OUR RESPONSE
Talking about Money is difficult. As Christians we believe we shouldn’t be concerned
about earthly things, and yet we are as human as the next person, needing the security
that money gives us.
Here in All Saints, we recognise that everyone has money worries, from the apparently
richest in our community (whose wealth is often already allocated), to the less fortunate,
some of whom will be desperately keeping up appearances.
Why then are we writing about money? Because Jesus talked more about money than
he did about sex.
Billy Graham said on a number of occasions: “Give me five minutes with a person’s
cheque book, and I will tell you where their heart is.” What does your cheque book, or
bank statement, say about you and your priorities?
The 2008 UK Giving report shows that over half the money given to charities in the
UK is given by the 2.1m committed givers who give over £100 a month. The majority
of this group is Christian. It is vital that we continue to give even when times are hard.
Not only because Churches and Charities depend on our money, but because as we
give we respond to the generosity of God who gives us all that we have and all that we
are.
"Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows
generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give whatever you have decided
in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful
giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times,
having all that you need, you will abound in every good work."
2 Corinthians 9 v6-8.
In this economic crisis, we are not begging for your money. Instead we are asking for
your time. Time to think about what your cheque book says about your interests and
world views, and time to think and give thanks to God for all that you have received.
All Men Welcome
Life to the full
At a street meeting, a young Salvation Army drummer was testifying about his past. 'Before
I became a Christian I used to drink and gamble, but I don't do that any more. I used to
swear and womanise, but I don't do that any more either. Come to think of it all I do now is
stand on the same old street corner and beat the same old drum!'
Ever felt like that? You get up, go to work, come home, eat dinner, watch TV, drop into
bed, get up next day and do it all again? Like Solomon, sometimes you can feel like
'Everything is meaningless' (Ecclesiastes 12:8 NLT). But it doesn't have to be that way. Francis
Schaeffer said, 'Man has a purpose, to be in a relationship with God when he forgets his
purpose he forgets who he is and what life means.'
There's more to life than beating the same old drum day after day. Jesus said '...I have
come that they may have life, and have it to the full.'(John 10:10 NIV) and the first step is
acknowledging that he died to show you the way back to God. Step two is recognising you
need a personal relationship with Him. Step three is using the Bible as a blueprint for purpose
and fulfilment. It's the only book that answers the important questions, 'Who am I?'
and 'Why am I here?' You're not 'a mistake' as one woman said after discovering her mother
had tried to abort her. In God's eyes you have great value, and today He offers you 'life
to the full.'
