‘Fairtrade’ applies to goods with the FAIRTRADE
Mark. Ethically sourced goods that don’t carry the
Mark are described as being ‘fairly traded’.
Some products cannot carry the FAIRTRADE
Mark, as no agreed criteria exist for them. These
fairly traded products include handicrafts, paper,
soapstone, wood and metal items. It is best to buy
such items from BAFTS registered shops (British
Association for Fair Trade Shops) as they vet their
suppliers. This Directory lists some BAFTS shops/
outlets using BAFTS suppliers to help you.
It is my great pleasure
to welcome you to
the second County
Durham Fairtrade
Directory, which has
been produced thanks
to the collaboration
of the Durham Cooperative
Membership
Committee, Durham
County Council and
Durham City Fair
Trade Partnership.
As well as articles about Co-
operative Membership activities and local Fairtrade matters, this edition
brings you a whole host of cafes, shops, independent local retailers,
restaurants, museums and attractions who are proud to serve or sell
products with the FAIRTRADE Mark.
In less than 20 years, there are now over 4,500 products with the
FAIRTRADE Mark. This certifi cation is your guarantee that each product
has been independently verifi ed by the Fairtrade Foundation, and gives
a better deal to marginalised producers in developing countries.
This Directory also lists outlets where fairly-traded goods such
as handicrafts, paper and household items can be found, which are
outside the current guidelines of the FAIRTRADE Mark. I do hope that
you enjoy this publication and will join us in supporting Fairtrade within
County Durham. Look out for our mobile website which will be available
soon to bring you all this information at your fi ngertips!
however, we cannot guarantee that all information is correct. We recommend that you contact the
Fairtrade Directory
Five Years of
Fairtrade in Durham
Since May 2007 Durham has been proud to
declare itself a Fairtrade City…
In May 2007, Durham City
achieved Fairtrade status
for the very fi rst time. I
was delighted to have
spearheaded the Fairtrade
Steering Group which had worked
towards this certifi cation, and am
still at the helm as our renewal
takes us from August 2012 until
August 2014. A lot has happened
in those fi ve years, so let’s see
what changes have occurred and
what challenges lie ahead.
In 2006, we worked alongside
the Durham City Council and were
able to put on lots of events and
really gain good momentum. It was
also a time when Fairtrade really
seemed to get big, many retailers
and catering outlets were keen to
get on-board, and saw the message
which Fairtrade carries as a way of
showing themselves to be caring
“Our cause is
as worth fi ghting
for as it was back
in 2006”
and socially responsible businesses.
Thus our initial status and renewal
the following year showed great
depth and expansion across the
community.
When Durham City Council
ceased in 2009, we were fortunate
to maintain the support of Durham
County Council, but with the remit of
starting to spread the work across
4
the County. A second Fairtrade
County Steering Group was put
in place, and I managed fairly
successfully to spin out events
into some other towns of County
Durham, whilst ensuring that
Durham did not lose out.
In the last couple of years,
recession has hit and persisted.
Yet we have continued to work
well alongside Durham County
Council when opportunities
present themselves, such as in
the production of phone apps for
a revised Fairtrade Directory. Our
recent status renewal showed that
some businesses were no longer
using Fairtrade products, and our
Hazel Dobson, Gateway World
Shop and Kathryn Sygrove,
Durham City Fairtrade Partnership
catering and retail outlets only just
held their own. But we had still
managed some exciting events
which had raised the profi le of
Fairtrade across the community.
As I look to the future, I know
that the economy is still in need of a
massive boost and that our Steering
Group will have to dig deep to fi nd
new supporters for Fairtrade. Yet
our belief in the positives which
Fairtrade brings - a better wage,
better work conditions, a social
premium, regular sustained work for
disadvantaged and impoverished
producers - remains unswerving and
our cause as worth fi ghting for as it
was back in 2006.

Fairtrade Directory
Beginners’ Guide to
Fairtrade
Find out all you need to know about Fairtrade,
and how you can help to change the world…
Why do we need
Fairtrade?
❝The small farmers and workers
who grow our coffee, tea, cocoa,
cotton and bananas often don’t
get the money they deserve for
their crop.
They can suffer because of this
and it can lock them into a cycle of
poverty. And when world commodity
prices fall, as they have done over
the last 30 years, it’s these growers
who feel the pinch fi rst. Their income
can drop to levels that don’t even
cover production costs, making it
hard to provide for their families and
maintain their farms. This is where
Fairtrade comes in.❞
Okay, so what can I
do about it?
❝As consumers, we have the
power to change things, and the
power to make a difference to
growers and workers in the
southern hemisphere.
When you buy a product bearing the
FAIRTRADE Mark, you can be sure
that the farmers have received a
fair price for their produce. Farmers
in the Fairtrade scheme get a price
that covers the cost of sustainable
production, no matter how low the
market goes. Fairtrade also requires
long-term relationships with buyers,
helping growers to plan for the
future. In short, trade can be fair.❞
Fairtrade Premium —
what’s that?
❝Producer organisations receive
an additional Fairtrade Premium
of, for example, ten cents per
pound of coffee.
The farmers themselves decide how
this extra money is spent. It
can be used to build everything from
schools and health centres to social
facilities, or to enable growers to
improve productivity or reduce their
reliance on a single commodity.❞
How are standards
maintained?
❝Trade terms, contracts and
working conditions are checked
regularly, as is the use of funds
from the Fairtrade Premium.
This work is carried out by Fairtrade
International (FLO), which is
the body responsible for setting
Fairtrade standards and certifying
producer organisations.❞
So what Fairtrade
products can I buy?
❝Over 3,000 products carry the
FAIRTRADE Mark in the UK.
See the listings at the back of this
directory for details of stockists.❞
Seven million reasons
to buy Fairtrade…
❝The Fairtrade market in the UK
reached an estimated retail value
of £799m million in 2009.
Globally, consumers spent around
€3.4 billion on Fairtrade products in
2009, benefi ting around 7.5 million
people in 58 developing countries.❞
What is the
FAIRTRADE Mark?
The FAIRTRADE
Mark is the only
independent
consumer
guarantee that
disadvantaged
producers in the developing
world are getting a better deal.
By choosing to buy Fairtrade,
you can be sure that you’re
making a difference.
To Garment
The lifecycle of a cotton plant
1Who farms cotton?
Over 100 million households are involved in the production of
cotton in 70 countries. Fairtrade reaches 7.5 million people
– farmers, workers and their families – in 58 countries, so they
can enjoy a better standard of living. There are 38 certifi ed cotton
producer groups in India, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Mali, Senegal,
Brazil, Egypt, Argentina, Kyrgyzstan and Peru. West Africa and
India are the biggest cotton-producing areas.
2How do you farm cotton?
For cotton to grow from seed to picking takes six months. Farming
cotton is hard manual work, and 80-90% of cotton farmers in India
still use bullocks to plough their fi elds. After ploughing, farmers
plant their seeds, which are always bought new every year. The cotton will
begin to fl ower about 30 days after planting, and 50 days later, the cotton
fruits, called bolls, appear. Around 40 to 50 days after that, the bolls burst
open and fl uffy fi bres appear. It’s at this point that the cotton can be picked.
5What can you do to help?
Simple – you can buy products made with Fairtrade
certifi ed cotton! There are hundreds of items that use
Fairtrade cotton rather than mass-produced cotton. It’s
important to support these small cotton farmers as they farm on
a small scale and by hand, and are often forced to take whatever
price they can for their cotton – even if this means making a loss.
4Production
The cotton is then spun into yarn,
and after this, the thread is woven
into cloth. At this point the cotton
is then ready for dying, cutting, embroidering,
making into garments and anything else!
3Transporting and sorting
Next, the picked cotton is transported to traders.
From there it is sorted and the unsuitable bolls are
removed. It’s then taken for ‘ginning’ – a process
that separates the fl uffy lint from the seed. Once the seed
has been removed, the cotton lint goes into the pala house
where it’s sorted by hand for any bits of cotton that are
no good. This is a hazardous job for the workers, as they
breathe the cotton fi bres which can get stuck in their lungs.
Fairtrade Directory
The great cotton
Many cotton farmers live in
poverty on less than $2 a day.
The global cost for cotton has
been unstable for a long time
and farmers have been severely
affected by the falling prices.
Cotton farmers in developing
countries are under pressure
from the rising costs of fuel,
pesticides and insecticides. This
means few farmers can cover the
cost of production, because they
can’t pass these costs on when
cotton is sold at such low prices.
They’re also competing
against farmers in the US, the EU
and China, who are subsidised
and also overproduce cotton,
which they can sell cheaper than
farmers who are struggling to
survive without handouts. When
their huge volumes of cotton are
dumped on world markets, prices
are driven down and small-scale
farmers can’t compete.
Combined, the US and EU
have spent $32bn on their cotton
farmers over the past nine years.
The effect has been to dampen
down cotton prices for West
African farmers, restricting their
ability to trade their way out of
poverty. This means the least
developed countries in the world
have lost a total of $250m each
year as a result of these actions.
Take action to stop trade
distorting cotton subsidies –
Durham City Fair
Trade Partnership
Meet the people behind the name
Durham City
Fair Trade
Partnership
started off
in November 2006 as
Durham City Fairtrade
Steering Group, and its
members comprised a
Council representative,
local committed citizens,
school teachers and
Sixth Form pupils,
representatives from local
Fairtrade shops, students,
Durham University
staff, a handful of local
business people, a variety
of Church-goers from
different denominations,
and a Co-op Durham
Committee member.
Six years later, we still
have members from most of
the above groups, although
our numbers have thinned
out a bit. We continue to work
well together, planning future
activities and areas to work on, and
maintaining links with supportive
contacts as often as possible. Being
in the North East, we are very
to support them by holding “Big
Brews” (buying packs from them
to serve tea, coffee and Fairtrade
biscuits in return for donations to
pay to their charitable arm, Traidcraft
We have held an array of other
events, from Fairtrade markets to
and discussions, coffee mornings,
Ghanaian producers, and found a
Join The Co-operative
and together we can
help bees make their
big comeback.
Bee populations are in severe
decline all over the world.
Bees pollinate a third of the food
we eat, so without them there
would be no apples, onions or
even tea.
Through our Plan Bee
campaign we’re introducing
lots of new ideas, activities
and initiatives designed to
give bees a fighting chance.
