API and Premium Rods
Both the API and Premium rod lines are manufactured under a strict quality assurance
system in compliance with ISO 9000 standards and certified by API Q1.
Both API and Premium rods
are manufactured from high
quality steel bars.
During the manufacturing
process, all rods are straightened
and inspected by
non-destructive eddy current
control equipment. This
inspection controls 100%
of raw materials in order
to detect transversal and
longitudinal discontinuities.
Before forging, ends are
heated in induction furnaces.
Then rods are full-length
inspected and thermally
treated in specially designed
furnaces in order to obtain
uniform mechanical and
metallurgical properties all
along the rod.
Once rods have been thermally
treated, they undergo a
shot pinning process, where
their external fibers are compressed
and fatigue resistance
is improved. Prior to machining,
rod ends are inspected
in a specially designed bench.
Machining and threading
processes are performed in
state-of-the-art CNC (Computerized
Numeric Control)
equipment which results in
high quality surface finishing
of joint seals.
Threads are obtained by a
cold rolled process, which
ensures a higher fatigue
resistance. Finally, prior to
packing, rods are protected
with an oil-soluble paint,
avoiding rusting during
transportation and storage.
High strength Premium rods
undergo different thermal
treatments, according to the
desired degree in order to
achieve the metallographic
structure and mechanical properties
specified in each case.

Sucker Rods
Higher mechanical strength: fit for high loads
and deep wells.
Normalized and Tempered (UHS-NR) Ultra High
Strength Sucker Rods
The new UHS-NR sucker rod is one of the three alternatives
available for the high strength line. It is manufactured in
AISI 4330 Mod. alloyed steel, with normalized and tempered
heat treatment above API standards, in order to reliably
increase depths and flows using mechanical pumping.
Designed to work with high loads in deep wells, effectively
inhibited against corrosion.
Plus Sucker Rods
The Plus sucker rod is another
alternative for high loads. It’s a
different product that presents
the benefit of binary structure
as a result of a case hardening
heat treatment.
After the high frecuency coil,
quenching is performed via fast
cooling with pressurized water.
This process generates a binary
structure, where the external
case is hardened and the core
remains not hardened.
As the external case has a
lower density (martensite)
than the core, it results in a
permanent state of peripheral
compression, which is the
main factor for its high fatigue
resistance.
It is recommended for services
in deep wells and heavy loads.
In mild sweet (CO 2) and sour
(H 2S) corrosive enviroment an
effective inhibition program
must be followed.
High Resistance, Critical
Service Premium Rod
It is the third alternative in high
strength rods. The product is
made of specially developed
steel to provide the high mechanical
strength required but
reducing the susceptibility to
sulphide stress cracking (SSC)
embrittlement.
SSC susceptibility is a phenomenon
increasingly present in
wells under secondary recovery
by water injection due to
the “souring reservoir” effect.
It is an alloyed steel that
includes chrome-molybdenum,
among others, but is nickel
free. The heat treatment
normalized and tempered.
It is recommended for service
in deep wells with high loads
and to improve performance
inhibition is recommended.
Accessories
A wide range of high quality products to complement
the rod string.
T and Spray Metal
Couplings
Couplings are manufactured
from Tenaris seamless steel
pipes. T and Spray Metal
(SM) couplings combine top
quality steel with a cold
rolled thread that increases
fatigue resistance.
SM couplings provide higher
abrasion and corrosion
strength. Spray Metal is a
superficial hardening process
where a nickel, chrome, boron
and silicon based powder is
applied on the base metal and
is later melt, creating a hard,
dense and uniform surface
with a very low friction factor
and high corrosion strength.
Coupling machining is
carried out in modern
CNC (Computerized
Numeric Control) lathes.
For both types, combination
couplings are produced for
different diameters (subcouplings)
and polished rod
couplings.
Pony Rods
Complying with the same
quality requirements applied
to rods, for each steel grade
there are pony rods available
in 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 feet.
Other lengths are also
manufactured according to
customer’s specifications.
▲ Top quality couplings face finishing, rugosity, flatness
and perpendicularity.
High Resistance Premium Couplings
This product was developed to address customer needs to
solve the growing problem posed by fatigue failures in
couplings, mainly in wells using high strength rods or SH
(slim hole) couplings.
Couplings manufactured from alloyed steel, quenched and
tempered, were designed to work under very high loads during
well service. We recommend their use along with High
Strength Rods or Grade D as well.
Products
for Corrosive
Services
In addition to alloy steel, Tenaris provides metallic, epoxi and
metallic+epoxi coated rods, specially designed for highly critical
services in severely corrosive environments and high loads.
Special Products
Some specific solutions have been developed, targeted
to increase rod string duration and performance.
Rod Guides
Tenaris has a wide range of centralizers and materials, both
for beam pumping and PC pumping, which provide an
effective wear control.
Centralizers are molded onto rods, with the necessary grip
for decreasing the displacement probability, thus becoming
a real tubing and rod protection.
When combined with the use of rod rotators, they also permit
an effective paraffin control. It has been proved that its use in
wells significantly increases tubing and rod run life and reduces
their wear, consequently diminishing pulling interventions and
other operating costs.
Sinker Bars
This element is necessary to
maintain an optimized string
design in order to avoid early
rod failures. It is very effective
to reduce pin and coupling
failures generated due to the
effect of string compression.
Sinker bars are usually located
at the end of the string, over
the pump, in order to keep it
fully under tensile loads during
all pumping cycle. Their use
minimizes compression generated
on rods during the
pumping down stroke.
They are manufactured in
compliance with API standards
in 11/4" to 2" diameters
in steel per customer request,
with 65,000 psi to 90,000 psi
tensile strength. A proprietary
design alternative, 1 1/8"
pin of 7/8" for 2 7/8" tubing
wells for high rates volume is
available.
▲
Polished Rods
With an optimal surface
finishing to ensure an
appropriate sealing in the
stuffing box, Tenaris offers
several types of low and
medium alloy steel polished
rods (AISI 1040, AISI 4140,
AISI 4621).
For corrosive services,
stainless steel in AISI 304
and 316 series are available
besides steels with hard
chrome plated and Spray
Metal coatings. All these
variations are manufactured
in 6 to 36 feet lengths and
1 1/4" and 1 1/2" diameters,
according to customer’s
specifications.
Polyamide injected centralizer fit for working in up to 80°C.
Its improved geometry reduces flow loss and maximizes protection.
