Americans Sweep Canadian Finals Rodeo

Several Canadian Hall-of-Fame barrel racers have multiple national 

championships to their credit, but for the fi rst time, a south-ofthe-border 

cowgirl is starting her own northern dynasty. 

Lisa Lockhart of Oelrichs, S.D., claimed her third Canadian 

championship in seven years on her 47th birthday – and on her 

third different horse – last weekend at the Canadian Finals Rodeo in 

Edmonton, Alberta. She edged Texan Carlee Pierce by just less than 

$3,000 for the title, and Nebraskan Trula Churchill by nearly $6,000. 

“It’s a great rodeo, and I always go in trying to win as much 

money as I possibly can,” said Lockhart. “Sometimes winning a 

championship goes hand in hand with winning a lot of money. But 

the title is how it just happened to turn out. It’s not something I 

expected or even had in my sights. It’s just icing on the cake.” 

Before the Finals, the standings were led by Pierce, who was born 

in Alberta but raised in Oklahoma. In order to let her fi rst-string 

horse, Dillion, and her 6-year-old backup mare, BB, rest up for the 

Wrangler NFR, Pierce hauled two fi nished sorrel 5-year-olds to 

Edmonton. She’d purchased Kiss This Guy (“Tyson”) earlier from 

Ryann Pedone, and just recently bought Im A Royal Design (“Hammer”) 

from Rick and Terri Ford. 

Former champ of the world Lindsay Sears jumped out and won 

the fi rst and second rounds on her backup horse, Ima Guy of 

Honor (“Moe”), while her good horse, Martha, rests up for the 

NFR. Then in Round 3, Pierce shattered the arena record aboard 

Hammer. It was just one of four rounds in which Pierce earned 

paychecks, but that wasn’t enough to hold off Lockhart. 

The wife and mother of three from Oelrichs, S.D., placed in all 

six rounds to win the average by less than three-tenths of a second 

over Sears, who also placed in all six rounds. Lockhart’s take for 

winning the whole shooting match was a championship ring, gold 

watch, trophy saddle, voucher toward a new (Canadian) truck, and 

$49,100. 

“I had a pretty quiet week,” said Lockhart, who rode her fi rststring 

buckskin, An Oakie With Cash (“Louie”) and is known for 

not crunching numbers. “I honestly had no idea the title was even 

possible. Going into that last round, I’m sure my husband knew, so 

I tried to get a hold of him. He didn’t answer when I called – maybe 

on purpose! So I just tried to go do my job.” 

On Sunday afternoon, four different girls still had a shot at the 

title. Lockhart and Louie clocked in at 14.588 to win their fi rst 

round of the week and barely edge Pierce in the earnings column 

(Trula Churchill also had a great rodeo, winning two rounds and 

$45,301 total). 

“Louie is just a model of consistency,” Lockhart said. “I knew 

he’d be there when I needed him.”

Lockhart, like Pierce and Sears, will compete at the NFR in three 

weeks, but unlike them, she wasn’t resting her good horse and running 

her backup in the zero-degree weather at Edmonton. 

“To me, it’s strictly business,” Lockhart said. “Yes, the NFR has 

more money up. But the CFR also has a lot of money. It’s defi nitely 

not Chisum’s forte to run inside, although he has won the Canadian 

championship before. Louie’s had a lot of time off and he needed 

some runs. I’d rather take him to the Canadian Finals than to some 

jackpot. It was a no-brainer.” 

The South Dakotan proved she’s easily able to come from behind 

– which is the same thing she’d like to do in Las Vegas a few weeks 

from now. At the NFR, Churchill and Lockhart will be aboard the 

same horses while Sears and Pierce will step on fresh mounts. All 

four cowgirls, plus fellow qualifi er Lee Ann Rust, can use the CFR 

as an NFR warm-up. 

“You kind of get in a groove and your momentum can help carry 

you down there, I think,” Lockhart said while stuck on icy roads 

trying to get home. “This paycheck eases the fi nancial pressure, 

defi nitely. This time of year is when we fi nally see a profi t; it’s the 

pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, and it makes a big difference. 

I’d do handsprings if I wasn’t so stinkin‘ old.”

JB Quarter Horses Creating 

Legends Bonus Winners 

JB Quarter Horses awarded $10,000 in Creating Legends bonuses 

at their 2012 JB Quarter Horses Futurity, held Nov. 8-10 in Waco, 

Texas, in conjunction with the Elite Extravaganza and Texas Best 

Sale. 

Janna Bean, Hallsville, Texas, rode Firing All My Effort for 

Danny and Laura Forsythe of Natchitoches, La., to the $5,000 fi rstplace 

bonus check and trophy Martin saddle. The 2008 gelding by 

Chasin Firewater out of the Bully Bullion mare Marrazona Bully, 

clocked a 15.929 in the qualifying round of the JB Quarter Horses 

Futurity to earn the bonus. Bred by Joe and Dee Lynn Braman, Firing 

All My Effort (formerly Mr JB 0848) was a $2,800 purchase at 

the fi rst JB Quarter Horses Creating Legends Sale in 2009. 

Firewaters Honey, owned by Lauren and Corley Cox of Cotulla, 

Texas, and ridden by Lauren, took home the $3,000 bonus check 

for second. Bred by Leonard Lyne of George West, Texas, Firewaters 

Honey was consigned by Carl and Barbara Ammerman to the 

2009 Sale. The 2008 gray mare by Chasin Firewater out of Hi Heels 

Honey Too, by Do As You Please, was purchased by Dr. Cliff and 

Lorie Honnas. The mare sold again in the 2010 to the Cox. 

Jane Irick, Stephenville, Texas, and her 2010 sale purchase Miss 

JB 0831 took home $2,000 for third. Bred by the Bramans, Miss JB 

0831 is by Chasin Firewater out of Princess RB, by Peponita.

2012 Candian Finals Rodeo 

Scott Schiffner, the Strathmore Alberta bull rider, spent time with 

Prince William and Kate at the Calgary Stampede, made two trips 

to China as an ambassador for Canadian rodeo and the Stampede, 

extended his record number of Canadian Finals Rodeo appearances 

to twelve, was named Cowboy of the Year during the Saturday 

afternoon performance of the Finals and then rode the Big Stone 

bull, Pop Evil to 87 points in the fi nal round to overtake season 

leader Ty Pozzobon and win his second Canadian title. 

The thirty-two year old tried to put it all in perspective moments 

after the fi nal performance of the CFR concluded. ”I’m the luckiest 

guy in the rodeo world. Everything I have in life, I owe to rodeo; 

this sport has given me opportunities I never would have imagined.” 

Another champion who won his crown with authority was 

Cochrane steer wrestler Tanner Milan who blazed a 3.5 second run 

to win the fi nal round, and clinch the aggregate title en route to his 

fi rst Canadian championship. 

“I had a steer that ran really hard but Jesse (Lee Graves’ dogging 

horse) just ate him up and I thought I made a pretty good run.” 

That ‘pretty good’ run and the $11,400 payday took Milan’s 

season earnings total to $67,565 and a $24,000 cushion over second 

place fi nisher, Canadian Rookie of the Year, Chason Floyd. 

In the Bareback Riding, Cowley, Wyoming cowboy, J. R. Vezain 

parlayed a fast start into a championship. The twenty year-old won 

the fi rst three go rounds and the aggregate and held off four time 

champion Dusty LaValley for the title. 

Vezain heads off to the Wrangler NFR in fourth place overall. “I 

hope I can keep the momentum going down there.” 

Team ropers Paul Eaves (Millsap, Texas) and Dustin Bird (Cutbank, 

Montana) put together a week that included two fi rst place 

fi nishes, a 1/2 split (that equaled the arena record—3.7 seconds), 

a fourth and a fi fth and an aggregate win to give the duo season 

winnings in excess of $36,000 and their fi rst title north of the 49th 

parallel. 

Despite a disappointing end to his week that saw him buck off 

his last two horses, Ponoka bronc rider Luke Butterfi eld hung on 

to win his fi rst Canadian title. The win was Butterfi eld’s fi rst and 

capped off a year that saw him emerge as season leader in Canada 

and narrowly miss a trip to the Wrangler NFR as the third generation 

Ponoka talent missed the fi fteen man cut by one spot. 

In the Tie Down Roping, Louisiana roper Shane Hanchey missed 

his calf in the fi nal round but was able to hang on to the commanding 

lead he had coming in to the last day to win his fi rst championship. 

Hanchey who heads off to the Wrangler NFR next month 

fi nished the season with $58, 000 and a comfortable $17.000 margin 

over runner-up, Logan Hofer of Magrath, Alberta.

Foutch, Orville Win it all at Great Lakes Circuit Finals

It’s been a long, hard road and the payoff this weekend was huge 

for Natalie Foutch of Eldora, Iowa. 

The day she bought a half-Thoroughbred grandson of Firewater 

Flit as a 3-year-old from Sandi Brandley, it seemed like a good 

match. But for fi ve long years, she won nothing on the 16-hand 

palomino. 

“He was challenging, because he’s so sensitive and particular,” she 

said. “At fi rst, my saddle didn’t fi t, which I didn’t realize. Then he 

used to run off at the right-hand barrel, no matter whether it was 

fi rst or second. I fi nally discovered he was a bleeder. And then he 

demanded I stay off his head, which meant I had to really change 

my style of riding.” 

Foutch can pinpoint the exact moment everything came together 

– it was April 2011 when his back was right, his lungs were good 

and she put him in a light hackamore that amounts to virtually 

nothing on his head. 

“He’s actually taught me a lot,” said Foutch, who last made the 

Circuit Finals in 1999 on a gray mare she trained named That’s Ster-

ling. “I just hadn’t been listening to my horse, but I fi nally understood 

what he was talking about. When he was 3 and 4 and 5 I cried 

a lot of tears. I just couldn’t fi gure it out. I’m glad I was patient.” 

Since the light came on, Foutch and “Orville” have been impossible 

to beat. They roared into the Great Lakes Circuit Finals in 

Louisville, Ken., last weekend with the lead in the standings and, after 

placing second in all three rounds in Louisville, won the average, 

too, to bank $5,046. The icing on the cake was Orville’s selection as 

Great Lakes Circuit Horse of the Year. 

“I had a fabulous fi nals; it was the most money I’ve ever won in 

a weekend,” Foutch said. “It was so rewarding; there are a lot of 

tough girls in this circuit and I was tickled to death to get Horse 

of the Year. I probably went to just 18 rodeos, picking the places 

where I knew Orville would do well.” 

Now 9 years old and a left-handed horse, Orville seems relieved 

that his owner fi nally fi gured out all his quirks. 

“He’s a freak of a horse; just very unique,” she said. “He’s very 

deceiving because he’s so long-strided and smooth. I have to really 

stay off his head and let him work, but he knows his job and loves 

it, so I can sit back and enjoy the ride.” 

Registered as Maggie’s Moon Fire, Orville got his yellow color 

from his sire, the Firewater Flit son VF Moon Fire, who is out of 

a granddaughter of Top Moon. On the bottom, Orville is out of a 

Thoroughbred mare named Maggie’s Bay. She goes back to Raise A 

Native and Tom Fool on the top side and to Northern Dancer and 

Bold Ruler maternally. 

Foutch, who is the wife of tie-down roper P.J. Foutch and mother 

of their 9-year-old son, Drake, said she takes her time training a 

horse. Orville should be easy – just pick your points and push him 

past them – but sometimes it’s hard to do nothing more. 

Happily, she has a 4-year-old fi lly out of That’s Sterling, who was 

bred Three Bars and Go Man Go on her top side and Jet Deck via 

her dam. And in the spring, Foutch and reserve champion Robin 

Beck will represent the Great Lakes in Oklahoma City. 

For now, Foutch has NFR dreams and will try her luck at the big 

building rodeos this winter, with her family behind her 100 percent. 

“If not for my husband, I wouldn’t be going,” she said. “He makes 

it happen. It’s been a lot of fun.”

Intense Competition at the JB Quarter Horses Futurity 

In a year of extremely tough futurity colts, one of the toughest 

and most consistent futurity colts captured the $25,000-added JB 

Quarter Horses Futurity Championship. 

RLJ High Intedsity, the 4-year old gelding, ridden by Brett Monroe 

for Homer and Ada Nell Beasley, turned in the fastest time of 

the futurity and the weekend of over 2000 runs with a 15.051, to 

win Saturday night’s Championship Round and $6,029. 

The JBQH Futurity Finals was one of the fi nest rounds of barrel 

racing a person is likely to see; one after another of the top colts 

notched fast time after fast time. For most of the Finals Latricia 

Duke and the Bar Nothin Barrel Bash Futurity Champion, LK 

Watch Me Rock (owned by LeAnn Kay), led with a blazing 15.201. 

Many horses came close but none quite broke the .2 barrier until 

Monroe and Rlj High Intedsity blew that out of the water and put 

Duke and LK Watch Me Rock into second place for a $5,124 paycheck. 

The fastest runner from the Qualifying Round with a 15.194 was 

Shes Free To Flame ridden by Brittany Pozzi for owners Jan Boultinghouse 

and Savanah Reeves. In the Finals, they came up a little 

short with 15.325 which netted her connections with 3rd place and 

a $4,521. Shes Free To Flame is a full sister to Flaming Pastem, who 

Savanah Reeves has ridden to many rodeo wins over the last couple 

years. 

In 4th place was Latricia Duke again, this time riding Schiller 

Ranch owned gelding, Bobbie Gene, to a 15.368 and a $3,618 

paycheck. Rounding out the top 5 in this futurity slugfest was I 

Know I Can 2 with PJ Burger for owner Veale Ranches who ran a 

sharp 15.380 for a $2,713 paycheck. I Know I Can 2 is out of the 

same dam as former futurity standout Mulberry Canyon Moon, De 

Streaker. 

Thanks to their qualifying run of 15.370, Monroe and RLJ High 

Intedsity also won the Triple Crown 100 Slot Race and Future Fortunes 

Bonus. Monroe only made the long trek to the Waco, Texas, 

event because Talmadge Green had named RLJ High Intedsity to

Friday night’s Consolation Round in 15.425, worth $4,019. 

This win was just an extension of a hot fall run for the team 

where they have won the Fizz Bomb Futurity and WPRA Futurity 

among others while piling up more than $50k in earnings for the 

year. Just a little over a tenth of a second behind was Molli Montgomery 

on her catty, quick mare, Kudo Galore, who ran a 15.527 to 

earn a nice $3,416. 

Louis Paradis of Thetford Mines, Quebec, won the Copper 

Spring Ranch Amateur with a two-run average of 31.747. Paradis 

and Perfect Choice, a 4-year-old gelding by A Regal Choice out of 

BCR Pass The Purse, by Pass Em Up (TB), earned $2,064.

Briggs & A Special Colour, Schultz & KS Dox Cajun Bug Set Elite Pace

Multiple aged event champion and former Wrangler National 

Finals Rodeo qualifi er Jordon Briggs set the pace in Main Race 1 

at the Elite Extravaganza, held Nov. 6-11 in the Extraco Events 

Center in Waco, Texas. 

She and her talented derby horse A Special Colour (“Patrón”) 

kicked things off with a 15.310, running late on Friday night in 

draw position 301. 

Each Main Race was split into two sections of 400 for 800 entries 

total per race. Main Race 1 ran Friday night and Saturday morning 

and Main Race 2 ran Saturday night and Sunday morning. 

Living in nearby Lott, Texas, Briggs didn’t have much of drive 

after her late night run. 

“It was a really good smooth run,” said Briggs, who is sponsored 

by Shiloh Saddlery, Classic Equine, Med-Vet Pharmaceuticals 

(MVP), Rock N Roll Cowgirl, Myers Training Stables, home of 

Frenchmans Guy and RodeoRigs.com. “There wasn’t anything that 

I could really pick a part about it. He had his head down and was 

running. He worked like an old fi nished horse.” 

She and Patrón picked up $2,184 for winning the 1D in the guaranteed 

payout race. They also placed ninth in Main Race 2 for total 

earnings of $2,548. Their time on two runs put them third in the 

two-run average, which was won by Emily Efurd and Guys French 

Jet. 

Patrón, a 5-year-old gelding by Hot Colours out of French Wild 

Heart, by Frenchmans Guy, won about $65,000 during his futurity 

year, Briggs said. She’s entered him in four derbies this year and 

won three—the Cornhusker, Dash & Dance and 5-States. She 

hopes the gelding can go four for fi ve with a win in the BFA Derby 

next month in Oklahoma City. 

Briggs also plans to continue the gelding’s rodeo seasoning next 

year.

“I might rodeo a little on him this winter,” she said. She hasn’t decided 

if she will rodeo open or pro. “I haven’t bought my (WPRA) 

card yet, but there are a lot of good pro rodeos to go to around 

here.” 

Kay Lynn Schulz, the winner of Main Race 2, also plans on rodeoing 

a little next year. Her goal is to make her second Texas Circuit 

Finals and qualify for the All American Finals, both of which are 

held in Waco.

“I want to go to the bigger rodeos,” said the mother of two. “I 

had enough won to qualify for the All American Finals my rookie 

year, but I didn’t go to enough rodeos. It was a rookie mistake.” 

Schulz, a dental hygienist from San Antonio, Texas, has ridden 

her homebred gelding KS Dox Cajun Bug (“Cajun”) to several Elite 

victories since the production company’s inception. However, she 

got a little off her game plan this time around. 

Usually she enters the warm-up race, where things typically go 

wrong in some form or fashion, and then Cajun, a 2003 gelding by 

PC Dox Cajun out of Lady Bug Bug, by Bed Bugs, leaves everyone 

in the dust for the remaining two races. She didn’t enter the warmup 

race this year because she didn’t want to put three runs on her 

horse, and she ended up making her ‘uh-oh’ run in Main Race 1. 

“I thought I had it fi gured out by now,” laughed Schulz, who said 

she spent most of the fi rst run just trying to stay with Cajun. “I was 

hanging on like a monkey. I spent most of the run trying to decide 

if I should try to still hustle him or just hang on. He’s got it fi gured 

out, alright.” 

She was a bit more prepared for her second run, and she and 

Cajun turned in the 2nd fastest time of the event, a 15.093 on Sunday 

morning. The Main Race 2 win and a win in the adult incentive 

awarded her $2,395. She and Cajun were also second in the twoaverage. 

Other average winners include 2D Robin Montague and Bye 

Bye Jody Boy; 3D Janice Stephens and FG Double Dat Cash; 4D 

Amber Clay and Gidget; 5D Paige Curran and San Rose Marie and 

6D Paige Ortegon and Special Shecky.

Headin’ For Home 

Caring horse people know when things aren’t right with their 

horses. They can tell if a horse is “off ” his feed, not acting 

right and displaying abnormal behavior. They know something 

is wrong and they fi nd out the cause so they can correct it. 

Sometimes it’s that way with people, too. Sometimes people get 

“down” and feel like God is far away. There’s an old saying that 

says, “lf God seems far away, He’s not the one who moved!” 

Maybe you’ve been too tired or discouraged to read your Bible or 

even pray. Maybe you’ve been too caught up with business or family 

to get to church or even take time to talk to God. If you want 

things to change, you have to turn your life over to God and spend 

some time talking to Him and listening to what He says to you. 

Oh, yes, God will talk to your spirit inside you! But, you have to get 

quiet to hear Him. Turn off the TV and just sit quietly. Read some 

comforting Scriptures unless you’re too exhausted and, in that case, 

just talk to God because He is your best friend and the only one 

who can really work things out in your life. 

God is good all the time and He loves you unconditionally. He
