Happy New Year One & All
On behalf of everyone at the magazine, may I be one of the first to welcome
you to 2013, and I hope it will be an excellent year for us all. 2012 was a great
year with plenty to enjoy both locally and further afield. The London Olympic
and Jubilee celebrations were most definitely two incredible highlights for me,
and you all I'm sure. Christmas too is lovely but after three weeks of binge
eating and sampling a little too much festive port, enough is enough and it's
always nice to blow off the old cobwebs and start again.
I think 2013 is going to be another great year for the area, especially with all
the many events planned throughout the year in and around this beautiful part
of the country. Don't forget you can read all about them here with us!
This has been another great twelve months for the magazine and we hope to
kick on in the New Year as we continue to grow from strength to strength. Our
aim however remains the same as it has always been....To make your magazine
the best it possibly can be. As always, we have plenty of local stories and
features inside for you to read and enjoy...including a number of FREE to enter
competitions with some excellent prizes up for grabs. So get involved as you
have to be in it to win it this New Year!
We would like to welcome all our new advertisers to the magazine, and we
hope that by working with us you will see the benefits of featuring in the areas
premier glossy publication, and of course all our existing advertisers for their
valued custom! Finally we would like to thank all the people who make this
magazine what it is today - YOU! Without your stories and input over the past
21 years we just simply wouldn't be able to put the magazine together.
Please remember, if you belong to charity or are involved in any kind of fund
raising activity, then please do give us a call or send us an email. We will be
only too happy to help if we can.
Well there's no time to waste. Have a great start to the New Year and i'll see
you all in the Spring!
Zing and Zest
Relish the Experience of Indian Cuisine!
Tarik Syed and Habib Rahman, are the proud owners of Ashton-Under-Lyne’s newest Indian Restaurant, which is situated on Oldham Road, beside IKEA.
Both gentlemen have had a successful career in the restaurant industry. Tarik comes from a curry dynasty, which has had restaurants since the 1960’s, and were the
owners of the Lancashire Tandoori which was a very popular Indian restaurant, in Ashton during the 1980s.
Habib, also managed other successful Indian restaurants in Tameside. Now the duo has combined their skills in the Indian Restaurant Industry to create Zing and Zest
Indian food bar, a modern and contemporary restaurant.
Local Comedy Club Up For Top Awards
Saddleworth's Off The Rails Comedy Club has been nominated as 'Best promoter And Comedy
Club' in Dave TV and Absolute Radio's One Night Stand Award. Promoter Rob Riley said;
"It's been a fantastic year for us here at Off The Rails. We're up against some serious
competition so I'm not holding out too much hope but you never
know and winning would be a great way to celebrate the end of our
tenth year of bringing great acts to packed houses."
Voters can win one of five iPad's, a 55" 3D telly, DAB radios and free
tickets by voting for their favourite club. Vote either by
texting DAVE56 to 67777 (which costs the princely sum of ten pence)
or the more frugal can register their approval at Dave TV's Facebook
page.
Dave TV's One Night Stand is on every Wednesday 10pm featuring
many of the acts that have, or are due to appear, at Off The Rails.
On the subject of competitions Droylsden's Danny Sutcliffe beat five
other finalists in October to become the Off The Rails Comedian Of
The Year. Runners up were Leeds' Peter Brush and Salford's Kevin
Shevlin. Oldham's Mick Ferry compered. Despite a great showing
Danny Sutcliffe
from all six finalists Danny's natural stage presence coupled with
strong original material won over the judging panel of three comedy industry professionals. You can hear
Danny every Wednesday on his late night radio show on Tameside FM
Danny received £500, a website from sponsors www.urbanhaze.com and a paid spot at the Highlights chain of
comedy clubs. Sponsors were Off The Rails Comedy Club, Urban Haze and J.W. Lees brewery.
Off The Rails Comedy Club takes place at the Royal George, Greenfield on the last Sunday of every month with
additional fundraising and touring shows throughout the year . The last show of 2012 was on Sunday 30th
December with Christian Reilly, Tom Wrigglesworth and MC Dan Nightingale. For details on future nights please
go www.saddleworthcomedy.co.uk or ring Tel: 07874 152338
The restaurant, which stands out with its lime green exterior, on Oldham Road, serves a range of Traditional
Indian dishes. Alongside, British favourites; Zing and Zests own signature dishes and their Chef’s specials.
The Zing and Zest menu is not only full of a tantalising choice of flavours and new, interesting recipes, but the
menu also gives a very clear ‘strength guide’ which will steer you to your favourite dish be it a mild one star or
very hot five star!
Unlike many Indian restaurants Zing
and Zest also have a range of
vegetable side dishes which can be
made into a main course for any
vegetarians.
All their menus (including
takeaway) are available online.
Zing and Zest should be a great
addition to the Ashton-Under-Lyne
restaurants and we predict they will
have a very busy 2013.
Left to Right... Mick Ferry, Danny Sutcliffe,
Rob Riley (Off The Rails) and Nick Watts
from Urban Haze).

A fantastic evening was enjoyed by all at the Saddleworth W.I Salsa Night
chosen charities; Oldham Mountain Rescue, Oldham Cancer Care and
Sarnies at heart of British diet
Despite all the negatives of the recession, it seems that
ready-to-eat sandwiches are now such a big part of our lives
that we no longer see them as a luxury.
New figures show that we chomped our way through 126 million more pre-packed
sandwiches last year than in 2008, bringing the total consumed to a whopping three billion
sarnies across the UK.
And although another three billion lunch boxes were
taken to work, more people bought ready-made
sarnies from supermarkets to take home - an
increase of eight per cent - to put into lunch
boxes the next day.
Sandwiches are also highly fashion-led with
constant changes in the 20 most popular fillings,
although chicken salad remains at number one.
In fact, chicken is the most popular filling,
accounting for about 30% of all ready-made
sandwiches, or 68,000 tonnes of the stuff
The statistics from the British Sandwich
Association show that the humble sandwich has
come a long way from its origins as a snack for field
labourers in the middle ages.
However, it did not get its name until 1762 when
the 4th Earl of Sandwich called for some cuts of
beef to be placed between toasted slices of bread so
that he could continue gambling while he ate.
The Earl's request elevated the humble sandwich
from the fields to the tables of the aristocracy
and it seems it hasn't looked back since, becoming
the snack of choice for lunches, parties and picnics in its 250-year history.
In total British consumers managed to munch their way through over 11.5 billion
sandwiches last year - with more than half of them made and eaten at home.
While the average price of a sandwich is almost £1.91, the record for creating the most
expensive sarnie ever is claimed by chef Tom Bridge whose Lancaster Cheese Sandwich
which was sold on ebay in 2006 for £345. The creation included white Umbrian truffles at
£1,700 per kilo - an ingredient unlikely to be found in most kitchens.
The world's largest pre-packed sandwich is believed to be one created by Roberts Bakery
in Norwich that was 2.5 metres long, packed with Marmite, tuna and mayonnaise and
weighing the same as 1,000 loaves.
Britain's biggest sandwich retailer is now the American franchise chain Subway which shot
ahead of Tesco, Greggs and Marks & Spencer to take the lead in 2006. But retailers would
need to take note that many consumers buying sandwiches in busy spots refuse to queue
for more than two minutes for their lunch or afternoon tea.
Despite the huge variety of breads on offer today, nearly 60% of pre-packed sandwiches
are made with traditional square sandwich bread while wraps account for just four per
cent.
Nearly 20% of all sandwiches are purchased in London with the Midlands just behind at
17% followed by Yorkshire on 12% and 11% in Lancashire while people in the North East
and South West buy the fewest.
Jim Winship, Director of the British Sandwich Association, says: “It seems that while
some consumers reacted to all the negative publicity by making more sandwiches at
home, this was short-lived.
“The evidence suggests that people get bored with the limited choice of ingredients
they have in the home for making up lunch boxes - the choice of fillings in sandwich
outlets is generally much greater.
The restaurant now has a contemporary
feel that contrasts perfectly with the
Brasserie which retains its traditional
charm. It can be hired for private
parties, functions and for wedding
breakfasts and evening receptions.
The Old Bell Inn opened the doors of its
new restaurant at the beginning of
December. The grand opening also
celebrated the completion of four new
bedrooms giving a total of 18
bedrooms. The accommodation is
perfect for business clients who want a
home away from home when travelling,
or for couples or families looking for a
weekend away.
The bedrooms are bright and modern
and reflect the quality of the extension
Diggle – below heather-clad slopes
Words by David Needham
There is nothing quite like the feeling I get when waking up to see that it
is a crisp cold frosty morning outside. The pleasure was doubled for me when I
decided to start the day with a visit to the historically rich village of Diggle and to
discover for myself what lay below the heather-clad slopes of its moorland hills. On
my arrival I found the combination of a morning frost and an early rising sun had
painted the heather with an irresistible glistening white, instead of the usual purple
glow associated with its late summer scene.
Some visitors to the village may be attracted by the impressive flight of locks
climbing the Huddersfield Narrow Canal from Ward Lane to the Diggle Portal,
which marks the Saddleworth end of the highest and longest canal tunnel in the
United Kingdom, but how many of them will know that in the mid-nineteenth
century the village also claimed the distinction of having the largest water wheel in
the world.
It was at Diggle New Mill, in 1847, that the mill’s owner William Broadbent installed
what was then the biggest water wheel ever seen. Constructed seven years before
the famous Laxey Wheel, on the Isle of Man, the Diggle Wheel was indeed the
largest in the world. It was 64ft 8ins in diameter, 7ft wide and carried an axle
measuring 9ft 9ins long. Its 192 buckets each held 36 gallons of water and each
revolution took 45 seconds.
In search of this location, I found myself on a lane which runs alongside Diggle
Brook at a point below Ravenstone Brow, some distance away from the appealing
hamlet of Diglea. I had passed through two stone pillars, continued over a stonebuilt
bridge and then stopped to admire the sublimity of the moorland scenery.
Awed by the stillness reigning all around, my solitude was broken by what must be
this area’s equivalent of the early morning Rush Hour, the sound of murmuring
sheep.
Little of interest remains at the Diggle New Mill site, which was originally built in
1843. Although the same can’t be said of the former Dobcross Loom Works, who’s
commanding presence you cannot fail to notice when entering the village via
Huddersfield Road from the direction of Saddleworth’s magnificent railway viaduct
across the A670. Previously used by W. H. Shaw & Son Ltd for pallet making, the
loom works was built alongside the canal by James Hollingworth and John
Hutchinson around 1861. The Saddleworth Historical Society tells us in one of its
many fine Local Interest Trail publications that Hollingworth, a carpenter by trade,
had patented an improvement to loom technology in 1859 and then set up in
business with his architect partner because he couldn’t get the looms made to his
own satisfaction. By 1890 the factory was producing 1700 looms and employing
around 500 men.
Outside the Hanging Gate public house (which has been recently taken over) I was
reminded, by the sight of three horse riders, that the Huddersfield road was
originally part of the Mumps-to-Standedge Turnpike Road, which was completed in
1794. The pub was purpose built as the turnpike’s toll house and was initially
known as ‘The Gate’. The earliest reference to its present name was in March 1864,

The New Hanging Gate
After hearing a local pub, which had been one of my favourites a few years ago,
had been taken over by new owners and were serving delicious home cooked food
I decided to check it out for myself!
Following a brisk walk along the lovely canal in Diggle we popped into The
Hanging Gate for some much needed food. We were greeted by the new owners,
Farah and Carl Benton, Farah and Carl are very friendly, and we chatted for a while
about how excited they were about running The Hanging Gate, which reopened in
early December. Both, Farah and Carl have experience in the pub, restaurant and
catering industry, as they both ran the Roaches Lock in Mossley, successfully for
two years. Farah and Carl are each bringing something new to the table – Farah as
the new landlady and Carl, from Deerhill Catering, over-seeing the kitchen and
ensuring fresh home cooked food at the pub cooked by their talented chef Danny
Wilson.
Once being presented with a glass of white wine, we were shown to our table by a
friendly member of staff, and given a menu along with a list of specials. We were
spoilt for choice. After much deliberation I decided to opt for the chef’s pate,
chicken livers served with freshly baked bread and red onion sweet chutney. The
pate was smooth and so well presented. My partner had the garlic mushrooms,
served with garlic ciabatta bread, which was equally as delicious as my starter!
We were so excited about choosing all our dishes as they sounded so yummy, so
when it came to our main course I left the calorie counting for another day and
went for the much talked about ‘Gate Burger’, homemade chilli burger with bacon,
cheese and onion rings served with homemade chips and relish, this tasted
exceptional and I was not at all disappointed. My partner had a T-bone steak, The
Hanging Gate served with homemade chips, onion rings, tomato and mushrooms
again this was presented so well and the steak melted in your mouth.
Whilst being left to peruse the glorious dessert menu we were offered another
glass of wine. Although we thought we could not eat another morsel we could not
resist the trio of profiteroles, with Chantilly cream and a dark rich chocolate sauce
along with a well stocked cheese board consisting of brie, English stilton, cheddar,
double Gloucester, biscuits and grapes.
atmosphere; the Gate also has a range of entertainment coming up in 2013 (ring
Diggle
when the local newspaper reported that John Buckley of
the Hanging Gate had taken one of his customers to court
for breaking his mahogany table.
Horses, of course, could carry only limited weights and
the Pennine weather is notoriously bad; so the
transportation of goods became laborious and expensive.
By the end of the eighteenth century turnpike routes
across the hills had become congested and as a
consequence, in 1794, a narrow-gauge canal linking
Ashton-under-Lyne to Huddersfield, via Saddleworth, was
sanctioned by an Act of Parliament.
At canal side the motionless water gave a picturesque
reflection of the immediate landscape and long ranging
views of the rolling heather on the nearby hills. A passing
train captured my attention, jogging my memory that
Diggle is the guardian to the entrances of the famous
Standedge railway and canal tunnels. The Standedge
Canal Tunnel was completed in 1811 and officially opened
when managers went through the tunnel on the barge
‘Lively’, the first boat to make the whole journey. The
length of the tunnel from Diggle to Marsden is 3 miles 171
yards and it is said that 10,000 people attended the
opening ceremony. Its construction had taken seventeen
years to complete by men working by candlelight.
Canal boats were drawn by horses, which walked along
the towpath to the entrance of the tunnel. There they were
unharnessed and taken, via Boat Lane, over the top of
Standedge to the barges at the tunnel end. The canal boats were ‘legged’ through
the tunnel by men pushing against the walls and roof with their feet. Sometimes
men needing the work would wait at each tunnel end to offer their services as
‘leggers’. By 1921 canal traffic had diminished and the canal was formerly closed to
navigation in 1944.
In 1974 the Huddersfield Canal Society was formed with the aim of restoring the
canal as a navigable waterway and, in 1997, the Huddersfield Canal Company was
created to co-ordinate the final phase of the canal’s restoration. The Company
comprised of representatives from the Huddersfield Canal Society; Oldham,
Kirklees and Tameside Councils and British Waterways. Restoration was finally
completed in April 2001 and the Standedge Visitors Centre, at the Marsden end of
the tunnel, was officially opened in May of that year, by Lily Turner the daughter of
David Whitehead, who was said to have been the fastest ‘legger’ through the tunnel
in 1914.
At the Diggle Hotel end of Boat Lane, I found the entrances to the three railway
tunnels, which run through the hillside parallel to the canal tunnel. Work
commenced on the first of these, a single line tunnel, for London and North
Western Railway in 1846, and was completed two years later at a cost of £201,608
(including approaches). The full length of the first railway tunnel is 3 miles 60 yards
and construction was again carried out by candlelight, with over 150,000 lbs of
candles being used at a cost of £3,618. The L & N.W. Railway issued its first
timetable for Saddleworth on 1 August 1849. A second single line tunnel was
finished in 1870 and a third tunnel, the currently used double line, was constructed
by 1894.
The Beerhouse Act of 1830 enabled shopkeepers to sell beer on and off the
premises and James Broadbent, a Diglee (Diglea) grocer since at least 1824, was
first listed as a beer retailer in 1833. The hamlet’s importance grew with the coming
of the railway and by 1851 Hannah Bradley and her daughter Elizabeth Radcliffe
were running the beerhouse, one of at least three in the village competing for the
navvies’ hard-earned cash. By 1857, Elizabeth’s son Frederick was in charge and
shortly afterwards he moved to a newly built house near Diggle Station.
Subsequently, in 1859, Frederick Radcliffe obtained the first public house license
for the Diggle Hotel.
My cool, refreshing, and early morning journey of discovery ended at the hamlet of
Diglea; which is a fine example of a pre-Industrial Revolution weaving settlement
with its houses made of stone, possibly quarried from the local hillside. The
handloom cottages, with the top storey used for weaving, and nearby clothiers’
cottages are typical of those found in scores of villages throughout West Yorkshire.

NEW FOR 2013...
Diggle House Farm
Stunning Self Catering Accommodation Nestled in the Heart of
Saddleworth
Anybody who has had the pleasure of venturing up the far reaches of Diggle (on the road past the Diggle Hotel) will appreciate
the panoramic beauty of this stunning part of Saddleworth.
Nestled within this breathtaking landscape lies Diggle House Farm and Barns, which has been in the Shaw family since before
the Second World War. Now home to Saddleworth Stables, the farm has also been a pig and poultry farm, dairy farm and beef
farm over the years. The family have now decided to diversify in order to keep the farm running effectively and by working
with DEFRA have created idyllic self-catering accommodation.
The barns which date back to the late 1700's have been underused, as they were not deemed suitable for modern farming
methods. Therefore, owners Nigel and Abigail Shaw have put a lot of hard work into totally transforming them into two
separate cottages named after Nigel's much loved grandparents. Jenny's Cottage is a beautiful one bedroom dwelling with
large king size bedroom (with traditional iron bed), kitchen (complete with fridge, cooker with separate hob and microwave)
with an adjoining lounge and dining area complete with wood burning stove (with complimentary logs) and luxury bathroom.
Jim's Barn next door is completed to the same very high specification and quality finish and includes two beautiful bedrooms
(one double and one twin), family bathroom with shower and vanity unit, and kitchen and dining area as Jenny's Cottage but
with a dishwasher. Both cottages can be linked - ideal for grandparents!
Both cottages exceed building regulations for insulation levels and offer the perfect retreat against the sometimes unfavourable
Saddleworth weather. They also include individually designed and custom made oak staircases, have wall mounted flat screen
TV's (with DVD player) and enjoy privileged views of either side of the valley. Arguable one of the most impressive aspects of
these conversions is the modern technology which they have used including a Ground Source Heat Pump (so all the heating
and hot water is produced from pipes under the fields), Rainwater Harvesting (for washing machine, toilet & outside tap use),
Underfloor Heating (to reduce energy consumption and making a cleaner environment for asthmatics), LED Lighting
throughout and the use of Solar PV, again aimed at reducing the farm's carbon footprint.
Both cottages are on target to gain a 4+ rating and include quality crockery and linen, as well as Welcome Packs complete with
fresh farm eggs! The barns can also be rented as one larger unit to make it a three bedroomed cottage. Saddleworth Stables is
literally on the doorstep and offers riding lessons and hacks. Stabling can also be provided if you want to bring your own
horse. The cottages are also perfect for families, walkers, romantic breaks or business visits. For more information or to
make a reservation, please contact the Shaw Family. Please see advert below.
From the days
Having only just moved into the premises last April, The Diggle Car Centre
specialise in the Importation of Japanese MPV's and retro cars, along with 4X4's
and other Japanese models. These models are normally made to a higher
Specification than the UK equivalent, and include air conditioning as standard along
with many other features. The weather conditions in Japan are also better than the
UK, meaning many cities do not suffer from snow and therefore do not use grit on
the roads which can damage cars over a period of time. In Japan there is also a
tighter control of their equivalent to the MOT system in place here in the UK. "When
we choose the cars from our network of suppliers in Japan we ensure that we
select the best models available to be sold at a competitive price." Says Owner
Chris. "All our Freshly Imported cars are inclusive of a Two Years parts and Labour
Warranty (Included in the purchase Price), as well as a 12 Months MOT, 6 Month
Road Tax, and full valeting which is also included in the sale price." So why not go
and visit them at their new Unit at the Mill and have a look around. They are also
able to do personal Imports, so why not give them a call and let them give you a
quote for your next car. They have many models on display, which you may not
have seen previously in the UK!
Close by Saddleworth Tile Centre Ltd have enjoyed four successful years, having
knitting yarns, etc. The yarns are supported by their own range of patterns with a
unique style with wide appeal to both young and old. An important part of the
Woolyknit philosophy is a hands on approach to crafts. They run varied workshops
and their intention is to make a visit to the shop an enjoyable experience, with a
comfortable 'Knit & Natter' area as well as library of vintage patterns and books
available to browse. Exciting times lie ahead for the Woolyknit team as a new Cafe
Menopause…
need it be hell?
HThe answer is no,
definitely not, according
to Mr Luciano Nardo,
Consultant
Gynaecologist and
Director of GyneHealth.
In the UK the average
age women experience
the menopause is 51,
but it can occur any
time between the ages
of 48 and 53, though
some women
experience spontaneous
early onset menopause
before the age of 40
and some reach it early
due to surgery for the
removal of ovaries
because of cysts or
cancer treatment.
Whatever brings you
there, Mr Nardo insists that no woman should experience the one size fits
all treatment we’re most likely to receive when referred to non-specialist
services.
“The onset of menopause is of course a natural event for most women”
says Mr Nardo. “But for many it can bring with it a series of side effects
that can seriously affect the quality of life and daily activities”.
“Women can suffer from any or all of a range of symptoms, including hot
flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, exhaustion and mood swings.
When a new patient comes in we discuss how each affects her life and
then decide how to address it. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is
by no means always the answer. I take a holistic approach, as well as
prescribing evidence based medications I will discuss everything from
nutrition to acupuncture and reflexology. For me, it’s all about quality of
life – and this we can give”.
It is important that any woman entering the menopause sees her doctor
or a specialist, like Mr Nardo. The loss of hormones has effects beyond
those symptoms described above. Menopause leads to an increased
likelihood of osteoporosis (bone weakness) and of heart disease,” says
Mr Nardo. “The oestrogen women produce before menopause by and
large protects women from these, but when it disappears, you need to be
aware of what lifestyle changes are necessary to address that”. Nowadays
some GPs with a special interest in women’s health provide a very good
menopause service, so women should check with their GP to see if they
can help.
You can meet Mr Nardo for consultation at his rooms in central
Manchester, Cheadle or London. Please call 0845 600 9997 to make
an appointment or enquiry, or visit www.gyne-health.co.uk

LOOKING AT LANDSCAPE: PASTORAL TO PRESENT
Olsson Rum from Eigg
around SADDLEWORTH 26 www.aroundsaddleworth.co.uk
Gallery Oldham’s latest exhibition presents a selection of landscapes from
its extensive permanent collection.
‘Looking at Landscape: Pastoral to Present’ explores the development of
the painting style from the late 1700s to the present and includes some of
the greatest artists in Gallery Oldham’s collection, from JMW Turner to
Terry Frost and Andy Goldsworthy.
As well as paintings the exhibition, which runs from January 12 to April,
includes drawing, sculpture and photography.
Visitors will be able to view old favourites and more recent additions, plus
works that have rarely been on display in recent years.
Some of the best artists to emerge from the Oldham area have painted
landscapes and the show includes works by James Purdy and well-known
local artist John McCombs who is based in Saddleworth.
A highlight is a new acquisition from painter Helen Bradley. This is one of
five works given to the Gallery just before Christmas through The Art
Fund.
The newest piece in the collection is a major ceramic work by Ewen
Henderson which has just been purchased with a grant from the Heritage
Lottery Fund.
Also featured are Oldham’s famous Lees Collection of watercolours, given by the industrialist Charles Edward Lees. These include important paintings by John Robert
Cozens and John Constable.
The Borough’s most famous artist, William Stott of Oldham, explored
landscape all his life and one of his paintings is included for people to
enjoy.
The exhibition traces the development of landscape painting in the 20th
century with artists from the Newlyn School in Cornwall, such as Julius
Olsson and Henry Herbert La Thangue.
The abstract artists of the mid 20th Century transformed approaches to
landscape painting and Oldham has a fine collection of paintings from the
1960s by artists working in Cornwall, including Terry Frost, Alexander
Mackenzie, Sandra Blow and Harry Ousey.
More recent works, including a sculpture by land artist Andy Goldsworthy,
a monumental abstract pastel drawing by David Blackburn and paintings
by Oldham-born painter Alan Rankle which reference the historic pastoral
tradition with a contemporary twist, are also on show.
The exhibition also includes photography including an unusual panoramic
photographic landscape by Gayle Kwong Chang.
Councillor Barbara Brownridge, Cabinet Member for Co-operatives and
Community Development, said: “Looking at Landscape really demonstrates
the quality of Gallery Oldham's collection.
By the River - Paul Sandby
“With such a range of work by major artists across three centuries there
really is something for everyone. It’s also a great pleasure that Gallery
Oldham can bring out works that haven't been seen for many years, and to
show off some wonderful new acquisitions.”
Gallery Oldham is open six days a week:
Work could be bad for
your health
The holidays are officially over and the nation is
knuckling down to work. But getting back behind
our desks could actually be bad for our health as a
national charity estimates nearly six million
people may be allergic to their office.
From nasal problems, eye conditions, dry throats, breathing difficulties, lethargy,
and headaches to skin irritations, 95 per cent of people quizzed in a poll for Allergy
UK have experienced one or more symptoms in the workplace.
But over a quarter say their symptoms worsened in their office environment, 62 per
cent have experienced itchy or watery eyes and 27 per cent suffered breathing
difficulties over the last year. Maureen Jenkins, of Allergy UK, says: “The results
are of concern for Allergy UK because it is difficult for individuals to exercise the
same control over their workplace as they would do at home. Management of
allergies becomes increasingly difficult when in communal spaces so it’s not
surprising that a great deal of allergy sufferers have experienced a reaction at
work.â€
The survey also reveals that office cleaning is infrequent at best and doesn’t appear
sufficient to prevent the build up of house dust mites and allergens. Nearly 40 per
cent of those polled say their office is cleaned once a week or less, while nearly one
in five have to survive with less.
When you combine dusty, cluttered desks, soft furnishings, poorly vacuumed
carpets and lack of ventilation with the fact that 20 per cent of us spend eight hours
or more at work it’s hardly surprising that it doesn’t add up to a healthy working
environment.
But, the charity points out, allergies don’t just impact on workers as, according to
the research, they are also having a significant effect on productivity.
While nearly three quarters of those questioned took time off sick in the last year, the
real area of concern is that 42 per cent of allergy sufferers took time off work because of the impact on their condition. Nearly 15 per cent of sufferers were off work for
between four and 10 days off due to their allergy, figures that could be addressed by actively minimising allergens in the workplace.
In a bid to address the problem, the national charity has highlighted a number of office hotspots that can have huge implications for allergy sufferers -
• Lack of ventilation - most sufferers don’t consider their office to be well ventilated with only 15 per cent of people polled saying their office is well ventilated
• Carpets - 90 per cent of workers say their workplace has carpeted floors which can harbour house dust mite allergen • Bookcases - 54 per cent have open
bookshelves which can release allergen into the atmosphere
• Plants - 38 per cent have plants which can harbour moulds which release spores which can cause allergic reactions Allergy UK believes there are steps that both
employees and employers can take to reduce the likelihood of an allergic reaction at work -
• Ensure you have clean air in and around you
• If you have a heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit installed, make sure it is serviced regularly
• If ventilation is limited, use an effective air purifier to help remove and reduce allergens such as pollen, house dust mite debris and mould spores
• Review flooring and furnishings. Carpets on concrete floors can trap moisture allowing dust mites and mould spores to thrive
• Ensure cleaners have effective methods and equipment to get rid of pollens and allergens
• Keep your desk clear, uncluttered and damp dust twice a week
• Hang coats away from desks and traffic areas to prevent dust and allergens being disturbed and released into the air
In the heart of Uppermill,
on the High Street next to
the village square lies a
village flower shop which
has been at the centre of
local community life for
many years.
Aptly named The Flower
Shop, this quaint and
much loved business has
recently been taken over
by Safora Warrington,
whose knowledge and
obvious passion for her
profession is clear to see.
Since taking over towards
the end of 2012 the shop
has had a complete
transformation, making
the interior a light, bright
and welcoming space.
"I'm really excited to be
part of the Uppermill
community, " says
Safora. "Everyone who
has come into the shop
has been very kind and supportive and I'm really looking forward to what should be
an exciting time ahead."
Originally from South America, Safora hopes her global knowledge and
understanding of floristry will help her business be a thriving success, and provide
a service which will prove popular with her customers.
"I consider myself to be very lucky as I believe you never need to work a day in
your life, when you're doing something you love, which for me is this, "explains
Safora. "I have a very supportive family behind me and with their help the future
should be a bright one."
The Flower Shop specialises in flowers for all occasions, including weddings,
birthdays, funerals, Easter, Mothers Day, corporate events and dinner parties to
name but a few. Whatever your requirements, Safora and her talented team will
endeavour to create you an arrangement which will exceed your expectations, no
matter how big or small.
Lees Christmas Market
FIRST LEES VILLAGE
CHRISTMAS MARKET....
IS A HUGE SUCCESS!
Sunday 16th December saw a Christmas themed market take over a Lees
establishment much to the delight of both the organisers and the many
people who came along to enjoy it.
The free to enter event was held at Milan Bar on Elliot Street, and it really got
everyone in the festive spirit. Due to it's huge popularity, there is certainly no
reason why this won't be an annual date for your diaries every year. It was
organised by number of local business people, including Natalie Davies from
The Choc Box, Craig Kerr from Milan and Paula Revill from Elite Wedding
Design, who all got together and decided that there needed to be more in Lees
for the community. And so the idea for a well organised fun-packed Christmas
market was born.
"The day was an amazing success with the people of Lees really supporting it
and coming together for the event. In total there must have been close to
1,000 people who came throughout the day, which is fantastic for everyone
concerned." A happy Natalie told us.
There were stalls both inside and outside Milan ranging from clothing to crafts
to confectionery, each selling their unique range of quality products and
festive gift ideas, including The Choc Box, Curious Alice ladies clothing,
Florries kids clothing, Bloom'in Lovely Florist, Bradley's Bakery, The Queen
Brie (with her delicious range of artisan cheeses), K9 Dog Groomers, Craft
Cottage, Casting Memories, Vintage 55 Clothing, Grandpa Greene's ice creams
and much much more besides!
Musical entertainment came in the form of Lees Brass Band, as well as choirs
from two local schools - St Thomas' Leesfield and St. Agnes who all did a
fantastic job. There was also a Santa's Grotto and face painting for the kids.
Refreshments were available from Milan and with many other festive goodies
and treats on offer to tempt your palate from other stalls, it really was the
place to get you in the Christmas mood!
The event also raised £170.00 for both The Lees Community Association and
The Make A Wish Foundation charity thanks to a raffle.
Due to the success of this event, the organisers are hoping to do more in
the future, with the next one being planned as a Spring Fair, hopefully to be
held in March. A date for this event has yet to be confirmed, so please
look out for further details or go to The Choc Box
facebook page for all the latest news on
forthcoming events.
The Indian Ocean Wins Top Award
Curry guru Pat Chapman has named them one of the best 17 restaurants in the UK in The Cobra Good Curry Guide.
care of it was down to the serious business of lunch.
around SADDLEWORTH 32 www.aroundsaddleworth.co.uk
Well the Indian Ocean of Ashton have done it again and won yet another award.
To mark the accolade, Pat Chapman came to visit them for a celebration lunch on
Monday 3rd December.
During his speech they were named the Best in the North, Pat spoke very highly of
the restaurant and of their commitment to serving the best Indian food and giving
diners an experience,
not just a meal.
Tasty canapes were
doing the rounds
during the
presentation which
included the popular
Lahori fish balls and
firey Kashmiri chicken
tikka pieces (thank
goodness for the
cooling mint yogurt
dip!). After the
formalities were taken
Amongst an array of chicken, meat and vegetable dishes, guests were treated to take on the traditional
Pakistani dish Nihari. Made using shredded meat (they used chicken), the result is a fairly thick consistency
best eaten with a kulcha bread. These were served along with a selection of other naan breads and rice.
Pat took the time to speak to the other diners after the food and posed for pictures with customers and
members of the Indian Ocean kitchen and front of house teams.
It was great afternoon, and as usual the Indian Ocean team were as attentive as usual. Nahim said ‘ it was
nice to be able to share the experience with our customers instead of attending an awards ceremony. We
were pleased to have had Pat at the restaurant and we hope he decides to visit us again soon!

Tameside Markets have added
another prestigious award to
their portfolio.
At December’s ‘How Green Is
Your Market Award’
ceremony in Barnsley,
Ashton’s popular market took
the honours, firstly in the
Regional Award category and
then completed a great
double in beating all comers
to take the National Award as
the country’s greenest
market.
Ashton Market triumphed over competitor markets as far afield as Somerset and
Morpeth in Northumberland in this hotly contested National Market Traders
Federation event.
The event is a National Environmental Competition staged by the NMTF which
monitors and encourages more recycling within a market and includes such items
as creating more recycling points, upping the amount of bin collections, increasing
cardboard and packaging recycling and even food waste.
Executive Leader Cllr Kieran Quinn said: “I’m delighted to see Ashton Market’s
dedicated work to promote the eco message and influence the habits of traders and
shoppers has won national recognition. Tameside Council has an ongoing
commitment to reducing the borough’s carbon footprint as well as helping local
residents and businesses to take steps to lead more environmentally friendly lives
and this award helps to highlight these continued efforts.”
Film Review
Another Year
By Mike Kemble
What better way to reminisce, than to look back at some of the films of 2012? Another year, another
dollar as the saying goes, and it’s been a great payday for the blockbusters once again! Top-grossing
films included The Avengers, The Dark Night Rises and The Amazing Spider-Man, which firmly kept our
love-in for all things comic as we briefly joined them in their daily struggle to save us from imminent Armageddon. It’s a wonder someone didn’t direct a film around the
Mayan day of apocalypse, which thankfully we all survived in mid-December. Other films of a similar vain that did exceptionally well included the final instalment of the
Twilight saga, though don’t become too despondent, as the ending of one franchise usually means the replacement by another, as I’m sure will be attested by the success
of The Hunger Games, the first film in a trilogy written by Suzanne Collins. There’s always another route to take of course, and that’s the prequel approach, with Peter
Jackson releasing The Hobbit to build on his hugely successful Lord of the Rings trilogy, although the decision to split the Tolkien short story in three tells you all you
need to know about the priorities of filmmaking. Furthermore, why stop there? A franchise can go on and on Ad infinitum. And what other series has been more
successful in doing this than Bond? Celebrating its 50th anniversary last year with the release of Skyfall, it’s hard to imagine if the story will ever end? The year also saw
another triumph for documentary filmmaking, starting in February with the release of This Is Not a Film, a political snapshot of the Iranian regime through the eyes of the
director Jafar Panahi, who has been under house arrest since 2010 and is
prohibited from directing, writing and participating in any media work for the next
twenty years.
Marley provides a great biographical account of the legendary Jamaican singersongwriter.
The Imposter gives a quite astounding account of a French man, who in
1997 impersonated a young Texas boy after his disappearance at the age of 13 in
1994. The Queen of Versailles presents an unflinching insight into how the other
half live through its depiction of grotesque wealth and how it can be quickly lost on
the back of a bit of misfortune that was the economic car crash of 2008. While
Chasing Ice gives even more weight to the argument that we are destroying the
planet at a monumental rate. However, a review of the year wouldn’t be complete
without a list, and my top 10 films of 2012 in no particular order are: The Master,
Amour, Sliver Linings Playbook, Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, 21 Jump Street,
This Is Not a Film, Prometheus, Holy Motors, Life of Pi and The Descendants. My
award for most horrendous film of the year, without question (though there were a
fair few to choose from), is for the truly ridiculous The Cabin in the Woods. How it
ever got a cinematic release is beyond me!
Films to look out for over 2013
Before Midnight (TBC): If you’ve never seen Before Sunrise (1995) or Before
Sunset (2004), then I recommend you do as you’ll be catching-up on one of the
most romantic love stories in the history of cinema. Another nine years on in the
lives of Jesse and Celine and it remains to be seen what card life has played them
next?
Django Unchained (January): Quentin Tarantino’s film is supposedly very, very
good. A slavery-era western starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Foxx and a
rumoured masterful turn by Samuel L Jackson.
Lincoln (January): It’s the Oscars season very soon so the big hitters are out.
Steven Spielberg directs the wonderful Daniel Day Lewis as the mighty past
president of 19th century America.
Star Trek Into Darkness (May): JJ Abrams’ second outing as director of the sci-fi
classic sees the younger crew of the Enterprise looking to stop a one-man weapon
of mass destruction.
The Saddleworth Creative Network’s Christmas Craft Festival took place at the
Uppermill Civic Hall on Saturday and Sunday 8-9th December. With over 1800
visitors passing through the doors over the weekend at this latest festival, the
family popularity is clear.
As usual it was more than just your average craft market. There were many
traditional and modern crafts, such as ‘Ma’s Ba’s’, ‘My Wonderful Little
Designs, ‘Olive and Rose’ and ‘Woozlewood’ . Also lots of the local handmade
food favourites, with ‘Spread the Love’ wonderful jams and chutneys and
Oliviccio with hampers of their wonderful handmade food items. Local author Jan Davey
was also there promoting and selling her book ‘Life at Jericho’.
There was loads to keep the children amused, with face-painting, balloon animals
from Ballooniversal and of course the magical Father Christmas Grotto. Neela at
‘Creation Station’ entertained the children with her brilliant art and crafts and ‘The
Hazelnut Bakery’ also returned with a cupcake decorating stall. The teashop area
was serving food and drinks courtesy of ‘Ravenstone Catering.’
Many of the stalls were doing craft demonstrations throughout the day, such as
Mary Guest showing how she produces her beautiful felted items and Julian
Birtwell demonstrating how he creates his wonderful wooden products.
All in all it was a fantastic festive weekend for all the family and the network are
glad to say that you can look forward to more from them with their future
festivals planned for throughout 2013. It is lovely to see that there is such a
wealth of local creative talent in the local area.
“Thanks to everyone for all your help and support over the last 12 months. We
Exercise-4u has been created by Mark Aston and Adrian Willey to assist people with
getting fit, losing weight and toning up whether in their private studio, outdoors or
your own home. Mark, a sports science graduate from Loughborough University
and former PE teacher will be already known to a lot of people through his coaching
football at 3D Dynamos and also running soccer camps at Saddleworth School
during the school holidays. Adrian has played Basketball for over 20 years in the
Manchester League and both started studying to become personal trainers early
last year deciding they could give clients a far superior service if they joined forces.
Many of the ideas they had were very similar focussing on creating an environment
where people could train in a private studio on appropriate equipment, receive
motivation and guidance to achieve their weight loss and fitness goals.
Having the studio allows the client and trainer to focus on their work out with the
client receiving individually structured programmes. As the Saddleworth weather
can often be unpredictable the indoor facility gives the best of both worlds. When
the weather is good, the clients if they wish can make use of the fantastic outdoor spaces in surrounding Delph.
The opening prices for Personal Training are £25.00 per hour for a 1 to 1
session. However, if you reserve a block booking they offer a great deal at
ten 1 hour training sessions for only £200.00! Each person who books a 1
to 1 personal training session will also receive a free induction to
assess what their individual goals are and how they can achieve them
working together. As part of the personal training package, Adrian and Mark
are able to offer nutritional advice to all clients to help them towards a fit and
Celtic...
Hoping For A Happy New Year!
After a promising start to the first half of the season, the boys from Bowerfold find
themselves in the top ten thanks to a number of good results which has kept them
in the hunt. Although a little way off leaders Chester (who seem to be running away
with it) Celtic are still only a few points off the play off places, with real promise to
kick on and hopefully gain a well deserved promotion to the Blue Square Premier!
It's going to take every bit of manager Jim Harvey's motivational skills to drive his
young stars to glory this season. With
optimism again high in the camp, there
certainly isn't any reason why this
dream can't be achieved!
In other news, Neil Wolstenholme, a
former Celtic player back in the early
1980s, sponsored Stalybridge Celtic's
game with Workington and received a
Brother GL Label Printer, courtesy of
Celtic commercial partners Brother UK
Ltd., of Audenshaw, which was
presented by Celtic chief executive Syd
White. Neil, now living in South
Manchester, sponsored in the name of
his business, Wilmslow Tax Solutions.
magnificent this
festive season -
into the spirit of
things by
wearing Santa
hats - thanks to
the great work
of Janet (left) and Emma, Celtic's top
ladies! Also, Stalybridge
Celtic's long-serving top chef Rob
Broomhead, who has served the club
for nigh on 15 years now, was in
festive mood against Workington
wearing his Santa hat as he served a
plate of sarnies to staff who had
worked hard on the morning of the
match. Well done that man!
HOPE FOR JUSTICE
WINTER BALL 2012
On November 15th the
White hart Inn in
Lydgate played host
to the Hope for
Justice Winter Ball.
Over 120
businesses
attended a
glamorous
evening of
Champagne,
fine food and
entertainment
to celebrate
the lives changed by the
work of Hope for Justice. Over
£6,500.00 was raised on the
evening for the charity
through raffle sales, auction
items and one off donations.
Jo Bennett, one of the
organisers for the evening
commented, “The evening was
a huge success, the food was
fabulous, and the band, ‘The
Learmont’s’ had everyone
dancing and we were all blown
away by people’s generosity for
this very worthwhile cause.”
Ben Cooley, CEO for Hope for
Justice gave a stirring and informed
talk about the organisations
commitment to uncovering and
abolishing the hidden crime of human
trafficking in UK. Ben said, “The trade
in human life is taking place on a vast
global scale and is the world’s fastest
growing organised crime, and its big
business. Drugs and guns can only be
sold once, but criminals can sell a
victim’s services again and again.”
Last year Hope for Justice assisted in
the rescue of 78 victims of trafficking
in the UK. Zoe was trafficked into
the UK from the purpose of sexual
exploitation, sold from man to man
and town to town until Hope for
Justice rescued her. For more
Lifestyle Fitness Fundraisers On Course To Completing
The Distance!
In the last issue you may have remembered our story of a group of kind hearted fitness fanatics in Saddleworth
who are attempting to complete a challenge that really is quite amazing. Well, we are pleased to say that
although they still have a quite a way to go, the crew are continuing to row their hearts out in order to save
somebody else's.
Local fund raiser Gill Bussey and Lifestyle Fitness Centre owner Derek Ireland are hoping to try and raise money to
buy a life saving defibrillator to keep at the gym in case it is needed by anyone in need of some rapid life saving
treatment either at the gym or surrounding areas. A defibrillator is a life-saving machine that gives the heart an
electric shock in some cases of cardiac arrest. This is called defibrillation and can save lives. Cardiac arrest is when
the heart stops pumping blood around the body. When someone has a cardiac arrest, defibrillation needs to be
prompt. For every minute that passes without defibrillation chances of survival decrease by 14 percent. Research
shows that applying a controlled shock within five minutes of collapse provides the best possible chances of survival.
Rotary President John Ainley under
starters orders with Lifestyle owner
Derek Ireland, Gill Bussey and Peter
Ashworth, Chairman of the Rotary
Gill, Derek, a whole host of gym members and anyone else who fancies getting
involved, are in the process of trying to row the total distance around the British
Isles which totals exactly 11,073 miles. Since the challenge started in October,
the crew still have 9,000 miles to go, but with your support and donations, they
hope to complete the distance in the near future and raise the funds needed.
Even President of the Saddleworth Rotary, Mr John Ainley, was on hand to lend
his support and complete a mile for the team.
"We've had a great response so far from a lot of members and even members of the public who are trying to help us raise the £1,500
needed to buy one of these very important, and potentially life saving machines." Says Gill. "Whether somebody wants to row one mile
or a hundred, they are welcome to come down to the gym. The more sponsors we can accumulate, the better."
Gill and Derek are currently applying to the British Heart Foundation to see if they would qualify for a defibrillator at a discounted
price. If they do qualify, then any surplus money raised will go directly to one or more of the heart charities.
Anyone wishing to get involved in the rowing or would simply like to make a donation to help them reach their target can either call
COMPANIONS
A Saddleworth Based Care Company Giving Back Independence
Established in 2005, Companions are a team of dedicated and professional carers with extensive
experience in companionship and care of the elderly. With over ten years experience their staff offer a
standard of service that is second to none. Based in Uppermill, the team care for those in need of help
in Saddleworth and surrounding areas. They are all local people who understand the needs of the local
community.
The company is owned by Susan Shaw and Yvonne Gatley, who both saw a niche within the industry to
provide a genuine care company that treat people with the respect and dignity they deserve. As
recognition for their hard work, both Susan and Yvonne were invited to a garden Party at Buckingham
Palace to receive a care award for 'Outstanding Service' during the Queens Diamond Jubilee
celebrations.
Companions offer reassurance and help with everyday activities both inside and outside
the home, and they can be there when your family or friends can't! They are able to help
anyone who may otherwise be confined to the home or local area, giving independence
and companionship to people who may feel insecure and lonely, especially when the
family live outside the area. The Companions team can be reassuringly nearby when
they're needed.
All members of Staff carry identification and are police checked. They are all fully insured
and meet with Health & Safety regulations, and are first aid qualified.
Companions also offer group activities for the people that they care for, which includes
anything from shopping expeditions to theatre trips or meals out in small groups of like
minded individuals. Groups are always accompanied by Companions and they can be an
ideal way for a full time carer to get a much needed day off.
So whether it's a fun day out, help to get to a medical appointment, a helping hand
around the house, or just a bit of company from time to time, then Companions are the
local friendly care company you can always rely on. For information, please contact the
team today on Tel: 01457 874962.
First Joint Nativity Play a
Success!
Swan Meadow Nurseries combined to provide a wonderful day for
parents, friends and children from both Swan Meadow Private Day
Nursery and The Cottage Private Day Nursery at their annual Nativity
Play.
The traditional nativity was performed at Delph Methodist Church
following a lovely reception at the nursery, with home baked seasonal
snacks and freshly brewed Mulled wine. Attendance was fantastic as
usual, and because this was the first time children from both Pre-Schools
were involved, staff were even more nervous than previous years (if
that’s possible).
However, there was no need for concern because the children were
simply triumphant in their rendering of the Christmas Story. Lots of
smiles all round, excellent behaviour throughout the whole day, and wonderful singing, all the way to Bethlehem.
Take a look at the photographs and I’m sure you’ll agree that our first joint venture with The Cottage was a
great success for both parents and children. Perhaps the MEN for 2013 ?!
Happy New Year to everyone from all the staff at Swan Meadow, and The Cottage.
Specialists in Dry Stone Walling
Wilstone are a reputable local
business who are Specialists in dry
formed in 1994 by Ian Wilson, who
has always been involved with
stone work. His father was a
building inspector, as well as
having a keen interest in dry stone
walling, so Ian`s knowledge and
enthusiasm basically stemmed
from there.
Ian is a professional member of the
Wilstone have recently been contracted to build a number of stone styles on public
footpaths through Peak Park Planning, as well as a bridge in the Peak National Park. 2012
was a great year for the team who competed at the prestigious Royal Horticultural Show at
Tatton Park in Cheshire, held in July. To be selected is indeed a great honour as all
participants need to be chosen by a select committee in London's West Minster before
being invited to take part. However, Wilstone, in partnership with Glossop Garden Centre
Ltd, Charlie Williams (Nook Design) and GK Wilson Garden Services Ltd were chosen as the
overall winners of the Back to Back Garden category. A great achievement to the team.
Ian employs a small team of specialist construction workers, who together ensure that the
job is completed to an exceptionally high standard. Wilstone can offer comprehensive and
creative design, providing a fresh and imaginative approach to a variety of briefs.
So, whether you have a tumbled wall needing repair or are considering having a new wall or
feature, Wilstone are the specialists to contact this New Year. Well constructed dry stone
walls can last for decades, even hundreds of years, so make sure you get it done right first
Movember Madness For
The Village People
Fundraisers
the challenge worldwide
to help raise
awareness and help
support The Prostrate
Cancer Charity.
So on the 1st
December a bunch of
kind hearted locals
decided to mark the
end of the month to
showcase their facial
furniture in style by
The quaint village of
Delph looked like
something out of a
Village People music
video at the start of
December as a
number of local
residents donned
their finery to raise
money for the
Movember cause.
Millions of blokes
have been taking up
getting well and truly dressed up for the
occasion.
Following a tour (or two) of the village
pubs, the lads, which included Matt
Broadbent, Mark Paterson, Alex
Padgham, Craig Brown, Simon and Scott
Longley, Peter Smith and Aaron Daniels
to name but a few ended up in the Bulls
Head to be joined by landlord Stuart
Thewlis to complete the mammoth shaveoff!
"A massive thank you goes out to
everyone who got involved in The Bulls
Head Tash Club and everyone who
donated." A happy Matt Broadbent (aka
Hulk Hogan) told us. "We managed to
raise £1400 and our team was the 1689th
highest fundraising team overall which is
fantastic."
That certainly is good going so very well done to all the lads who took part! In total
the UK raised £18.18 Million and overall worldwide, more than £73 Million pounds
was
raised.

Sing the New Year in
with....
THE SADDLEWORTH
SINGERS!
The Christmas Concert at Uppermill Methodist Church was a very
successful and enjoyable evening. However the festive event was
tinged with some sadness as it signaled the last concert to be
conducted by Judy Lund, The Saddleworth Singers renown
Musical Director of eight years.
The choir sang old and new favourites, a song about the fate of two goslings in the run-up to Christmas and a humorous rendition of The Twelve Days After
Christmas. Fitz Brass, a young quintet of ex-students from the RNCM, entertained with expertise and enthusiasm and accompanied the choir and audience in
singing three traditional carols which gave a rousing start to the celebration of Christmas.
Now the New Year is well and truly under way, do you fancy taking up a new fulfilling hobby?
If so then the Singers has a long standing and faithful membership of ladies of all ages and musical ability.
They rehearse on Tuesday evenings from 7.30 - 9.30pm at Springhead Community Centre on Ashes Lane.
Singing encourages a feeling of well being and new singers of all abilities will be assured of a warm and
helpful welcome. So come and join them. You will be made to feel most welcome!
The choir prides itself on performing a wide variety of songs from both light and serious, ranging from
Blues to Jazz, Classical to Folk and Romantic to ABBA. They are also happy to sing for your special event!
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY!
BELL SECURITY LOCKS
Get Piece Of Mind This 2013!
Thousands of homes across the
country are at risk because of a
design weakness in uPVC door locks.
The problem lies in the lock cylinder,
no matter how good the multi point
locking mechanism appears. If the
cylinder is compromised, the multi
point lock can be opened in seconds.
In 2012, the BBC aired a programme called 'Inside Out' which highlighted
the vulnerability of the standard uPVC door locks. With this in mind it is
worth considering upgrading your cylinder to one of the New KITE
MARKED CYLINDERS.
Independent locksmiths BELL SECURITY LOCKS are the local friendly
company you can rely on, offering free advice and quotations. Whether
for domestic or commercial properties, Bell Security Locks will ensure
that the work undertaken is completed to highest possible standard.
They have a long list of satisfied clients including estate agents, solicitors,
property maintenance companies, landlords, public houses, letting agents
and more!
Manchester, who worked for a coal company for about 25 years before he set up on his
own. His son Stephen worked with his father from the age of 13 years helping collecting the
monies and writing tickets until he then learned how to carry the coal and bag off an autobagger
wagon. Stephen finally took over the whole business in 1992 when his father
became to ill to carry on.
Wendy (Stephen's Wife) also joined the business in 1992, helping by driving collect empty
bags and writing tickets, collecting the monies, until to this day has her own wagon doing
deliveries, carrying the coal and all the responsibilities that goes with it.
Stephen and Wendy used to run their business out of a coalyard in Openshaw in Greater
Manchester until it finally closed and they set up their own coal yard on Adamson Industrial
Estate, Raglan Street, Hyde in Greater Manchester in 2004, which as gone from strength to
strength.
Remember NOW is still the time to see if your fire needs a service for the rest of this
Winter! A full range of services (including chimney sweeping) is available. For more
A local playgroup
received a very early
Christmas present
from an unusual and
most welcomed
source!
The Saddleworth Special Needs Playgroup are once again very grateful to the kind heartedness of the Car Club and are
looking forward to putting funds into good use!
They have been going for over 40 years providing help for tots with special needs. Originally funded by the Saddleworth
Women's Institute it has since relied on donations and local generosity to stay operating. The group, which operates as
a registered charity, always has a waiting list and takes youngsters with and without special needs. With a number of
staff, trustees and many volunteers, it has proved to be an essential part of the local community.
Sue Jones & Kath Humpheries (play leaders at the
Saddleworth Special Needs Playgroup) attended a meeting of
the American Car Club North West in November to receive a cheque for the
amazing sum of £1,400. The amount had been raised at the Classic Car Show in
Uppermill during the Yanks Weekend last Summer.
The event is held every year and the Car Club had once again adopted the
Playgroup as it's charity for that show, which is held on the King George V
Playing Fields. This was it's
fifth year and the event was
sponsored by the Saddleworth
Round Table which enabled the
American Car Club to give the
Playgroup this substantial
amount.
