Vanpoulles Limited is a long established family business, founded in 1908 to supply the 

Church with all types of ecclesiastical requisites. We have now been trading for over 100 

years and have a wealth of experience in supplying quality Church furnishings across the 

denominations. 

We offer a very comprehensive range of products including candles & consumables, a 

vast array of ecclesiastical textile items and metalware along with woodwork items and 

statuary. The original 1908 Vanpoulles Bros. catalogue listed a range of clerical wear in 76 

different product types which has been built upon over the years to an unequalled range 

of almost 7,000 designs of both textile and non-textile items, in both modern and 

traditional styles. 

In addition to our stock designs we also undertake numerous special commissions across 

our product range, from chasubles and frontals to metalware and woodwork items, 

including carved wood statues. 

At Vanpoulles we value our customers and pride ourselves on our customer service. Our 

Sales Department is available for friendly service, advice and current stock availability of 

all our product lines. 

Orders can be placed with us either online, 24 hours a day, or via email, phone, fax or in 

person at our showrooms in Crawley, West Sussex near Gatwick Airport, where a large 

range of our goods are on display. We already despatch items both throughout the UK 

and world-wide and have considerable experience in export and welcome enquiries from

we are the sole UK distributor for their internationally acclaimed range of products.

Our most popular clergy cassock alb, these garments are designed for 

wearing under a chasuble, as a vestment for concelebration, for baptism, 

Home Mass or for lectors and all are produced in a range of elegant 

wash-and-wear fabrics. 

Convenient double breasted coat-style cassock albs with fabric covered 

buttons with elegant front and back pleats ensuring freedom of 

movement. The collar is finished with a fixed amice, concealing clothing

These elegant interchangeable superfrontals are lined, 

interlined and easy to attach. They are provided with a 

velcro strip for attaching to the altar cloth. The ‘hook’ 

velcro is attached to the altar cloth with the ‘loop’ section 

on the superfrontal making it possible to leave the main 

cloth on the altar. With these superfrontals a heavy altar 

cloth should be used e.g. in Omega fabric (see 63-51 

below) to prevent slipping.

Traditional Frontals 

All frontals are made to order and variations to any of the 

designs illustrated can be made or alternatively frontals 

can be made to your own specification. Quotations are 

available on request. Details of the range of fabrics and 

trimmings available can be found on pages 69-75. 

To provide a quotation we require accurate sizes in either 

metric or imperial measurements, details of the fabric and 

any trimmings required, along with the preferred design 

and method of hanging. 

Methods of Hanging. 

Most traditional frontals are now made in one piece with an 

integral superfrontal section if required and the majority 

use one of the following methods of hanging: 

A. Cloth Over The Altar. 

The frontal is attached to a linen or other cloth which goes 

over the altar table and part way down the back, very often 

with an open seam at the end to take a bar or similar to 

counterbalance the weight. 

B. ‘Fitan Bar’ System. 

A lightweight metal ‘fitan’ bar is permanently attached to 

the front of the altar which accepts special brass ‘fitan’ 

clips which are sewn onto the back of the frontal itself.

Fitan Bar System 

A simple and practical method of hanging frontals. The ‘Fitan’ 

system consists of a lightweight metal bar (A) which is permanently 

attached to the front edge of the altar table, flush with the top, by 

means of screws (only 3 or 4 are required, depending upon altar 

length). At each fixing point the spacer pieces (B) hold the bar 

slightly away from the altar allowing the brass ‘fitan’ clips (C), 

which are sewn onto the reverse of the frontal itself about every 8”, 

to clip over the bar. Changing frontals is extremely easy and can 

be done by one person without disturbing the altar furnishings. The 

bar is not unsightly and if no frontal is in use, can be covered by 

the overhang of the altar cloth.

Plate and Brassware 

We are able to undertake the repair and restoration 

of most ecclesiastical metal items in our silver and 

brass workshops. 

This service includes silver plating and gold plating 

and the repair or replacement of damaged or worn 

components on plated or solid silver items, all carried 

out by our skilled craftsmen 

We are also experienced in the repair and restoration 

of brassware of all types including re-polishing and 

lacquering. 

Quotations are available completely free of charge 

but it is necessary for our workshops to view the 

articles before any quotation can be given. 

Engraving 

Machine and hand engraved inscriptions can be undertaken on the 

majority of solid silver, plated or brass items. Details of the required 

inscription are required in writing along with instructions as to the 

position of the engraving on the particular item. Quotations for 

engravings are available free and without obligation on receipt of details

in a variety of materials and in a choice of lettering styles. 

We are able to offer engraved plates in brass, bronze, 

aluminium or laminates in a choice of finishes. 

Plates can be supplied with any required logos or boarders. 

Circular, curved or shaped plates are also available and a 

polished hardwood mount can also be supplied for any plate. 

Two or four screw holes can be provided for fixing or if 

required plates can be supplied with a self adhesive backing. 

Quotations are available on receipt of details in writing of 

the required wording, choice of material and approximate size 

of plate, along with the relevant information regarding fixing. 

Our engravers are very experienced in setting out inscriptions 

but are happy to follow any suggestions you may have and

Care & Cleaning of Solid Brass 

Solid brass is an alloy of copper and zinc and tends to oxidize (tarnish) when exposed to air. It is important to firstly establish 

whether the brass item is lacquered or not. 

Lacquered brass should not tarnish and so should not require any cleaning, save the removal of dust with a soft dry cloth, as 

required. Lacquered brass should NOT be cleaned with any proprietry brass cleaner, which will damage the lacquer, as will water. 

Periodically the item may required professionally re-lacquering. 

Unlacquered brass will tarnish and go dull but can easily be restored to it’s full luster by simply polishing with a proprietry brass 

cleaner. It is easier to clean it regularly rather than let the tarnish build up over a long period. You can do no damage to unlacquered 

solid brass using ‘elbow grease’ and a proprietry cleaner. 

Care & Cleaning of Solid Silver & Silverplate 

Silver Plate - Cleaning silver plate requires a light touch. Plate is not solid silver but a simple coating of silver. It is highly susceptible 

to damage from the cleaning process. Wash in warm soapy water each time after use and dry thoroughly. To remove tarnish use a 

non-abrasive commercial silver cleaner that specifically states it is suitable for silverplate. 

Solid Silver - To polish solid silver items apply a small amount of silver polish to a soft cloth, firmly buff the item in a circular motion, 

rinse well in warm water, then dry thoroughly with a soft cloth.

Overseas Despatch Carriage is charged at cost. We will be pleased to provide a quotation prior to despatch of the order. 

Damaged goods must be reported within 24 hours of receipt or claims will not be allowed (carrier terms). Please keep all packaging for 

inspection in cases of damage. 

Unsatisfactory or unwanted goods must be returned before credit can be allowed. We will be happy to reimburse return carriage 

costs in cases where the goods are damaged, faulty or incorrect. We can often arrange for our carrier to call and collect the goods 

from you and return them to us. Your account and invoice numbers must be included in the parcel as well as reason for return. 

Returns of incorrectly ordered goods or goods no longer required must be cleared with Vanpoulles before return (at your expense). 

These items must be returned in an unused and fully re-saleable condition. We reserve the right not to accept returns of non-faulty,
