Mickey Raphael – Part 2
Was there ever an issue within your family, about you, as a young
man, venturing out to be a professional musician?
Well…they weren’t really…my dad had no idea what the future would
hold, you know, I’m sure he was a little paranoid about that, but I
got with Willie (Nelson) when I was 20…but they were supportive,
because I was out working. They didn’t necessarily know what the
future would hold.
Was there ever a point in time you questioned if it was going to work
out? What do I have to do to have something to fall back on?
Yeah, it has the last couple of weeks..(laughter) I really loved what I
was doing, and I always knew I wouldn’t get rich and famous off of
it..It’s just a labor of love.
Do you try to limit your session work these days to fit your
schedule?
I will take anything that’s offered, if it’s it’s good, you know? I haven’t
really turned down anything because of my time, even if I’m really
busy, I try to work it in, unless it’s just really horrible….and I can’t
really remember anything I turned down. I can generally always
make time.
Mickey Raphael
Ever a time you flatly declined to lend your name to a project based
on who it is and the market they cater to?
No, unless it really sucked, or was stupid. Maybe once in my career,
but I can’t think of what the project was. You know I might have to
pass if maybe they were a little too demanding, or something….
hey, you know what, there was something! There was a project.
A guy wanted me to play on a song for a movie. It turned out it
was a rhythm track and it was about 10 minutes long, and I was
creating the whole melody, and I was like “what’s happening here”?
I’m writing this song, and the it’s my song and the guy wasn’t paying
any money, and I said I pass. He had nothing there, and he said “just
fill in 10 minutes.” There was only chump change in it. Had it been a
very cool project, it wouldn’t have mattered. At that point he had me
writing the song for him, and I like getting paid for my time, but that
was a little squirrelly, and kind of pushy about the time. And again,
no money. If it was cool I would have done it, but at the time it was
more trouble than it was worth. I would like to get scale, unless
it’s a major record, then I’d like to get double scale. Unless it’s all
day, then I’d like to get a flat rate for the day. I’m never going to
turn something down because of money. If it’s good, I’ll do it. If a
guy is offering me no money for a cool project, I’ll just say “I can’t
do it for that, so I’ll do it for free.” That’s if I really want to do the
project. If a young songwriter comes to me and says I really have
no money, but I have this song, and if I thinks it’s killer, and he
gets a record deal, I’ll do it, and say you pay me full price later. If
it’s good, I’m not going to turn anything down. If it’s not good, the
price goes up!
When you go out on the road now with Willie, is he showing any
signs of slowing down? He’s almost 80, and his life has always
been on the road.
None that I can see. It looks like we are going to be a little more
civilized now….two weeks on – two weeks off, that gives us a little
more time at home, but we still work the same amount of cities.
We won’t have five days off on the road somewhere. It’s great – it
gives me time to make plans. You know, I have a life. We used to
do 10 week tours so this is great. After Willie I really don’t think I’ll
go on the road. Maybe a few short tours with someone I like, but
I really can’t tell you I am looking for work right now. 38 years on
the road is a long time.
Is Nashville conducive to your life?
I love Nashville! It’s a great town. This is where records are being
made.
Mickey Raphael is the quintessential harmonica player in American
music today. Next time you here a cool harp lick on a record, check
the liner notes. Mickey may have played it. Check him out at www.
Around Fredtown...
by Ms. Fredericka S. Burg
Wow! Are we glad that the Lenten Season is upon
us! February in Fredericksburg
was wild! Between the Fest
Nacht and Fasching Costume
Balls over $20,000 was raised
for local charities. Amazing costumes,
elaborate decor by Maggie
Gillespie Designs and stellar
entertainment ensured that
everybody is READY for Lent!
Since a picture is worth a thousand
words, here you go:
At left are the King & Queen of Fasching Fredericksburg, Roger & Sherrill
Winter Pictured left to right at Fest Nacht are Cookie Althaus, Luz
Flores, Melanie Corbett & Irma Bustamante.
We left Fredericksburg’s RS Hanna Gallery after First Friday Artwalk
last month feeling just so fortunate to be afforded such culture! It’s absolutely
charming walking from Gallery to Gallery at sunset while sampling
wine and cheese and viewing beautiful works of art by such incredibly
talented Artists. The next Artwalk is Friday, March 2nd with extended
hours til 8pm. Highly Recommended!
Pictured left to right with Navajo Grill Owner, Mike Raymer, are Renewal
Artists, Katherine Lott, Stevie Lake and Deborah Harrington.
Fredericksburg’s Navajo Grill hosts it’s next Art show, March 30-Apil 1st,
“Own your own universe,” is what Terri Hendrix
says, in her songs and in her new book CRY TILL YOU LAUGH, The
Part That Ain’t Art. I heard Mary Clare give a reading from her new
book today, February 14, called 100 Voices of Change, and I read
the last chapter of Terri’s book, entitled “Change and the exploding
toilet.” Both women were documenting voices. And I am once again
reminded of the synchronicity that explodes daily in my life. In the
spirit of David Shields, I am sharing some of my own universe with
you this month.
The THMF has invited Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines to give a
songwriting workshop September 29, celebrating 25 years of THMF
history. Details later.
March 1-3 I am in Houston at the Texas State Historical Association
meeting, sharing my research on the voices of women in Texas
music. March 3-4 the Texas Heritage Songwriters Association is
inducting Townes Van Zandt, Lyle Lovett, and Robert Earl Keen into
the Hall of Fame, three voices I documented in my first oral history
in Texas music.
March 7 is the THMF coffeehouse at Schreiner University
showcasing the voice and writing of Stephanie Urbina Jones with
special guest, Florin Sanchez. My creativity class at Schreiner will
be creating displays on the voices of women, and my creative writing
class will read tributes during the open mikes both before and after
Stephanie performs.
She is an authentic Texas woman with family roots in Mexico, a
spirit the size of Texas, and a love big as Texas in her heart. This
woman has honored her own journey, one that includes a journey to
Nashville, a sponsorship with Arriba hot sauce, festival appearances
across the country, special Christmas projects, and a book of her
own someday! I know that about her. My students are responding to
her song “Gracias” in my writing class. All about learning with stories
and songs.
One of my great memories from February is the Fifth Annual Blues
Festival at Luckenbach. I heard Will Owen Gage showcase with
Ben Beckendorf as the first act at 3 p.m. Johnny Nicholas and
Scrappy Judd Newcomb looked as good as they sounded! And
Johnny’s new album, “Future Blues,” has been in my cd player
ever since. “Hell bent for the promised land,” might be my favorite,
but not a boring cut on the recording! I am totally in agreement with
the late, great Stephen Bruton when he says, “Johnny Nicholas Is
one of the best bluesmen ever, black or white. I can’t decide to rave
over the live performance or the cd. I know Johnny is also creating
a music series at his memorable venue up the Mason Highway from
Fredericksburg, The Hilltop Café, and I know I can always depend
on great food there! Cindy Cashdollar added the spice to his
show, just as she does each year at his November Big Band Bash.
Johnny has performed at our tribute to Jimmie Rodgers, and he is
an important part of our 25 th Silver Jubilee year……Texas Heritage
Music Foundation 1987-2012.
I also took the train from Albuquerque to Santa Fe after presenting a
paper at the Popular Culture Conference on a “Meal of Stories.” In Santa
Fe, the Shamanic man with deer horns and arms raised in supplication
called me into a gallery I once knew for the work of Frank Howell.
Now, “Worrell Gallery” is on the wall, and the new owners, Jay Boy
and Mary Adams, have created a showplace for Worrell’s compelling
expression of spirit and joy. I have been to New Art, Texas, to a concert
with Walt Wilkins on the Llano River at Bill’s studio, and I have glazed a
little wine glass at Easter as Bill insisted we all write songs. He is a full
call to self-expression, and my day in Santa Fe was magical because of
him. We went to Evangelo’s and heard an after blues jam with Xenobia
on keyboards (an original in “Hair” on Broadway), Soulman Sam, and
Jay Boy leading with those Texas sounds. Soulman Sam insisted on
honoring the Texas guests in the packed bar, and he sang “Floodin’
Down In Texas,” allowing us to feel the ghost of Stevie Ray in the room.
What a day in New Mexico.
I returned to Texas, shared a day in my American music class discussing
Bob Dylan projects and listening to students create their own response
to his life in their poetry, and I was reminded again, of the voices that call
out for listening. We can give those voices life through our creativity…in
many ways.
My 24 hours in Santa Fe were also spent visiting Sheila Doran Benyon
and Alex, a couple who had invited me to share their creative vision
working with special needs kids in Kerrville. Now they lived in an adobe
house in Seton Village atop a hill, giving me the full panorama of Santa Fe.
Suddenly I feel and hear a new call to create. My question is, “What?”
April 3-5 is the annual Texas Writers Conference where we feature
the indomitable Thom Moon Poet who will not allow you to deny your
creative voice, Kirpal Gordon, who has written a book of parables on
creative living, and Anne Schneider, a woman who insisted I take tango
lesson while leading her own Reiki classes, mask making, and poetry
performances. The schedule is at www.schreiner.edu. Don’t miss these
free workshops and the special reading Tuesday, April 3. The spoken
word coffeehouse will be Wednesday, April 4, with Anne leading the last
workshop at 10.30 a.m. Thursday morning. All in preparation for new
growth at the Easter season.
April 29 Sharity Productions I bringing Ray Price to the Cailloux
Performing Arts Center to sing with the Symphony of the Hills. What
a combination. More information ahead, but mark that date on your
calendar. Ray Price is one of THE voices of country music history, and
he is alive and kicking as at octogenarian.
Ending with a comment on Dylan’s huge project, 4 Cd’s of his songs,
with proceeds benefitting Amnesty International. I keep playing “One
More Cup of Coffee.”with Steve Earle singing. And Johnny has “It’s All
Over Now Baby Blue,” in an original rendition on his new recording. Yes,
everything does connect! And Dylan is one of the threads of our/my
generation. I discovered Adele through this project, singing “Make You
Feel My Love.” And I always do….feel the love! ils sont partis………KH
HARLEY’S
CORNER
by Harley David Belew
Who Should Be The Nominee?
It took me a long time to decide who I want to see as the
Republican candidate in the Presidential Election. The only guy I liked
was Herman Cain- until they told us he was a serial skirt chaser. I was
willing to forgive him for the first 3 but, hey.
So consider this: If Romney is the candidate the election will
be about Bain Capitol, wealth vs poverty, the “99%”, and class warfare.
Besides who can get excited about a guy who looks like a middle
aged Ken Doll and talks like an unconvincing chamber of commerce
pamphlet? Ron Paul? He reminds me of the forgetful grandpa who
wandered into the wrong family reunion. His Let’s-make-nice foreign
policy is Naiveté on Parade. Given enough rope I think ole Ron would
swing like a piñata in the breeze. Newt Gingrich is like the college professor
you love to hate: a pompously brilliant curmudgeon. Besides,
he makes Herman Cain look like the winner of the “Monogamist of the
Year” award.
With the above candidates the contest would be focused on
them instead of issues. However, if a True Believer, like Rick Santorum
is the nominee, Obama will be forced to campaign on the issues.
Santorum is passionate and has always stood for what he champions
now; Reagan Conservatism. So far, the best that Big Media can
dredge up against him is the fact that he believes in good and evil.
Wow, Good and Evil- what a concept. I’m speechless. Flabbergasted
even. But, seriously, wouldn’t it be nice to have an election based on
issues rather than character assassination?
Eating Cats
This week I read a story about a guy in the Bakersfield, CA area who
was trapping feral cats. No one knew why until his neighbor peeked
over the fence and saw the guy butchering a wild cat. Of course she
called the law. When the cops got there he was getting the skinned
feline ready for the grill. At first blush it seems cruel. But, think about
it for a minute. What happens to those wild cats when Animal Control
catches them? They gas them to death and throw them in the dump.
This guy was not eating pets. He was dining on feral cats. He was not
holding Santeria sacrifices, he was hungry. In hard times some people
eat cat food. Some eat cats. Perhaps he’s not cruel at all. He’s just
another victim of Obama’s bad economy.
“Psst, Hast Thee Got Milk?”
After a yearlong sting operation the Federal Government just busted
an Amish Farmer for selling an illegal substance. What kind of contraband
was this criminal mastermind peddling? Unpasteurized milk!
We’re talking the hard stuff- right out of the cow! The man with the funny
beard was smuggling that white foaming bootleg hooch across the
state line in the back of his buggy. But, our all-knowing, all-wise feds
put an end to the Milk Man Cartel. Whew! That’s edgy stuff. Taking
down hardened criminals like that must be spine-chilling, dangerous
work. The FDA says that fresh milk is “150 times more dangerous than
pasteurized milk”. That begs the question: “Just how dangerous is the
government approved stuff”? The bureaucrat’s answer is simple: Government
approved milk is 150 times less dangerous than milk straight
out of a cow. Can’t argue with logic like that. I’m just glad the human
race survived long enough for the Federal Government to take care of
us. “Thou hast the right to remain silent”.
