In 1539 <strong>the</strong> Knights Templar of Malta paid tribute to Charles V of Spain, by<br />
sending him a Golden Falcon encrusted from beak to claw with <strong>the</strong> rarest jewels --- but<br />
pirates seized <strong>the</strong> galley carrying this priceless token and <strong>the</strong> fate of <strong>the</strong> Maltese Falcon<br />
remains a mystery to this day.<br />
When <strong>the</strong>y learned of <strong>the</strong> fate of <strong>the</strong>ir tribute, <strong>the</strong> Knights Templar tried again in 1540,<br />
sending ano<strong>the</strong>r bird -- a duck made from onyx and gold, with jeweled eyes that glowed with<br />
an inner fire.<br />
This statue disappeared on <strong>the</strong> road to Toledo, never to be seen until this day.<br />
