Lord Seafield's predictions were more than ve*<br />

rifled, and Lady Emlyn's pupil did honour to her<br />

lessons. Vavasor Kendal found it convenient to<br />

pass a fortnight at Allanby on his road to the Loch-<br />

vardine Moors ;—and on the tenth day <strong>of</strong> his visit,<br />

Mr. Allanby found it necessary to turn his wife<br />

out <strong>of</strong> doors:—his Amelia,—the mother <strong>of</strong> his<br />

boys,—the pride if not the comfort <strong>of</strong> his age. —<br />

Poor old man !—heavily indeed was he fated to<br />

From the period <strong>of</strong> Mrs. Allanby's intimacy with<br />

the Tuftons and ill-omened friendship with Lady<br />

Emlyn, it may be concluded that Moorcr<strong>of</strong>t be-<br />

came somewhat neglected. Jane Esthope was not,<br />

however, <strong>of</strong> the number <strong>of</strong> those who widen the<br />

breach with an alienated friend by cold looks or<br />

warm words. She, either could not or would not<br />

see that, since the Lady <strong>of</strong> the Hall had linked
