Dear Friends,
Welcome to 34th Durga Puja of BASC in 2012.
We have waited all year long for this auspicious moment in anticipation of
being filled with joy and divine peace that accompany both our worship and our
festivities. Together let us pray and enjoy every single moment of this
celebration with our families and friends. Let us forgive and forget all our
differences and come together in worshipping Ma Durga.
BASC's rich cultural heritage goes back more than 40 years. This year we made the very first
attempt of documenting this heritage as milestones. We have contacted all past presidents who
helped create this milestone document. We thank all of them for their time and effort. This
document is included in the brochure and will be on display during the Pujas. We realize that this
is a work in progress and your input will make this document even richer.
BASC, Southern California's oldest and largest Bengali Organization, is like a large family – we
support each other in every facet of life and come to each other's aid in crises. To embrace new
members to the BASC family, we have instituted a New Members Welcome Committee this year.
This committee will bring new members together with existing members and make them feel
welcome in the community. I would request every member to help a new member and make him/
her feel at home. Remember, there was a day when we all were new in this community and new
friends enriched our lives and gave us a sense of belonging.
Our goal is to keep BASC open and transparent so that every member feels that he/she owns a part
of BASC. To attain this goal we have started conducting surveys after each program/event
collecting and documenting members’ inputs. We want to hear from all of you and take your
valuable inputs into consideration while making decisions in the future.
We began this year on an auspicious note: rejoicing in the rich Bengali culture of Kirtan and Sri
Chaitanya, we celebrated Dol/Holi (Festival of Colors) in Bharat Sevashram Sangha temple and
donated the proceeds to the temple. This was followed by two highly successful cultural programs:
in April, Ghazals by Sougata Banerjee was received with overwhelming appreciation and in June
another great classical program by Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty was also highly successful. We also
had our annual, fun-filled picnic in April. We plan to bring in 2013 with a joyous New Year's Eve
Party!
Extending our the cultural participation, we partnered with several community organizations such
as Ektaa Center and Music Circle. We collaborated in hosting cultural programs and increased
audience participation beyond the Bengali community which resulted in mutual benefit and
garnered greater recognition of BASC as a cultural organization.
These programs and events would not have been possible without your donation. BASC truly
appreciates all its sponsors who have been supporting us generously and have been doing so for
many years. Lastly, BASC's success is due to its hard working and dedicated volunteers. A big
salute and a huge THANK YOU to all our volunteers without whom it would not have been possible
to organize this year’s programs and events.

BASC Fondly remembers the friends we lost last year

এক দছত্ল, এক দমত্য় শনত্য় নীলোে িযশিগ সাংসাে ও
লস এত্ঞ্জত্লত্সে অগশি িন্ধু-সহ্কমবীত্েে শনত্য় নীলোে
জীিন অত্নক িৃহ্ত্ শছত্লা। িাঙাশলত্েে দুগবাপুত্জা ও
অনযানয অনুষ্ঠাত্ন নীলোে অিোন ও সহ্ায় া আমো সি
সময় মত্ন োখত্িা।
Ashis Ranjan Ghosh, born on 15 th of July, 1947, lost his
long battle with cancer at the age of 64, on June 12, 2012.
Ashis, nick named Mistu, grew up in a family of nine
brothers and sisters, under the care of a devoted mother
and an idealist father. He attended Indian Institute of
Technology and later immigrated to the United States,
following a brief stay in West Berlin. Ashis worked for
several companies in his long career as an accomplished
engineer, including American Airlines’ maintenance base
in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His latest employment was at Christie
Digital (Parent company Ushio America) in Cypress,
California. While working at Christie he filed for a US
Patent, and following a long process, he was awarded the
patent in 2010. His successful career aside, he had
unsurpassed devotion and care for his wife and two sons.
He also was the most loyal of friends. Ashis was and will
remain in our hearts, a beloved father, a cherished
husband, and an irreplaceable friend.

Classical Sabarni Dasgupta - Friday, October 26,9:00PM
Tabla
Sabarni Das Gupta is a highly accomplished musician
currently living in Southern California. She is a disciple of the
legendary Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty, one of the most well-
known exponents of Indian Classical Music. With years of
devotion and practice under his tutelage, she has mastered the
art form of kheyal. She has also trained with the Late ‘Bidushi’
Sipra Bose in music belonging to the semi-classical genre,
including the ‘Thumri’, ‘Dadra’, ’Bhajan’, and ‘Ghazal’. She has
performed at several music conferences and appeared in
different Television channels like Doordarshan, Akash Bangla
etc. She won prizes in the prestigious Dover Lane music
competitions (Silver medal in Kolkata, 2006), and was the gold
medalist in All-India inter-university youth festival for three
consecutive years 2006, 2007 and 2008.
Jyoti Prakas is truly a name to reckon with in the select band
of percussionists. Jyoti started learning Tabla from his father
Sri Nagendranath. He pursued his interest towards Tabla and
started learning from Late Pandit Sri Brojen Biswas and Sri
Sumantra Guha. Afterwards he came under tutelage of
Numero Uno, none other than Pandit Abhijit Banerjee. Jyoti
has established himself as a talented tabla player in both
commercial and classical forms . His mastery as a
percussionist has earned him the title SANGEET BIVAKAR.
He has participated in prestigious concerts in India and
abroad. He has been living in USA for last eight years and
has been successfully running a tabla School, called
“DHWANI ACADEMY of PERCUSSION MUSIC”, founded by
his Guru Pt. Abhijit Banerjee. He has accompanied several
stalwarts including Pt.Jasraj, Bidushi Purnima Chowdhury,
Famous Kathak dancer Pt. Chitresh Das, Shobha Kosar,
Rezwana Banya Chowdhury, Jayati Chakrabarty, Ramanuj
Dasgupta, Amit Kumar and others. Jyoti has also played for
the great EMMY Award, 2005.

Sarod : Pt Tejendra Narayan - Friday, October 26, 10:00PM
Tabla
Pandit Tejendra Narayan Majumdar is one of the best
-known sarod players of the present generation, He
has achieved the combination of excellence and
popular acceptability, which ensure one's place in
posterity. Tejendra is a pupil of two world-renowned
stalwarts of Indian Classical music, the Late Ustad
Bahadur Khan and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. One of the
best equipped musicians to carry on the Senia
Maihar mantle, Tejendra combines the technical
virtuosity of his gharana with an extraordinary tone,
touch and an ambient melody which transcends any
qualification. Above all, he has in abundant measure,
that indescribable ability to take the listeners along
with him - the rare quality that is the hallmark of
genius. He is also a Top Grade artist of A.I.R and
DOORDARSHAN. Within India, he is a regular artist
in the premiere concert circuit, while in Europe,
Canada and in the United States, his popularity has
ensured his regular representation in some of the
most prestigious concerts.
Pt. Shubhankar Banerjee is one of the most celebrated
percussionists of his generation. He received initial
training under Shri Swapan Shiva, the celebrated artiste
and teacher of Farukhabad Tabla Gharana. Later he
dedicated himself to learning from other Gharanas from
different maestros. In addition to being a reputed soloist,
Subhankar has accompanied some of the most
prominent celebrities of our country like Pandit Ravi
Shankar, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pandit Hariprasad
Chaurasia and Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma. He
performed in the prestigious “NOBEL PEACE PRIZE
CONCERT” in Oslo along with Pt. Shivkumar Sharma
and Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia. He was invited by Prince
Charles to perform in London with John Mc Laughin. He
has been presenting his music in countries like U.K,
U.S.A , Europe, Australia, Japan, Middle East, regularly
for last eighteen years.

Meghdoot - Saturday, October 26, 8:30 PM
Meghdoot (Meghdootam in Sanskrit) is perhaps the most famous creation of
poet Kalidas. Written in unique Mandakranta rhythm around 4th Century,
Meghdootam expresses the yearning of a newly married love-struck Yaksha
who has been exiled by his master in 111 shlokas. Yaksha befriends a
passing cloud (Megh) and asks Megh to take his passionate message to his
beloved. Yaksha also describes what Megh will see during his journey.
Since then Meghdoot has been translated in numerous languages and has
influenced many poets, including recently departed famous Bengali poet
Joydeb Basu, who wrote his own version of Meghdoot from a very different
context. Other notable poets who wrote on similar themes include
Rabindranath Tagore, Satyendranath Dutta, Narendra Deb, Naresh Guha,
and Buddhadeb Bose, to name a few.
As we joined hands in the journey of Meghdoot, we realized that the yearning
of separated lovers have held a special place in the hearts of Indians for
centuries, and the dimensions have added color to the pathos it evokes in the
reader. The lovers have called upon the cloud messenger in their effort to
reach the unreachable. North Indian monsoons have brought enough cloud
and rain that intensified the pain of separation and loneliness. In this
program we shall embark on a journey with Meghdoot and touch a few souls.
We shall experience how Meghdoot has influenced human emotions through
a wide spectrum of emotions through space and time.

Ujjaini - Saturday, October 26, 9:30 PM
Our marquee artist for Saturday night is the singing
sensation from Bollywood, Ujjaini Mukherjee. A
SaReGaMaPa Challenge finalist and winner of
SaReGaMaPa Ek Main Aur Ek Tu, Ujjaini received vocal
training from the maestro Pt. Ajoy Chakraborty and Pt.
Biresh Roy. She is now a highly sought after playback
singer and has done playback singing in Hindi, Bengali,
Telegu and other movies for music maestros like Aadesh
Shrivastava, Himesh Reshammaiya, Monty Sharma and
others. Recently, she was nominated for the Radio Mirchi
Awards Mumbai in the 'Upcoming Female singer
Category 2011 for the song "Manu Bhaiya" from superhit
Hindi movie Tanu weds Manu. She will be accompanied
by Farhan Zaidi (Zee TV SaReGaMaPa Challenge USA
2008 runner up), a talented singer with gifted voice, and
a live band of dazzling musicians from India. Get ready

your heart dance to her captivating music.
Sanchayita Chaudhuri - Sunday, October 27 , 2:00 PM
Sanchaita is a professional classical singer from Kolkata. She
received her training under the Late Pandit A. Kanan and the
late Bidushi Malabika Kanan. She constantly strives for
perfection and mesmerizes the audience in all her
performances. Her programs are frequently broadcast on All
India Radio/Doordarshan Kolkata, Delhi etc. She has been
designated as a "A" Grade Artist. Sanchaita has performed
superbly in various programs of All India Radio including the
Sunday Night Recital, the National Program 2000 & 2009 and
Akashvani Sangeet Sammelan in their Golden Jubilee Year
2004. In 2009 she performed in the National Program of
Doordarshan. Sanchaita is also excellent in light classical
including devotional songs like Shyama Sangeet. She has
been performing in various music conferences/concerts
organized by reputed organizations throughout India and
abroad.Sanchayita will be accompanied by Nabendu
Bhatacharya on Harmonium and Jyoti Prakas on Tabla.

together to pay tribute to one of Bollywood’s greatest
composer Rahul Dev Burman, fondly known as Panchamda.
In a multimedia extravaganza featuring over 35 musicians,
singers, dancers, anchors, models, along with live band,
light, sound and video, we will take you through an
extraordinary journey of Panchamda’s life, his hit
compositions and his awesome music. This legendary
composer has given music to over 357 films, numerous
private Bengali and Hindi albums, and even to this day, his
songs have been remixed the most. We hope to put up a magical show showing

Yes, the story really comes from the ancient epic. What? wait, no, not all of
it. We took liberty to tweak and sometimes completely change the ancient
plot ! Gone are the serious dialogs and complicated themes. Instead we have
the blind king offering beach-front villa to pacify Durjodhon, "Red Hot"
Droupadi swaying on stage, and even lord Krishna struggling to hold on to
his own. The actors sing in tunes of popular songs - from nursery rhymes to
Kirtan to raucous Bollywood tunes; but they tell the story of Arjun and
Durjodhon and Karno - in inimitable Pathsala way. Don't miss this hilarious
production by Pathsala students on Laxmi Puja night.

Parnava has a melodious voice that is capturing the imagination of Bengalis
young and old, both at home and abroad. He received training from the
legendary Pt. Ajoy Chakrabarty and has received numerous awards in high
profile competitions including, being crowned the
winner of Zee TV Bangla Golden Voice '2006.
He sings a variety of songs from Bengali Raag
Sangeet to Modern Bengali Songs, Ghazals and
Hindi Songs. The songs sung by veterans like
Hemanta Mukherjee, S.D. Burman, R.D. Burman,
Manna De, Kishore Kumar, Md. Rafi, Shyamal
Mitra and Manabendra Mukherjee inspire him.
Parnava's Album "Swapno Kuri" was selected as
the best music album and was awarded the
"Sharad Arghyo award-2007" in the annual
competition organized by Ananda Bazar Patrika,
ACC Cement and UCO Bank. He is currently
involved as the playback singer in a number of
Bengali films.
