Shaw’s cowfi sh (Aracana aurita)
Chordata – Osteichthyes
Shaw’s cowfi sh
belong to the boxfi sh family.
Unlike most other bony fi shes, boxfi sh
have an outer covering of large, thick
bony plates, that provide a protective
armour against predators. Because of
this armour, boxfi sh cannot swim very
fast to hunt, so they feed by blowing a
jet of water at the sand to expose prey
hidden beneath.
Did you know?
Boxfi sh are one of the bony
fi sh families that display sexual
dimorphism. This means that
you can tell the difference
between males and females by
the colours, patterns and
markings on their bodies.
