Donations A big thank you to all the people who donated money to the Rose Show. It has been gratefully received and put to good use. We hope that all members will take the opportunity to visit the World Rose Show running June 19 th to June 21 st . Photography A lot of overseas people are interested in the photography section and I have received a number of questions about the Rules and Regulations. Just to clarify: All photographs are to be 8” by 10” with a matte around them. This matte can be purchased at any photography shop or you can make one if you wish. The size of the entry can not exceed 11” by 14” including the matte, but it can be smaller as long as the photo is 8” by 10”. No glass or frames please. “Mounted” means you can put a piece of paper or cardboard on the back of the photo. Each photo must have the following: 1. An entry tag with each photo – attached to the back of the photos using cellotape. 2. Every photo must have the exhibitors name and exhibitor number written on the back of the photo. 3. Roses in the photo should be named on the entry tag – if possible. The name of the garden, park or landscape scene should be named if known. 4. Maximum of 3 photos per class per exhibitor. Photos will be displayed on black display booths. The will be velcroed to the surface of the display booth by the Show Committee. Judging takes place at 10:00 am, Friday June 19th, and there will be 2 judges. If there are any questions please contact me at (604) 261-6417. Photos can be dropped off at the Bayshore Hotel between 10 am and 10 pm on Thursday June 18 th or brought to the VCEC between 4 am and 9:30 am on Friday June 19 th – Show day. Registering to Receive an Exhibitor Number Please contact me if you do not wish to complete an online registration form to receive an exhibitor number. The exhibitor book will be at the June 9 th meeting. You can receive an exhibitor number after this date by contacting Sea to Sky and completing the online registration form. You can also get one at the Bayshore Hotel on Thursday between 10 am to 10 pm or at the VCEC Friday morning June 19 th between 4:00 am and 9:30 am. Exhibitors Now it is over to you! Transporting Roses to a Rose Show By Kathy Noble from her article 'A Rose Transportation System,' Canadian Rose Annual 1990 If you are planning to attend a rose show, the challenge will be to have your roses arrive at the show in good condition. This will require keeping the blooms cool to slow the aging process, maintaining bloom substance (moisture content), and preventing physical damage to the bloom, stem and foliage. To ensure that their roses are protected against damage and are kept cool, rosarians use many techniques to transport roses to a rose show. Generally, the farther one has to travel to a show, the more protection and cooling the roses need. To bring roses to a local show, it may only be necessary to carefully place the roses in a bucket or two. To minimize the tangling of leaves and stems, carefully put the roses, one at a time, into a bucket. Be systematic about this, placing them clockwise starting at 12 o'clock, and removing them moving counterclockwise from 11 o'clock. Remove them only once - at the show. A better method is to wrap each rose in a cone made of freezer paper with the waxed surface of the paper on the inside of the cone, and then place the wrapped roses in a bucket. The Rose Bed June 2009 For longer trips to rose shows, rosarians use insulated boxes that have ice packs to cool the roses during transit. In one type of homemade box, roses are stored vertically in cylinders made of a plastic litre soda bottle and freezer paper. An inch of water is placed in the cylinder before each stem is carefully stuffed into it. This method works well for travel by automobile. The same cutting, storage, and transportation techniques work for all types of roses. Of course, the containers are selected in proportion to the size of the roses. You will need: • A 12 oz. Styrofoam cup to cover each bloom. The cup should be 4 inches in diameter at the top, tapering to 2½ inches at the bottom, and 3 inches deep. • A clear polyvinyl tube to encase each stem and its foliage. The tube should be 3½ inches in diameter at the top, tapering to 1 inch at the bottom, and 12 inches long. • Enough water tubes for the number of roses that are being taken to the show. Use tubes that are 3 inches long and ½ inch in diameter. • Plastic wrap, rubber bands and mending tape. Take each Styrofoam cup and cut a slot from the centre to one edge of the bottom, and then up the side to the top (Figure 1). 19
