Definition of Terms<br />
Bodily Experience: “Perception and action through the medium of the <strong>body</strong> in the real world”<br />
(Ribeiro, 2005).<br />
Body Modification: “The permanent or semi-permanent deliberate altering of the human <strong>body</strong><br />
for non-medical reasons” (Eicher, Evenson, & Lutz, 2000, p. 7).<br />
Body Supplement: “Items that are placed on the <strong>body</strong>, most often thought of as garments, by<br />
Euro-Americans, but can also include jewelry and accessories” (Eicher, Evenson, & Lutz, 2000,<br />
p. 15).<br />
Brazilian Wax: A term that usually refers to depilation of hair from the entire pubic region.<br />
Depilation: The act of removing hair through mechanical or chemical means, so that the hair<br />
follicle is no longer visible.<br />
Grooming: Any form of modifying the pubic hair which can include trimming, depilation,<br />
dyeing, and/or shaping.<br />
Hygienic: “Tending to preserve or promote health; sanitary” (The American Heritage Dictionary<br />
of the English Language, 2000).<br />
Pornography: “Sexually explicit pictures, writing, or other material whose primary purpose is to<br />
cause sexual arousal” (The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, 2000)<br />
Prepubescent: “A child at the stage of development just before puberty” (Encarta World<br />
English Dictionary, 2009).<br />
Pubic Hair: “Hair in the pubic region; secondary sexual characteristic that develops during<br />
puberty” (Mosby's Dictionary of Complementary and Alternative Medicine, 2005).<br />
