From the Pastor’s Desk...
I recall very fondly walking the Tidal Basin in Washington,
D.C. and enjoying this time of year when the Japanese
Cherry Blossoms were in full bloom. The weather was usually
perfect this time of year. Winter had given way to spring, the
air was fresh, there was promise and hope in the air, for the
stark, bare, oppressive, and languid grays had surrendered to
the vibrant, teeming, and uncontainable colors of life. As
people walked beneath the beautiful canopy of blossoms,
there was a spring in their step and smiles on their faces. The
monuments of our great country were nearby as reminders of
duty, sacrifice, and triumph—tangible expressions of a great
nation that rightfully honors its past and yet looks forward to
the promise of a bright future.
The cherry blossoms
themselves were a lasting, living
expression of friendship between
the United States and Japan.
Japan had given some 3,000
cherry blossoms trees as a token
of esteem and friendship to the
United States. To this day, these
cherry blossom trees grace and
adorn our nation’s capitol—an
enduring legacy of friendship and solemn testimony to
triumph of the human spirit through all times and
circumstances. It is so fitting that for almost 100 years now
they ceremoniously reach their peak and flower for a briefyet
glorious--moment in Spring.
From the cherry blossom, we have a stunning and
memorable visual that captures the similitude between the
nature of the tree and the nature of man. To be sure, through
most cultures, Spring carries the promise of renewal.
Orthodox Christianity, for instance, has drawn profound
lessons from nature, and sees in Spring a new dawn, a new
beginning, the triumph of life over death, light over darkness,
and the promise of renewal and a mystical transformation.
These lessons drawn from the early Church Fathers and
incorporated (literally from the Latin sense of the word, given
body and, therefore, made alive, tangible, and real) in
Orthodox Christian ritual teach us about our Christian Faith
and the essence of human nature.
The Orthodox Christian Funeral (“the last
sacrament’), contains the most sublime hymns from Saint
John of Damascus (+749 A.D.) in which life is compared to a
flower: “Every mortal is a like a flower that withers, a passing
dream that vanishes.” Hence, we clearly see the lesson of the
evanescence of life. Life, like a flower, is fleeting. It is but a
moment, even at its most glorious and beautiful, it can vanish.
Emblematic of the fragility of life, the beauty of the cherry
blossom is ephemeral, but the transience of life can be a
source of inspiration and strength.
In Medieval Europe and Japan, among the venerable
warrior codes of the samurai and the Christian Knights, the
flower was symbolic of valor. Thus, we have the expressions
“the flower of their manhood,” and “the flower of their
chivalry,” indelibly ingrained in our memory.
Cherry Blossoms:
Emblematic of the Evanescence of Life
3
These knights admired the
flower, for, although beautiful,
wondrous, and inspiring, it did not cling
to life. For a brief, shining moment, the
flower reaches the summit of its
splendor, and just as quickly, and unceremoniously, falls at
the zenith of its glory. The noble knights and samurai took
this lesson to heart. Thus, they faced glory and shame,
success and failure, and life and death with stoic, adamantine
resolve. They were called to “flower” at the hour of greatest
need. For them, glory was in doing their duty with the
assurance they would live on in story and song, and for the
Christian Knight, this “immortality below” in human hearts,
memories, and art, would be a foretaste of the immortality
above in the Heavenly Kingdom with their Lord of Lords
and King of Kings, their Sovereign Jesus Christ.
The cherry blossoms will flower this spring just as
Japan strives to rebuild. Japan rebuilt after the vast
destruction of the fire-bombing of Tokyo and its major cities
and the nuclear devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Indeed, if you had seen pictures of the before and after of
these cities, you could not help but be impressed. Sadly, these
once bombed cities look better than some of our own inner
cities, and we were the victors. Moreover, when they rebuilt
their industrial capacity, they became the second greatest
industrial power in the world. They are an ancient and
dignified people who will bear these recent tragic events with
stoic resolve and honorable perseverance, and as in many
times throughout their history, they will endure and prevail;
for nothing created is lasting, but what endures and remains is
one’s behavior, actions, and character. What matters is not
what happens to a people. What--and forever--matters is how
they face and handle what happens to them. This ultimately
will be their story, renown, and legacy.
I have in my hands a little music box that was given
to me by a friend a long time ago. He was very well read,
travelled, educated. I always enjoyed his company, but before
we left the D.C. area, he gave me this little box with a simple
little crank handle like a Jack in the Box. It plays the most
peaceful and calming Japanese tune. The music speaks in
stoic solemnity, reminding you to carve out a space of
tranquility and serenity in spite of any venue and all
circumstances—much like the Japanese make the most
efficient and orderly use of space when they create oases and
garden retreats in the midst of the din of post-industrial cities.
The tune continues saying how you cannot control the
vicissitudes of life or the vagaries of nature, but you can
control your inner space, your thoughts, your emotions, and
your reactions. If you truly want to be free and powerful, then
you must master yourself and control yourself. If you want to
change the world, then you must first change yourself.
Enslaving yourself to fears and the reactions of others to
events that cannot be controlled is pointless and ultimately
self-destructive. However, you can learn from nature and
history and thus be informed, wiser, and more powerful. But
in the end, you must know that joy Continued on page 9

How much does it costs to run your home?
Imagine if your home was
more than 53,000 square feet
and sat on ten acres; think of
how much that would cost
each year to heat, cool and
maintain. Well, you might be
surprised to know that it costs
more than $826,000 to
maintain your spiritual home,
the Holy Trinity Cathedral.
Our spiritual home also
provides unique religious and
Greek heritage programs such
as youth dance instruction,
Greek school, Sunday school, summer bible camp, etc.
to more than 450 families, and beautiful church services
every Sunday, choir voices and chanter, and social/
coffee hour with friends and family afterwards.
Unfortunately, the Holy Trinity Cathedral, Chapel,
Educational Building, and Community Center do not
run themselves, as they say, “it takes a horio (village).”
Our church relies on each valued and dedicated
parishioner to support our community through annual
giving/stewardship. Currently, our stewardship giving
has reached just $238,500 - a quarter of the funds
needed to run our church, and our average pledge is
$750 per year.
Please consider making your pledge today.
A pledge of $1,000 per year means…
$83 per month…
Approximately $2.80 a day to maintain and support
your spiritual home.
If we all support our spiritual home, Holy Trinity, the
financial responsibility will be shared among our parish,
enabling our community to thrive. MANY thanks for
supporting your “home”.
One Spirit+One Vision
$2.75 a Day, That’s All It Takes
Yes, $2.75 a day is all it takes to memorialize
a loved one, honor a living person/s, or just
recognize your name as someone who came
forward to help make the Education and
Cultural Center a reality.
We will be mounting a plaque in the building to
recognize those who have pledged to give
$5,000 (that's $2.75 a day over a five year
period) or more, to help build this new Center
for the Glory of God.
If you have already made a lesser pledge, you
may increase it, and we will apply your past
payments towards your new goal.
Years from now, you may walk by the plaque
and say
"Yes, when they needed help, I gave."
Thanks to all who have helped make this
vision happen.
2 Timothy 4:6–7
The Center for Family Care instructs us that FAMILY
is the most essential unit of our society. It quotes St.
John Chrysostom as saying that it is not only an essential
unit but it is necessary for peace in our society.
As Orthodox Christians, ours is an awesome
responsibility to preserve the family unit through the
visible practice of living our faith in our homes and
sharing it with others.
With this in mind, we recommend two new Orthodox
books. Parents will be drawn to read these books to—
and with—their children. They are beautifully illustrated
and co-authored by Egle-Ekaterine Potamitis. She is a
convert to Orthodoxy and an iconographer. Together
with her husband, Dionysios, they were inspired to
publish Orthodox children’s books, having recognized
the need when raising their own children. Though
published in Greece, they are publishing most of their
books in seven different languages.
Book Reviews
The PRAYER BOOK is a divided into
two basic parts. In the first part are the
prayers our children should learn and
pray with the family. There are special
hymns for Feast Days which the
children can learn to chant. In the
second part, there is an historical
background given for each of the
prayers and an explanation of each special feast day.
WARRIOR SAINTS teaches us about
the lives of twelve of our warrior saints.
Saint Theodore the Recruit, St. George,
St. Constantine, and St. Menas are
among those who fought for their faith.
Each life of the saint is attractively and
meaningfully illustrated.
We in the bookstore, recommend both
these books, not only to be used by each family with
their children, but also to be given as baptismal or
birthday gifts as well as the ideal gift for a godparent to
give a godchild.
We invite you to come into the bookstore and see these
books for yourself.
Books for Lent
It is fitting at this time in the Liturgical Year to consider
books that can assist us in understanding the true
meaning of Great Lent and enrich our participation in
the Lenten services.
Two recommended books to have in your library.
Lenten Triodion
Translated from the original Greek by Mother
Mary and Bishop Kallistos Ware
Great Lent has its own liturgical book—The Lenten Triodion.
This publication provides the services for the entire Lenten
period from the Publican and the Pharisee Sunday to Pascha.
It includes an excellent introduction by Bishop Kallistos
Ware and Mother Maria on the significance of the Fast as
well as preparation for almsgiving, prayer and repentance
during Holy Lent.
Great Lent
by Alexander Schmemann
Baptism of Jesus
Lent is a spiritual journey, and its destination is Pascha, the
“Feast of Feasts.” Included is an explanation of each week
of Great Lent. This book develops the theme of each
Sunday and renders the reader an understanding of the
Lenten Journey.

is a beautiful picture of
a Medieval Japanese
Palace perched on a
s ummit . In t h e
foreground, framing
this image, are branches
and blossoms of the
cherry tree. The
blossoms are in full bloom and glory, and yet, many of their
compatriots are falling quietly, having reigned resplendent,
even if just for a short while. The transiency and fragility of
life is marvelously accompanied by splendor and glory. So
much profundity was captured in this little box made in Japan
that is easily released and shared by the simple turning of the
handle.
Thus, we see God’s finger in His nature painting
eternal lessons for our inspiration, edification, and
preparation in all circumstances. May we keep the people of
Japan in our prayers, and let us pray that we will have the
Christian faith, dignity, and steadfast endurance to face our
future challenges, trials, and difficulties that will inevitably
come our way in this great and mysterious novel of life.
The Little Lambs Weekly Play Group
is back!
The Little Lambs group warmly welcomes our new playgroup
advisor, Nikki Forman (formally known to us as
Nikki Theodoropoulos). Nikki has been an active member,
participant, and volunteer with Holy Trinity Cathedral her
entire life. By trade, Nikki is an elementary educator, and now
is willing to put all those creative and energetic teacher skills
to work by stepping up to be the advisor of our “littlest”
youth group. Nikki and her husband, Zach, have one son
and are expecting their second child this summer. We wish
Nikki tons of success with our Little Lambs!
10
Prayer of St. Basil
O Lord and Master, Jesus Christ
our God, Who are greatly patient
with our trespasses, and has led
us to the beginning of the present
hour, when You were hanging
upon the life-giving tree, You
made an entrance into Paradise
for the Good -minded Thief and
destroyed death by death. Forgive
us, Your unworthy servants, our
sins. For we have sinned and
transgressed against Your law, and we are not worthy to
lift our eyes to look up to the height of Heaven.
Whereas we have left behind the way of Your
righteousness and have followed the will of our own
hearts, but we entreat Your boundless goodness. Spare
us, O Lord, according to the multitude of Your mercy,
and save us for the sake of Your Holy Name. For we
have spent our days in vanity. Deliver us from the hand
of the one who lies against us, and forgive us our sins,
and put to death our bodily mind. Therefore, by putting
away the old man, we may live in You, our Master and
Protector. And so following Your commands, we may
attain eternal rest, wherein is the habitation of those
who rejoice; for You are truly the delight and joy of
those who love You, O Christ our God. And to You
we give praise, together with Your beginningless Father,
and Your Good and Life-Creating Spirit, now, and ever,
and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

A Unique Opportunity
for Members of Our Community Over 70½
Years Old!
President Obama has signed a tax relief act
that allows IRA owners over 70 ½ years old to
contribute up to their required minimum distribution
in 2011 directly from their IRA to the church with no
federal tax consequences.
Parishioners who make a charitable donation
from their IRA, can credit this amount toward
satisfying any required minimum distribution (RMD)
they might have from their IRA(s). This will also
lower your income, and possibly decrease the tax
you pay on your Social Security income.
Check with your tax advisor to determine if a
lower annual income may also have a positive effect
on your taxes with regard to deductions, exemptions
and tax credits. This is a wise way to make your
donations to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox
Cathedral.
