TRAINING OF YOUTHS ON CONSTRUCTION OF SOLAR DRYERS FOR<br />

DRYING VEGETABLES<br />

A s part <strong>of</strong> its efforts to<br />

enlighten <strong>farmers</strong> on safe and cost<br />

effective methods <strong>of</strong> preserv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

fruits and vegetables, WOFAN<br />

tra<strong>in</strong>ed 120 youth group members<br />

from selected communities <strong>in</strong><br />

Kano state on <strong>the</strong> construction <strong>of</strong><br />

simple solar dryers. The solar<br />

dryers are made from wood planks,<br />

z<strong>in</strong>c and wire nets.<br />

The wood planks and z<strong>in</strong>c are used<br />

to construct a frame and sur<strong>face</strong> for<br />

<strong>the</strong> fruits and vegetables to be dried<br />

on; while <strong>the</strong> wire net is used to<br />

cover <strong>the</strong> front and side open<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> wooden frame. This allows<br />

ventilation for <strong>the</strong> fruits or<br />

vegetable be<strong>in</strong>g dried and keeps<br />

out sand, flies and o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>sects<br />

from contam<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> food items<br />

while be<strong>in</strong>g dried.
