<strong>US</strong>AID PROGRAM<br />
The United States has a long history of extending a helping hand to people overseas who are struggling<br />
to make a better life, striving to live in a free and democratic country, or recovering from a disaster.<br />
This caring stands as a hallmark of the United States, and shows the world our true character as a<br />
nation.<br />
The United States <strong>Agency</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>International</strong> Development (<strong>US</strong>AID), an independent federal government<br />
agency working under the guidance of the U.S. Secretary of State, is the principal U.S. agency which<br />
extends assistance to countries that are recovering from disasters, working to escape poverty, or<br />
engaging in democratic re<strong>for</strong>ms.<br />
<strong>US</strong>AID provides <strong>for</strong>eign assistance through close partnerships with private voluntary groups, indigenous<br />
organizations, universities, American businesses, international agencies, other governments and other<br />
U.S. government agencies. <strong>US</strong>AID enjoys working relationships with more than 3,500 American<br />
companies and over 300 U.S.-based private voluntary organizations.<br />
<strong>US</strong>AID provides assistance in five regions of the world: Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, Latin America and the<br />
Caribbean, Europe and Eurasia and the Middle East.<br />
