The Greatest Illusion on Earth
TRUTH BEHIND
the Fantasy of Porn
Shelley Lubben, Th.B
Founder and President, Pink Cross Foundation
From Prostitution to Porn
The Grooming Process
Step 1: Street Prostitution
Childhood Background
Parental neglect and verbal abuse
Kicked out of home at age 18
No life skills or driver’s license
Homeless on a curb in San Fernando Valley
Recruitment
Lured in by pimp
Step 2: Escort Agency
Another prostitute recruited me
off the streets
Introduced me to madam who trained me in
“glamorous” prostitution
▪ Female Hygiene and physical attraction
▪ How to hustle money and barter for gifts
▪ How to fake sex acts
▪ How to get out of risky situations, (cops, physical
abuse, etc..)
Shelley 1986-1992
Teenage Survivor of the Sex Industry
Step 3: Strip Clubs
Worked underage at strip clubs to avoid risks
and harms of prostitution
Risks in Strip Clubs
▪ Owners forced dancers into sex acts for employment
▪ Forced to work in unsanitary work conditions to include changing
room with soiled costumes, drugs and paraphernalia, used rags with
bodily fluids, broken glass, etc..
▪ Customers propositioned sex constantly so prostitution was
inescapable
▪ Sex acts inside of club in corners and private dances
▪ Free alcohol and drugs so addiction is inevitable
▪ Fights in bars and murders
Consequences of Sex Work
Six years in strip clubs, escort agencies, and
prostitution houses resulted in:
▪ Self-hatred
▪ Suicide attempts
▪ Near death experiences with clients
▪ Alcoholism and drug abuse
▪ Raising child from a prostitution act
▪ Major mental disorders such as bulimia, substance abuse,
paranoia, major depression, PTSD and demonization
Step 4: Lured into Porn
Porn star featured danced at the strip club I
worked at and lured me in with:
$2,000 a porn movie
Porn was legal
Porn was safe since actors got STD testing every 30 days
Promises of fame, fortune and safety sounded really good to a
burned out prostitute and stripper
Unbeknownst to me porn stars receive kickbacks for bringing
“new” meat to porn producers
Unsafe high risk sex acts (DP, Anal, Gangbang)
Movies filmed in private homes on a mostly male set
Male porn directors controlled the work environment
Subjected to unsafe and hazardous work place to include
Excessive drugs and alcohol
Physical violence such as hitting, choking, hair pulling, etc..
Verbal abuse and threats by pornographers
The Promise of Porn
Pornographers promised I would be kept safe
in this “healthy” environment
Porn Industry:
Consequences
Herpes
Non-curable disease
HPV
Pregnancy loss
Early cervical cancer
Removal of half of my cervix
Hemorrhaging
Severe anemia
Uterine ablation
Hard Recovery
After eight hard years of a strong recovery from:
alcoholism and drug addiction
sexual trauma
mental illness
major physical damages
PTSD, flashbacks, nightmares
Adult Industry Medical Healthcare (AIM)
Majority of porn performers are tested at AIM (Medical Clinic with
pornographers and porn stars as Board of Directors)
Performers not required to test for HPV, HEP A, B, C or Herpes
Industry standard every 30 days to test for HIV, Gonorrhea,
Chlamydia
Tests become unreliable quickly due to multiple sex partners on
and off the sets to include prostitution
AIM Doctors offer a false sense of security
“Doctor” Sharon Mitchell founder of AIM and former porn
actress states to porn performers:
“Doctor” Sharon Mitchell:
Facts
“Doctor” Sharon Mitchell is not a medical doctor
“Herpes is always 66%...chlamydia and
gonorrhea, however, along with hepatitis, seem
to stick to everything from dildos to flat surfaces
to hands, so pardon my expression, but we are
usually up to our asses in chlamydia.”
Since 2004 Los Angeles Department of Public
Health (LAPDH) reports:
▪ 2,396 cases of Chlamydia and 1,389 cases of
Killer Porn Industry Facts
The porn industry is a reservoir of STDs:
rampant sexually transmitted diseases proven by fraudulent doctor and real medical
doctors
The porn industry is a cesspool of death:
37 premature deaths out of 1,500 people that we know of from HIV, suicide, homicide
and drugs between 2007 and 2011.
20 more died from medical causes to include lung disease, heart failure and cancer.
These are only the deaths.
11 more died from car accidents apparently due to drugs and alcohol.
That's a total of 68 porn performers in forty-eight months between 2007 and 2011 who
died prematurely from HIV, suicide, drugs, murder, accidents and medical illnesses. No
other industry has these kinds of statistics, not even the music industry which is at least
ten times bigger than the porn industry.
Average Age of Death
When the deaths of 129 porn performers over a period of roughly 20
years were analyzed it was discovered that were an unusually large
number of premature deaths from such causes as drugs, suicide,
murder, alcohol abuse, accidental death, and disease.
It was also discovered that the average life expectancy of a porn
performer is only 37.43 years whereas the average life expectancy of an
American is 78.1 years.
Why is this industry legal?
q The Porn Industry has been legal in California since 1988 and not through
legislation, but rather through a court action, People versus Freeman, which made
it legal.
q We know it to be a very large industry that grosses as much as $13 billion a year
with over 11,000 films produced annually. And, the estimated retail value of this
industry to LA County in 2002 was about $3 billion.
q There is approximately 200 production companies that are known to operate. Five
to ten of them are the largest of the producers that make about 40% of the films.
There also are five major film distributors here and more than 700 legal
custodians of record. Any production company that actually makes film must be
registered under federal law and have an individual that maintains all the records,
primarily to be sure that no person under age 18 is involved in the production of
an adult film. We estimate there is about 6,000 employed workers, about 1,200 of
these are performers. Most, 75% of the performers, are female, a smaller number
of regular male performers.
What is being done?
q Ex porn stars began testifying against the illegal and deadly practices of the porn
industry since 2008 beginning at the California State Capitol.
q California started listening. In June of 2010, after a unanimous vote by Cal/OSHA
Standards Board an advisory committee was established to hear more testimony
and learn more about the rampant STD and safety and health issues within the
industry and what needed to be done. This is a huge victory for us!
q In April of 2011, Larry Flynt’s Hustler Video company was fined $14,175 for
multiple ‘serious’ violations of Cal/OSHA labor laws. He plans to appeal. We plan
to be there.
q But there is more to be done…
