year of schooling through Student
Loans, once that fund depleted, I
decided to move back home. Since
then I’ve worked at about 5 different
part-time jobs around Kitimat/
my spare time with my loved ones.
I also love working on projects like
making dance regalia, painting,
beading, sewing, drawing. I also
enjoy baking, cooking, dancing,
singing & shopping online.
Registry Administrator for Haisla
Nation. Prior to this position I was
working part-time at the Haisla Gas
Bar & at E.S.S. I enjoy working at
HNC, I believe working here provides
me with opportunities to
learn something new every day. I
am very thankful for being given
this opportunity & most of all be of
service to the community I grew up
in.
My office door is always open so
even if it’s just to say, ‘hello,’ please
do! I’m in the office from Monday
The Kitimat Food Share Program
Food Share Program
Mission: The Kitimat Food Share Program collects perishable foods from the local
grocery stores, which would otherwise be disposed of and distributes it to those in
need. Foods include: produce, meats, bakery items, prepared entrees, eggs and
milk products. By picking up and distributing these foods, we assist with poverty issues,
feed people who are hungry and prevent good food from going to waste.
This new program, is delivered through Kitimat Community Services Society, and
seeks to assist people who may need help stretching their food budget, while supporting
independence and dignity for families.
Haisla Tourism - Summer Students
On August 30, 2012 the Haisla
Tourism Student Crew completed
their program. Haisla Tourism
would like to acknowledge Jodi
Carol Harry and Lyle Stewart for
their commitment to ensure that
Haisla Youth Paddling Program
maintains a high quality of standards.
Canada Summer Jobs is
an initiative from the Government
of Canada that provides funding
to help employers create summer
job opportunities for students. It is
designed to focus on local priorities,
while achieving tangible results
for both students and their communities.
Members of the student crew have gone back to school. Jodi Carol Harry
is attending Grade 12 at Kitimat City High and Lyle Stewart is attending
Vancouver Community College in the Culinary Arts program.
We would like to wish you all the best in your studies.
Secondary School Apprenticeship
On August 30 th , the Secondary
School Apprenticeship participants
completed the program.
We would like to acknowledge
Chad Duncan for his commitment
to the Kitamaat Village
Beautification Project. The
Secondary School Apprenticeship
(SSA) is a career program
that provides students with the
opportunity to begin an apprenticeship
while still in high school
and to earn high school credits
for doing so. It provides a
smoother transition from school to work, and a quicker route to certification in
a trade. The project is funded by the Nechako Kitamaat Development
Funds Society and Human Resources and Skills Development Canada
via the Skills and Partnership Fund.
Chad worked with other carpenters enrolled in this project. With the collaboration
of Colin Light as journeyman the project represents an opportunity for
the carpenters to enhance their skills and have their hours recognized under
the Industry Training Authority (ITA). Throughout this project he performed
different carpentry tasks and acquired on-the-job training. Chad has developed
enough interest to consider carpentry as career option.
Chad has gone back to school. He is attending the Mount Elizabeth High
School in grade 11.
We would like to wish Chad all the best in his studies.
During the last month, the participants
have resumed their
activities at the Community
Garden. It was an incredible
growing season with a lot of
sun and just enough rain. The
corn struggled a bit with the
dry weather but it’s still growing
and hopefully it reaches
maturity before the first frost.
Kitamaat Village Community Garden
GARDENING NEWS
A garden needs lot of care in
order to have results. The Haisla
Tourism Crew, Jody Harry
and Lyle Stewart, maintained
the Community Garden.
Marilyn has provided guidance
for making improvements to
the garden. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Marilyn for her hard work and
patience. The vegetables are sweet and tasty….can’t wait for potatoes. We also would
like to thank the participants from Haisla School, Leanna Brady, as well as Jody Harry and
Lyle Stewart from Haisla Tourism. Together they have succeeded in making this area a
garden.
The Community Garden Project is part of the Haisla Heritage Corridor sponsored by the
Nechako Kitimat Development Funds Society. We are currently planning for the next
season. If you have any questions or if you would like to have more information, please
contact the Haisla Nation Council - Front Desk of the Band Office (639-9361).
Haisla Marine Planning News (#12)
Aimed to change a Vision into Action
The Haisla Traditional Territory is home to some of the richest
marine environments in the world. The Haisla Nation,
who has lived in harmony with land and water since their beginning,
has relied on the marine resource for their subsistence.
Despite this rich marine ecosystem, many Haisla
members have noticed a steady decline of the resources over
the years; oolichan, chum salmon, crabs just to name few.
Habitat damage, pollution, overfishing and climate change,
are all factors that have contributed to the decline.
So far, little effort has been given to acquire a better understanding
and ultimately resolve the problems. In the spring of
2009, leaders of our community joined the other North Coast
First Nations Communities to come up with a plan that identified
important values and resources found within the Haisla
Traditional Territory and described how these resources
should be managed. Since then, the Haisla Marine Use Plan
Advisory Committee has been working hard to develop the
plan based on the integrated marine use planning principles.
The Haisla Marine Use Plan Advisory Committee is pleased
to share information on the marine planning process that the
Community is undergoing. The brochure Common Questions
About the Haisla Marine Use Plan presents basic information
on the Marine Planning Process. Please do not
hesitate to contact the Band Office (250) 639-9361 if you
would like to have more information on the Haisla Marine Use
Plan.
FROM: Social Development Office
DATE: September 5, 2012
There is a new policy in regards to the Children Out of the Parental
Home [COPH] which is: Any new COPH requests have to be referred to
the Ministry of Children and Families Extended Family Program. Therefore,
this office is getting away from funding COPH for new requests as
the program is now administered by MCFD for off-reserve and onreserve.
An example of COPH is a grandmother caring for a grandchild.
REMINDER:
Renewals and job searches have to be submitted by the 15 th of every
month.
It’s important to note: This office will only deal with clients not with
grandmothers/mothers of clients, etc.
Christmas is around the corner!
Once again Haisla Nation Council will host Christmas dinners for Haisla
Members in Vancouver, Terrace, Kitamaat and will also include
the town of Kitimat this year.
This is a work in progress, please watch for flyers regarding dates,
venues & times for all locations.
I am on the look out for Santa’s Helpers again this year….it’s a lot of
work, but at the end of the day the sparkle in our children and grandchildren’s
eyes are priceless!!
There were a lot of comments and suggestions after the Kitamaat
Dinner last year, I encourage you to be part of the planning and prepping
for this years Kitamaat Dinner.
Thank you, Sue
Getting to know
I'm Rob Buller, Kitimat's
newest Constable. I just
recently transferred from
Ontario where I am originally
from. I graduated
from Depot in 2004 and
was posted to Ontario.
I have been working
in the Drug Section in
the Greater Toronto Area
for t h e l a s t 8
years. When I decided I
wanted to move west I
was offered a few locations,
but chose Kitimat because of its small size and proximity to
hunting and fishing. I’m looking forward to meeting everyone and enjoying
my time here in Kitimat.
