2009 Celler Can Blau Mas de Can Blau
The 2009 Mas de Can Blau was tasted from a
barrel sample (no 2008 was produced). It contains
the same blend as the Can Blau cuvee and was
aged for 18 months in French oak. The oak is
ramped up here as is the enticing nose of mineral,
incense, spice box, balsamic, black and blue fruits.
It has greater depth and volume, and is a plush,
layered, opulent package. Give this promising effort
2-3 years to fill out and drink it through 2024.
2009 Bodegas Atalaya Alaya
The 2009 Alaya is 100% Garnacha Tintorera
sourced from 50-year-old vines and aged for 15
months in new French and American oak. Earth,
underbrush, and mineral notes along with brooding
black fruits inform this wine’s inviting bouquet.
Dense and layered, the wine pulls back just short
of going over the top. Its 15.5% alcohol is in
balance with the wine’s strapping personality and
helps provide for a silky texture and a finish with
no hard edges. Give this unique effort 1-2 years to
come together and drink it over the next 6-8.
Bodegas Atalaya was founded in 2007 by the Gil
family of Jumilla. The prominent grape variety in
Almansa is Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouschet)
along with Monastrell.
and pepper. Dense, savory, and rich, this round
succulent offering lacks only complexity, but for $9
a full bottle, gimme a break! On top of everything, it
is surprisingly light on its feet.
Bodegas Atalaya was founded in 2007 by the Gil
family of Jumilla. The prominent grape variety in
Almansa is Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouschet)
along with Monastrell.
2008 Bodegas El Nido Clio
The 2008 Clio is made up of 70% old vine
Monastrell sourced from a vineyard planted in 1944
and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon from a vineyard
planted in 1979. The alcoholic fermentation is in
oak followed by malolactic fermentation in new
barrels and aging for 24 months in new French
and American oak. A glass-coating opaque purple
color, it exhibits an expressive nose of pain
grille, underbrush, brier, mineral, blueberry, and
blackberry fruit leading to a plush, opulent wine with
great density, savory flavors, and a lengthy finish.
In spite of its size, it is surprisingly light on its feet
and can be approached now. However, it will evolve
for 3-4 years and offer prime drinking from 2014 to
2023.
Bodegas El Nido is a project of the Gil family of
Jumilla with the winemaking overseen by the
Drinks: 2014-2023
The 2008 Clio is made up of 70% old vine
Monastrell sourced from a vineyard planted in 1944
and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon from a vineyard
planted in 1979. The alcoholic fermentation is in
oak followed by malolactic fermentation in new
barrels and aging for 24 months in new French
and American oak. A glass-coating opaque purple
color, it exhibits an expressive nose of pain
grille, underbrush, brier, mineral, blueberry, and
blackberry fruit leading to a plush, opulent wine with
great density, savory flavors, and a lengthy finish.
In spite of its size, it is surprisingly light on its feet
and can be approached now. However, it will evolve
for 3-4 years and offer prime drinking from 2014 to
2023.
2008 Bodegas El Nido El Nido
The 2008 El Nido is a blend of 70% Cabernet
Sauvignon and 30% Monastrell also aged for 24
months in new French and American oak. It gives
up a bit more aromatic complexity with ramped up
concentration and volume. In the glass, notes of
blueberry, blackberry, exotic spices, and pepper
lead to a plush, silky, 60-second finish. Give this
behemoth 6-8 years to become civilized and drink
the Clio cuvee while you are waiting.
Calatayud spent a brief 2 months in French oak.
Aromas of sage, thyme, and black cherry lead to
a plush, succulent wine with layers of spicy fruit.
All that is missing is complexity, but for $9 who’s
complaining?
