20 Charles Euphrasie Kuwasseg 1838 - 1904 Sunlit Port, Italy Signed and Dated 1868 Canvas 22 x 39 1 /4 ins / 55.8 x 99.7 cms Born in Draveil, Charles Euphrasie Kuwasseg was the son of Austrian painter Karl Joseph Kuwasseg. Initially he trained and worked with his father but after a while he became a sailor and travelled the world. On his return to France in 1883, he began his formal artistic training and studied under Durand-Brager and d’Isabey. Kuwasseg specialised in painting landscapes of the Breton and Normandy coast, seascapes of the North Sea and scenes in Italy. He collaborated with the artist Poilpot on a series of different landscapes. Kuwasseg exhibited at the Salons des Artistes Français from early on in his career and won a 3rd class medal in 1892 and he eventually became a professor of art. Kuwasseg’s delicate yet confident style was highly valued during his lifetime and he was regarded by his contemporaries as one of the finest artists of this genre. His paintings can be found in the museums of Montreal, Pontoise, Rouen, Perigueux, Digne and La Rochelle.
21 Delphin Enjolras 1857 - 1945 La Belle Fleur Signed Pastel on Canvas 20 1 /2 x 28 1 /2 ins / 52.1 x 72.4 cms Delphin Enjolras was born in 1857 at Courcouron in the Ardèche. He had a formal artistic training studying under the celebrated teacher Gérome at the Beaux-Arts, and Dagnan- Bouveret. He painted some fine landscapes, in particular those hanging in the Musée du Puy, and the Musée Calvet d'Avignon. However the majority of Enjolras' oil paintings and pastels depict young ladies illuminated by lamplight. His subjects are often engaged in simple domestic pursuits such as reading, sewing or flower arranging, although at times he sought a more intimate portrayal. Enjolras exhibited at the Société des Artistes Français, of which he became a member in 1901, and at the Paris Salon from 1890. His work is represented in the Musée du Puy and Musée d’Avignon.
