Critical Messages: Contemporary Northwest
Artists on the Environment
WESTERN GALLERY, WESTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY, BELLINGHAM, WA – Apr 12-May 29, 2010
Critical Messages is a group exhibit featuring 26 artists whose work responds to environmental impacts
on the Northwest. The natural environment is a large part of the region's aesthetic beauty as well as its
resources. The dichotomy between awe-inspiring landscapes and the industrialization and population
of the region raises awareness for many artists. The
exhibit highlights work by artists from British Columbia,
Washington, Oregon, California and Idaho.
The range of approaches, media, points of view and
results is quite varied and provides many perspectives
from which to reflect. Curator Sarah Clark-Langager
categorizes the major themes and underlying issues:
mass production and consumption, waste management,
preservation and sustainability, climate change,
how sources of energy are changing the ecosystem,
growth management and the dual-sided urban/rural
conflict. Jana Demartini depicts an iconic bulldozer set
against organic patterns, evoking the feeling of harsh
machinery employed to break ground on new suburban
developments that reduce open space and farm-
land. Both Margaretha Bootsma and Steve Davis utilize
imagery of colossal industrial plants to address pollution
and decay. Chris Jordan’s photographs showing
statistical quantities of discarded water bottles raise
consciousness about American cultural habits.
