Sharon Langford is
Living with the Rescues
“It’s been my experience that we see the best and worst of humanity in how we
treat animals,” says Sharon Langford in the preface of the newly released book,
Living with the Rescues. “I believe many people would be willing to help once
they realize just how much they are needed.”
Sharon grew up on a farm where she was the oldest of five children. She worked
alongside her father out in the field driving the tractor.
She operated the farm equipment just like any of the
LOOKING FORWARD TO
THE DAILY TREATS
Sandy and Rusty love roaming
in the fenced back yard area that
Sharon (left) has for them.
fella’s on the farm. She’s always been an animal lover,
and pretty much remembers always having a dog.
After graduating White County High School, Sharon
went off to college and pursued many interests. After
graduating college, she went to work in Huntsville, Alabama
working in research for space projects. She later
moved to Kentucky where she did social work. In Dallas,
Sharon became the first female drug rep in the Southeast
for a major pharmaceutical firm. She made her way to
Nashville where she taught at TSU for several years and
was Assistant Dean of Business School and in 1985, she
resigned to begin her real estate career. By 1992, she
had opened her own real estate company in Green Hills.
In 1999, Bob Parks bought the company and Sharon
eventually served as CEO of the company. Today,
Sharon has moved back to Sparta. She took her time in
building a house on the farm where she grew up. “This
farm has always seemed like home to me. We lived here
when we moved to White County, but I actually lived in
the house on the farm where mother and daddy lived for
the longest period of time,” she said. Her home was de-

signed to accommodate her rescue dogs. Sharon has a real heartbeat for homeless
animals.
Daisy was adopted in 1970 by Sharon after she made a visit to the Nashville Humane
Association. Daisy was Sharon’s first ‘rescue dog’. Sharon was very fond
of the mostly black dog with long hair. Daisy traveled with Sharon just about everywhere
and was easy to be with. During times when Sharon was experiencing
crisis, Daisy was there to brighten her day. Daisy seemed to be in Sharon’s life
through some pretty rough times. “I adopted Daisy to save her life,” Sharon
writes in the book. “In going through the darkest days of my life, particularly after
my brother Ray died, she saved mine. Daisy had a profound impact on my life.”
Daisy was with Sharon for 14 years.
By the time Sharon began to pen the book, she had eight rescue dogs living with
her. Living with the Rescues, Life Lessons and Inspirations, is a book filled with
16 stories Sharon has written that demonstrates her passion for the rescue and care
for homeless and injured dogs. The stories are her true experiences with the dogs
and each story ends with something that she learned from the animal that is an inspiration.
“I want to get more people involved in helping animals. There are a lot
of people who want to help and don’t know what to do,” Sharon said. Along with
the stories of the rescue dogs Sharon has seen, there are a lot of rescue tips that can
be found in the book.
Proceeds that she receives from the book will go to Daisy’s Legacy. This is a
charitable trust that will benefit those who will take on the challenge of living with
a rescue dog. The hope is to offer scholarships to people will give these dogs a
good home that may not be able to afford the initial care the dog must have before
being adopted. “In addition to scholarships for people who would provide
good homes with some financial assistance, I will focus on spay
neuter. It will probably be 2 years before Daisy’s Legacy has funds,
but I am partnering with some area animal organizations and businesses
selling the book to provide help now,” Sharon explained.
There are many ways you can help in the rescuing of an animal. You
may not be in a situation that offers a home for a dog, but there are
other things you can participate in to help. Sharon provides all kinds
of tips in the book of ways you can help. You can also help by simply
purchasing the book penned by someone who grew up right here in
Sparta.
To get your copy of Sharon’s book, you may find one at Dog & Co.
on Bockman Way in Sparta or visit Sparta Veterinary Services at
1070 Gum Spring Mountain Road in Sparta. You may also order one
Bubba Johnson, his son Dustin, and Roy Maxwell make up the group
“Yielding Vessels”.
Yielding Vessels
On the Move
Brad Paisley is getting ready to record a song that Sparta resident, Roy Maxwell,
has written. “Heaven’s Playground” is a song about a 7-year-old boy, Jamie
Knight, who lost his fight with cancer. The young boy was the son of a friend of
Roy’s who lived in East Tennessee. After being inspired by a photo of him on
the wall, Roy was inspired. “I got caught up in the moment and wrote that song
in about fifteen minutes,” Roy said. Roy’s been writing songs since the early
1970’s.
Roy has been involved in music all of his life, at least as
long as he was big enough to hold his mother’s guitar.
His brothers would be outside doing what kids do while
Roy sat at his mother’s feet watching her while she
strummed.
Roy was at the Dollar Store one day last year when he
met Larry Johnson. Folks here in Sparta know Larry as
“Bubba”. Bubba is a White County bus driver who once
was a member of the “Bus Garage Band”. He’s been involved
in music most all his life. Today, the two men,
along with Bubba’s son, Dustin, make up the group
called “Yielding Vessels”. Dustin is a Freshman at White
County High School where he plays the saxophone for
the band. He also is experienced in playing the bass, lead
guitar, and dobra.
“Yielded Vessels” has just released a new CD. The CD,
“On the Move”, is a Southern Gospel album that includes

A Yankee in the South
Drivin’
By Dianne Smith
I’m getting ready for a trip North. We’re going to
visit family and friends in several states. I’m very
excited about the trip, especially since we’re traveling
the back roads part of the way, and I won’t have
to deal with too many of the big-rig truckers… and
all those idiot drivers. You know them…those other
people who can’t or don’t drive nearly as well as
YOU do?
I get tickled when I hear Sparta folk talking about
having to drive to Cookeville (“going into the city”)
for one reason or another. It’s “such a chore to make
that drive, and then what about all that traffic and
those drivers”!?
I’ve lived in Chicago and Houston, so I know about
city driving, and bad drivers. And Cookeville drivers,
in the great scheme of things, aren’t that bad,
y’all. Trust me on this.
Other than a tendency to drive too slowly (and that is
from a Northern perspective), the biggest problem
around here seems to be the lack of using turn signals.
It’s so bad my husband remarked that he’s going
to call the Detroit carmakers and tell them not to
bother installing the turn signal mechanism in cars
that will be sold in Tennessee; nobody uses them!
A fun driving “thing” people in White County do is
the finger wave with your pointer finger. It’s just a
friendly thing to do. It doesn’t mean anything except
“hey”. There’s no action needed on your part except
to finger-wave back if you want to. How easy is that,
and don’t you just feel good, like you’re part of the
in-crowd who knows what to do when the fingerwave
comes your way?
I’ll leave you with the nicest thing I saw the other
day, and it was a first for me, ever. A funeral procession
went by my house on Sunday. All the traffic
going the opposite way of the procession pulled off to
the side of the road, and let the mourners’ cars pass.
Then the pulled-over vehicles went on their way.
Those drivers pulled over so quietly, and without any
fanfare; it was just the right thing to do. What a nice
sign of respect. You wouldn’t see that up North; everybody
is in too big a hurry – we want that procession
to hurry up and get out of the way.
Some days, it’s just so satisfying to be living in Middle
Tennessee, in White County, in the United States
of America.
ten songs that Roy has written, including “Heaven’s Playground” that is dedicated
in the memory of Jamie Knight. Two other Southern Gospel favorites are also
recorded on the album. “This has been a very good project,” said Bubba. “We are
proud of it and everyone did good.”
“I like songs that have a lot of meaning,” Bubba continued as he explained that the
album includes two military songs meant to be inspiring. “If the songs have a lot
of meaning, we can take the music and help other people with it.”
Roy agrees, “We are out here and we want to uplift people and try to make them
IT WAS ABOUT 1920 when Mitchell Brothers was in operation. It was located where The Natural Answer is located
today. According to the sign in front of the car on the left, there was a hat sale going on where one could get a good
hat for a buck. They sold dry goods, clothing, hats and shoes. Notice the ladies clothing in the window on the right.
In the far right of the photo is the old brownstone jail.
The upstairs of the building served as a funeral parlor.
Mitchell Brothers: In the back is Waymon, Hertial, and Obe.
Seated in the front is Barnett and William. The store in the photo
above was operated by Waymon, Hertial and probably William.
These brothers had many business ventures together, including
partnering in the ownership of the Keystone Hotel that was located
on South Main Street just about where the parking lot of the
American Legion Building is. Next to the Keystone Hotel sat
another business that the brothers, except Barnett, shared: a factory,
4 Brothers Overalls. The factory was in operation in the mid ’20’s
and made overalls and coveralls for Sears & Roebuck.
The factory burnt down and was never rebuilt.
Most of what you will read here is about the sons of Hertial and
Mattie Mitchell. He is the man in the center of the photo on the
left. They had four boys and a daughter: Herman, Arthur,
Eugene, Abbie, Herbert and Inez.
Gary Mitchell is the son of Herbert and shares some interesting
points of the lives of some of Sparta’s businessmen. Hertial
Mitchell was part owner of a dry goods store where Sparta Hardware
used to be, so his sons grew up probably understanding the
business world. The Mitchell’s were well involved in the town
of Sparta. We will begin with Herbert Mitchell, who once owned
a rolling store. He also once owned Mitchell’s Friendly Cornerstore,
a grocery where Woodmen of the World is today.
“Dad sold that ground to the Co-op,” explained Gary Mitchell as
he was telling about how the house he is living in was moved to
it’s current location on the Sullivan Knowles Road. Gary’s
grandparents, (his mother’s parents) Will and Parella Broyles, had
built the house in 1948 and it sat on the land where the White
County Farmer’s Co-op is today. The Co-op had been located in
town where a white building sits today just before you get to the
YMCA. It was on the right side on the corner. Before relocating the
store, the Farmer’s Co-op had built a warehouse just behind the
Broyles’ home.
Gary’s grandmother had passed away only six months after his
grandparents had moved into the new house. His grandfather had
asked Gary’s parents to move in with him. When Mr. Broyles re-
married, Gary’s father bought the property. He made a good profit when he sold the land to the Co-op. After searching around for a new house
to move his family into, Mr. Mitchell just couldn’t seem to find the right one. He did, however, find 11 acres on the Sullivan Knowles Road.
So, in 1969, Mr. Mitchell moved the house to it’s current location. Gary remembers the event. “When they moved the house, a crowd gathered
to see it. The brakes had went out right on a hill so they coasted down to the bottom and the house rocked a lot, everybody was watching to see
what would happen. They had to move it through the fields and fences,” he said.

Herbert Mitchell
Herbert’s brother, Arthur Mitchell, had a factory outlet store located on Rhea
Street. Arthur served in World War II in a tank division in the Army. He
served in Germany. He’d been shot off a tank and left in a ditch to die, and the
next day was heard moaning and was sent to a hospital, where he recoverd for
over a year.
The Factory Outlet Store was a dry goods store where the basement was never
used. Herbert went to work with Arthur. It was decided then that they would fill the basement with piece goods
and it was Ms. Goldie Dycus who ran that department.
“They made stairs going to the basement,” said Gary. “George McBride owned a
store that faced the Square. My uncle bought that store and they knocked a hole
in the wall from their basement and it went right into George McBride’s store,”
explained Gary. “They made a big shoe store and it was right directly across the
street from the amphitheater. After that, the store went from street to street.
Bockman Way faced the front and Rhea Street on the back. It became a general
store and they stocked everything in the world. They kept the radio station hot
with advertising that said, ‘the store with a hole in the floor’, where they had cut
out for the stairs.” The Factory Outlet Store was like a forerunner to Wal-mart. It sold men’s clothes, even Stetson
hats and all types of ready-to-wear. They had Osh Kosh overalls and were known to always have on hand
size 6 months to 56 because Herbert made sure of it. The store had things like lawnmowers and tillers and they
even carried a full line of paint.
In November, 1968, all the Christmas merchandise was packed and in the isles ready to be put out for display.
“The place caught on fire and burnt just about everything out,” remembers Gary. “But, a bunch of us got in
there digging’ through and finding what we could that somebody might want and took everything up to the store
This photo was taken
when Abbie Mitchell
served as Sheriff of White
County, at the back of the
old brownstone jail (far
right) that was located on
Church Street. The man
facing the camera on the
left with a pick is Hertial
Mitchell, Abbie’s father,
who served as a jailer. The
man on the far right is
building next to where Jack Franklin’s office is. We filled it with that fire stuff and everybody in the family was washin’ stuff. It was opened
that first day and it was a $25,000 day. It took about three months to redo the building. It came back a lot better than it ever was until about
1978 till it was sold out.”
Herbert had another brother who was served as the youngest Sheriff of White County. He was George Douglas and everyone knew him as
“Abbie”. He was 21 years old when he was elected. He was very interested in the political world and was State Representative in 1958. He
was close friends with Senator Estes Kefauver. He had an office in what was known as the Memorial Building, The American Legion Building
today. He died at the age of 49 of a heart attack.

Crop Coverage
Deadlines Approaching
The final date for insuring wheat is as follows: wheat forage and wheat grazing,
October 13, wheat grain, September 30.
Having your crops insured either by Federal Crop Insurance or through NAP, the
Non-Insured Crop Disaster Assistance Program is necessary to remain eligible for
various USDA programs, including linkage, SURE, NAP, and etc.
The Non-Insured Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP) was designed to reduce
financial losses that occur when natural disasters cause a catastrophic loss of
production or prevented planting of an eligible crop by providing coverage equivalent
to catastrophic (CAT) insurance.
In order to be eligible for disaster assistance programs, like SURE (the new Supplemental
Agricultural Disaster Assistance Program) and etc., producers are required
to timely purchase, at a minimum, CAT coverage for all insurable crops
through Federal Crop Insurance and/or NAP coverage for all non-insurable crops
on their entire farm through the Farm Service Agency.
NAP coverage for 2011 costs $250 per crop, but not more than $750 per producer
per county, or not more than $2250 total per producer for all counties.
Producers who already have coverage on 2010 NAP crops may choose to continue
coverage on the same crop or crops for 2011, if the applicable service
fee is submitted by the application closing date. A new CCC-
471, application for coverage is not required to be signed when applying
for continuous coverage of the same crop or crops.
If you are growing insurable crops, please check with your local
Federal Crop Insurance Agent about coverage for these crops. If you
are growing non-insurable crops, check with the White-Van Buren-
Putnam Counties Farm Service Agency at 749 Miller’s Point Road,
Sparta, TN, or 931-738-7822, ext.2 , about coverage for your noninsurable
crops through NAP.
Friends and family gathered on the eve of what would have been James Cloyd’s
170th birthday to honor his Confederate military service by placing a Cross of
Honor grave marker at his grave.
The memorial and dedication service was held on September 11, 2010 at Old Zion
Cemetery in White County. Members of Captain Sally Tompkins 2123, United
Daughters of the Confederacy and Sgt. William A. Hamby Sons of Confederate
Veterans Camp 1750 were present to participate in the service.
James Madison Cloyd served in the War Between the States as a Private in Company
E of the 25th Tennessee Infantry Confederate States of America. Private
Cloyd enlisted in July, 1861 and served with his company throughout the war. The
25th TN Infantry was involved in a number of battles during the war, including the
Battle of Murfreesboro, the Battle of Drewery’s Bluff and the defense of Petersburg
toward the end of the war. Private Cloyd was wounded once and captured twice
during his service. His first time as a POW was after the Battle of Murfreesboro in
January, 1863. His second capture was in the trenches defending Petersburg in
April, 1865. Private Cloyd ended the war as a POW at Fort Delaware Prison Camp.
Upon his release, he returned to his home in White County, where he lived until his
death in 1930. He was awarded a Confederate Pension for his service in the war
beginning in the early 1900’s.
Members of Captain Sally Tompkins 2123 UDC placed a wreath and unveiled the
Cross of Honor during the dedication service. The Caney Fork Mess, Company A,
28th Tennessee Volunteers Sons of Confederate Veterans Honor Guard fired three
volleys. The service concluded with refreshments.
The Cross of Honor grave marker is a replica of the medals given to Confederate
veterans and officers who served honorably. The Cross of Honor is appropriate for
the grave of any Confederate soldier who had honorable service.
