From Your President Lewis May...
It is July in Arkansas, the grass is growing and the rough on the golf course is just
about impossible. That is what I hear from many golfers right before they say,
“the course is in the best shape I have ever seen it”. As members of Pleasant Valley
Country Club, we all need to express the pride we have in the best club course in the
state. Please help maintain the course by filling divots, repairing ball marks, raking
traps and properly disposing of trash and cigarette butts.
I hope you were at the Club on the 4 th of July. We had the most extraordinary thirty
five minute fireworks display and patriotic music ever. The food was great and the
cool summer breeze made the night a special event.
This weekend is the Men’s Senior Club Championship, followed next weekend
with the “Superintendents Revenge” tournament. Don Armbrust, our golf course
superintendent, promises to set up the course to be as challenging (impossible) as he
can. It should be a lot of fun to compare scores vs. handicaps afterwards.
Compliments on the quality of the food and the service are frequent. Members of other clubs have made many remarks to me about
the superior experience they receive at Pleasant Valley over their home club. As a summertime reminder, remember our dress code:
“The downstairs clubhouse areas are a more relaxed setting with appropriate golf and tennis attire being the norm. Neat
denim (no holes, cutoffs, frayed hems, etc.) is acceptable. This applies to the Mixed Foursome, Ladies’ and Men’s Locker
Rooms, Men’s Grill and the Golf Shop. The upstairs clubhouse will be slightly more formal. During the week, shorts would
be permitted in the Lounge and informal dining areas. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, slacks for gentlemen, and skirts,
pants or dresses for ladies would be appropriate; also dress denim would be allowed in these areas. No tattered, frayed or
destroyed denim would be allowed. In the Formal Dining Room, attire would always be slacks, golf shirt or dress shirt with
jacket required for gentlemen; tie optional. Ladies’ attire would be appropriate cocktail attire. Gentlemen must remove hats
upon entering the clubhouse area. *Dress code can be altered for special club functions or the theme for which the room is
rented by an outside party.”
We are expecting the new tennis pro to be on board by the end of the week. Look for the announcement, as well as a “get to
meet the pro” event which will be scheduled.
Look forward to seeing you at the Club.
Sincerely,
Lewis May
Membership News
by Theresa Harrell
As your Membership Director, I am proud to report successful results from the Special Membership drive during
this year. Tremendous efforts from the Membership Committee, our willing courteous staff, and you the members
have all taken a very active role in acquiring new families to join PVCC.
The Membership Committee is chaired by Richard Poole. He donates countless hours for the betterment of Pleasant
Valley, a true Ambassador for the Club. The remaining committee members are Carolyn Lay, Jane Rosen, Louise
Newcomb, Bob Birch, Ken Griffey and Gary Parrish. We meet at 10:00 a.m. on the Wednesday of the week of the
Board of Governors meeting. Please feel free to contact any one of the members with comments or suggestions.
Approximately 30 new members have joined PVCC this year during our Special Membership drive. Only 10
memberships are available at the reduced fee of $14,000.00. When the goal of 40 new members is reached the initial
fee will increase to $16,000.00. Remember when you see that neighbor or friend, if they join you receive 1⁄2 of their
dues reduction on your monthly statement for 12 months. Bring in two new memberships and you double your
reduction – OR, you could give the benefit to the new member. This may allow them to enjoy the excitement at PVCC
much sooner than they expected.
Satisfaction from a job or position often comes from benefiting others. Recently I saw a new member in the parking
area. She rolled down the window of her car and said, “Theresa, we love PV – we have been at the pool everyday!!”
To me, that is what it is all about – making memories with the ones you love!!!!!!
When you see a new face, maybe it is one of our new families – go over, say hello and make them feel glad to be at
their NEW CLUB.
The 2010 Four-Ball
was a great success.
Hats off to Don Armbrust
and his staff for having
the course in excellent
condition. I also want to
thank all of the clubhouse
staff for the great job
they did with the food & beverage presentation for the
tournament. The field for this year’s event was once again
one of the largest fields in the history of the event. It seems
as though the event gets bigger and better every year. This
year the tournament filled up in eight days. Please keep this
in mind next year when the entry is mailed out to you in
March. Congratulations to Joey Nichols and Matt Watts on
winning the 2010 Four Ball.
Club Championships
July will kick off our Club Championship run starting with our
Senior Club Championship held July10-11. This event is
for men 55years of age and older, and will be a 36 hole stroke
play event. The Championship Flight will play from the blue
tees and members must declare if they wish to compete in the
Championship Flight. The Ladies’ Club Championship and
Ladies’ Senior Club Championship will be held August 24-
25, for all lady members. Must be 55 and older to be eligible
for Ladies’ Senior Club Championship. This will also be a
36 hole stroke play event. The Men’s Club Championship
will be August 20 - 22. We will have a 1:00 shotgun on Friday,
August 20th for all first round matches. Second round matches
will be conducted by tee times on Saturday, with finals taking
place on Sunday with tee times as well. Qualifying for the
Championship Flight will be done a little differently this
year. Rather than Qualifying on any day a week before the
tournament, we will have three days in which members may
try to qualify: Saturday, August 14th , Sunday, August 15th and
Thursday, August 19th . Please keep in mind that if you want to
qualify for the Championship Flight, you must qualify on one
of these three days, and you must play with someone else who
is qualifying. The golf shop will hold a block of times on these
two days for qualifying purposes. Please mark your calendars
accordingly to participate in these events. We look forward to a
great turnout for a successful Club Championship schedule.
Wednesday Night Men’s Event
During the month of July we are going to host a Wednesday
night men’s event on the 14th , 21st , & 28th of the month.
The shotgun will start at 5:30 with the formats of play varying
each week. Members will have until 5:00 on that Wednesday to
sign up and cost will be only $10.00 per person. This is a great
way to enjoy your club and meet new people.
The following is a list of results from each flight in
the 2010 Four-Ball Tournament. We hope that
everyone had a great time and look forward to seeing you
again next year.
On The Course
by Don Armbrust
It is my pleasure to introduce Matthew “Adam” Gates as the new Second Assistant
Golf Course Superintendent at Pleasant Valley Country Club. Adam was born in
Warren, Arkansas and raised in Pine Bluff. He
started at the beginning of July, after recently
graduating from the University of Arkansas
at Fayetteville with a degree in Turfgrass
Management. The experience he gained while working at several courses in
Arkansas was highlighted by his internship at Quail Hollow Country Club
in Charlotte, NC, host of a predominate PGA tour event. He was also a
member of the sports maintenance team working the athletic fields for the
Adam Gates
Razorbacks.
Superintendent’s
Revenge!
The Superintendent’s
Revenge will be
held Saturday, July
17th. This will be a one
day event. Members
should make their own
tee times beginning
Thursday, July 15th. Tee
times begin at 8:30 a.m.
Saturday morning.
This will be a Two-Man Best Ball event with Gross and
Net scoring. A member can have multiple partners, as
long as they all play in the same group (max 3). You will
have to tackle some crazy challenges including tricky
pin placements, long tees and other surprises throughout
the course. He will set up the golf course as difficult as
possible and challenge participants to shoot the best score
possible under these circumstances.
Expect the Unexpected!
Only $40.00 per team.
Call the Golf Shop at 225-2234 to sign up for this event.
Junior Golf
Summer has begun and vacations and
summer camps are being planned as
we speak. Don’t forget to mark the junior
you are planning your busy summer. The
summer junior golf program is here with
one more junior camp remaining. The
last Junior Camp will be held July 13-16
Club members. Please call the golf shop
if you are interested in signing your child
Club Championship is on August 4th & 5th ,
and last but not least, don’t forget about our
Parent-Child and the Junior Golf Banquet
on Sunday, August 15th . We hope you have
a great summer, and we look forward to
seeing you at the course.
Junior Dress Code: Please keep in mind
that all juniors, regardless of age, are required to follow
the same dress code policy as adults. Shirts must have
collars and always be TUCKED IN. Even if the junior
is just going to the practice facility, the same dress code
policy will apply. Please help us enforce this policy.
• All play must start on either hole #1,10 or 19. Please check in at the golf shop prior to playing.
• Please help keep our course clean by placing all trash in its proper place. Keep in mind cigarette butts are
considered trash.
• We are getting to that time of year where the greens are a little softer than normal. It is very important that we repair all
ball marks. Please repair your ball mark and one other.

The Summer Heat is Here!!
Since summer is officially
here and it has slapped us
in the face with 100 degree
temperatures right away. I
think everyone needs to be
aware of heat illnesses and what
to do about them. Please be careful playing golf, tennis
or exercising outdoors. With these temperatures and high
humidity everybody needs to be very cautious. Drink
plenty of fluids while you are outdoors and rehydrate
before and after activity to prevent dehydration.
Heat Exhaustion
Heat exhaustion is one of the heat-related syndromes, which range in severity from mild heat cramps to exhaustion to
potentially life-threatening heat stroke. Causes of heat exhaustion include exposure to high temperatures, particularly when
combined with high humidity, and strenuous physical activity. Without prompt treatment, heat exhaustion can progress to heat
stroke, a life-threatening condition. Fortunately, heat exhaustion is preventable. Signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion often
begin suddenly, sometimes after excessive exercise, heavy perspiration, and inadequate fluid or salt intake.
Signs and symptoms resemble those of shock and may include:
• Feeling faint or dizzy
• Nausea
• Heavy sweating
• Rapid, weak heartbeat
• Low blood pressure
• Cool, moist, pale skin
• Low-grade fever
• Heat cramps
• Headache
• Fatigue
• Dark-colored urine
If you suspect heat exhaustion:
• Get the person out of the sun and into a shady or air-conditioned location.
• Lay the person down and elevate the legs and feet slightly.
• Loosen or remove the person’s clothing.
• Have the person drink cool water or other non-alcoholic beverage without caffeine.
• Cool the person by spraying or sponging him or her with cool water and fanning.
• Monitor the person carefully. Heat exhaustion can quickly become heat stroke.
• If fever greater than 102 degrees, fainting, confusion or seizures occur, call 911 or emergency medical help.
Heat Stroke
Heat stroke is the most severe of the heat-related problems, often resulting from
exercise or heavy work in hot environments combined with inadequate fluid intake.
Young children, older adults, people who are obese and people born with an impaired
ability to sweat are at high risk of heat stroke. Other risk factors include dehydration,
alcohol use, cardiovascular disease and certain medications. What makes heat stroke
severe and potentially life-threatening is that the body’s normal mechanisms for
dealing with heat stress, such as sweating and temperature control, are inadequate. The
main sign of heat stroke is a markedly elevated body temperature – generally greater
than 104 degrees – with changes in mental status ranging from personality changes to
confusion and coma. Skin may be hot and dry – although if heat stroke is caused by
exertion the skin may be moist.
