A little of Everything at the 3 rd Annual Open House
Our third Annual Open House was held on Sunday, October
18 th , 2009. This year’s Open House included fun, prize
drawings, a live radio broadcast, adoption applications, our
new trainer, and even surprise guests!
Live Radio Broadcast
A live radio broadcast hosted by Lori Jones of Kickin’
Country brought many visitors who had not heard of
Southside SPCA. The weather kept attendance lower than
expected, but many of our best supporters braved the 50
degree breeze and the rain stayed off in the distance. Our
thanks to Lori, her husband, and volunteer! We hope to have
gained many friends and supporters thanks to the airtime.
Raffle prizes
Our Raffle had over 35 items this year! The biggest item
was the 6’ kitty tree donated by PETSMART. Most popular
was the doggie lounge chair donated by Pam Wilms - everyone
wanted it! Other pet items came from Dr. Edda Eliasson
of Village Vet Services on Court Street in Amelia, The Dog
and Cat Shoppe on Hull Street in Richmond, and a certificate
for a 1 week’s stay at Three Oaks Pet Resort in Farmville.
Visitors check out
the raffle items the raffle
Cat Tree-Thanks PETMART for the
Cat Tree! Thanks Leigh Grady & staff
for buying most of the raffle tickets and
donating the tree back-the cats love it!
It wasn’t all about the animals: River City Beads donated a
beautiful necklace, and other Richmond area businesses like
Home Depot, Quizno’s, Arby‘s, Joe‘s Inn, Whitten Mazda,
and Sheehy Ford contributed to our raffle’s success.
Tail Wagger’s Stand
Dave and Carol Conrad hosted a stand for Tail Wagger’s,
our Thrift Store in Keysville. Toys, Halloween Costumes,
collars, leads, and other pet items were offered at thrift store
prices.
Sandy Wyatt and Leigh Grady on Air with Lori Jones,
talking about our Homebound Hounds Program
Training Demonstrations
Trainer Katie Locks of Lucky Dog Training & More, the
cornerstone of our new A.D.O.P.T program, and dog
Agility competitor Jillian Chilson (related articles on
pages 2 & 3) showed off the training methods embraced
to transform an abused, neglected dog into a confident
and well-trained pet.
Surprise Visitors
Leigh Grady of Sterling Animal Shelter in Sterling, MA,
and Sterling Staff members Tiffany and Marissa surprised
our Shelter Director Sandy Wyatt with their first ever
meeting. Together, Sandy and Leigh have rescued and
found homes for over 15,000 unwanted and abandoned
puppies from rural Southside Virginia through our
Homebound Hounds Program, starting in 2001.
Thank You from Southside SPCA
If you visited our Open House, Thank you for coming!
If you couldn’t make the Open House, we’re sorry we
missed you! Your support of our shelter keeps our doors
open, and our Open House is held to thank you in person.
Thank you for your continued support of our shelter and
its mission of compassion for homeless animals in
Audacity, January 2009
Audacity’s Unexpected Road to Hope
Audacity (aka “T”) came to Southside SPCA in late 2008 due to an animal cruelty
seizure. Prince Edward Animal Control officers rescued two puppies, both of
whom were about 6 months old and both about 40% underweight. Both pups
found homes and T was one of them.
When Jillian Chilson met the scruffy, wiggly boy at the 2008 Open House, she
knew that he would be difficult to place - high-energy and intelligent Australian
Shepherds must have a job. Despite his past neglect, the pup had an amazing
loving spirit and she fell for his charm.
Jillian's previous experience with Australian Shepherds was instrumental in
helping T feel safe and secure. Learning how to interact appropriately with people
and other dogs have allowed T's sweetness to shine through to everyone he meets.
However, Jillian's knowledge of nutrition were put to the test: due to the extent of
T's malnutrition and dehydration, his growth had been permanently stunted.
Through trial and error, he was able to healthily gain weight for his size.
If you observe animal cruelty or neglect, report it to your local
authorities. They may not be aware that problems exist.
Thanks to Jillian’s patience and firm guidance, T has blossomed
into a handsome, well-behaved boy (well, most of the time). And
the best part is that Jillian has decided that T is part of her family.
We were proud to have T show his stuff at the Open House, and
extend our gratitude to Jillian for giving T the life that he deserves.
BIG RED with Gordon Rhea, 11/09
A.D.O.P.T. Program Participant
(9 year resident at Southside SPCA)
Every Dog Deserves a Good Home
Brainstorming sessions about how to find homes for our long-term residents
often centered on the ideal: Every Dog Deserves a Good Home. What can we
do to help place them? In many cases we don’t know their history, although
often hunting dogs are trained not to interact with humans. Given time, even
the most mistreated and neglected dogs learn to trust their human caretakers
and are transformed into loving and lovable pets. Unfortunately, many of our
long-term residents lack the social skills to go out in public and greet potential
adopters. They shy away from strangers, or simply don’t seek attention from
anyone they don’t know.
Enter Katie Locks and our newest program: A.D.O.P.T. - Adult Dogs Offered
Professional Training. Eligible dogs live with trainer Katie for 1-2 weeks or
more, teaching them the comforts of home, the basics of family life, crate
training, and house breaking. Behavioral issues are professionally assessed
and addressed. This program has already resulted in the adoption of 4 longtime
residents and we think it will help many more long-term residents to find
homes.
We extend our gratitude to everyone who donated to the A.D.O.P.T. Program.
Your generosity gives us the funding to continue this program into next year,
and the confidence that this program is embraced by our many caring
sponsors. Thank you very much for supporting our newest program.
Training is just the first step: we need foster homes for the dogs after they
complete their training while we look for permanent homes. Ideally, the dogs
will go to a home environment where their new skills are properly reinforced.
If you are interested in fostering Honey Bear or another a special ADOPT
dog, please email southsidespcadogs@yahoo.com for more information.
Francee-
Big Red is such a great dog.
We all love him! As does our
entire neighborhood! He is so
gentle. He spends his days
under the bushes in the
backyard, his nights on the
couch in the TV room.
On the weekends we take him
& Jessie to a lake to run after
the ducks. He is a little sore
and limping after those duckchasing
afternoons but he is
always eager to go back.
He is a wonderful addition to our family and he seems pretty happy
and content to be here. We do spoil him rotten though....
Annie Oakley with Katie Locks of
Lucky Dogs Training and More
Katie is also fostering Annie
Oakley who is in training to earn
her Canine Good Citizenship. Katie
is an evaluator for the AKC CGC
program, which requires a dog to
pass ten tests to ensure the dog is a
"Canine Good Citizen" (well
mannered and socially acceptable).
Annie is ALMOST ready to test for
the CGC certification! She has
come a long way since coming to
live with Katie, and the end goal is
to make her a great therapy dog!
Honey Bear - Dachshund/Beagle girl
who needs a foster home
Honey Bear is the next dog
selected for the ADOPT Program.
Honey Bear is a Beagle/Dachshund
mix who arrived at the shelter over
a year ago, leery of humans.

Bailey (front) with his family
Happy Endings
Hi, I'm Dee, one of the volunteers who helps find great homes
for our adorable felines. My husband and I also have quite a
sizable pride of felines at home. Well, one day one of the
shelter kittens at PETSMART presented us with a respectable
sized lump where she'd been immunized. A very rare reaction,
according to my vet. A couple of week of antibiotics were
needed, but no reason to send her back to the shelter, I thought.
She wasn't contagious, so no need to keep her restricted from
any of my cats. So, home with me she goes.
When I arrived home, a neighbor was there who just fell in
love with her, but she was going on vacation for a couple of
weeks. Well, that would be about right. However, something
mysterious happened while she was gone. My husband (the
“NO more cats!” person) started mumbling under his breath to
Phoebe, "We're going to tell Claudia you were stolen by
gypsies while she was gone!"
So she was, but the
gypsy was my good
husband Jerry, and
that is how Phoebe
came to be a cherished
and adored part of our
feline pride.
Fondly, Dee
SPCA
Hi- I have been meaning to write a thank you for a very long time now. We
adopted "Bailey", a 12 wk old hound mix from the Sterling Animal Shelter in
Sterling Massachusetts in March of 2006. With his paperwork came a health
history form with "Southside Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals"
Meherrin VA printed on it.......I don’t know the details of how Bailey and his
littermates came to the Massachusetts Shelter, but I know we LOVE this dog.
Because of him we adopted another hound out of a NC shelter...and they live
with my husband and me (and our american bulldog puppy) in Connecticut.
So anyways, a belated Thank You- to whoever from your organization made it
possible for Bailey to find us. I am attaching a pic here..I am sure you like to hear
happy endings from time to time.
Thanks again, Mary Jo Zanolli
Dear Southside SPCA,
You all were just kind enough to sponsor my baby
Penelope's spaying surgery. She desperately needed it and
had a hormone imbalance from having puppies too young.
My husband was recently laid off and we don't know what
we would have done without your help.
Thank you for being such a blessing!
God Bless, Buddy and Ciarra
Phoebe, making herself at home
Dear Southside SPCA:
In 2002 my wife and I adopted Libby from your
organization. You guys were at PetSMart on Midlothian
Turnpike. Libby was a mix.. we are not quite sure what
she was, and of course it did not matter. She had been at
your shelter for about 6 months. She was the second dog
we had adopted, the other, Maggie, had passed on after a
bout with cancer.
Anyway. Libby was a mess and pretty much did not trust
people. We cleaned her up, took her to the vet and she
became a member of our family along with our other
dog, Jesse, who became her sister. She ran in our fenced
in yard, and slept in our den. We do not keep our dogs
outside.
It took awhile but with a lot of love, petting, kissing she
turned into the sweetest dog in the world. The day she
would not move for me and I had to step over her, since
she had no fear of people now, was one of the happiest of
our lives.
Libby got sick a couple of months ago, she got Lyme
Disease and also developed multiple myleoma. We
wanted to do chemo but she developed 2 tumors that
were inoperable. Libby went to heaven this past Tuesday
in my arms with my wife at her side. I cannot tell you
how much we miss her.
We will be sending a donation to you guys in the near
future in her honor and to thank you for all the good
work you do. Libby will remain in our hearts forever
and my wife told her when she got to heaven to
go look for Maggie. I thought I should let you
know we gave her a good home and she gave us
so much joy and love.
Again, thank you for all you do.
Sincerely, Skip & Carolyn Neal

Bonnie - Bonnie is a VERY smart girl who turned the dog building upside-down
during her stay at the shelter. Bonnie’s escapades included climbing fences,
opening locked entry doors, kennel doors, even opening supposedly dog-proof
dog doors - just to follow her caretakers! To contain her, it was necessary to
cover the top of an outdoor pen and grant her access daily, and crate her nightly
(which is normally never done at our shelter.)
Hi all! Just received the last newsletter and read my favorite section- the
Happy Endings. It is nice to hear good stories every once in awhile about
animals that are being treated with love, respect, and dignity when so often the
stories are of abuse and inhumane treatment.
Remy (who came to us as Sneakers back in 2007) is doing great! He loves his
sisters and when he's not patrolling the back yard for birds and squirrels, he's
chasing the occasional fly that gets into the house.
Remy, with Carol
Hi, my name is Myrtle, and I like to sleep
in bed with my new mommy and daddy.
I have two other kitties living here, too.
They weren’t very nice to me at first, but
now they are my best friends.
I get kisses from mommy every morning,
and make sure I show mommy and daddy
every day how much I love them.
Happy Endings - continued
Dear Sandy: We love every single
day with our precious angel Bonnie.
She is the best retirement gift I could
have ever received in 2008. We are
coming up on a year of her being THE
most important part of our family.
There isn't a part of the house she
doesn't claim as hers! Thank you and
Francee for sending me my little angel
from heaven.
Cathy
He's quite relentless in his fly
obsession, and we're rooting for
him to one day actually catch one.
We love him and wanted to
remind you that thanks to your
early intervention to rescue him,
care for him, and love him, he is
now living the life every dog
deserves.
Best, Carol Anne and Joe
I’m so grateful to Southside SPCA and the adoptions volunteers (especially Dee!)
for helping me find my new home. Thanks!
Betty in her Halloween costume. A mother
cat, Betty was adopted from Southside SPCA
thru the Laburnum Ave. PETSMART in
January, 2009. Her new family adores her!
Gracie and Buddy (with his Hedgehog)
Dear Sandy:
[Enclosed is our donation for “Earl”]
We wanted you to know that Buddy, who we
adopted last November, is an absolute joy.
He and Gracie are a "mess" together -
completely imprinted on each other.
After getting over his initial shyness - he has
become Mr. Personality - and just loves
everyone -- except for dogs bigger than he.
He is intimidated by them and will just roll
over - but that's okay. I've attached a few pics
of Buddy and Gracie - Buddy has his favorite
toy, his hedgehog, which he carries around
the house.
With warmest regards,
Bob and Leslie Conrad

Southside SPCA Mourns the Loss of a Great Supporter
On August 28, 2009, we learned of the passing of our
dear friend and supporter Dr. Waverly M. Cole. Dr. Cole,
together with his partner of 50+ years, Dr. John R. Cook,
was a major supporter of the Southside SPCA. Drs. Cole
and Cook were the lead donors for the construction of
our new shelter. The primary building at our new site
bears the name of their beloved dog, April. “April’s
House” stands as a reminder to us of the generosity and
love for animals that Dr. Cole and Dr. Cook shared.
