Make observations of wind direction at the same time each day over a 5 - 10 day
period. Record your observations on a "wind spider", found on Activity Sheet 7.
Choose a site away from buildings.
In groups of three, one team member holds the wind vane at arm's length, a second
team member holds a compass level and lines the compass needle up in the direction
of north; while the third team member observes the direction the wind vane is
pointing.
Record the wind direction on your group's wind spider. If there was no wind, do not
colour in a square.
Record your observations for a week or two, once in the morning and once in the
afternoon. Compare your group's findings with other group findings.
Ask: From which direction did the wind blow most often?
Are there differences in wind direction between readings made in the morning
and those in the afternoon?
Can you see any patterns?
