Processes phenomena in coastal meteorology are caused, or significantly affected, by: > sharp changes in heat, moisture, and momentum transfer through contrast in heating, roughness change, moisture supply > changes in elevation, often a complex orography > changes in surface radiation by coastal clouds and fog sketch from Rotunno et al., 1992 M.Quante 2002
Examples of coastal meteorological phenomena: ⇒ smaller scale weather systems sea/land breeze, related thunderstorms, coastal fronts, orographically trapped winds, low let jets, fog, haze, marine stratus clouds mainly involved: marine and terrestrial boundary layers air-sea-interaction but also: meso-scale atmospheric dynamics, synoptic scale meteorological systems, circulation of the coastal ocean ⇒ the more complex cases M.Quante 2002
