Game Sense.
Cool Down
- Groups of 4 in a grid 5 x 10m, 2 attackers and a defender at one end
and one defender at the other.
- The two attackers try to get past the defender 1 to score a try.
- As soon as they’ve attacked one end they turn around and try to get
past defender 2.
- Players have 6 run-throughs and see how many successful attempts
they make.
- The defender tries to make a two handed tag of the ball carrier.
- Swap roles
- All passes must go backwards.
- The defender must go back to their starting position each time.
2. Tackling in a Grid
- Coach calls a letter, A, B or C and the front person in that line runs
directly ahead.
- The defender D completes the required tackle.
- As he regains his feet the coach calls a letter again and the defender
makes his next tackle.
3. Defensive Starts
In this activity the team will practice their defensive structure/pattern from various situations that may occur during a game.
These situations include defending from kick offs, defending from drop-outs, defending after turnovers, defending from
scrums and penalties.
This activity can be conducted both unopposed (simply practicing the movements and patterns) or with an attacking team to
defend against.
4. Attacking Starts
In this activity the team will practice their attacking structure/pattern from various situations that may occur during a game.
These situations include attacking from kick offs, attacking from drop-outs, attacking after turnovers, attacking from scrums
and penalties.
This activity can be conducted both unopposed (simply practicing the movements and patterns) or with defenders to attack
against.
5. Kicking and Catching - 2 teams are positioned randomly in 15m x 15m grids . The grids are
20m apart. One team has the ball and it is to be kicked into the other
grid.
- The ball must land in the grid and be caught by the other team.
- For an error, the non-offending team earns a point.
- First team to score a certain number of points wins. Change ends
after each game.
- There needs to be a focus on kicking and catching technique as well
as communication and cooperation
6. Small Sided Game
- Set up a grid of 40m with markers down each side every 5m. The
width will vary depending on how many players there are.
- Divide the players into 2 teams.
- The attacking team start at one end of the grid.
- The defenders start in line with the markers 5 metres back.
- The attackers control the ball for six tackles.
- The defence only has to retreat back (after a tackle) to the next line
(set of markers) so sometimes they may be defending off as little as
1m.
- After 6 tackles mark how far the team got down the grid and swap
roles.
