PASCHAL MESSAGE
of His Grace Benjamin, Bishop of San Francisco and the West
to the Reverend Clergy and Faithful of the Diocese of the West
Martha said to Him, “I know that he [Lazarus] will
rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes
in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever
lives and believes in me shall never die.”
John 11:24-26 (NKJV)
Christ is risen! Indeed He is risen!
We exchange those joyous words so easily and with great hope and faith every year as we
celebrate the Lord’s resurrection. But as we celebrate, it is good for all of us to remember the words of
the Lord Himself as quoted above in the remarkable conversation with Martha, the sister of Lazarus.
Jesus is on His way to Bethany where He is to raise His friend, Lazarus, from the dead in a
foreshadowing of His own resurrection and, by extension, the resurrection of each and every one of
us. When confronted with the belief of Martha in the general resurrection of the dead, Jesus reminds
her (and us) that resurrection and life is not a “what.” Resurrection and Life is a “Who.”
Only by our faithful and complete communion with the One who IS resurrection and life will
we know resurrection and life ourselves. If we believe in Him, unite with Him, enter a communion of
love with Him, we cannot die. His Pascha becomes our Pascha. Each of us can make this Resurrection
and Life present in our daily lives and thereby share it with the world around us. God grant this reality
to each of us!
May the risen Son of God shine brightly in the heart of each one of you, my diocesan family!
And I say to you all again: Christ is risen! Indeed He is risen!

PARISH LIFE:
From the Desk of Fr.Nicolas. Christ is Risen!
Registration forms for our Summer Camp program are available
in our church office. Please do not postpone the completion
of these forms. We have limited accommodations to
transport the children to and from camp. We leave Sunday,
July 1 st at 1pm and return Saturday, July 7 at 4pm.

Maintenance Committee. The two large projects were successfully
completed: the repairing of the main sewer line and
the repair and resurfacing of the Parish Hall balcony and
steps. We thank those parishioners who donated toward the
sewer project. It's not too late to assist financially.
Some projects pending are: 1) Replace the double doors in
the Parish Hall by the drinking fountain; 2) Replace the south
facing facia board of the Church Building; 3) Replace all the
wooden windows on the west side of the Parish Hall; 4)
Small miscellaneous minor items needing repair.
Work parties will start in June and the 1 st one is scheduled
for Saturday, June 16 at 10am. Please come toil with us for
the good of the Lord’s temple and bring your tools along!

Sisterhood News. Thank you to everyone who came out to
clean the Church for Pascha. It is always a big job especially
to clean the candlestands. We ask people who put candles in
the stands not to melt the wax at the bottom of the candles
before placing them in the holders. Our stands have three
various sizes to accommodate the candles purchased, therefore
you don't need to melt the wax to put them in the little
holders in order to keep the candles upright.
The meal after the midnight Liturgy went very well.
We appreciated all those who brought and donated meats,
salads, coffee, milk and wines for the meal. Also to those who
helped clean up the Hall. We were able to leave the Hall at
4:30 am.
The Sisterhood Feast Day will be celebrated the
Monday after Pentecost. More information to follow in the
next bulletin. All ladies are welcomed to join the Sisterhood.
Our dues are $25.00 a year.

Books from Russia. In the near future we will be ordering a
new selection of Russian titles and religious items from a
wholesale supplier in Moscow for our Kiosk. If there is a
book in Russian or a certain rare icon that you are looking
for and cannot purchase anywhere in the U.S., please consult
Vitaly Efimenkov to see if he may be able to special-order it
for you.
L.O.V.E.S. Attention knitters and crocheters!! We’re making
hats/caps for those in hospice care. Adult or childrens'
sizes. Anyone interested can contact me at mrina_burgmeier@hotmail.com.

Russian Saturday School. On Saturday of Bright Week
April 21, there was a Paschal Liturgy with our customary
children’s Cross-Procession. The service was followed by
egg-hunt for kids and our traditional Paschal lunch. We
thank all who participated and helped!
The school year will complete with a Thanksgiving
moleben in the church followed by Commencement ceremonies
and student performances on Saturday, June 9 th .
The staff and children are preparing a special concert to
commemorate the 200-year Jubilee of the famous
Borodino Battle against Napoleon’s troops. All are invited
to attend.

Book Club. The May meeting of the Holy Virgin Mary Orthodox
Book Club will be Sun. May 20th at 1:00 p.m. in the
Parish Library. We will be discussing Archbishop Averky
(Taushev), The Apocalypse: in the Teachings of Ancient
Christianity. Copies of the book are available in the Kiosk.

Parish Library, located on the 1 st floor of the School Building,
has been undergoing a time-consuming cataloguing
process, undertaken by the teacher volunteers of our Russian
Saturday School, and has not been officially open to the public
for a number of years. We are glad to inform, however,
that one of our parishioners stepped up and offered assistance.
The Library will now be opened several Sundays a
month after the 2 nd Liturgy for those parishioners who would
like to loan books from our Russian and English language
book collections. Mrs. Valeria Bochkur, our regular 2 nd service
attendant, will be able to check books out to the members
of the parish for a period of 2 weeks. Non-parishioners
will need to present their picture ID and provide a cell phone
number in order to lend a book.
