<strong>for</strong> the training <strong>of</strong> altar servers.<br />

It is my desire that those that<br />

serve at the altar <strong>of</strong> the Mass<br />

help others to become holy by<br />

their example and knowledge <strong>of</strong><br />

what occurs during every Mass.


ABLUTION BOWL<br />

Ritual Washing. The ritual cleansing <strong>of</strong> a<br />

priest's hands during Mass.


ALB<br />

Alb. A long white garment which can be used<br />

by all liturgical ministers. It is a reminder <strong>of</strong> the<br />

baptismal garment worn when the new Christian<br />

"Put on Christ."


AMICE<br />

Religious Garment. A length <strong>of</strong> white fabric<br />

worn by a priest around the neck.


ASPERGILLUM<br />

Holy water sprinkler. A brush or per<strong>for</strong>ated<br />

container <strong>for</strong> sprinkling holy water.


ALTAR CRUCIFIX<br />

Crucifix. A crucifix with a corpus that is placed<br />

on the front/center <strong>of</strong> the altar facing the priest.


BATTERIES (FOR LAVALIERE<br />

MICROPHONE)<br />

Batteries. 9V batteries are used <strong>for</strong> the lavaliere<br />

microphone in our parish.


BOAT<br />

Boat. Used to carry incense during Mass.<br />

Normally the boat is carried by the thurifer at all<br />

times. So the boat and thurible are carried by the<br />

same person at all times.


BOOK OF THE GOSPELS<br />

Book <strong>of</strong> the Gospels. The book contains the<br />

Gospels <strong>of</strong> Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.<br />

Contains only the Gospel readings. It is used on<br />

more solemn occasions and is carried by the<br />

deacon if it is used.


BREAD<br />

Bread. The bread used in the celebration <strong>of</strong> the Most Holy<br />

Eucharistic Sacrifice must be unleavened, purely <strong>of</strong><br />

wheat, and recently made so that there is no danger <strong>of</strong><br />

decomposition. It follows there<strong>for</strong>e that bread made from<br />

another substance, even if it is grain, or if it is mixed with<br />

another substance different from wheat to such an extent<br />

that it would not commonly be considered wheat bread,<br />

does not constitute valid matter <strong>for</strong> confecting the<br />

Sacrifice and the Eucharistic Sacrament.


CASSOCK<br />

Cassock. A long black garment worn under the<br />

Surplice. Also worn by Diocesan Priests<br />

(Black), Monsignors (Rose), Bishops (Violet),<br />

Cardinals (Red), and the Pope (White).


CHALICE<br />

Chalice. Made <strong>of</strong> a precious metal (usually gold<br />

or silver) to hold the Precious Blood.


CHARCOAL<br />

Charcoal. Used to burn incense. They are selflighting<br />

once they start to burn.


CHASUBLE<br />

Chasuble. The sleeveless outer garment, slipped over the<br />

head, hanging down from the shoulders covering the alb<br />

and stole <strong>of</strong> the priest. It is the proper Mass vestment <strong>for</strong><br />

the main celebrant and its color varies according to the<br />

feast.


CIBORIA<br />

Ciboria. More than one ciborium. A vessel used<br />

to hold the Hosts which will be used <strong>for</strong><br />

communion. They are also used to reserve the<br />

Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle.


CIBORIUM<br />

Ciborium. A vessel used to hold the Hosts<br />

which will be used <strong>for</strong> communion. They are<br />

also used to reserve the Blessed Sacrament in<br />

the tabernacle.


CINCTURE<br />

Cincture. A long cord used <strong>for</strong> fastening albs at<br />

the waist. It holds the loose-fitting type <strong>of</strong> alb in<br />

place and is used to adjust it to proper length.<br />

Female altar servers will wear the liturgical<br />

color <strong>of</strong> the day.<br />

Green - Ordinary Time. Red - Passion (Palm) Sunday, Good Friday,<br />

Pentecost Sunday, and on the Feast Days <strong>of</strong> Martyrs including the<br />

Apostles and Evangelists. Violet - Advent and Lent. White - Worn<br />

during the Christmas, Easter seasons and celebrations <strong>of</strong> Mary, the<br />

Angels, Saints who were not martyrs, All Saints, Birth <strong>of</strong> John the<br />

Baptist, Chair <strong>of</strong> Peter, Conversion <strong>of</strong> Paul, St. John the Evangelist and<br />

is the preferred color <strong>for</strong> Masses <strong>for</strong> the dead. Rose - 3rd Sunday <strong>of</strong><br />

Advent (Gaudete Sunday) and the 4th Sunday <strong>of</strong> Lent (Laetare Sunday).


COPE<br />

Cope. A cape-like garment which is put over the<br />

shoulders and hangs to the ankles, it is open in<br />

the front and worn by a priest or deacon in<br />

processions at Benediction and in other services.


CORPORAL<br />

Corporal. White cloth used during Mass. A<br />

white, usually linen, cloth on which the<br />

consecrated bread and wine are placed during<br />

Mass.


CREDENCE TABLE<br />

Credence table. Table that holds the ciboria and<br />

chalices and other items that will be used during<br />

Mass.


CRUET<br />

Cruet. Small bottle used during Mass. One <strong>of</strong><br />

two containers that hold the water and wine<br />

used during Mass.


EWER<br />

Ewer. Large jug with a wide spout. Used <strong>for</strong><br />

when the priest washes his hands in the Lavabo<br />

Bowl.


FINGER TOWEL<br />

Finger towel. Small towel that priest uses to dry<br />

his hands after using the ewer and lavabo bowl.


HUMERAL VEIL<br />

Humeral veil. A silk shawl covering the<br />

shoulders and hands, worn by a priest while<br />

holding sacred vessels.


INCENSE<br />

Incense. A substance burned <strong>for</strong> its smell. A<br />

substance, usually fragrant gum or wood, that<br />

gives <strong>of</strong>f a pleasant smell when burned.


LAVABO BOWL<br />

Lavabo bowl. A priest's ritual washing <strong>of</strong> the<br />

hands after preparing the gifts.


LAVALIERE MICROPHONE<br />

Lavaliere microphone. A wireless microphone<br />

that the priest wears under his vestments.


LECTIONARY<br />

Lectionary. The readings that are read from this<br />

book are <strong>for</strong> the Mass <strong>of</strong> the day. Sometimes the<br />

gospel is also read from this book. Usually on<br />

Sundays, the gospel is read from the Book <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Gospels and not the lectionary.


ORDO<br />

Ordo. Scripture reading list according to a<br />

schedule <strong>for</strong> our diocese and several others as<br />

determined by the bishops. <strong>Altar</strong> servers and<br />

others will be able to find the color <strong>of</strong> the day<br />

and the prayers that are to be said in this book.


PALL<br />

Pall. A square cover <strong>for</strong> a chalice. Usually a<br />

linen covered board.


PATEN<br />

Paten. A shallow metal plate, <strong>of</strong>ten made <strong>of</strong><br />

gold or silver used to hold the Precious Body.


PROCESSIONAL CANDLE<br />

Processional candle. Usually 2 or more candles<br />

that are carried during the procession into and<br />

out <strong>of</strong> the church during Mass.


PROCESSIONAL CROSS<br />

Processional cross. Cross used to process in and<br />

out <strong>of</strong> the church.

PURIFICATOR<br />

Purificator. A linen cloth used to wipe the<br />

chalice during communion. Should also be used<br />

to wipe up and/or cover any spills <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Precious Blood.


PYX<br />

Pyx. A container used to hold the Precious Body<br />

when a visit to a hospital or home is made. It is<br />

made <strong>of</strong> precious metal and should not have<br />

plastic inside it.


SACRAMENTARY<br />

Sacramentary. Contains the opening prayer,<br />

prayer over the gifts, prayer after communion,<br />

and solemn blessings. Eucharistic prayers and<br />

prefaces <strong>for</strong> all <strong>of</strong> the masses including most<br />

special occasions.


SANCTUARY LAMP<br />

Sanctuary lamp. This is a candle in a red<br />

container that is lit when the Precious Body is in<br />

the tabernacle and is placed near the tabernacle.


SANCTUS BELLS<br />

Sanctus bells. A bell rung during the Epiclesis<br />

and the Consecration <strong>of</strong> the bread and wine as<br />

they are Transubstantiated into the Body and<br />

Blood <strong>of</strong> Christ.


STOLE<br />

Stole. Priest's Stole. A long cloth "scarf."<br />

According to the manner in which it worn it is<br />

the mark <strong>of</strong> the Office <strong>of</strong> the priest or deacon. A<br />

priest wears it around the neck, letting it hang<br />

down in front.


SURPLICE<br />

Surplice. This is a wide-sleeved garment,<br />

slipped over the head, covering the shoulders,<br />

and coming down below the hips. It is worn<br />

over the cassock.


TABERNACLE<br />

Tabernacle. The shrine or receptacle either<br />

round or rectangular that serves as a place <strong>for</strong><br />

the exclusive reservation <strong>of</strong> the Blessed<br />

Sacrament. It should be <strong>of</strong> solid material,<br />

opaque, secure and inviolable, fitting the<br />

architecture <strong>of</strong> the church in a preeminent place.


THURIBLE<br />

Thurible (Censor). The Censor, also known as the<br />

Thurible, is used at solemn occasion to incense the<br />

bread and wine after the <strong>of</strong>fertory, the priest, and<br />

congregation. The Boat holds the incense until it is<br />

place in the censor by the celebrant.


TONGS<br />

Tongs. Used to assist in lighting charcoal to be<br />

placed in the thurible to burn the incense. Also<br />

used in assisting the lighting <strong>of</strong> the charcoal we<br />

see a lighter and a taper.


WINE<br />

Wine. The wine that is used in the most sacred<br />

celebration <strong>of</strong> the Eucharistic Sacrifice must be<br />

natural, from the fruit <strong>of</strong> the grape, pure and<br />

incorrupt, not mixed with other substances.


PYX TRAY<br />

Pyx tray. Used to hold pyxes. Ministers that will<br />

be bringing communion to others outside <strong>of</strong><br />

Mass will place their pyxes on this tray which is<br />

on the Credence Table until the end <strong>of</strong> Mass<br />

when the priest will distribute the pyxes after a<br />

blessing is given to the Extraordinary Ministers<br />

<strong>of</strong> Holy Communion (EMHC).


TABERNACLE KEY<br />

Tabernacle key is usually kept locked in the<br />

room inside the sacristy and is used to unlock<br />

the tabernacle when consecrated hosts are<br />

needed.
