Teaching
2009 & 07 Instructor, FE 538, Field Hydrology
This is an intensive one-week course where students learn field methods in research
hydrology. I led a module focused on developing and answering research questions via
stream tracer experiments. During the day, students learned various methods for gauging
streams and conducted tracer experiments to determine changes in discharge based on
groundwater inflows. At night, they learned to tabulate, analyze, and interpret their data
before presenting findings to the group.
2009 Guest Lecturer, FOR 111, Introduction to Forestry
2008 Instructor, Ecosystems Informatics Summer Institute
Conducted a two-day short course teaching methods in forest and hydrological
measurements. Students learned to measure tree diameter at breast height, tree height,
tree age, and growth increment. They also learned methods in estimating soil saturated
hydraulic conductivity using an Amoozemeter constant-head permeameter, soil depth and
resistance using a cone penetrometer, and stream gauging using flumes, weirs, and the
velocity-area method. In addition to the short-course, I served as mentor for two-students
who developed and implemented a small research project at my experimental watershed
throughout the 12-week summer course.
