simply answered, t< Yes Swami, she is absolutely pure
in heart." His face lighted up and his eyes shone with
divine fire. " 1 knew it, I felt it; I must have her for
my work in Calcutta/' he said with enthusiasm.
He then told me of his plans and hopes for the
advancement of the women of India. " Education is
what they need," he would say ; " we must have a
school in Calcutta." A school for girls has since been
established there by the Sister Nivedita, and the above-
mentioned disciple shares the work with her, living in a
Calcutta lane and wearing the 5an, doing the Mother's
work as best she may. She shared all these experi-
ences with me ; for we together sought out the Master
and asked him to teach us He was the ' man of the
hour' in Detroit that winter. Society smiled upon him
^ and he was much sought after. The daily papers re-
corded his comings and his goings ; even his food was
discussed, one paper gravely stating that his breakfast
" consisted of bread and butter thickly sprinkled with
pepper I Letters and invitations came pouring in, and
Detroit was at the feet of Vivekananda.
