GroGel
The greatest
needs of newly
hatched birds are
water, carbohydrates
and protein.
GroGel has
been specially formulated to meet these
needs. After mixing, it has the consistency of
green, chopped up jello. It is put in plastic
troughs in the shipping box with your birds
to eat during their trip. Though it is not a
necessity, it starts them eating sooner, provides
them moisture for the trip and aids
their immune and gastrointestinal systems –
all before they arrive! GroGel is also an
excellent insurance in case there are any
delays during shipping.
We Can Ship
As Few As Two Ducklings!
We can ship you as few as two ducklings
and/or goslings! We insert a heat pack in the
shipping box that will supply extra heat for
up to sixty hours, use a special box and
insert a foam liner on the bottom of the box
for extra insulation. By doing this losses are
extremely rare during shipping. The heat
pack only costs $12 and our minimum
charge for birds is $38. Contact us if you
have any questions.
Duclair:
In association with Stonechurch Farms in upstate
New York, we have developed our own strain of
Duclair duck - a French Heritage breed of duck originally
grown in Normandy, France. The Duclairs are
used by some of the most discerning chefs because
of its complex, rich, and earthy-yet-elegant flavor.
Most of the meat in the Duclair is concentrated in a
large breast. The Duclair resembles no other duck on
the market. It eats more like red meat, not poultry.
The Duclair is smaller than a Pekin or Muscovy - we
recommend they be grown to twelve weeks of age
when they will be about 5-5.5 pounds liveweight. Our first birds were colored but over time
we selected them to be pure white to ensure a more beautiful carcass after processing. We are
the only breeders in North America with these Duclair. If you have an interest in growing them
commercially, contact Stonechurch Farms at 845-658-3243. Quantities are limited.
Pasture Grown Ducks
We have experienced a tremendous growth in customers
purchasing our Grimaud Hybrid ducklings
from us on a regular basis to grow for their local
restaurants, meat markets and CSA's (Community
Supported Agriculture). Some buy on a weekly basis
and others every two or three weeks. Quantities vary
from 30 to 3500. Many of them grow their ducks on
pasture for as much of the year as possible. In this
way, the birds are out in the fresh air, their manure is spread naturally on the pasture, there is
a slight increase in meat content from the exercise, it is a more natural life for the ducks and
it is a production method preferred by many consumers. In addition, with the growing desire
by restaurants and consumers for locally produced food, you will have a real advantage competing
with ducks that are frozen and may travel hundreds to thousands of miles to your market.
Contact us for more information on how to grow ducks profitably.
DUCKLINGS
Rouen ducks were originally bred in
France and retain the coloring of our native
Mallard. They are second to only Pekins and
Muscovy in size and are said to have very
flavorful meat. They are moderate layers with
many of their eggs being greenish in color.
The White Crested duck is a beautiful,
unique breed with its tuft of feathers on the
top of their head. The ducklings we ship
will all have good crests on them. All our
breeders undergo the tests suggested by
the Wissenschaftlicher Geflugelhof Institute
in Germany to ensure complete genetic
integrity.
Jumbo Pekin This is our largest Pekin
duck. It should be the biggest Pekin in the show
compared to similar aged birds. Males are 11-
13+ lbs. and females 10-12 lbs. by 18 weeks.
The beautiful Buff duck, also called the
Buff Orpington, originated in England. It is
often considered a dual purpose breed, laying
good quantities of eggs and giving a clean
appearing carcass because of their light colored
feathers. They are the inner two ducks
shown in the picture above.
The Blue Swedish duck is similar in size
to a Rouen and is also very hardy and calm.
All the ducklings we send are the blue/gray
color. As with all blue poultry, however, their
progeny will hatch in blues, blacks and
silvers.
“I just wanted to send you a big thank you for the beautiful ducks and wonderful
service you provide. I know I will purchase from you again in the future.”
– Michelle from Norfolk, NE
The black Cayuga breed is thought to have
been developed from ducks in the region of
Lake Cayuga in New York. It is a hardy and
quiet breed. Initially this breed has a deep
green, iridescent shine but as they age, they
grow more white feathers (just as we humans
gray with age!). Many of their eggs’ shells are
greenish or blackish in color.
“I just picked up ten Khaki Campbell
ducklings form the post office and am
now sharing them with my fourth grade
class. They are all healthy, beautiful,
and climbing on top of each other.
Thank you all for taking great care in
hatching and shipping them safely.”
– Joseph from San Diego, CA
The Khaki Campbell duck was developed
in England at the turn of the century for
egg production. In small, undisturbed flocks
they are very good layers. Khaki Campbells
are excellent foragers and capable of hatching
their own eggs.
DUCKLINGS
The Mallard is the breed from which all
domestic ducks, except the Muscovy,
originate. They can fly extremely well and
can consistently hatch and raise a brood of
ducklings. They are prized because of their
delicate flavor. For orders of 600-999,
duckling are $2.25. For 1000 or more, they
are $2.00. If 4000+ are purchased in a
season, they are $1.85.
The Pekin is by far the most common
breed of duck in North America. The
AFLAC duck and those cute, yellow ducklings
you think of at Easter are Pekins. They
were introduced into the United States from
China in the 1870’s. It is the main breed
used for commercial meat production
because of its exceptionally fast growth rate
and good feed conversion. They are ex -
tremely hardy and one of the calmest breeds.
See page 3 for more detailed information on
using our Pekins for meat production.
DUCKLINGS
The Welsh Harlequin is a handsome bird
and an excellent multipurpose breed as they
are good egg producers and they make a very
nice appearing meat carcass as their underfeathers
are white. They were developed in
1949 in England and came to the USA in
1968. We have found them to be the calmest
duck breed we have.
Golden 300 Hybrid & White Layer Ducks
The Golden 300 Hybrid and White Layer are two strains of
ducks we have bred for high egg production. Since we sell about
10,000 eggs per week for eating, we need efficient, quality egg producers
for both the fresh and balut (partially incubated duck egg)
market. As you can see from the chart, these strains lay more and
larger eggs than the Khaki Campbell. They are also calmer and
more consistent from flock to flock in their production.
The Golden 300 Hybrid ducks we send you can be sexed at any
age by their color. The males are shades of black and the females
are shades of brown. The picture is not representative of all birds
as the males are sometimes all black or resemble Rouen males.
Sometimes the females are dark brown or have white on them. They
do not retain this sex-linked characteristic in future generations,
however. Both sexes of the White Layer are white. Therefore,
they must be vent sexed like other ducks and geese.
The Black Swedish is very similar to the
Blue Swedish in terms of their size and hardiness.
Unlike the Blue Swedish, however,
the Black Swedish will breed true gener -
were developed in the Pomerania region of
Europe – which is now northwest Poland and
northeast Germany.
Fawn & White Runners
Black Runners
The unique aspect of Runner ducks is their
slender, upright stance. This enables them to
move around much more quickly than most
other breeds of ducks. They originally came
from Southeast Asia where they are used for
egg production and herded among rice fields
eating snails, insects and waste grain. They
have a strong herding instinct.
GOSLINGS
The African goose is descended from the
wild Chinese Swan Goose of China. The only
explanation for the name African is that it was
customary in earlier times to give newly
introduced breeds of poultry exotic names.
The African goose is intermediate in size
between the Super African and Brown
Chinese.
The White and Brown Chinese geese
originate from China and are related to
African geese. They are the smallest of the
common domestic geese and are often
referred to as “Swan Geese” because of their
carriage, grace and ancestry. They are the
most talkative of our goose breeds. Though
all geese love grass, many people prefer using
the Chinese for weeding purposes because of
their small size and active nature.
8
The Embden is the exclusive goose
breed grown commercially for meat in North
America due to its large size, white feathering
and rapid growth. Most agree that they
were originally developed in Germany with
subsequent breeding in England.
“Thank you so much for the two wonderful
African goslings we purchased
from you. They arrived healthy and
happy and are such a delight each day.”
– Kimberly from Ann Arbor, MI
The Toulouse was originally bred in
France and is one of the most common and
popular barnyard geese. They are beautiful,
prolific and can be grown for meat, too.
The Pilgrim goose was developed in the
early 1900’s in Iowa. It is one of the few
American bred geese and is very calm. A
unique characteristic of the Pilgrim goose is
that its sex can be determined from its feather
color. The males are white with touches
of gray on them. The females look much
like a Toulouse though their color is lighter
and they often have white faces.
The Tufted Buff geese originate from the
American Buff geese. Their unique characteristic
is a tuft of feathers on the top of their
head much like the Tufted Roman goose. This
is a very hardy and unique breed of goose.
“Got my 8 Tufted Buff goslings and 10
Buff ducklings on Wednesday. They all
made it to Illinois in fine shape and
are doing great. I was so pleased at
how healthy and lively they were after
their trip.” – Rachel from Blandsville, IL
GOSLINGS
We offer the Maxima strain of Canada
goose which weighs 9-13 pounds. Many
customers have told us it is the best pet they
have ever had - very calm, curious and
friendly. A free permit is supplied but if you
sell or give away Canada geese a breeder’s
license must be obtained from the US Fish
and Wildlife Service. We cannot sex the
Canada goslings and the minimum order is
six. They are shipped by Express Mail which
costs $35.00 for six goslings. Shipping is
from early May through mid June. If interested,
phone us and put your name on our
waiting list as we always sell out of the
Canada geese.
“I have never ordered any live waterfowl before so I entered the process rather
reluctantly. My first call to your company quickly allayed all my fears and you
patiently answered all my questions. Your customer service is exemplary.”
GOSLINGS
A flock of Sebastopol geese is a fascinating
sight as no other waterfowl have their
curly, twisted feathers. They appear to have
originated in Southeastern Europe and are
very quiet and amiable. We have the largest
breeding flock of Sebastopols in North
America - over 250 geese.
“My three darling ducklings arrived
today – healthy, active and just so cute.
I want to thank you so much not only
for your service but for the quality of
these healthy babies. I couldn’t be more
pleased.” – Linda from McCleary, WA
The Super African is an impressive,
regal breed of goose. They are large with a
well developed dewlap. In fact, they are
probably the first breed of geese to have
been selected for dewlaps.
10
“We are happy to find a company that
would let us order just two; in the past
we have not gotten geese because we did
not want more than two and after seeing
how vigorous these two are you will have
all our waterfowl business!”
– Kimberly from Ann Arbor, MI
The Roman Tufted is a smaller white
goose weighing between 10 and 12 pounds
with a small tuft of feathers on its head. It is
a very friendly, prolific and noble goose.
The Buff is one of only two breeds of geese
developed in the United States. It is a very
friendly and prolific goose that has a reputation
for being very calm.
We imported the French Toulouse for
meat purposes. They are not an exhibition
Toulouse as some have extra white feathers
on them, but they are especially hardy, grow
quickly with a minimum of care, are very
calm, very fertile and lay the most eggs of
any goose breed we have. Not many people
have a Toulouse goose directly from France!
GAME BIRDS & DUCK HATCHING EGGS
Guineas originate from Africa and are
excellent foragers. After starting, they grow
and thrive on bugs (they love ticks), insects
and weed seeds. Guineas are also great
watch dogs as they call out at the approach of
any strangers. Not only will they alert you of
visiting humans but any type of dogs or predators.
Their meat is all dark and highly prized
by many restaurants. All our Guinea eggs are
from breeding stock imported from Grimaud
Freres of France and are certified disease
free. They have been bred for excellent
growth rate, 4.1 lbs. in 70 days, and feed conversion.
These will be hatched every two
weeks starting February 25. Contact us for
pricing for quantities over 240.
Our Wild Turkeys are the Eastern strain.
Since they are very hardy and excellent flyers
they are making a major comeback throughout
the United States. They are handsome, stately
birds to raise. Wild Turkeys are not as large as
domestic turkeys but will still make a very
memorable, historical Thanks giving meal.
Hatching duck eggs
is an excellent project
for those wanting to
experience the entire
rearing process. Duck
hatching eggs are available
most of the year
and are half the price of
the ducklings. The
minimum purchase is
$27 plus packaging and
postage. We guarantee fertility of at least
80% but cannot guarantee hatchability as
that is entirely dependent on your incubator.
Custom made foam packaging is used
for shipping. Please visit our website for
incubation instructions and pictures of the
hatching process.
“Just like last year, 100% of the eggs
you sent were fertile. I’m thrilled every
Blue Runner hatched, and 7 out of 10
Golden 300’s. I witnessed some very
rough handling but your excellent way
of packaging saved them all.”
– Leslie from Oklahoma City, OK
Chinese Ringneck Pheasants are beautiful
birds for hunting or just to see around
your property. They are very hardy and
strong flyers if released at 10-14 weeks of
age in the wild. Their meat is delicious and
found in the finest restaurants. These are
shipped on Wednesdays and cannot be
mixed with any other waterfowl or game
birds for shipping. Call us for quotes for
quantities over 360.
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
Prior to their arrival:
You need to prepare
a place for
them that provides
the protection and
warmth they need.
Usually this is in a
barn, out-building
or garage. It is best to clean and disinfect the
pen prior to using it. Initially baby ducklings
need about 1/3 square foot per bird. Start with
2 inches of wood shavings or straw for bedding.
Place the water in the pen a day in
advance so it is not too cold for them initially.
For the first several days you can add our Poult
Vitamin pack or sugar (1/2 cup sugar: 1 qt.
water) to the water. If you cannot get a waterfowl
starter feed, use a game bird or chicken
starter of at least 20% protein. Turn the heat on
the day before you expect them so the bedding
is warm for their arrival. One heat lamp can
handle about 40 ducklings or 20 goslings. The
lamp is normally hung about 18" from the bedding
where it should be 90-95 degrees. There
should be some type of solid wall or partition
around them to prevent drafts. Make sure
dogs, cats and rats are kept out.
They have arrived!
Normally the post office phones when your
birds arrive and asks you to pick them up.
When you get them home, it is very important
you dip the beak of each bird in the water to
ensure they get their first drink. Make sure
they tip their head back to drink. If they have
had a rough journey and seem weak, you may
need to check them every 30-60 minutes to give
them another drink. If you do have a few that
are weaker than the others, it is best to separate
them until they regain their strength. Make sure
they can’t get in the water and get chilled.
The best way to judge the comfort of the
birds is to watch them. If they are huddled
under the lamp, they need more heat. If they
are all bedded down away from the lamp, the
12
lamp is too low or it is too warm in the room.
They should be spread throughout the pen with
some eating, some drinking, some sleeping and
some playing.
As they grow....
Poultry (and especially waterfowl) grow
very fast. Make sure you enlarge their pen as
they grow and add clean bedding as necessary.
Typically it is better to add clean bedding on
top of the old than to clean it out every day.
Usually the temperature can be dropped
about 5 degrees a week and turned off after 2-
3 weeks. As they grow and add weight you can
allow them to venture outdoors for brief periods
during the day.
Once they are fully
feathered they can
stay outside all the
time (7-9 weeks)
though they should
still have some shelter
from the sun and
heavy rains.
Ducklings and goslings can be introduced
to swimming water as early as one week of age
but you must be careful. They must be able to
walk in and out of the water very easily. The
water should not be too cold and they must be
able to find their heat lamp for rewarming
without difficulty. Do not allow them to
become soaked and chilled!
Waterfowl can also be very messy with
their water. For them it is best to make a wire
platform on which the waterer sits. For babies
it can be 1/2" hardware cloth and for adults it
can be 1" welded wire nailed on to wood cross
pieces. This can be placed over a pan for the
babies or over a pit for adults. The platform
should be large enough to extend at least 6"
out from the edge of the waterer for the babies
and 30" for adults. With this plat form, any
spilled water goes through the wire and out of
reach. They cannot track it back to the bedding
or make a mud puddle with it.
ORDERING INSTRUCTIONS & SHIPPING
Minimum Order Size
There is no minimum per breed of the
ducks or geese that you must order. Use these
minimums for the most economical quantity
to ship. If you want fewer ducklings or
goslings, please see Page 2.
Goslings only . . . 8 Turkeys . . . . . . .10
If You Want To Order Specific Sexes
All sexed birds are identified with colored
masking tape on their leg. Look on the back
of your invoice for the color key. The tape
can be removed at any time. The cost is $1.75
per bird.
Ducks – For ducklings you can order any
combination of sexes you want.
Geese – For the White Chinese, Embden,
Toulouse and African you can order up to
two more females than males but no more.
The remaining breeds (marked with an
asterisk in the price section) can only be
sold as pairs or straight run. Call if you
have a question.
Guineas, Turkeys, Pheasants
Sexing is not available.
Determining Postage Charges
If you phone with your order, we will tell
you your postage charges. If you order on line,
the postage will be computed automatically for
you. If you want to mail your order with your
check, please call us at 800-424-7755 and we
can quickly determine the postage charge for
your shipment.
Methods of Shipping
All birds are sent Priority Mail unless you
request Express Mail which provides a tracking
number, is substantially more expensive
but will probably be no faster. Express Mail
adds at least $20 per shipment. All birds are
shipped on Monday except pheasants which
are shipped on Wednesday. They normally
arrive the first or second day after shipping.
Unless you request the GroGel supplement,
they are not shipped with food or water as
they absorb their yolk immediately before
hatching and this provides the necessary
nutrition for the first 60 hours.
Delivery Confirmation Number
Every shipment will be given a Delivery
Confirmation Number once we mail it. This
numbering system was designed to show a
package was received. It is not designed to
track your shipment. Normally the only
times and location recorded are the initial
mailing and the receipt by the customer.
You might be able to get more information
by going to www.usps.gov or giving the
number to your postmaster. You will need
to phone us after Monday to receive your
Delivery Confirmation Number.
Payment
Payment is required in advance before an
order is accepted. This can be done with
Visa, MasterCard, money order or check. We
do not ship COD. Prices may change at any
time.
Our Satisfaction Guarantee
This means that if you are not satisfied
with our service or products, write or phone
us and we will rectify it to your satisfaction.
What about deaths?
Rarely do we have problems with mortality.
If you do have any deaths, it is important
you count the live birds as extras are often
included. We never include extras in small
orders as we assume small numbers of birds
are being ordered as that is all you want. For
larger orders, we include extras if we have
plenty of the breed you are ordering. If the
extras do not cover the losses, however, you
must call us within 24 hours so we can
arrange a credit or replacement. Please save
the 3”x5” black
and white, postal
bar code label
from the box.
With this we can
determine their
route to you.
“My ducklings arrived on schedule, and
were in perfect condition. I just wanted
to say thank you and that your ordering/shipping
procedures are very proficient.
Thanks again.”
