innovative techniques and his original and imaginative subjects.
More than 100 photographs richly illustrate his work in this book, which
by artists such as Barlach, Dalí, Magritte, Fuchs, Jonssen and most of all, the
Mexican surrealist Remedios Varo. Ian is steeped in European cultural history
and has an overwhelming sense of the fatalistic repetition of history and the
inevitability of the archetypal errors of humanity endlessly repeating
themselves.
stool and bedpost, add decorative elements to furniture, add a 3-dimensional
form to a box, use pierce carving on a mirror & plate, and shape a smooth
pestle and mortar. The first book of it's kind, Carving on Turning originated
from a series of articles in Woodturning Magazine. Carvers will love this book
Chip Carving Nature
$12.95
In Craig Stevens's unique chipcarving style he creates images from nature by
using carved shapes and patterns rather than outlining the subject. With a
brush painter's sensitivity these carved shapes create a flow and movement
that imitates the simple but graceful patterns of the natural world. The initial
drawing creates the foundation of each carving. The book shares Craig's
method with other carvers, taking them step-by-step through the carving
process, beginning with an introduction to the tools and the wood. Every
carving step for the main project is included with a clear color photograph and
a concise description of the carving technique that is used. The pattterns are
Power Carving Fish, Birds & Penquins
$12.95
Literally a classroom-in-a-book, this engaging volume enables virtually
anyone with a band saw, rotary power tool and a few of the most common
cutting burrs to bring birds, fish, and even penguins to life beautifully!
Professional artist-woodcarver Gene Larson demonstrates in words and
pictures why he concentrates on simplicity of form, and how even a beginner
can use a block of wood the way a sculptor would use a piece of marble. With
a unique ability to reduce a complicated subject to its most basic components,
Gene provides step-by-step guidance (from the wood block up) on the
creation of shapes that have the look and "feel" of great works of art.
Beginning with the selection of the right wood, stressing the simplicity that
conveys and impression of so much more, and ending with a proper finish.
Gene shows you how to create works he calls "sketches in wood." You and
your friends will surely call them works of art.
Tom Wolfe carves Bottlespirits
CC-128 $13.46
Bottle spirits swirl around in bottles of all kinds. Sometimes they glimmer in
the glass. You can always hear them if a breeze or your breath passes over the
top of the bottle. But it's not too often that they show their faces. So how do
you know at first glance what's really inside a bottle? Once you decide what
kind of spirits are living in your bottles, Tom Wolfe will set you to work
carving charming faces to match. Using small pieces of scrap wood, basic
carving tools and paint, and not much time, Tom guides the reader through the
carving of a rebel soldier, a viking, and a laughing imp. The finished carvings
could be hung around a bottle, a neck, on a Christmas tree, or anywhere else
that could use a little personality! More than 200 color photos paired with stepby-step
instructions demonstrate the process, and a full-color gallery of 20
different carved bottle spirits that would stimulate anyone's imagination. Ideal
for both the novice or more experienced carver, this book explores Tom's
basic approach to carving a face and the countless possibilities, simple or
intricate, that follow.
Woodburning with Cheryl Dow I
$14.95
Cheryl Dow’s first book includes 14 different patterns: Raccoon, Wolf (full
body), Squirrel, Owl, Barn Scene, Lighthouse, Fox & Barn (cover, shown
here), Merganser, Pintail, Chickadee, Butterfly, Fawn, Moose, and her now
famous "Wolf Head". Again, there are three versions of each pattern, complete
with detailed instructions.
The preface and instructions are pretty much the same (outstanding) for both
books. Although this book does not have a calligraphy table, Cheryl does give
some directions, and what materials you'll need, on how to use transparent oils
to colors your pyrography.
After using two other top selling brands, Cheryl now uses the Optima 1 wood
burner exclusively; and recommends it to all of her students. Her favorite
Optima pens, used throughout both of these books are the PH12 (small skew
w/ rounded heel), and the PH18 (Spear Point Shader). Be sure to have both of
these pens when purchasing one of her books. A Heavy Duty cord is also
recommended for most types of flat work pyrography.
Woodburning with Cheryl Dow II
$14.95
An award winning artist and teacher, Cheryl Dow has just released her latest
book on flat work wildlife pyrography techniques. The cover, shown here, is
an example of her outstanding work.
If your wanting to learn how to do flat work pyrography, you can’t find better
books on teaching this subject. This newest book is an addition her previous
published works, with some new techniques and new patterns.
Ten patterns are included in this book which include: Loon (w/baby), Mouse,
Raccoons, Lynx, Chipmunk, Frog, Barn, Heron (cover), Deer, and a Wolf
pattern.
Also included is a calligraphy table, showing letters, technique, and flow lines.
Although Cheryl uses the #12 pen to do her calligraphy, I recommend using a
#16 or #8 pen (depending on letter sizes) as it is a bit easier to do.
A finished, and flow line pattern are included with each outline pattern. So
you can see what it should look like, and which way to burn lines/shading.
Each pattern also includes detailed instructions, and any technique not covered
in the preface.
Woodburning with Cheryl Dow III
$14.95
This book is for more advanced pyrographers, that have had more experience
and/or have gone through at least one of her first two books.
Although the instructions in the front of book are very similar, including an
extra page on using the #13 shader pen for doing certain things, there is no
individual text for each pattern. The majority of larger patterns don't include a
"flow line" version (just a finished pattern, and outline pattern).
(Note, the patterns with an asterisks "*" by them, do have a flow line pattern
included.)
The twelve large patterns are Iris, Naptime* (baby squirrel sleeping), Peony
Singer (sitting on a flowers stem), Ship Ahoy (sail ship with lighthouse in
background), Lighthouse landing, Little Gossip (two song birds on a
flowering branch, facing), Eagle (looking over shoulder, standing on branch),
Late Fall Debate (two patterns of Jay on a branch), Mama Cougar* (with
cubs), Trillium Deer* (cover), Laying Wolves* (two, laying on a rock).
In addition to her excellent large patterns, Cheryl has also included several
(about 36) small outline patterns of various wildlife, scenes, etc....
Woodburning with Cheryl Dow IV
$14.95
This book is for more advanced pyrographers, that have had more experience
and/or have gone through at least one of her first two books.
The instructions in this newest book are very similar to her previous books,
but she does add a few more pages, and introduces two more pen tips that she
has found very useful (the new #9m Micro writing tip, and the versatile new
"Dagger Shader").
The patterns in this book (a whooping 51 of them) are a bit smaller than in
previous books (two per page), as the inspiration for this book came from the
IAPA pyrography listserver quilt project. Also, none of the patterns in this
book contain "flow line" patterns (only a finished, and an outline pattern), as
this book is meant for more advanced pyrographers.
Here are the patterns, as they appear in the book. Each pattern takes up half a
page, except the owl at the very end.
This handy little draw knive was developed for fan carving but works great
for skinning bark and roughing-off corners. Fits nicely into the tool box.
Flexcut - 5" Draw Knife
KNF-105 $37.76
Our flexible draw knife has 5 inches of workable edge, designed to flex
around contours where large amounts of stock need to be removed quickly.
The tool can be flexed to accommodate concave or convex surfaces. Cuts can
be made that conform more closely to the finished shape, taking less time to
sand or scrape. The curved edge gives a skew-like cutting action for a low
resistance cut. This tool works great for carving chair legs, hollowing chair
bottoms or quickly roughing-out decoys.
Kolrosing Knife
$24.95
Kolrosing is a little known but very beautiful craft having Scandinavian
roots - often mirroring intricate rosemaling patterns. It has all kinds of
untapped possibilities from decorating spoons, carvings, furniture etc., or
making a picture. Draw with the knife just like you would a pencil (no
shaving is removed). For tight turns and extra fine control the cut is quite
shallow, levering the tool away from you with the opposite hands' thumb
against the rounded back of the blade. Then take a pinch of extra finely
ground coffee, (powder consistency) rub it into the carved area, sand away all
excess coffee, apply finish, and voila! Some people eventually gain enough
control to even sign their name. (Be sure to check out the VHS/DVD devoted
to kolrosing). Blade is approx. 5/8" long.
he detail knife has a back-angled, hollow ground polished edge, and a very
sharp point. The steel is the same finely hardened and tempered Swedish high
carbon tool steel as the Harley knife. The handle is shorter than the kolrosing
knife so it can be held either like a pen or in the palm. We hand-turn each
handle from our stash of beautiful hardwoods - so each handle is an
individual. Comes with a wooden sheath. Blade is approx. 3/4".
Woodburning
Product Name: CTVWC#: Price:
Optima #1 HD Large Skew (PH1) WB-008 $19.95
Good for running quill lines, and burning larger feathers (like on life sized
geese or eagle feathers). The longer blade burns long even lines, but turning
radius is very limited.
Optima #10 Small Skew - STD (PS10)
Great for the miniature carver or anyone that needs to do small fine detailed
work.
Optima #11 HD Med Skew (PH11)
$19.95
WB-031 $19.95
A little smaller than the Large Skew (1), has many of the same uses. Has a
better turning radius & is stronger than the Large Skew (1).
Optima #11 STD Med Skew (PF11)
WB-030 $19.95
A little smaller than the Large Skew (1), has many of the same uses. Has a
better turning radius & is stronger than the Large Skew (1).
Optima #12 HD Rounded Skew (PH12)
WB-033 $19.95
Like the the small skew, but can turn a corner real easily. This is the most
popular pen that we sell. Get this one and the #18 when ordering one of the
Cheryl Dow books!
Optima #12 Micro Round Skew (PH12S)
Optima #12 STD Rounded Skew (PS12)
WB-055 $19.95
WB-032 $19.95
Available now. An even smaller version of the ever popular number twelve
pen tip. Song bird carvers will really like this pen, especially in the ultra fine
version (fine pens tend to be even smaller than the HD ones shown).
Available in extended version.
Optima #13M HD Scale/Shader (PH13)
WB-038 $19.95
What originally started out as a Cheryl Dow design for flat work pyrography,
was changed slightly via Scott Clinton to become a fish scale pen also. This
tip is available in small, medium, or large sizes. The medium size (Shown
here) is probably the most versatile for most carvers and flat work
pyrographers.
Optima #14HD RH Feather Edger Guge
WB-041 $19.95
This pen design is from Bob Guge. Anyone who has taken a class from him
has probably made one. Great for burning in primary's, or anywhere you
would otherwise use a pen to burnish or depress wood. Instead of depressing
and moving the pen for each area along a line "like you would do with other
pens", this pen is designed to act like a ski. Just put it at the start of your
feather edge, and follow it. Saves you a lot of time. I recommend getting this
one in the Heavy Duty Style, as it will stand up to the rigors of burnishing
with a pen of this design.
Optima #15 HD LH Feather Edger Bent (
Optima #17 HD Hair Burning Pen (PH17 WB-046 $19.95
This tip is used to make hair on your caricature or mammal carvings, instead
of using a tear-drop shaped dremel bit, or micro-V hand gouge. Obviously,
you may still need these other tools for wider furrows, but this pen will make
short work of the medium to finer sized hairs on your carvings (up to 1mm
wide). This tip is only available in heavy duty style, as its design requires a
thicker tip wire. It can also be used to do fine hair/feather work, where you
can adjust the width and depth of a line by just pressing harder (rather than
increasing your heat settings). As this pen tip has a limited "choke point" in it,
it may tend to get more heat to the pen body.
Optima #18 HD Spear Point shader (PH1
WB-049 $19.95
This new shader looks a lot like the #5 spear point, but has squared off edges
(not sharpened), and it is bent at a 45 degree angle for shading. Great for
when you need to shade an area that's in a tight spot.
Optima #2 HD Sm Round (PH2)
Good for concave areas such as under necks. Good for not leaving a
depression from the point. Can also be used for "stippling".
Optima #2 STD Sm Round (PF2)
Good for concave areas such as under necks. Good for not leaving a
depression from the point. Can also be used for "stippling".
Optima #3 HD Large Round (P3HD)
Same as small round, just a bit larger diameter.
Optima #3 STD Large Round (PF3)
Optima #6 Chisel Tip - Std - PS6
Optima #6 Chisel Tip HD (PH6)
Some carvers prefer this for running quill lines.
Optima #9 HD Mod Writing Tip (PH9M)
$19.95
$19.95
WB-027 $19.95
Used for writing your name on your carvings. As there is no "choke point" in
the tip, it does tend to heat up the pen body more than most pens.
Optima #9 HD Mod Writing Tip Small (P
$19.95
Very similar to the standard #9, but has the end of the tip ground
symmetrically, and the end is perfectly round. This is a good choice when
you need it for more than just signing your work like for "Pointillism" or
drawing, and the "choke point" created at the end of the tip also keeps the pen
body much cooler for much longer than the standard #9 pen does. The end of
the tip for the 9M pen is about 0.040" in diameter (1mm), and about 0.030"
(3/4mm) diameter for the 9MS pen. Look at the #19 pens if you want
something similar but bigger.
Optima #9PP Pin Point Tip
$19.95
Another variation of the #9 & 9M, but it has been ground so that it comes to a
sharp point. Good for when you need to do very fine dots or fine surface
lines. It is sharp, so you may need to sandpaper the tip down a little bit to
your liking.
