Lesson 18

Do you know why I make more than
the average Network Marketer?
Most of the time, I'm working
when they are doing something
else. Pretty simple stuff.
When all compensation becomes
performance based, people
who hold traditional jobs will learn
what the best Network Marketers
already know – it takes real effort to
be successful.
I talk to a lot of people about network
marketing. I talk to people who are
thinking about getting involved and I
talk to a lot who are already involved
and wanting to know what they
can do to improve their businesses.
Without fail, the question I am most
often asked is, “What is the secret to
making a lot of money in this business?”
My answer is the same for all
of them: hard work. Work your butt
off. Work your face off. Do it right,
and there is nothing that can keep
you from getting what you want.
This might seem to fly in the face of
what I have been saying about having
the lifestyle you want without the
obligations that come with a straight
job. Believe me, there is a huge difference.
Look at what “working your
butt off” means in a traditional job.
It means going in early and staying
late. It means working weekends
and nights to get through the tasks
you have had to push aside while you
Go Pro Academy
attend to group emails and attend
status meetings. It means missing
things like get-togethers with friends
and the occasional elementary school
play because you have a deadline
that just can’t be missed.
Now, imagine that all your hard work
actually went toward achieving what
you want out of life rather than keeping
some corporate machine running
smoothly. As I said before, too many
people consider “work” to be a place
you go instead of something you
do. In network marketing, the work
you put in today will pay off for you
tomorrow, the next day and the day
after that. You get back what you put
in, but unlike other businesses, the
reward continues to repeat and grow.
Skeptics of network marketing
always point to the image of the
big-money-making Multi-Level
Marketer as a false promise of
a business that is just out to get
their enrollment fee. And, I will
admit, too many network marketing
companies rely too much
on parading wealth in front of
prospective new recruits as a way
to cultivate interest in the business.
What the skeptics fail to do, though,
is connect the dots between the
introduction to a network marketing
opportunity and that “finish line,”
the image of the millionaire who is
free to experience the best life has
to offer.
Work your butt off. Work your face off.
Do it right, and there is nothing that can
keep you from getting what you want.
As I have said, I tell new Network
Marketers to expect to put in five
years of honest, hard work before
they have the skills and the foundation
that might ever put them in
the league of the big earners. The
millionaire image isn’t a false one,
but I think more businesses should
spend the time to tell the whole
story. Those success stories that
you hear from the deck of a huge
sailboat or the pool of an expensive
3 www.GoProMentoring.com
house? Those are real. I know
many of the people they interview
for the recruitment materials. And I
can tell you that without exception,
each of the success stories you will
ever see is built on years of hard
work. Years of hustle.
I have a friend named Jeff Roberti
who has made more than $62 million
over the course of twenty years in
network marketing. And based on
the work he has done over time,
that number continues to grow. He
enjoys the kind of lifestyle people
dream about, a lifestyle that includes
the time freedom and financial
resources to contribute to a long
list of philanthropic causes that are
important to him.
Jeff could be the poster boy for the
kind of recruiting materials that the
skeptics point to as false promises.
But talk to Jeff and he will tell you
that if you just look at all he has and
all he earns today, you are missing
the biggest part of his story – what it
took to get to where he is.
When Jeff started out, he was, by his
own admission, green. Now, some
people get frustrated at this point,
realizing they are in unfamiliar territory
without the skills and knowledge
that will allow them to be successful.
Not Jeff. Jeff instead met the
challenge head on. He took the time
to learn the skills and acquire the
knowledge, but he also did something
remarkable. Jeff saw that in
network marketing hard work could
compensate for any deficiencies in
ability. He saw what it would take to
be good at this business and he met
the challenge head on.
Jeff began making calls, telling his
story and sharing his belief with anyone
who would listen. In fact, Jeff
made 700-1,000 phone calls a week.
And he did this for an entire year
Go Pro Academy
– his first year – until his business
was where he thought it should be.
I’m sure there were frustrating moments
along the way during that year,
and I’m sure that there were times
when Jeff doubted that he was ever
going to reach the level of success he
saw for himself. But Jeff answered
doubt with hustle, and twenty years
later he has exceeded even his own
high expectations.
Hard work is the magic bullet, the
secret sauce, and the missing link
when it comes to success in my
business. But when you realize that
the hustle you put in each day will
pay off for you (not some corporation)
down the road, it casts the
concept of hard work in a whole
new light. Do you have to make
700-1,000 calls per week to be successful
in network marketing? No.
But I will tell you this, if you put
in that kind of effort you can end
up living the lifestyle that Jeff and
dozens of others I know enjoy.
Take heart. If you are new to network
marketing you already possess
the one thing that will make the difference
between success and failure.
You possess a drive to make your
life better and your finances more
secure. Let that be your motivation
for putting in the effort. People tend
to blame lack of skill, bad luck or bad
timing for failure to succeed in business
and in life. But I will tell you,
hard work will compensate for any
of these things. This is true in life
and it is particularly true in network
marketing. If you want success, go
after it. If you go after it you will
succeed. And this promise is what
makes network marketing unlike any
other business on the planet—anyone
willing to hustle can get to a place
where they can realize their dreams.
All it takes is hustle.
Use and love your product.
Although you must focus on enrolling others in the
opportunity in order to build a large network, a large
portion of your credibility and integrity in doing so
will be your passion for your products. The more you
love them, the more you will talk about them and the
more your whole network will use and sell them.
Own the concept of Network Marketing.
Most prospects have a strong opinion about this
concept. They own their perception of what it is.
They have conviction about it. If you are weak on
your ownership of Network Marketing they will
influence you versus you influencing them. One too
many times of them influencing you and you are out
of the game. You must have some successes – and
have them quickly – to shore up your confidence.
Study everything you can find on exactly how and
why Network Marketing is an extraordinary wealthbuilding
concept. Study those who have done it.
Master their stories and their strategies.
Learn to believe that everyone is a prospect.
They don’t think they are. They are probably not
even looking for anything. But ask yourself this
question: If everyone knew what you knew, would
they get involved? The answer is: Of course. So what
is missing? They just don’t know about it. What if
you could let them peek into your mind and into
your heart to see it how you see it? Would they get
involved? Yes, most of them would, and the ones who
would not would pass in a way that championed you
(not rejected you) and appreciated you for offering.
Ask easy curiosity questions.
The more you know about your prospects, the easier
it is for you to design an offer they will not choose to
refuse. Find out what is important to people. What do
they love? What do they want more of in life? What
do they want less of? Start with where they live (if
you don’t know). What do they like about it? What
don’t they like about it? Where would they live if
they could move? What is holding them back? Ask
about their work. How long have they been doing it?
What do they like and dislike about it? What is holding
them back from doing something they love?
Ask them to imagine.
Walt Disney was probably the last one to inspire
them to imagine. It is our ability to imagine something
that is not actually present in our lives that
allows us to become inspired. Imagining a more
peaceful, fun-filled, loving, abundant life changes our
body chemistry immediately, whether we want it to
or not. Imagining something specific that we like and
don’t now have gives us a positive energy (motivation)
to act; to choose to prioritize, to change and to
embrace something like a new business that just five
minutes ago we would have sworn we would never
do. Ask them to imagine getting a check for $1,000
5 www.GoProMentoring.com
(or whatever amount you have
learned will motivate them) every
month like clockwork.
Show them the way.
Once someone is motivated to
move, they will take direction. Why
not? Your wisdom, experience and
position in the organization is what
they need to get what they want.
Take advantage of your posture
and show them exactly what they
need to do. Use examples people
who they know who can do well.
Show them their plan. Show them
their money. Show them what they
must do to get their money. If you
don’t show them, they will not do
what they need to do and you have
wasted their time and yours.
Wait for no man or woman.
Make unreasonable requests. This
will sort out who will work with
you and who will not. You must
ask people to do what must be
done. Stretch them. Give them the
opportunity to succeed or fail out
of choice versus merely decaying
over time right in front of you.
Some people would rather whine
than work. They would rather tell
stories than succeed. They would
rather keep you waiting on them as
they “get around to it.” These are
the Vampires of Network Marketing.
They will suck the life out of
you with their procrastination and
excuses and brilliant ability to find
ways for things not to work. It is
much easier for them to justify
their commitment to mediocrity
if you stay down with them. Cast
them off. And if they happen to be
friends and family, keep them as
such—and out of your business.
Manage your motivation.
Motivation is the secret to success.
When you are on fire about
Go Pro Academy
the inevitability of your quest you
will be enthusiastic, courageous,
energetic, persistent and creative.
These are the fundamentals of getting
things done and attracting the
things you need. When you are in a
funk, you repel what you need and
you do just the opposite actions
from what you need to be doing.
When you are on fire success is
easy, natural and fun. You get
lucky and stay lucky.
Get your car over the hill.
There is a lot of inertia in launching
a network. The analogy is like
pushing a car up a hill. It takes proportionally
far more energy just to
get it rolling than at any other time,
and it takes a continued Herculean
effort to keep it going uphill. And
what happens if you stop to rest?
Right, you get run over and have to
start over. And what happens when
you stay after it and do whatever it
takes to get to the top of the hill?
Right, it starts rolling on its own
and it would take another Herculean
effort just to stop it.
Lead like your life depended
on it.
And the rest of your life—the part
you may have been missing up to
now—does depend on it, too. In
a successful Network Marketing
career, first comes massive action
and development, then comes massive
money and then comes … Life
Beyond Money. A life where you
are present to those you love; life
with the freedom to do what you
want, where you want, with whom
you want and the peace of knowing
that you have crested the hill and
although there will still be bumps
in your road you are on the good
slope. Network Marketing is like
herding cats. Your job is to inspire
a whole bunch of people to do
something they are not normally
inclined to do on their own and
keep them doing it—thousands of
them. Imagine herding thousands
of cats to the Promised Land. You
would need to be one heck of a
trail boss yourself, and you would
also need a lot of good hands to
help you. Your leadership and your
ability to inspire and develop it in
others will determine how far you
go and how self-sustaining it is
when you get there.
Network Marketing is a brilliant
career choice whether you choose
it at the age of 20, 40 or 80. Done
smartly, you can be done in Four
Years and then you get to design your
