1: Lessons from effective classroom practice<br />
cal world. <strong>Physics</strong> was <strong>the</strong>n more likely to be viewed as personally<br />
relevant and not sterile. The key appeared to be provid<strong>in</strong>g<br />
a rationale for <strong>the</strong> content ra<strong>the</strong>r than adjust<strong>in</strong>g it to<br />
meet <strong>the</strong> perceived <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>of</strong> girls.<br />
At <strong>the</strong> start <strong>of</strong> a new topic on waves, pupils, <strong>in</strong> groups,<br />
are asked to th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>of</strong> as many different k<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> waves as<br />
<strong>the</strong>y can. They are <strong>the</strong>n asked to discuss what <strong>the</strong>se have<br />
<strong>in</strong> common that makes <strong>the</strong>m all waves and <strong>the</strong>n what<br />
properties make <strong>the</strong> different types useful to us. Pupils<br />
are <strong>the</strong>n able to see <strong>the</strong> reason for study<strong>in</strong>g waves and<br />
how this could be useful.<br />
Messages for practice<br />
● Try to give pupils a glimpse <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> “big picture” by<br />
re<strong>in</strong>forc<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>ks between topics, key ideas and<br />
applications wherever possible.<br />
● Try tackl<strong>in</strong>g first applications and <strong>the</strong>n pr<strong>in</strong>ciples so<br />
that <strong>the</strong> rationale for study<strong>in</strong>g a topic is clear<br />
throughout.<br />
● Supplement standard texts with o<strong>the</strong>r read<strong>in</strong>g<br />
material, such as articles or newspaper cutt<strong>in</strong>gs, to<br />
<strong>in</strong>troduce <strong>the</strong> social relevance <strong>of</strong> physics.<br />
● Use <strong>the</strong> Internet to <strong>in</strong>troduce contemporary<br />
applications <strong>of</strong> physics.<br />
