TREND WATCH
BY MIAMI SPORTS STAFF
The topic of this month’s trend
watch is ...well, us! That’s right,
we are rolling out some cutting
edge technology for our readers.
Beginning with this issue, Miami
Sports Magazine is published in
multiple platforms- print, interactive
and full multimedia.
Our popular print version features
scanable QR Codes. Using
a Smart Phone readers can scan
codes associated with photos in
our stories. This will link to video
clips of the image. In a sense our
print version is interactive.
Our true digital interactive version
version is designed for PC and all
mobile devices.
Perhaps the most exciting new
product is our multimedia version
of the magazine. This e-mag
will have all of the video embedded
within, making it perfect for
tablets. This version will basically
blur the lines between television
and magazines.
In addition to the increased publishing
platforms, we are also
launching our website. Our site
will feature user provided content,
news updates and live broadcasts!
brave new world.
We suggest you use the QR Code
found here to test your APP. It is
important to note, all QR Code
scanner APPS are not created
equally. If you have difficulties
scanning, get a new APP.
With that said we will stop geeking
out and get our focus back on
outdoor sports.
Lubo’s Place
After a yearlong renovation of the
beaches along the Rickenbacker
Causeway in Miami, the beaches
have reopened. Re-nourished
beaches, newly planted palm trees
and spacious parking now greet visitors.
Gone are the “let’s park our
truck on the beach and drink beer
crowd”.
The beaches have been returned to
the crowd that enjoys being active
in the outdoors. Catamaran sailing,
windsurfing, stand up paddleboarding
and cycling opportunities are
available from several vendors
located on the beaches between the
tollbooth and the Miami Seaquarium.
We recently stopped by to visit a
friend of MSM. Lubo has a SUP
and bike rental concession located
just before the Miami Seaquarium.
Actually “rental concession” doesn’t
do it justice. It is more like a miniresort.
With lounges, umbrellas and
white sand beaches awaiting those
who want to chill, and three trailers
stocked with sports toys for those
who prefer to get their sport on- Lubo’s
Place is your own ClubMed.
On our visit we joined in with a
SUP group celebrating a birthday.
On our return Lubo popped some
chilled bubbly. The perfect postsport
recovery drink!
PUBLIC LAND
South Florida Parks
Amelia Earhart Park
(305) 685-8389
401 East 65 Street
Hialeah (Miami), Florida
Kayaking, stand up paddle boarding
(SUP), Mountain Biking, Tail Running,
and In-Line Skating.
Amelia Earhart Park now
occupies what was once home
to the U.S. Navy’s Air Station
Miami—a large plot of land
surrounded by chain link and
barbed wire fencing complete
with “no trespassing” signs.
Eventually, the U.S. Government
donated a large portion of its
undeveloped land to Dade
County for specific use as a
regional park. 30 years later,
the weed and trash-filled land
was finally opened as Amelia
Earhart Regional Park with a
myriad of activities for the sports
enthusiast.
The clear blue water of the
91-acre lake at Amelia Earhart
Park is an ideal place to enjoy
a day of water sports. The park
also offers champion coaching
for wakeboarding, waterskiing,
wake surfing, knee boarding
and barefoot skiing (www.
miamiwakeboardcablecomplex.
com) for those who really want
to learn a new sport. This is
Miami Dade County’s Extreme
Sports Park.
Amelia Earhart is home to one
of South Florida’s top bike trails
for riders of all levels. The 7 to
8-mile trails include both smooth,
well-maintained single-tracks
and fire road trails with climbs
and down hills complete with
banked corners for speed freaks.
An advanced section of the trail
has BMX-style jumps for more
experienced riders.
Bill Baggs Cape Florida State
Park is the home of a historic
lighthouse built in 1825 and
reconstructed in 1846, and is
the oldest standing structure in
Miami-Dade County. This park
boasts more than one mile of
sandy Atlantic beachfront making
it the perfect place for kayaking,
SUP or just soaking up the sun.
The park has a paved path
approximately 1.5-miles long and
unpaved service roads for easy
biking/hiking. Visitors can easily
ride/hike a few miles in a loop
by routing through the various
paths and dirt roads. Some of the
trails lead you beneath the trees
and through mangrove wetlands
while others offer magnificent
views of Biscayne Bay. Eagle
ray and manatee sightings are not
unusual.
This park is named after the late
Broward High School. He later
played college football and was
12 • MAY/JUNE 2011
recruited to play professional
football with the Chicago Bears.
However, Brian only played four
seasons before falling victim to
cancer. Today, the 180-acre park
bearing his name is one of the
premier playgrounds in South
Florida.
Brian Piccolo Park is a dreamcome-true
for sports enthusiasts
complete with a 333.3-meter
Velodrome cycling track and
200-meter banked track for inline
skating. The park also boasts
one of the largest skate parks
Matheson Hammock Park,
located on Biscayne Bay, is
a local favorite with a very
unusual feature—a man-made
atoll pool—which is naturally
flushed with the tidal movement
of Biscayne Bay. Beautiful
waterside views abound on
its beautiful sandy beach with
protected swimming due to a
circle of coral rock that allows
saltwater to flow in and out.
The park houses a full-service
marina where visitors can dock
their boats, sail with the pros at
the Castle Harbor Sailing School
and watch sailing races every
Saturday.
The waters off Matheson
windsurfing, kite surfing because
the water is relatively shallow
making launching easy. Nearby
The Reluctant Kayaker
BY MARC JACOBSON
Overcoming Adversity
As I am sure you have surmised
from my previous articles, I really
don’t consider myself an athlete.
I’m certainly no marathon runner
or triathlete. Like most people,
I engage in activities until I am
tired or something hurts. Then it’s
Miller and TV time! The “playing
through the pain” concept is
nothing I have ever embraced.
Sometimes, however you have
no choice. I first dealt with that
concept in the Army when I went
through basic infantry training. Of
course, I was 21 years old and my
only recourse for not dealing with
it was court martial or suicide. So
I dealt with it. In many ways it
was enlightening as prior to this I
thought “second wind” referred to
an orchestra seating chart. Boy, did
I find out differently.
Another reason a person has to
push beyond their self-imposed
limits of fatigue and pain is if you
have a serious injury that involves
a lot of rehab therapy to regain
your former physical status. This
was my second bout with “playing
through the pain” except now I
am 68 years old. In many ways it
was as enlightening as my Army
experience mixed with liberal
does of depression. I will briefly
describe what happened to me.
In Oct. of ’09 I had an accident
which resulted in both of my
quadriceps muscles tearing away
from my knees. These muscles,
as most of you know are the
PADDLE SPORTS
large muscles in front of your
legs between the knee and the
hip. Without these muscles, you
cannot walk. I was admitted to
the hospital, had MRI’s done, and
seen by my orthopedic surgeon the
following day. The prognosis: I
probably wouldn’t walk again and
even if my some miracle I did, I
would always need a cane. How’s
that for a life changing event! I
said to the Doctor “You give me
the wheels and I’ll drive the car”.
Trust me, I sounded more positive
than I actually felt. But, like the
Army, I was going to focus and
give it 110%. I was operated on
2 days later and the torn muscles
were reattached through holes
drilled in my Patella’s. The
muscles were also shortened
because they were so badly torn.
When I woke up after surgery,
both knees were tightly bandaged
and each leg was in a steel cast
that extended from my hips to
my ankle. This was, obviously,
to prevent any movement during
the expected 8 week healing
process. The surgery went well but
obviously, the proof of the pudding
would be when the wounds healed
and they put me on my legs for the
first time.
Now, you have to understand that
I had never been an inpatient in
a hospital before. Sure, I would
visit people in the hospital and
watched a lot of hospital shows
on TV. Maybe that’s where I got
my expectation spotlessly clean
rooms filled with state-of-the-art
equipment manned by competent,
caring care givers. Boy was I
wrong. I found not particularly
clean rooms with old equipment
and a staff, with some exceptions,
pretty much indifferent. Of course
since I could not walk or use a
wheelchair, I was totally dependent
on the staff for everything. Food,
water, bathroom, etc. Just as an
aside, various comedians make fun
funny about it. I did discover,
however, that the Kosher food
was better than the regular fare.
Of course, I had to hum Yiddish
each time I was served but it sure
beat the alternative. Thank God for
supplements from my wife! After
about 4 days I was transferred to
an in-patient rehab center for the
next phase of my ordeal. I am out
of space for this column but will
continue in the next issue. This is
when the hard part starts.
SURVIVAL
survival tips’from hank
Chlorine
Contaminated drinking water is real concern and can cause major
complications to the unwary. Although there are many very good methods
available out there to treat and filter water one very simple, tried and true
method, is to use chlorine. That’s standard, unscented household bleach. It
only takes 2 drops to treat a quart of clear water. For murky or discolored
water a safe bet is to double that to 4 drops. You simply add the recommended
drops, mix it by slowly rotating the container back and forth and wait at
least 30 minutes before drinking. Be sure to sniff the water and make sure
you can detect a slight odor of chlorine. If you don’t smell chlorine the safe
thing to do is add another dose and try the sniff test again before drinking.
Magnesium Fire Starter Bars
Do not count on always being able to easily shave and collect that little
pile of magnesium shavings. This is especially true when you find
yourself in dire straights, cold and wet in a freezing rain, the wind is
howling and you desperately need that fire. My advise, and practice by
the way, is to always have a small pile of magnesium shavings stowed
in my Personal Survival Kit, ready for immediate use. I carry mine in
a small 2 inch x 2 inch zip lock bag so that I can see the contents plus
the sealed bag keeps the shavings dry. I’d recommend carrying at least
a tablespoon of shavings ready to use. When I use up that pile, the very
first chance I get, I’ll refill it and have it ready for the next – “got to get
that fire going now” situation. Remember folks – being prepared is the
key to survival.
Magnifying Lens
Being somewhat on the “ always prepared” side I like to carry something
I can use to start a fire with me at all times. One item that I’ve found,
and started several fires with, is one of those plastic credit card size
magnifying lens. You can get them at any Wal-Mart for about 6 bucks. I
just stick it my wallet along with my credit cards and I’ve got a fire starter
with me. The down side of course is that the sun must be shining. It has
other uses obviously: reading fine print, picking splinters and spines out
of your skin, threading a needle etc.
Paracord
Carry a minimum of 20 feet of paracord whenever you head outdoors.
Some different ways to make sure you always have paracord at hand are
to replace your shoelaces with 550 cord, wrap your knife handle with
cord, wrap your water bottle or whatever you normally carry. Or – you
could just carry a 20 foot hank in your backpack, ready for immediate
use.
Multi-use Tool
I’m particularly fond of and always looking for survival tools that serve
more than one purpose. One of the best I’ve found, and the one I’ve
been carrying for a number of years now, is the Survivo II, 5 in 1. This
simple 1 oz. tool has a Compass, Signal Mirror, Waterproof Match Case,
Whistle, and Fire Starting Striker all in a pocket size package. It’s made
of bright orange/red plastic so you can’t misplace it and comes with a
lanyard to wear around your neck ( extra small line). It’s available from
the Campmor catalog or their website for about $4.00 and can sometimes
be found at Sports Authority, Gander Mountain, Bass Pro etc. Well worth
the money folks.
Tender
Just like that rule of carrying a minimum of 3 fire starting devices make
sure you have at least 3 very reliable tinders. I highly recommend these 3
items: 1- cotton balls soaked in petroleum jelly, 2- alcohol swaps in blister
packs, and 3- WetFire ( or similar) fire starting tinder. Each of these items
has multiple uses, they work even when wet, they pack very small and
they will work with either of your three fire starting tools.
Stormproof Matches
If any of you are carrying and depending on standard strike anywhere
matches as one of your three fire starting options I encourage you to
reconsider. Whether waterproofed or not these matches are VERY
undependable and much more likely to just crumple than light. As a
demonstration I routinely have my students try to strike one of these
matches on something found in the field,: on a rock, on their knife, on a
tree stump, anything commonly found in the woods, and to date, not one
has worked. I’m not sure where that strike anywhere idea came from
but –don’t bet your life on it. The only matches I now recommend are
the “Stormproof Matches” made by Industrial Revolution. They are not
strike anywhere but each box comes with two extra strikers in addition to
the ones on each side of the box.. When ignited the tip burns for a full 15
seconds before it reaches the wood part of the match, that’s compared to
maybe 2 seconds with a regular match and they are darn near windproof(
the best I’ve ever found) and very waterproof. I bought some at
Gander Mountain in the camping section but I’m sure they are available
elsewhere.
Remember to always: Hope for the Best but Prepare for the Worst!
ONE BREATH
BY CARLOS ALONSO
A PERFECT DAY
Sometimes, you just know! You
plan a spearfishing trip and all the
intangibles fall into place. The
weather behaves, the sea is cement
flat, and the visibility is 50
to 60 feet.
The plan was simple. Four
members of the Broward
Longfins Spearfishing
Club were meeting at the
Coconut Grove boat ramp
at 0700 hrs on a beautiful
Saturday in March. Our
destination: the reefs South
of Fowey Lighthouse and
East of Elliot Key.
I left my house and drove
to the Hollywood Blvd.
Tri-Rail parking lot, where
Roberto Ramos awaited
my arrival. Roberto is a
Long fins club member that
has qualified for the 2011
U.S. National spearfishing
competition. We quickly
loaded his gear in the back
of my Chevy truck. The
drive to the marina is filled with
anticipation and promise. The
familiar routine is played out
among all spearfishermen. What
gun are you using? Float or
reel? You think it’s too warm
for the wetsuit? I don’t care if I
shoot anything I’m just glad to be
diving! We arrived at the boat
ramp to find Richi Davalos and
Deivy Fernandez launching the
21ft Chris Craft.
Mishka’s c.d. “ Above the Bones”
played in the background as we
navigated the maze of moored
yachts and sailboats in the
channel. The cool air was still
and the ocean a vibrant royal blue.
We arrived at the first reef which
was 30 ft. deep with extensive
structures: deep caves and large
outcropping supported a plethora
of marine life. I prefer diving
these shallower reefs first to allow
for the mammalian dive reflex.
Once I am warmed up I proceed to
the deeper reefs.
It didn’t take long for Richi
SUBSURFACE
to surface with two nice male
Hogfish. Before he could get
back in the water Roberto surfaced
with a large Mutton snapper and
Triggerfish. Deivy surfaced with
a Hogfish and a lobster. On my
dive I grabbed a large lobster from
underneath a ledge. I spotted a
large male green turtle gliding
effortlessly as he scanned the
reef. I swam alongside and
watched its grace and power.
Whenever I spot one of theses
majestic creatures, I always have a
spectacular day like a premonition
or a sign.
The reefs looked healthy and alive
with marine life. The large rock
structures were covered with large
sea fans and vegetation. The sand
gaps between the rocks create
channels that hold hogfish and
other snappers. In one of these
channels I spotted a large Goliath
grouper lying listlessly against a
16 • MAY/JUNE 2011
ledge. I swam towards him and
within a body length distance it
released several strong guttural
soundings that vibrated the
water. This defense mechanism
was repeated several times and
with increasing intensity. The
shock waves were powerful
and effective. It calmly swam
away confident I had received its
warnings.
With several fish
harvested, we decided
to move South, in an
effort to avoid excessive
pressure and to find
deeper water. We agreed
to dive in a 60 to 70 foot
range, with the hope of
finding bigger fish. Due
to the strong current, a
drift dive was our only
option. Richi agreed to
stay with the boat while
Deivy, Roberto and I
dove. I spent several
minutes on the surface
breathing up and slowing
my heart rate. On my
first approach I spotted
3 large Mutton snappers
at 40 feet. I followed
the largest one along the
bottom of the reef in 65
feet of water. It came to a
stop at the edge of the reef where
the sand started. I braced myself
against a rock with my left hand
while I eased my gun forward
with my right. I could feel the
current trying to push me forward.
I flattened my fins against the
bottom and allowed the currents
pressure to wedge me into the reef.
The Mutton was 10 feet ahead. I
had to be patient and wait for a
perfect lateral shot.
CONTINUED

It sensed my presence and turned
its body slightly to look for me. I
fired my Mako 110cm spear-gun
and watched the spear hit its mark
and the fish was dispatched with
one shot. The only struggle on
the ascent was the weight of the
fish.
Once on the boat I marked my fish
with a slit to the tail and placed
it in the cooler with the rest. It is
common practice to distinguish
one’s catch from the others with
such a mark. Meanwhile Roberto
found two large Mutton and Deivy
another.
The sun was nearing the horizon
and lost its intensity. As the
orange hue faded in the distance
we headed north for shallower
another drift dive with Deivy
at the helm. We drifted North
towards Fowey Lighthouse.
The reef was 40 feet below. I
dispatched two Hogs and another
lobster while Richi boated a
large hog and mangrove snapper.
Roberto came in with another
Mutton and two lobsters. Deivy
switched with Richi and quickly
found another Hogfish on a sandy
patch below a large outcropping.
I spotted a large silhouette in
the distance approaching me.
As it neared, I recognized its
unmistakable shape. The 8
foot hammerhead shark circled
me with a long and purposeful
pass. Suddenly the predator had
become the prey. It is a humbling
experience to be stalked by a large
predator. It seems once we leave
the concrete jungle we relinquish
tilted its odd-shaped head to look
me over. I kept my loaded gun
pointed at him and unimpressed,
it swam away. Grateful, I swam
what seemed the longest 100 feet
ever to the boat.
As I boarded, Richi was hard
at working making his fathers
famous Peruvian ceviche.
He prepared this Latin delicacy
with fresh snapper, onions,
cilantro, lemon juice, and a few
secret ingredients I promised
not to disclose. The four of us
ate ceviche and drank ice cold
beverages while the boat aimlessly
drifted with the current.
A perfect day: we had excellent
food and a bountiful harvest.
Not all days come together like
this one did. That’s a good
thing because life would lose its
wonder and surprise if it did. An
adventure exists because we don’t
know its outcome. I was grateful
that my premonition had come
true.
That evening I made a vegetable
Mutton snapper soup for my
family. My son Dylan had two
huge servings. As we said grace
I gave thanks for many things:
family, friends and health. It was
ago with several lessons on the
beaches, and eventually in the
waters of Crandon Park, Miami,
Florida.
The relatively new sport appealed
to me for the perceived sense of
freedom I imagined it offered. I
had visions of throwing my gear in
the car and heading out for wind
powered journeys − island hoping,
and backpacking/kiteboarding
expeditions.
At the time, directional boards,
which had evolved from the
sport’s early use of modified
surfboards were still common.
In fact, the first time I attempted
to actually ride, I began from
a sandbar, powered up the kite
and stepped into the straps of the
surfboard style board and took
off! I was pumped! The easy to
plane and optional straps made the
whole board thing a piece of cake.
Then things took a turn for the
worse.
I decided to invest in my own
gear. Following the advise of
friends and instructors, I purchased
a Cabrinha 14 and a twin tip
board. The unidirectional boards
were falling out of fashion and
considered old school- apparently.
I didn’t know it at the time but I
had entered into the sport when
wakeboarding was heavily
influencing everything from
boards to bindings and even riding
style.
“Stiltville”- a popular destination for
Miami downwinders.
By the time I got back out with
my new gear the scene on the
beach looked like a wakeboarder
convention without boats.
I tried to embrace the sport and
master upwind techniques and
tricks, but after a few overly
successful air launches followed
by far less successful landings,
I was loosing interest. I was
no closer to my wind powered
expeditions than months before. I
questioned everyone about boats,
island hopping and “kitepacking”.
I was met with a myriad of reasons
as to why I couldn’t do such
things. Several just looked at me
with dumb expression when I
mentioned “kitepacking”.
I wasn’t interested in pulling tricks
for spectators on the beach to see.
That seemed more like “skate
park” or BMX action. I was
looking for more of an endurance,
adventure, expedition sort of thing
(what is called “downwinders”
today). I found no one to embrace
the idea. So I abandoned the sport.
In the ten plus years that have
elapsed since my foray into the
sport it seems there have been a
growing number of like-minded
individuals that want to get their
kiteboarding on, without the need
for precision aeronautical stunts.
The big attraction to these
downwinder excursions is that
newbies can actually get some
kiteboarding done, before they
fully master the sport.
21 • MAY/JUNE 2011
To accommodate these wise
individuals, area kiteboarding
shops are arranging downwinders
in the form of water taxies and
even kiteboarding safaris.
Miami Kiteboarding offers water
taxi service on any day with wind.
The most common trip is to launch
from Crandon Park and get picked
up in Stiltsville or Soldier Key.
These guys are full on committed
to the concept with “Kite Safaris”
going to Caribbean locations.
When I shared my ideas of
“kitepacking” with owner
Christophe, he suprised me by
informing me of some “out and
back” trips to Boca Chita he
has in the works. These trips
are supported by boat, but he
seemed down with the idea of an
unsupported, self contained trip.
X-treme Kites offers a
downwinder / water taxi service
from their Miami Beach location.
Kiters start at X-treme kite’s
beach side location at 7330 Ocean
Terrace and head to South Beach,
usually taking out at around 10th
Street. These guys can set up taxi
services anywhere in the Miami
area.
Most area shops also offer similar
services. Give them a call and
see what they can set up for you,
just be careful when metioning
“kitepacking”.
Move over Cortisone, make
room for Platelet Rich Plasma
BY DAN BARRETT
Spend enough hours on a road
bike or logging miles preparing
for the next marathon and
chances are at some point you
will encounter a chronic overuse
injury. If the usual remedies
such as ice and Advil don’t
get the job done, Platelet Rich
Plasma (PRP) injections may get
you back into the game faster.
Developed in Spain in 2002, PRP
is growing in popularity with
athletes to treat a wide range of
injuries and ailments.
How it Works
The body has an amazing capacity
to heal itself. When the body
becomes injured, a natural healing
process occurs to repair the
damaged tissue. The body signals
platelets and other components
in our blood supply to migrate to
the site of injury. Under normal
conditions, these platelets release
a variety of factors that initiate
and subsequently promote healing.
A relatively new technique has
been developed to harness and
concentrate these platelets to be
precisely introduced to the injury
site in an injectable form. The
implantation of these platelets
from a small amount of the patient’s
own blood has the poten-
tial to “supercharge” the body’s
capacity for healing.
How its’ Done
A small amount of blood is
drawn from the patient into a
sterile tube in the exact same
manner as a standard blood sample.
The tube containing the patient’s
blood
is placed into
a centrifuge
and spun to
separate the
platelets from
the other
blood components.
After a
few minutes,
the concentrated
platelets
are removed
from the same
tube and reintroduced
(injected) into
the patient at
the site of the
injury. Using
a sterile
needle, the
PRP is injected
in and
around the
injury site. This is all accomplished
without using any foreign
material, although some manufactures
utilize an anti-coagulate
“pre-loaded” in the vials.
Click/touch or scan to see
common areas of the body that
may be treated for tendonitis
with platelet-rich plasma.
We recently “looked on” as our
contributing Sport’s Medicine
Physician, Dr. Kalbac, administerd
a PRP treatment to a patient.
The entire process was completed
in about ten minutes.
Six of these minutes were the
“spin time” required to isolate
the plasma. The only time the
patient “felt a small sting” was
during the initial numbing injection
which is administered before
the plasma is re-introduced. This
allows the physician to place the
PRP exactly
where it
is needed
without discomfort
to
the patient.
Dr. Kalbac
began utilizing
PRP two
years ago
and said “the
use of PRP is
an exciting
new technology
we have
for treating
sports
injuries, both
operative
and nonoperative.”
He considers
it so beneficial
that he
utilizes the
technique for all of his surgery
patients. For this application,
blood is drawn pre-op and the
PRP is injected post surgery.
The Science Behind PRP.
Most of the studies we reviewed
for the article where related to
chronic overuse injuries common
to athletes. The studies evaluated
the use of Platelet-Rich Plasma
(PRP) to address these conditions.
A double blind, randomized
controlled trial evaluated
the use of PRP for chronic lateral
epicondylitis (tennis elbow)
which resulted in reduced pain
and increased function, exceeding
the effect of the group treated
with a corticosteroid injection.
Another study evaluated the
use of a single PRP injection in
patients with painful medial or
lateral epicondylitis for at least 6
months that were unresponsive
to other nonsurgical treatments,
including a corticosteroid injection.
The results suggest that a single
PRP injection can improve pain
and function in patients who
failed other types of nonsurgical
treatment, thus avoiding surgery.
2 Other studies have evaluated
the use of PRP for chronic Achilles
tendinapothy, chronic Plantar
Fasciitis and Patellar tendinosis
also known as Jumper’s knee. 3 ,
Is it Safe?
For over twenty years, PRP has
been used in many different
fields of medicine including: cardiac
surgery, oral surgery, dentistry
and periodontal implants,
orthopaedics, wound care, sports
medicine, neurosurgery, general
surgery and cosmetics. 1 The research
and clinical data we found
mostly
supported
the manufacturer’s
safety
claims. 2,3
Because
the platelets
are
produced
from
your own
blood,
there is
no risk of
rejection or
disease transmission. There does
seem to be a small risk of infection,
however it is very rare and
no greater than any other type of
injection.
What would the Tour de
France say about this one?
It seems to be safe and effective,
but is it considered “blood
doping”? Blood doping is basically
the exact opposite of this
procedure. The purpose of blood
doping is to isolate, store and
re-introduce red bloods cells to
enhance oxygen carrying capacity
of an athlete’s blood. We
didn’t have enough time/space to
follow this angle in depth, but we
promise explore it more in the
near future.
How fast does it Work?
In two different studies evaluating
the use of PRP for the treatment
of
tennis elbow,
both
showed
a gradual
improvement
at one
month,
three
months
and six
months.
These
studies
along with
other studies treating different
conditions suggest a reduction in
pain and improvement in function.
PRP delivered via
injection directly to
the problem area.
The “spin” on most websites
claim you may notice improvements
after one injection but,
“additional injections may be
necessary.”
What say we?
This seems to be a better option
than the overused, go to
treatment of choice for the last
several decades- cortisone. It is
certainly worth exploring before
surgery, but don’t take our word
for it, check out the following
studies.
Aging gracefully with healthy
eating, training & balancing life’s
stressors in positive ways allows
one to enjoy the emotional depth
& experience that comes with
time.
As a master’s athlete, former pro
triathlete, 34 marathon finisher
(PR 2:52, 2:53 at Boston Marathon)
& Ironwoman alongside
being a working mom of 3 and
wife for close to 30 years, I feel
like I have arrived at the ultimate
happy hour. I have nothing to
prove, only to relax & enjoy the
freedom that comes with enjoying
my family’s accomplishments,
professional growth and
of course my daily training.
I won’t kid ya, it didn’t come
easy. It took years of discipline,
clean vegetarian eating, lots of
sleep, booze on occasion (only
good champagne & wine) and
faith—taking time to meditate,
pray & be thankful for all of have
been gifted in this life.
So what type of diet does it take
to support a long & healthy life?
Take the Okinawins, the Japanese
population who has 3.5x more
centurions than the rest of Japan
and some of oldest citizens on
the planet. They have 59% lower
incidence of heart disease, 69%
less malignancy, & 59% less
cerebral vascular disease and its
believed to be diet related.
The Okinawins adhere to the
principle Hara Hachi Bu, which
means 80% full. They eat about
20% less than others, ascribing
to what may be called “calorie
restriction”. Now don’t get me
wrong, they don’t starve themselves
like someone with an eating
disorder, they just eat to meet
their needs and avoid the overconsumption
of fats, saturated
fats, sugars & alcohol.
Instead, their diet is built on a
daily foundation of plant basednutrient
dense foods- fruits &
vegetables, about 4 and 7-12
servings respectfully; 4 servings
calcium rich food like milk,
yogurt, soy & greens; 1-3 servings
omega 3 rich fish, soy, and/
or nuts, whole grains, plant based
vs. animal protein and daily
tea. In other words they adhere
to a diet which is chock full of
vitamins and minerals, fiber &
phytocompounds, the plant based
colors, flavors and aroma that
naturally acts as antioxidants to
combat free radicals.
Free radicals are loose oxygen
molecules produced by xenobiotics—toxic
compounds in our
air, POPS (persistent organic
pollutants) in food, water and
household appliances, pillows &
FITNESS
cleaning agents, and of course
those produced naturally as a
result of metabolism and exercise.
For more information about
reducing your risks in your home
from POPS go to www.everydayexposures.com.
While there is no one diet fits
all for longevity & health, there
appears to be some consistent
themes and the Okinawins got it
right. Do you?
Although this starts out as a
basketball story, it pertains to any
athlete that runs in their sport
or runs when they train. A few
years ago I had a pro-basketball
center that presented to my
office with complaints of lateral
right knee pain. He described a
motion where he is passed the
ball, plants his right foot and
hooks around as he jumps to
shoot the ball. He does this again
and again throughout practice
and during a game. The history
certainly pointed to a potential
knee injury. However, after a
more in-depth history and an
examination of the right knee
(and examination of the left knee
for comparison), I determined
that his knee pain wasn’t really
caused by a problem with his
knee. Next on up the kinetic
chain was the hip, sacroiliac and
lower back. Everything in the
hip & lower back were normal
but it was the sacroiliac joints
where I eventually discovered the
problem.
Upon examining the knee there
was some pain in the distal aspect
of his lateral knee (the outside of
the knee). Yes it was tender and
sore, but the orthopedic exam of
the knee was absolutely normal
– as was the examination of his
hips and lower back. When I
examined the sacroiliac joints,
all standard orthopedic tests were
normal and didn’t cause any pain
in the back, hip or knee. Then I
did a technique quite common to
chiropractors, known as motion
palpation. This is where we apply
a little repetitive springy motion
into a joint to see if it has the
normal springy end feel that a
properly functioning joint should.
When I applied this examination
technique to the sacroiliac joint,
the joints had a hard or locked
end feel father than the springy
motion of a normally functioning
joint. Although there are several
causes for I.T.-Band Syndrome,
it’s typically thought to be from
overuse, misuse, overtraining
syndrome (not giving the body
enough time to recover between
training sessions), returning
from an injury too soon or faulty
biomechanics.
Although the sacroiliac (S.I.)
joints don’t move much, they
are supposed to move a little at
the end range of your walking
and running gate. Both S.I.
joints should flex and extend
a few millimeters as your legs
get to their most forward and
aft positions when running and
walking. During normal gait,
the Tensor Fascia Lata (TFL)
functions to flex and internally
rotate the hip while the Ilio Tibial
Band (ITB) functions to stabilize
the lateral knee. However when
the S.I. joint locks up, the TFL
and ITB pull with increased force
on the lateral structures of the
knee (where it attaches), causing
the iliotibial band to become
overstressed and ultimately
inflamed.
It’s my theory that when the
S.I. joints lock up it prevents the
normal pendulum like swing of
your legs and thus the TFL/ITB
will help move it laterally, pulling
slightly on the lateral structure of
the knee, ultimately causing the
inflamed distal I.T. band. Sounds
good, but again, that’s my theory.
In either case, the problem is
occurring at the sacroiliac joints
(part of your lower back) and
not at the knee. Remember what
I said initially, both the knee
exam and the low back exam
were virtually normal. Any
physician would have examined
it and found it normal. This is
why it’s important to take a good
the injury occurred) and do a
good physical exam that includes
classic orthopedic test but also
examines the soft tissues AND
the intrinsic motion within a joint
complex. Without this last part,
this problem would never have
been properly identified.
This Iliotibial band friction
syndrome (I.T. Band Syndrome)
is commonly seen in runners,
triathletes and weight lifters that
include a lot of squatting in their
routines. Everyone that comes in
with this swears they have a torn
meniscus “or something” wrong
in their knee. But buyer beware,
this problem can present itself as
low back pain, hip pain, upper
thigh pain or lateral knee pain.
What’s the best way to tell the
difference? Get an examination
by a competent sports medicine
physician - AND always ask
for a detailed explanation as to
why you are in pain. If they
26 • MAY/JUNE 2011
can explain the mechanism of
the problem to you clearly, that
means they most likely have
a good understanding of your
problem and you’re in the right
place.
Remember…pain is merely a
symptom that alerts you to the
existence of a problem. It doesn’t
necessarily tell you what the
problem is or where the problem
is. Most of you are aware that
a heart attack can present itself
as pain in the left arm or left
shoulder blade and not in your
chest. In this case we saw
lateral knee pain being caused
by something other than a knee
problem.
So let me finish with this, while
the internet can provide you with
some background on your aches
and pain, nothing replaces a
good ole’ fashion medical history
and physical examination. If
you continue training and you
continue to experience pain, don’t
wait too long to get it looked
at by a trained sports medicine
professional. The faster you find
the right answer, the faster you’ll
find the right solution.
What this means to you…
As a SUP or kayaker: more
propulsion with each stroke.
As a wind chaser: a stronger
rotational counter-balance
allowing you to push through
and recover from stronger
winds and hairy situations.
As a runner: stronger more
stable push off with each stride.
Start Position:
Begin in a push-up position
so that the lower third of your
shins and the top of your feet are
resting on the physio-ball.
Motion 1:
Lift your right foot off the
physio-ball, bring your knee
forward, drop your right hip and
bring your right foot under your
stomach so that it is pointing
to your left shoulder. Return it
back to the start position on the
physio-ball.
Motion 2:
With both feet back on the ball
(stat position) lift your hips up
into the air while bringing your
feet closer to your hands until
your wrist, shoulders, and hips
are aligned vertically. Then
return to the start position.
Now repeat Motion 1 lifting
the left leg off the physio-ball.
Complete Motion #1 then move
on to Motion 2. Keep alternating
legs for increased core activation.
Perform 2 sets of 5 each leg
prior to your sport to activate
and recruit the necessary neural
patterns. You should notice more
stability and precision with your
movements.
move of the month
ARMANDO CRUZ MSPT, CSCS
Physio-Ball Corkscrew
This months exercise is designed to increase core strength,
rotational control, and shoulder stability.
Core Challenge Prescription:
Perform 3 sets of 10 reps of the
Thread-the-Needle (TTN) to Pike
with each leg
(1 set equals: 10 TTN with left,
10 TTN with the right, 20 pikes).
Do it 3x’s/week.
Progress slowly. You will
probably not be able to do it at
first. This was designed to be
difficult.
Your goal should be to be able
to do it before the next months
issue.
This 5-part series is designed to put
you in condition for any sport.
Last month was all about strengthtraining—including
a bonus
Intensity Conditioning chart! This
month it is all about flexibility.
Part III Keeping it
Flexible..
Can you lie on your back and
lift your leg straight up in the
air? Probably not, if you’ve been
following the program. That’s
because building endurance will
make your hamstrings tight,
truncate your hip flexors and bow
your upper body, depending on
your activity of choice. What you
are, Gertrude, is literally bent out
of shape by the demands of your
sport.
See, training gets you out of shape
more than in as those untold repetitions
start limiting your range
of motion and impede your ability
to access all the strength you’re
developing. Cardiovascular conditioning
in no way obviates being
the equivalent of ‘muscle-bound’.
So, to get strong, be flexible. And
you don’t worry about your performance
suffering when you’re
undoing all that tightness, because
flexibility allows you to push the
envelope further.
If you’re diligently following
this program then strength- and
endurance-training have made you
pretty inflexible. Counter that with
a stretching program that incorporates
techniques and poses for
building eccentric strength—in
weight-room parlance, your negative
reps. You’ll also need to train
core muscles with multiple-joint
movements that utilize front-toback,
side-to-side, and rotational
planes of motion.
And remember to always warm
up not by stretching but by doing.
You can stretch later. (During is
OK, if you’re strength-training.)
Boosting your athleticism may
mean taking a page from yoga to
help your flexibility, breathing and
balance. Increase these areas and
you’ll find yourself able to extend
and pull back repeatedly without
getting hurt. The end result is more
positions you can be powerful in!
Use controlled breathing that
involves inhaling deeply, filling
your rib cage, and allowing you
to slowly exhale through the nose
(constraining and pressurizing
airflow) to generate internal heat;
this allows reaching deeper when
you stretch. It slows the heart
rate, decreases tension and blood
pressure—even increases V02
max, the standard gauge of cardio
efficiency—and increases mental
clarity, too! Breathing this way
when you stretch bestows a calmness
helpful for dealing with pain
when, say, you’re pushing through
the wall. You’ll stay more relaxed
in stressful situations, in or out of
sports.
More lean muscle means the
more bending becomes difficult.
Without turning yourself into a
pretzel—stretching isn’t a competition—follow
these stretches (best
done after a warm-up) to help keep
you balanced and strong.
Always remember to breathe.
Over time, this becomes subconscious,
part of what you do. Inner
focus like this translates over to
sports, and getting into this breathflow
zone will center you.
Follow the series below of flexibility
stretches as a cooling-down
adjunct to your endurance work
three days a week. Following
periodization protocol, functionaltraining
takes a back seat to allow
time to rest for next month’s speed
and power work. For that you’ll
need your ligaments and tendons
really flexible to maximize muscle
performance.
To help you out, we’ve scavenged
the yoga bin for some of their best
stuff:
Forward Fold/Good Mornings
A great warm-up that stretches
hamstrings, calves and hips and
strengthens legs and knees.
Keep your feet hip-width apart
while hinging hips forward and
lowering your torso towards the
floor. Bend knees while grasping
your elbows with opposite hands.
Breathe deeply, and relax; release
tension. Hold for one minute, before
returning to standing.
Downward-Facing Dog/Modified
Plank Releases tightness in your
lower back and stretches the feet,
shoulders, hamstrings and calves
while strengthening upper body
and core. Torches abdominal fat
while strengthening your thighs
and legs.
Assume a hands-and-knees
position and place your hands
shoulder-width apart with fin-
straighten your legs. Lengthen
pose by walking your hands forward
and feet backward. Squeeze
your thighs and press them back
towards the wall. Pressing your
heels back and down, gaze between
your feet. Suck in your abs,
while engaging your core. Breathe;
hold 3 minutes. Repeat.
Chair/Squat Stretches shoulders
and chest; strengthens thighs,
calves, spine and ankles.
Stand with feet together, and
inhale while raising your arms,
palms facing, parallel to head and
neck. Exhale, bending knees while
sitting down and back. Keep your
shoulders back, and prevent knees
from extending past toes. Continue
to exhale while ‘sitting’ deeper until
your thighs are parallel with the
floor. Keep core muscles engaged
while keeping knees and thighs
together. Hold for 30 seconds.
Crescent Lunge A pre-workout
routine for loosening and opening
the hips; stretches groin; strengthens
your arms and legs.
Assume a hands-and-knees position.
Step right foot between hands
while keeping your right knee
directly over your heel. Inhale,
slowly lifting back knee off the
floor. Press your heel back towards
the wall while straightening the
back leg. Keep your spine elongated;
hold and breathe. Letting
your hips fall forward, continue to
press your back heel behind. Hold
one minute, repeat on other side.
Part III Keeping it Flexible
proves your knee- stability.
Assume Crescent Lunge, stepping right
foot forward. Turn left toes facing left
side of room while pressing your heel
firmly down. Maintain back foot parallel
with the front of room. Inhale, reaching
arms up beside your head, palms facing,
keeping your shoulders back and down.
Lift torso up from front thigh, and prevent
front knee from extending past toes.
Face both hips forward. Hold for one
minute; repeat on opposite side.
Finally, continue your heart-rate zone
endurance periodization work by increasing
the duration. Keep last month’s
schedule, with specific intervals on Fridays;
increase duration in weeks 10 and
11; reduce it for week 12, and prepare
for final-day lactate-threshold test. Also
reduce Tuesday and Thursday strength-
FITNESS
training from 10 to 8 exercises, allowing
for next month’s speed and power drills.
Perform one-leg forward lunges and side
lunges two times a week, and add in
upright rows, Swiss-ball flies, bent-over
rows and chin-ups.
Perform 2 sets of 5 each leg prior to
your sport to activate and recruit the
necessary neural patterns. You should
notice more stability and precision with
your movements.
Next month: Faster, Stronger!
