Movie Review: ParaNorman<br />

ParaNorman, The latest release from stop motion animation<br />
company, LAIKA, is a great ghoulish gift poised to<br />
warm the heart with a little radioactive zombie ooze.<br />
The film begins by introducing the town of Blithe<br />
Hollow, Massachusetts, and Norman Babcock (Kodi<br />
Smit-McPhee), an 11-year-old high school outcast with<br />
an uncanny gift — the ability to see and converse with<br />
the dead. Norman’s family and community are skeptical<br />
of his gift and often belittle him for his apparent dialogues<br />
with the deceased.<br />
Although he finds himself about as welcome as the<br />
walking dead around his hometown, Norman eventually<br />
finds an ally in an equally bullied classmate, Neil Downe<br />
(Tucker Albrizzi). The two form a kinship that will help<br />
prepare them for the wicked witchery soon to be un-<br />

leashed upon their town. Although his interactions with<br />
the dead are generally of a friendly nature, Norman begins<br />
to have increasingly dark visions of an ancient curse<br />
forming over Blithe Hollow.<br />
The young medium and his new sidekick eventually<br />
stumble into his crazed uncle, Mr. Prenderghast<br />
(John Goodman), who explains that the community is<br />
haunted by a witch who has laid a curse upon the town<br />
in revenge for her execution over a hundred years earlier.<br />
In order to break the curse, Norman learns that he<br />
must read a special book upon the gravesite of the witch<br />
before sundown on the anniversary of her death.<br />
Running into high school bullies along the way,<br />
Norman is tardy for his task and unwittingly unleashes<br />
a horde of zombies upon his town. The young medium<br />
finds himself quickly outnumbered by the gang of apparently<br />
furious fiends, and recruits an unlikely group<br />

of friends and former enemies to save their hamlet from<br />
certain doom.<br />
What ParaNorman executes perfectly is the tying together<br />
of characters that appear to be diametrically opposed<br />
to each other. The film teaches that perhaps we are<br />
all just one zombie apocalypse away from finally finding<br />
understanding with each other.<br />
Unlike many young adult films of its category that tend<br />
to get stuck in a lifeless rigor mortis of stale plot lines, rotten<br />
dialogue and soggy endings, ParaNorman expands the genre<br />
by adding enough subtle adult humour, beautiful visuals<br />
and dynamic characters to bring the dead to life.<br />
