A
the
Lottery
Scholarship
The Department of
Governmental Affairs oversees
the ASNMSU Student
Advocacy Board, which has
been working tirelessly on
behalf of NMSU students to
address the pressing issue of
Lottery Scholarship Fund
solvency. The Student
Advocacy Board consists of a
diverse group of students with
a variety of majors,
backgrounds, and interests.
The Student Advocacy
Board travel to Santa Fe
during the legislative session to
represent the student body and
advocate for issues that impact
NMSU students. The New
Mexico Lottery Scholarship is
currently facing a solvency
crisis. It is projected to run out
of money by 2014 if no action
is taken, so the Department of
Governmental Affairs and The
Student Advocacy Board have
focused their efforts on
fighting for Lottery
Scholarship reform over the
past two years.
ggie post
The ASNMSU Senate
recently passed two resolutions
reflecting student priorities
regarding the Lottery
Scholarship. Resolution 14
opposes two State House Bills
that would expand the number
of students eligible for the
Lottery Scholarship and
exacerbate the problem of
insolvency. Resolution 15 lists
ASNMSU’s requests that any
changes made to the Lottery
Scholarship promote fund
solvency and student success,
and that any changes are
“grandfathered” and won’t
affect students currently
receiving the Lottery
Scholarship. Student Advocacy
Board is also beginning to
collaborate with a local
legislator to draft legislation
that would create a permanent
student committee under the
Department of Higher
Education that would meet to
receive updates and provide
input on any future changes to
the Lottery Scholarship.
Fractional Grading:
Implementation Summer 2013
In the Summer of 2013, NMSU will be
implementing the new Fractional Grading system
for both undergraduates and graduates. For those
who have attended NMSU prior to Summer 2013
and received grades, GPA’s before Summer 2013
will not be affected. However, Summer 2013,
students’ GPA’s will begin to be based on the new
factional grading system.
The grading scale was supported by Faculty
Senate, and approved by the Board of Regents.
Some of the major considerations that were looked
into and changed was the grade of a C-. The C-
under fractional grading was considered a 1.7. A
compromise was made to allow the C- to remain at
a 2.0. The compromise was made to ensure those
who had a grade of a C- range would still qualify
and meet GPA standards for scholarships and
financial aid.
The grading system with the slight modification
for a C- is not just being used by NMSU. It is also
implemented at Colorado State University, Penn
State University, Arizona State University, and
others.
Crimson Cab is a program offered
here at NMSU to ensure the safety
Recently, the NMSU
D a n c e S p o r t C o m p a n y
approached the ASNMSU Senate
to help alleviate travel costs for a
dance competition.
The President of NMSU
DanceSport Company shared
that initially, he was unaware
where the funding could be
found. However, it took time to
realize how the ASNMSU
student government can help.
Currently, ASNMSU will fund
$3,000 for every four hours of
community service (two on and
two of campus). Currently,
ASNMSU funds for
competitions, conference
presentation and attendance, and
research. The Senate process is
easy; however, ASNMSU has
thirty senators who represent
students in every college, and are
willing to explain the process and
to help guide the paperwork.
The NMSU DanceSport
Company did extensive
community service. They held
all sorts of performances for the
c o m m u n i t y a n d t o b i g
organizations, like the High
H e e l s f o r H i g h H o p e ,
St. Genevieve's Church, and the
Renaissance Fair. They worked
and helped at The Whole
Enchilada Fiesta the entire
weekend running a Pepsi booth.
The NMSU DanceSport also
teaches free dance lessons every
Tuesday in the semester on
campus for students and the
whole Las Cruces community.
T h e D a n c e S p o r t
Company sought ASNMSU
funding for a competition. As a
team, they excelled. All of the
team’s couples competed and
several of them qualified for the
National Competition in L.A.,
which will be held in April. The
Senate Meetings
March 7
March 21
April 11
April 25
Meetings takes place at 6:00 PM in the
Senate Chamber and Gallery, located on the
3rd floor of Corbett Student Union.
How ASNMSU Can Help Your Organization
1st and 2nd place couples will
h a v e t h e o p p o r t u n i t y t o
represent NMSU in the USA
Dance Championship. A total of
six amazing and hardworking
couples will go and show
everything they've got.
The NMSU DanceSport
would definitely use ASNMSU
again because they believe
ASNMSU has been an amazing
help, not only to them, but to the
whole school in general.
To have a senator sponsor
a bill for your organization,
contact the ASNMSU or drop by
the office. ASNMSU will be
more than helpful getting you in
contact with a senator that will
help fit your needs.
ASNMSU is located on the
second floor of the Corbett
Center Student Union.
