Daniel T.
Roach
The class of 1996 would like to dedicate this year's
yearbook to Daniel T. Roach. Throughout our four years
at St. Andrew's, Mr. Roach has been a central figure in
our lives. Brilliant and captivating in the classroom, Mr.
Roach motivates his students to work hard. Outside in the
classroom Mr. Roach has been a father to us all. He is
always willing to lend out his few precious moments of
free time: he never fails to give us a listening ear and a
helping hand. Mr. Roach continues to demonstrate his
dedication to us through his constant care and concern.
St. Andrew's has been truly blessed by the presence of Tad
Roach. The senior class will miss him greatly next year
and wish him the best of luck as the fourth headmaster of
St. Andrew's. It is our only hope that we may come across
more Tad Roaches as we traverse the shores beyond St.
Andrew's.
\
Bob Stegeman
In the light of his tireless efforts as a
teacher in and ou of the classroom, the class
of 1996 dedicates this year's yearbook to Bob
Stegeman.
Inside the classroom, Mr. Stegeman is as
supportive and open as he is well read. He has
a unique and great love for History, which he
has fostered in his students since 1978. He has
made a profound impact upon the History
Department itself, and his contributions to
academics at Saint Andrew's countless.

Third Form
On the first day of school, the
Third Form was lucky to have the
unique bonding experience of a visit
to Echo Hill Outdoor School. There
they learned the names of the faces
that were so unfamiliar and began to
build the friendships that will remain
with them forever. This was
just the very beginning of the adventures
that await them here. After
settling in and adjusting to their
busy schedules, the third formers
are thriving in their new environment.
From academics to athletics to
music and the arts, they have already
paved their way for their future
at St. Andrew's.
Fourth Form
This year's fourth formers started
the year by meeting with the
Blairstown group. The counselors
from Blairstown helped us start out
our year as a cohesive group with a
series of games, trust walks, and
ropes course. Many sophomores
found the experience to be a fun and
easy way to get to know the new
members of the fourth form. Form
presidents Lizette Klussmann and
Michael Evans, and vice presidents
Jenell Williams and James Jenkins,
worked hard to organize fund raisers
for the winter term semi-formal.
Pizza sales and a Parents Weekend
car wash were the biggest hits of the
year financially, and in terms of the
form unity they provided. The fourth
formers are especially thankful for
all the hard work Mrs. Bride and Mr.
Denning put into making this year
so successful. Their enthusiasm, patience,
and willingness to always
help out, made our fourth form year
a year to remember.

Fifth Form
The Fifth Form has proven itself
to be a remarkable addition to the
Saint Andrew's community. The
Class of '97 has remained virtually
unscathed as one unified group since
the first days of September in 1993,
In fact, over the course of our time at
St. Andrew's, the Class of '97 has lost
only two members. The additions to
our form which came at the beginning
of Sophomore and Junior years
brought our unity and diversity to
even greater levels.
With the help of our form advisors,
Mr. DeSalvo and Ms. Twomey, the
Fifth Form has taken on many ambitious
projects with great success. As
trendsetters in pizza sales and pioneers
in the second wave of
Halloweekends (the Halloweekend
ban was lifted this year,) the Fifth
Form has prove that when unified,
there is little that it cannot accomplish.
Sixth Form
Four score and three years ago,
the '92-'93 III form was one of the
smallest classes ever. No one
thought that Will Porter would grow
past 4' 11" or that our class would
rise up to be one of the most outstanding
senior classes ever. Although
a very studious form, (with a
plethora of National Merit Whatevers)
we have also used our imagination
and creativity to improve student
life as a whole at SAS.
The seniors manipulated human
nature to make crush sales one of the
most successful fundraisers ever. Every
weekend we dedicated our time
to feeding and visiting the homeless
shelter in Wilmington. It was fun
and nice and good. Our prom was
first rate thanks to the unity of this
class.
Although we have had a somewhat
checkered past, (we've lost 12
people in three years) this form has
made the most of its experience here.
We will all have our memories of or
our time here, whether it's late night
English parties on Vorhees or late
night chats across the gully. Because
of our class' diversity and drive, we
will always be remembered here at
good 'ole SAS.

It is a well known fact that the only
people more demented than the student
body are those insane few who
teach us, code named (fittingly enough)
"The Teachers". Yes, it takes a special
few to actually agree to being exiled
with a rowdy, obnoxious hoard of immature
twits for nine months (but
enough about Mr. Austin and Mr.
Hyde). You would either need to look in
the circus or in jail to find a more
varied band of hooligans than is represented
in our beloved faculty. And we
do love them for it. Although "love"
isn't among the four-letter words you
would be thinking after your Chemistry
teacher hands you back a test with
a big, fat "forty" slapped on it, you
must admit that it is an acquired affection.
Were it not for Mr. Brooke, we
couldn't spend our Saturday evenings
puking our troubles (and dinner) away
while watching those obscure, appallingly
putrid films he proudly chooses
himself. Were it not for Ms. Roche,
Latin would be dead. No! I mean really
dead (speaking of dead, never go hit-forhit
with Mrs. Caldwell). And were it not
for Chebe's rousing improvisations of
"Free Bird", "Happy Birthday", and
other liturgical favorites during
Wednesday-night chapel, even more
people would be asleep. Indeed, we
would be lost without 'em.
But about those red pants, Mr.
Dear Yearbook editors,
I'm sorry there's not corridor picture for K, but Lindley was still searching
for the "missing" cookies and milk, Katie Thompson was stalking Mr. ? with
the video camera, and Taylor was on another weekend. Katie Jackson and
Serena were having "Breakfast at Tiffany's" with Holly Golightly. While
Moira was on a photo shoot, Kate Keeley and Brooke were breaking and entering
into her room in a Search For The Holy Halogen. I tried to get Megan
but she couldn't hear me because she was singing too loudly, Rachel thought
the phone was for her so she was "in the shower," I mean "asleep" ... no,
she just wasn't here. Lindsay was jammin' with Robert Nesta, and Sofia's
new number is 378-9991. So as you can see, I, the perfect, I mean prefect, of
K, am the only one who showed up.
Spanish Club
This year, the Spanish club has been
quite active in bringing together the entire
Spanish speaking community to learn
and have fun with each other in a relaxed
environment. The Club has hosted a few
Friday night movies accompanied by Taco
Bell or Chips n'Salsa, We ended 1995 with
out huge "Fiesta de Navidad" where all
the Spanish classes participated with
songs, a nativity scene, and the grand
finale-the breaking of the pinata. We hope
that as the year progresses, the Spanish
club continues to be active in providing
Spanish culture from the student perspective
outside the classroom.
Latin Club
The 1995-96 Latin Club has had a busy year. This
year's activities have included watching various
high quality theatrical performances, such as every
one's favorite, "Clash of the Titans," and Monty
Python's "Life of Brian." We have also enjoyed
regular attendance at the Latin Table with Karl
Crow always willing to be waiter. In the process of
learning Roman culture, we have found that the
Romans were very fond of Dunkin' Donuts, beef and
broccoli, and chicken fiesta. As you can see in our
photo we have also discovered the secrets of Roman
apparel. Ms. Roche has remained very predictable in
her mood swings, floral arrangements, and class
discussions which range from the Latin 1 verb form
lesson to the Latin 5 discussions of irrumator. These
activities would not have been as successful without
our omnipotent leaders, Charles Raffetto and Bri
McCarthy, (better know as Zeus and Hera).
tradition fall by the wayside.
Spectrum Club
The Spectrum Club is a culturally diverse group
that explores issues of race, gender, and sex in and
outside of St. Andrew's. Oftentimes students do not
ask questions concerning these topics or other cultural
issues because they are afraid to offend other
people, or they simply do not know how to ask. The
Spectrum Club provides a mediated atmosphere
where students can address these sensitive issues.
This year, the Club held the Million Man March
Forum where the student body discussed the ideas
behind the March and how it related to our own lives
and the St. Andrew's community. Members of the
Spectrum Club also organized the Martin Luther
King Chapel Service to commemorate the life of Dr.
King. Although the Spectrum Club evolved only this
year, we hope that it will continue to be an influential
and exciting Club that celebrates the cultural
diversity of our school.
The Emu
A Co-Dependent Newspaper
How can one describe the essence of the Emu? Are we a bunch of
revolutionary co-conspirators? Are we the part of the unwashed;
readily pacified masses? Are we simply looking for a chance to mock
every single thing around us and blow up any traditional precept with
daredevil syntax, chaffing grammar, and excess verbiage? The typical
Wherein lies the moral of my narration, you ask? Well, I could
answer that, but I'd prefer to respond with my own question that will
hopefully better elucidate the answer to your quandary. In response,
I would ask. "Do you think you could keep up those questions up if I
The People's Conservative Party (POP) can be defined
Athletic Committee
This year the Athletic Committee performed
countless and unacknowledged deeds for the
St. Andrew's community. While we may not be
the most visible organization in the school, we
contribute much more than the average student
realizes. Would any one have gotten to
buy such stylish warmup suits without the
valuable ideas brought up at our dynamic
meetings? No, so the next time you hear that
the Athletic Committee has an announcement,
don't laugh. Because if you do, you might as
well forget about the raging bonfires and topless
dancing at those pep rallies. Oh yeahalways
remember to practice good sportsmanship,
and don't chew gum in the gym.
Bowl Movement
Unlike last year, the Bowl Movement is now
a spring sport. So, this winter, instead of bowling,
we have been training for the bowl movement.
Solid Platinum has gotten his bench
press up to 215 Ibs, while Hairball and Leia
Organa are struggling to lift the bar. But that's
o-kay-they're finesse bowlers. All in all, the
Bowl Movement is rearin' to go take down
those pins, and this year will be the best one
yet. So, let's end in prayer:
Deliver me from low score games, 7-10 splits
and open frames, guide my ball into that
pocket, and drop that pin if I only rock it, guide
my ball when my hand slips, and send that pin
lickety split. And let me make my claim to
fame, and let bowl just one three hundred
games. Amen.
As always, the job of planning St.
Andrew's weekend activities has
been quite challenging. How many
things can you do in Middletown,
Delaware? However, this year's Social
Activities Committee (SAC)
has overcome this minor hindrance.
With ballroom dancing,
the Suppressed Desires dance,
drive-in movies on the front lawn,
mystery trips, and a constant flow
of Frosty runs, SAC has managed
to present the student body with a
wide variety of activities. Perhaps
Sac has been more successful this
year due to the new freshman on
the committee, David Sykes (a.k.a.
Speedy Veedy). As a result of
Speedy's willingness to perform
any type of announcement concerning
weekend activities, the
popularity of SAC events has increased
dramatically. Special
thanks to Speedy and every member
of SAC who has put so much
time and effort into this year's
activities.
Weekend Activities
Weekend activities!?! Weekend Activities!?! I have a major
problem with the use of this phrase, because it implies that
there is something to do at St. Andrews on the weekends.
Now I don't know about you, but I don't find cow pastures
to be particularly exhilarating. Unfortunately, St. Andrews is
encircled by them as well as acres and acres of grass and corn.
Of course there are the select few who do take to "appreciating
our natural surroundings" in these fields on Saturday nights,
but that's another sort of weekend activity altogether (although
SAC does offer the occasional Saturday night
"Twister" competition.)
However, most St. Audrean's lack the ability to frequent
these cultivated areas and are thus compelled to select their
activity for the usual lineup of movie trips, dances in the
student center, spending a few hours in Lindsay Allen's room,
magic tournaments, and sold-out tractor pulls.
So where does this leave the average St. Andrean on a
Saturday evening? Somewhere far away from the cultural
pleasures of the world (eg, pro-wrestling matches) surrounded
by acres and acres and acres of com ...
Mens Soccer Team. As he put it, "There
was no one Most Valuable Player or Most
This was simply a great team."
The raw strength of this team lay in its
teamwork and its will to win. We supported
each other and stayed together through every
game, whether we were corning hack
from a deficit or holding on to a one goal lead.
Desire and teamwork allowed this team to
become undisputed conference champion
with an 8-0 conference record and an overall
record of 11-4-2. Highlights included two
victories over Tower Hill, revenge for last
year's State Tournament loss to Wilmington
Christian with a 3-2 win, a scoreless tie with
the massive Hill School, and of course, Payne
Miller's haircut. Under the excellent tutelage
of Mr. Roach and Mr. Austin, we constantly
improved, eventually becoming one
of the most feared teams in the state. Every
member of this team should feel proud to
have been part of the 1995 Varsity Mens
74
Led fearlessly by finicky soccer guru Bobby
Rue, his stoic and able assistant Rich
Matusow, and the three wonder women cleverly
disguised as tri-captains, this year's
women's soccer team shuttled and "shun"-ed
its way through a hard-earned 4-4-4 season.
Over the summer, a letter from Mr. Rue
joyously announced an impending fitness
and skills test, striking fear into the hears of
many (what? run?) and kicking off the season
in splendid, meticulous fashion. Raring to go
after a lovely camp experience, a well-conditioned
squad of returning players welcomed
to the beautiful manicured fields of St.
Andrew's a hot shot bunch of soccer virtuosos.
Thus, spurred by cries of "Isn't it a
bummer!" and intrigued and fascinated by
endless Lions trivia, we won, lost, tied, tied,
and tied again. Though hampered by Emily's
broken leg-ankle combo (Bishop Mcdevitt
# 12} and Anne's perpetually torn mcl and
hip injury, we slipped, skidded, and slid our
way through wet weather and dry. Backed by
our rock-solid "D" and concussion and
bruise-prone goalies, our speedy offense shot
and shot and shot. This was to be a year of
"ahnosts," which proved to be frustrating
and exhilarating. Finally, though we didn't
spot James Neal this year, Page did introduce
the team to a giant cheese wedge and
taco meanwhile our coach was planning his
elopement. The seven graduation seniors
will be greatly missed, but with such a young
team, next season will definitely be successful.
Good Luck On
Saturday!
78
On August 29, 1995, new coaches
Hyde and Lieb began their carrier at
St. Andrew's, and football as not been
the same since. Adding new life and
perspective to the squad, they changed
the chemistry of the team and its players,
and though we did not have a
winning record, our final game against
#9 ranked Tatnall exemplified our improvement
as individual players and as
a team.
Football at St. Andrew's is not easy;
we are outmanned, outsized, and outgunned
going into every game. Any
senior, though, will tell you that this
year's team played harder, more aggressively,
and with more energy than
any team in the past four years. Giving
110% effort in every minute of every
game, we continually frustrated our
opponents. From Coach Hyde's famous
quotations (the ones censored anyway)
to Coach Colburn's school of stretching,
the team had a great time playing the
Without a doubt this year's women's
Even with the highest percentage injury
was full of highlights and not so
highlights, the Goddesses of Victory
persevered, with help and encouragement
from Mrs. Denning and Mr.
Brandywine, Bri's mad obsession with
freezing temperatures in the whirlpool,
interval work, distance work, the
gauntlet, and the heat. The only victorious
challenger these women faced
was the hard ground; it was the source
of many injuries. "Hie practices were
tough (who could forget the 52 minute
run?), races were challenging (Tower
Hill) and injuries were numerous (skin
splints anyone?), but we made it
through with the aid of Keith, "Grease
we found through trial and immediate
are by and large a very ambitious,
iconoclastic group of would-be athletes with
an almost fanatical devotion to nothing but
our muse and the ritual worship of Ann
Mathers, er ... MacTaggerf. Would anyone
but the most devout and earnest willfully
spend sunny afternoons hidden from the
community at large while risking the prospect
of public embarrassment and a fatal
allergic reaction to the prodigious mold and
dust coating the stage?
Truly, this band is frightening, reclusive
and often unsanitary bunch, but when these
hermits host the masses in their subterranean
realm, the results are at the very least
interesting. Certainly this year was no different,
as Neil Simon's The Odd Couple provided
the actors with excellent material.
Who could forget Joe Freeman uncannily
realistic slumber, Mark Bourne's stunning
auditory memory of the spoken word, or the
tattered bits of severely battered furniture
that John Kuane left strewn in his wake? All
in all, The Odd Couple was a enjoyable experience
for both actors and those who attended,
even though its brief two night run
couldn't completely satisfy those involved.
As the curtain call ended and the last devoted
"theater groupie" left the auditorium,
a dull pall shadowed the warped thcspians
faces; the hermits have again abandoned
their cave for another year, seeing sunlight
again but wishing for the moldy, dank allure
of the stage.
Men's Swimming And Diving
Let's Go Saints!
This year, the Men's swim
team had a very successful season.
We ended the year with a
record of 6-5. Our season culminated
with the successful defense
of our DISC meet title,
held for the first time at the
Saint Andrew's Aquatic Center.
At the Delaware State
meet, the team scored for the
first time in it's four year history,
in the 200 yard Medly
Relay, 200 yard Free Relay, 100
yard Breaststroke, and 400
Free Relay. Many school records
were broken and everyone
on the team dropped times
in their events. With the loss of
only five senior swimmers, the
team will be very strong in
1997, led by newly elected captains
Jonathan Moneta and
Tom Stephens.
Wrapping- up the season with the D.I.S.C, title and
placing tenth in the State Meet, the success of the
women's ^vimminii and diving team is indescribable.
Being only four years old. the swim team has
developed into a team of exceptional swimming
ability with spirit, leadership, and dedication. Although
just short one and two points in consecutive
meets against Concord and McKean, the team was
never at a loss for drive or the determination to
dominate every team that crossed its path. The
team's victory over Archmere landed us as *8 in the
state rankings, upsetting Concord and Tower Hill
Rock solid Beth Calder led the diving team not only
on jogs and abdominal workouts, but also with her
room runs. Sarah and Meredith's utrlv bathinu suit-?
Berry's speedo stance Lindsev and Lmdsav'= *kio to
the beach. Jamila's jinxed goggles. Tostito anYcelery
parties in the underground flat, the women's swimming
and di\-ing team worked hard with Mr. Smith
and his computer programs to land multiple statequalifying
times. Shaved, tapered, and ready to kick
some butt, the twelve state qualifiers piled into the
red van on Thursday — only to kick bigger, paat&er
butt on their return to UDel on Saturday for the
finals.
The team thanks Mr. Liefeld for his countless
hours at the poo!, Ms. Lise Schickel for her inspiration
and time, and Came Klein for her supjjort and
help. Thanks to our managers Lindley, Angelica.
Ranee, and Patricia for their time put in before and
during the swim meets. The women owe a lot to
Limdy Smith for his unconditional dedication, time,
creativity, sense of humor, and especially for his
extraordinary ability to prepare us for performing at
our best level. We hope we did not faO you. Best of
luck to next year's team. We love you xoxo, Liads
and Linds.
Men's Basketball
90
This years Varsity Basketball team was an
incredibly talented group of athletes led by
captains, Matt Bostic, Eric Calder, and David
Smith. The team finished the season with a
12-8 record, and for the second straight year
missed going to the state tournament by a
few points. Perhaps the biggest game of the
season came against Tower Hill. This was a
Saturday night game with most of the school
present. The team came back from and early
seventeen point deficit to beat the Hitlers in
overtime.
While the team's emotions fluctuated
greatly throughout the course of the season
with tempers occasionally flying. The coaching
staff did an admirable job in keeping the
team together, and building a program for
the future. Congratulations go out to this
years All-Independent Conference players:
Matt Bostic-first team all conference, Eric
Calder-honorable mention all conference,
and David Smith-honorable mention all conference.
Congratulations also go out to sophomores
Sean Morley, Jim Maxfield, and
Frank Reynolds who all made significant
contributions in their first season with the
varsity. Thanks go to Sony Bures who broke
into the starting line-up late in the season.
And kudos go to freshman Sulemen Jenkins
who by seasons end became a player to be
reckoned with. Good luck to next years* team
who with strong senior leadership, and continued
development, will be the team to beat.
Let's Get Ready To Rumble!
92
The 1995-96 Basketball season
included many laughs and
frustrating sighs; and as a result
eleven improved players
emerged. Though we did not
win as many games as we had
hoped, our experiences were
gratifying as we became a
closely knit team. With the
help and guidance of Coaches
Sharkey, LeBlanc, and Bride,
we were able to recognize our
potential. With only three players
graduating, next year's
team promises to be strong
competitive threat. Watch out
for Penn's jump hook shot,
Anne at the point, Kristin and
Kate grabbing the boards, P.J.
and Alex swinging the ball, and
Pringle and Liz sinking shots
from the outside. Watch out for
them next year.
Wrestling
94
This year's wrestling team came into
the season as an inexperienced and
sparsely numbered group. Nonetheless,
through the tireless efforts of Coach
Carpenter, and through the determination
of the team, we finished a strong
6-6. The season's best performance
came against Episcopal High School, a
team that dominated us last year. This
year, Episcopal barely won, escaping
with a nine point victory decided in the
final bouts. With six wrestlers finishing
in the top three places at the DISC
Tournament, the year's team proved
that wrestling remains a strong tradition
at St. Andrew's. Notably, Mike
Evans finished fifth in the state at 152
pounds, and he will lead a strong group
of underformers back onto the mats
next year. Special thanks to Coach Carpenter,
whose selflessness and love for
the sport made this team's growth possible.
Thanks also to Emily McAlpin,
Myers for keeping us all overweight!!
Men's Squash
96
This year was a great success!
Under the fearless
leadership of Mr. Matusow,
the men's squash team won
the Mid-Atlantic Squash
Tournament after compiling
a 10-0 record during the regular
season. Three off these
victories came against the
formidable opposition of
Episcopal, Lawrenceville,
and Woodberry Forest.
Through a number of competitive
matches and a trek
to Episcopal High School in
Virginia, the men's squash
team became a cohesive unit
rolling over our opponents.
Mr. Matusow did an excellent
job not only leading us
to an undefeated season, but
creating a fun atmosphere
for squash.
Squash
Pump" It Out
Having lost the top seven players,
Varsity and JV Girls' Squash began the
season tentatively. However, led by
Lindsay Dormer and Molly Laramy,
the inexperienced newcomers rose to
the occasion and contributed their athleticism
and determination both on and
off the courts.
Because Kitchel, the budding squash
pro, was always "screaming somewhere,"
we rushed from match to
match burdened by diaper bags, attractive
puffy hats that made other coaches
jealous, and a curious odor that seemed
to follow one of our players everywhere
she went. Although we didn't have a
winning season, we came in a close
third at the fantastically competitive
Mid-Atlantic Squash Tournament.
Thanks to Mr Chilton and Mr
Stegernan for helping out at practices,
Ms LeBlanc for being our surrogate
coach, Mr Matusow for his aggressive
road warrior driving tactics, and especially
Mrs Chilton for providing us with
the most detailed preview of motherhood
anyone could ever wish for.
Good luck next year girls- love Taylor
Once Upon A Mattress
98
Given that the musical was
based in the Fifteenth Century and
was about a princess, a pea, and
twenty soft downy mattresses, it is
easy to get a feel for the humor
behind "Once Upon a Mattress."
Rehearsals began with high spirits
because the leads for the show,
Katy Wafle, Jurph, Doris, Richie,
Alex H., Meg A., and Kai are all
strong and dedicated performers
who were excited and prepared to
face the challenge of this musical.
The chorus members also proved
themselves by taking the show seriously
and supporting the leads at
every turn. Throughout the weeks
of grueling work, Mrs. McTaggert
kept everyone on their toes, and by
the time the infamous "Tech
Week" rolled around the show was
in fine form. The performances,
the crowning glory of all the hard
work, went on smoothly and were
enjoyed by all. Special thanks to
Mr. & Mrs. McTaggert for their
endless hours of hard work and to
Mr. Cheban, who practically rewrote
the musical score and artfully
directed the pit band.

But, of course, it was herself and her own adventure
that mattered to her. If youth did not matter
so much to itself, it would never have the heart to
go on. Thea was surprised that she did not feel a
deeper sense of loss at leaving her old life behind
her. It seemed, on the contrary ... that she had
left very little. Everything that was essential
seemed to be right there in the car with her. She
lacked nothing. She even felt more compact and
confident than usual. She was all there, and
something else was there, too- in her heart, was it,
or under her cheek? Anyhow, it was about her
somewhere, that warm sureness, that sturdy little
companion with whom she shared a secret.
them go, or when you
open the cage to feed them
they somehow fly out past
you. And the part of you
I could not stay here, for I had things to
do, and a promise to keep. However,
when I left, I carried the memory of
that place as if it were a diamond in my
pocket.
There is a road, no simple highway,
between the dawn and the
dark of night. And if you go, no
one may follow. That path is for
your steps alone.
The wind in the trees sounds like surf on
They said: leave your pebbles in the
And your shells, too, and come along.
We'll find another beach.
Let me listen to the wind in the trees ...
It sounds like surf on the shore.
Come along - we'll walk on another
shore.
Blest be the ties that bind.
When I know my sun will shine just as sure as this
Pooh nodded. "I promise," he said.
Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river
was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement
of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the
words, and some of the words are theirs.
The Sixth
Form
Thanks:
.,,.; Ms. Maull &
Mr. Lyons
Mr. Lyons and Ms. Maull were the
faculty advisors for the Class of 1996
for the better part of our St. Andrew's
career. They were each very supportive
in the own distinctly different ways.
Mr. Lyons was the all purpose person.
He would run any errand and lead any
trip-he even walked in the AIDS Walk
with us. Ms. Maull was in charge of the
bank accounts and pushed us to be
aware of our account balance and ways
which we could push it to swell. When
the form took on bigger projects, such
as the semi-formal, they were both
there to help us in whatever we needed.
However, they also relied on us to do
much of the work on our own, giving us
an excellent opportunity to realize
some responsibility. Although they
could not be at St. Andrew's for our senior
year, their influence is still with us
We will never forget J.L. cooking at the
grill during one of our many "bonding"
parties or Ms. Maull playing catch one
the lawn. We will also never forget
their hard work and dedication to the
form during our years at SAS.
light the lights^
ve got nothing
to hit but the heights!
It was hard to let you go:
To watch womanhood reach out and snatch you
Long before mothering was done.
But if God listened to mothers and gave in,
Would the time for turning loose of daughters ever
comeY
It was hard when you went away -
For how was I to know
The serendipity of letting go
Would be seeing you come home again
And meeting in a new way
Woman to woman -
Friend to friend.
Love you-A LOT,
Baseball
Take It Home!
This year's baseball team had a
season to be remembered. It was
emotionally difficult due to the loss
of two of our key players. But despite
all the obstacles in our path,
we earned our first .500 season in
three years. The team fought
through several battles, losing four
no-run ball games and coming back
to win several games in the last inning.
Led by seniors Richie Everts
and Reg Hargrove, the team gained
its two most satisfying victories in
the latter part of the season. One of
these victories was against rival
school Tatnall, where we came back
in the last inning to the score ten
runs and deliver Tatnall its only
conference loss. The other was
against a very experienced Lake
Forest team, which we won by a
score of 3 to 2, making three close
plays at the plate. These two games
brought the team's record to 9-9,
and were representative of the
team's hard work and determination
throughout the year. With six
starters returning next year, and a
few more prospects, we look forward
to another successful season.
Men's Crew
It's Not Your
Size It's How
You Use It
First of all, the men's varsity
crew would like to publicly deny all
charges of rerigging the women's
first shell. Our fingers are pointed
at the JV Baseball team.
After Mr. Brown decided (luckily)
not to kill us for our hilarious
April Fool's prank, we had to redeem
ourselves. Fortunately, we
were able to do this. Despite the
fact that the boat lineup changed
almost every race, we managed to
give the top schools in the nation a
close race.
Though not impressive in stature,
we made up for our deficient
size on the water. As one put it,
"Our navy is excellent, but we
would be destroyed in a land war."
The men's varsity eight placed
fourth at the Stotesbury Regatta in
Philadelphia. The next week we
placed fourth at the Scholastic Regatta,
missing third place by only
five tenths of a second after an incredible
race.
We did receive a gold medal at
the prestigious Mid-Hudson Regatta.
This race was particularly
fun because everyone on our boat
(first boat) was seriously outweighed
(except for the coxswain).
This race showed that, once again,
size doesn't matter, it's how you
use it.
Women's Crew
The '96 season was an all-around
success for the women's crew program.
Co-captains Lindsey Willis and
Kristen Douglas led the team in an astounding
season. The women's Varsity
Eight was filled with not only the
talent, but the determination to win.
At the Mid-Hudson Regatta they captured
gold and at New Jersey's they
finished second by 1.19 seconds to Thomas
Jefferson. In a breathtaking final
at the Stotesbury Regatta, the
Griffin beat out T.J., who they had
lost to in a preliminary heat, to capture
the silver medal. Meanwhile the
Caroline was having a tremendous
season. They were the first Junior
Eight to make the finals at Stotesbury
in three years. They finished their
season with a phenomenal fourth
place at Scholastic Nationals, missing
a bronze by only .26 seconds. The Senior
Eight B, enjoyed this spring being
coached by friend and alum Kelly
SchimmeL Some of them had the
honor of rowing on the first St. Andrew's
quad. The Freshmen eight
won not only a bronze at Stotesbury,
but the silver at Scholastic Nationals.
They, along with the rest of the women's
program owe Lise Shickel a great
deal of thanks for her tremendous
coaching skills; she will be greatly
missed next season. In addition we
would like to give thanks to assistant
coach Steve Lord for helping out with
the novices, and Mr. Statts for all of
his hard work. Most of all we would
like to thank the leadership and inspiration
of Mr. Bates who helped make
the *96 season an unforgettable one.
Men's Tennis
12
Lead by captain Erie Calder, and seniors
Court Heinle, Tim Laramy, and Curtis Snyder,
the men's varsity tennis finished with an
impressive (11-2) record with one of our losses
coming to the second place finisher in the
state tournament, Salesianum. Mr. Denning's
speech at the sports banquet pretty much
sums up our season. On any given day every
single player on the team was the most valuable
player, but the match that really comes
to mind is our clinching of the conference
championship at Tatnall with second doubles
(Charlie Leonard and David Sykes) splitting
sets and then asking Mr. Denning if they
would be heroes if they pulled out the third
set. Of course they did and clinched our second
straight conference championship. Other
important contributions came from Tim
Laramy and Box Veghte, who finished undefeated
in the regular season. Without this consistency
we could have not had the success
that we did. Court Heinle and Emmett Lynskey
both finished 10-3, challenging the state
champions in their semi-final rounds of the
state tournament. Dave and Charlie also
made it to the semi's of the state tournament.
With these strong finishes, our team placed
sixth in the state tournament.
Special thanks goes out to Mr. Matusow,
our assistant coach, who decided that coming
out in his "free time" meant coming to every
practice and home match. We could not have
enjoyed our success without him. Thanks go
as well to Mr. Colburn for his excellent scheduling
and pep talks, Mr. Simmons for giving
us a never-ending supply of balls, Mr. Stegeman,
our JV coach, Mrs. Roach and the backto-back
state champion women's team, and
our leader, on and off the court, Eric Calder.
State Champions ...
Again
The 1996 tennis season was
again a great success. Allison
Thomas and Megan Doherty,
the senior captains, worked
hard to unify the team and help
us win the state tournament.
In our regular season, we were
again conference champions after
finishing with a 15-1 record.
When the week of the state
tournament arrived, we filled
ourselves with water, bananas,
and pretzels and arrived in
Newark as an intimidating
force. Every player received a
bye in the first round and then
succeeded in winning both the
second and third rounds, an impressive
achievement for such a
group. In the fourth round,
Megan Doherty and Alexandra
Cox suffered a loss to Milford,
the #2 seed. Megan and Alexandra
played second doubles
and finished the regular season
undefeated. Pringle Claypoole,
the second singles player, also
lost to Megan Denher of Concord,
who went on to win the
state tournament. Pringle had
an impressive season and won
the "most improved player"
award.
Allison Thomas had an outstanding
season at first singles.
She upset the #1 player in the
state and played an elegant and
strong match in the finals of
the state tournament in a losing
effort. Kathryn Bohannon
beat the invincible Fran, her
nemesis of the season, in the
state tournament, after losing
to her two times before. Serena
Lehman and Cristin O'Brien
also won the state tournament
by playing tough, unbeatable
doubles.
The team could not have succeeded
without the help of both
Katie Watson and Elizabeth
Laffitte, our exhibition players,
Mr. Austin and his impressive
doubles skills, Mr. Matusow,
and especially Mrs. Roach, who
helped to elevate the team to
the position it deserved.
13
Men's Lacrosse
14
The 1996 lacrosse season ended in
fine form with the team finishing third
in the state of Delaware. This year the
team was young and filled with new recruits
which were not used to the intense
level of play in the Independent
Conference. Assistant Coach Dan
Mitchell, who also coached at Wilmington
Friends and at one time was an assistant
for the U.S. Naval Academy,
was the master mind behind the Saint's
offense all season. Head Coach Tom
Sturtevant, who had hand picked
Coach Mitchell, brought the team together
early in the season and said,
"Boys, Coach Mitchell has been around
the game of Lacrosse since you were in
diapers and he knows what he is doing.
So listen to him". The season started
off to a fast start with the Saints jumping
out to 2-0 record thanks to the vigorous
play of senior captains River Elliot
and Andrew Slater. The Saints finished
out the regular season on a six
game winning streak thanks to the incredible
goal keeping of Dave Bass.
Dave, however, had a lot of help from
the Saint's swarming defense, the core
of which was comprised of first year
long stick defense men Nick Barker
and Will Robinson. Although the offense
was centered around tenacious
mid fielder Andy Slater, it was the mixture
of attackmen John Landay, Than
Rhorbach, Sam Cox, and Jeff Gable
that usually ended up on the scoring
end of a feed. It was this great balance
of offense and defense which enabled
the Saints to reach the semifinals in
the state playoffs after beating Christiana
and Achilles heel Sanford. John
Landay summed up the year by saying,
"Nobody thought we would get this far,
we had a great season, and most importantly
we had a lot of fun."
First Row: Turner, Bass, Barker, Nick, Slater, Elliot, Smith, D., Love, Reynolds, S. Second
Women's Lax
This year's women's lacrosse
team had a fantastic season.
With a 12-2-2 record, losing
only to Tower Hill, we once
again proved to the conference
that the St. Andrew's women's
sports program is a force to be
reckoned with. This season, we
also expanded our horizons,
spending an awesome week
training in Hilton Head, S.C.,
and participating in a challenging
day-long tournament in
Washington, B.C. The team
will certainly miss the nine seniors
who contributed so much
to our team spirit and unity,
but with seven returning varsity
players and a JV team
loaded with talent, the St. Andrew's
women's lacrosse team
can look forward to considerable
success in the years to
come. We would like to thank
Mrs. Bride, Mrs. Chilton, Ms.
LeBlanc, and all our devoted
fans. Congratulations to MVP's
