Firecracker Chrysanthemum Series
from Jeffries Nurseries
Objective: To develop prairie hardy mums with flower colours and/or
plant forms that are new to the prairie group.
It has been over twenty years since a new prairie hardy mum has been
introduced. Most of the existing prairie cultivars have flowers that are
compact and limited flower colours. New hardy mums having large
flowers with fluted petals in different colours would be welcomed.
Crosses were made among chrysanthemums varieties from the Morden
and Minnesota series. It was clear to see that some of the resulting
hybrids flowered earlier than others. The early flowering seedlings
with outstanding blooms were selected and are being increased.

Hardy garden mums are a great addition to the fall landscape. These
mums flower in early September when most perennials and annuals
have stopped blooming. Garden chrysanthemums should be divided
every second year to ensure a healthy growing plant.
