And saplings root among the broken stone,
And dedicate – eyes bent upon the ground,
the italian company ceccotti introduced it’s name to the
furniture production industry in the late 1950s, led by
founder Aviero ceccotti. Known for its high-quality italian
furniture, the pieces are inspired by smooth shapes to
produce beautifully modern furniture. ceccotti’s materials
are hand-selected from all over the world and only the finest
materials are used. ceccotti is very particular about which
type of wood it uses and the sawing and woodwork is
performed by hand. each piece of wood used is representative
of different parts of the world and creates a different feel
with varying colours and wood grains.
105 A PAiR oF wASSiLY cHAiRS, designed by Marcel Breuer with leather straps and
tubular chrome frame. Dated approx 1960s.
Furniture designer and architect Marcel Breuer (1902-1981) was born in Hungary but later
went on to study and teach at the Bauhaus in Dessau. in 1925 while he was an apprentice
at the Bauhaus he designed the wassily chair. inspired by the handlebars of his bicycle he
began to design furniture using tubular steel, the seamless manufacturing of which had only
recently been invented by German steel manufacturer Mannesmann. Although not specifically
designed for wassily Kandinsky, he was always an admirer of the chair and Breuer made one
for his office.
In its first production run in the late 1920s the chair was known as the Model B3 and was
originally designed with fabric. Manufactured by thonet the chair’s simplicity of design was
so different that it failed to find favour with the public. Thonet ceased production of the chair
during world war ii.
in the 1960s Gavina of Bologna, italy began to reproduce the chair but this time it was upholstered with leather and named the wassily chair.
it was hugely successful. Gavina were eventually taken over by Knoll of new York who still produces the chair today.
the wassily chair received an Award of the Museum of Modern Art in 1968 and in 1982, it was recognized as a “Piece of Art,” in Germany. it is
a testament to the power of good design, a chair born of industrial evolution in the 1920s still looks as modern and innovative in the 21st century
as it did at the turn of the last.
Arne Jacobsen was a Danish architect
and designer. though associated
primarily with prestige in his most
famous architectural designs the legacy
of his entry in decorative art is one
surrounding the popular mass production
of this ‘Ant chair’. the unpretentious ‘Ant chair’ design became internationally famous only
months following its first showing at furniture titan Fritz Hansen’s 80th birthday. The design
proved to be Jacobsen’s big break and the design of this chair has endured into the present
time from the compositional inception in 1952. Jacobsen was an avid supporter of ultramodern
architecture and design and had an intuitive understanding of contemporary movements. this
no doubt greatly inspired the use of the tripod legs which were becoming ever more fashionable
into the 1950’s. though other designers of Jacobsen’s era preoccupied themselves with
functionalism, often at the expense of décor, Jacobsen himself was concerned with translating
contemporary innovations and combining them with functional furniture, though by no
means at the expense of originality.
the fashionable plywood seat and steel tripod legs hark back to the 1950’s and nod to the chairs
following of furniture connoisseurs as well as displaying the functionality desired by the consumers
of the era. in this way the Ant chair appealed to both the market for fashion and exclusivity as
well as explaining its enduring replication in the consumer market of mass production.
BY JoHAnneS HAnSen ciRcA 1949, with shaped back rail and arms, partially
copenhagen, Denmark.
Hans wegner’s career began with the designer and architects education being rooted in the
School of Arts and crafts in copenhagen. His chairs are primarily championed for their level of
high craftsmanship as well as their comfort. At a time when the furniture market was flooded by
imitations and pieces influenced by the Bauhaus style of Weimer, Wegner’s chairs were among
the first to reflect the new modernist movement and to exploit the opportunities provided by
increased standardization in furniture production. wegner designed furniture for manufacturers Johannes Hansen and Fritz Hansen throughout
his career and through the mass production of these firms his chairs earned the high status of classic yet comfortable chairs which helped mould
the modern design movement of the era.
the iconic design of this set of chairs gains its notoriety from its role in the Kennedy versus nixon debate of 1960. As Dara Flynn dutifully notes
this was the first ever televised live debate and so the role of the chair reached new parameters and fame through this auspicious event.
Especially imported from Denmark for the debate, the chair reflects the wider functionalist demands of the new domestic and interior sphere. Its
formal composition promotes comfort while meeting the age old demand for pleasing aesthetic in interior design. Hans wegner, a well-known
artist in the medium of furniture marries environmentalism with chic, fresh design and creates in this set an iconic and endurable style reflecting
the nixon and Kennedy era, yet remaining relevant and functional in the 21st century. interestingly the “the chair” was not so called by the
designer himself as he always allowed either the consumer or manufacturer to name his designs. the title, thus suggests the notoriety gained by
the populace and the high esteem paid to it by national popular culture.
Honore, Paris.
Philippe Starck (born 1949) is one of the world’s most famous
designers. He made his name as an interior and product
designer with his work on the trendy café costes in Paris
(1984), his Juicy Salif lemon squeezer for Alessi (1990) and
his transparent Louis Ghost chair (2002). Philippe Starck’s
breakthrough came in 1982 when then President Francois
Mitterrand asked him to redesign the private apartments of the
Elysée Palace (the French president’s official private residence).
He followed it two years later with the interior design of the
café costes, followed by the Royalton and Paramount hotels in
new York, the Delano in Miami and the Mondrian in Los Angeles.
the unique costes chair is one of Starck’s most recognized
classics. the practical reason behind the three-legged construction
of the costes chair was to ease waiter’s movement while
working in the café. the padded cushion creates comfortable
seating, while the curved backrest and tripod base create the
artistic visual profile of the chair and its fashionable appeal.
café costes closed its doors in 1994 and these are the chairs
that made it famous.
willy Rizzo started his career in Paris
as a photographer. His original venture
into furniture design began in Rome
and took place during a visit to a Roman
hair salon on Piazza di Spagna in 1966.
He ended up signing a six month
lease on an abandoned commercial
apartment, barely habitable and without
running water. Rizzo quickly set about
turning the empty office into a living
space, complete with brown and gold
walls and custom-designed sofas, coffee
tables, consoles and hi-fi storage
units. using a small group of local
artisans he completed the customised
apartment, which acted as a template of
sorts for the majority of his commissions
to come.
Rizzo’s friends, clients and contacts, many forming the upper crust of the fashion and film industries fell in love his ultra-modern
style which incorporated the sophistication of Mies van der Rohe and Le corbusier, combining clean, simple lines with bold
geometric forms and a delicate handling of materials. Salvador Dali commissioned a number of pieces as did Brigitte Bardot for the
interior of La Madrague in St. tropez. A playboy of the era, Rizzo’s client list is testament to how popular his furniture was at that time.
He established a base at tivoli, just outside Rome and went on to open boutiques across France and europe. He also had points
of sale in new York, Miami and LA.
