Sister Nirmala Joshi, Superior General of the Missionaries of Charity

Saint Vincent Archabbey Heart to Heart Winter 2007-2008
Dear Friends,
Blessed Christmas and a peaceful
2008 from the Benedictines of Saint Vincent
Archabbey.
In one of his advent homilies, Pope
Benedict XVI noted that “the surprising
gift of Christmas is exactly this: Jesus
came for each one of us and in him we
have become brothers and sisters... It
is precisely Jesus who makes us feel
at home on this earth... He asks us,
however, to make it a home in which
all are welcome... to increasingly overcome
preconceptions and prejudices,
to break down barriers and eliminate
the differences that divide us, or worse,
that set individuals and peoples against
one another, in order to build together a
world of justice and peace.”
A shining example of breaking down
barriers, eliminating differences that
divide, and building a world of peace
Archabbot’s Message
is the work of
Blessed Mother
Teresa of Calcutta.
This fall,
Saint Vincent
College hosted
the first- ever
symposium on
Mother Teresa,
in commemoration
of the tenth anniversary of her
death. Attending were Sister M. Nirmala
Joshi, M.C., successor to Mother Teresa
as Superior General of the Missionaries
of Charity, and many of the members of
the religious order who worked alongside
her.
Saint Vincent’s own missionary work
continues in Brazil and Taiwan. Members
of the Saint Anthony Community
at Caixa D’Agua welcomed me to their
new chapel during my visit to our São
Pope Benedict XVI welcomes some of the children whose parents are undergoing
treatment at Fazenda Esperança, in Guaratinguetá, state of São Paulo, Brazil. His Holiness
spent several hours at the rehabilitation center during his visit to Brazil in May.
Bento Monastery in Vinhedo. For many
years our Father Ermin Smith, who died
in 2006, worked with this community,
and the growth of Our Lady of Lourdes
Parish in this region is testament to
the work of Father Ermin and all of our
monks serving in Brazil.
Closer to home, both the College
and Seminary experienced increased
enrollment this academic year. The Fred
Rogers Centers for Early Learning and
Children’s Media nears completion and
plans are underway for continuing the
wonderful legacy of Fred Rogers as
the “conscience” of children’s media.
Our Campus Ministry at Saint Vincent
College is growing, moving into a new
home. This summer, Brother Matthias
Martinez and Brother Michael Miller
professed solemn vows, while Brother
Dominic Greco professed simple vows.
We also welcomed four novices to the
community. We also had two monks
ordained to the diaconate. One of
the deacons, Brother Matthias Martinez,
will be ordained to the priesthood
in January, while the other deacon,
Brother Michael Gabler, will be ordained
to the priesthood in May. Father Shawn
Matthew Anderson was ordained to the
priesthood.
This summer we also welcomed
Coach Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh
Steelers, along with thousands of fans,
to the team’s 41st annual training camp
here. We dedicated the Chuck Noll Field,
named in honor of the esteemed, retired
coach who took the team to four Super
Bowl championships. This fall football
also returned to Saint Vincent College,
after an absence of 45 years. Several
thousand alumni and friends attended
the first game.
You and your loved ones will be
remembered by the Benedictine community
of Saint Vincent Archabbey in
Masses to be offered at midnight and
on Christmas Day at the Archabbey
Basilica.
Heart to Heart,
from the Latin “Cor ad Cor Loquitur,”
or “Heart Speaks to Heart,”
is the motto of Archabbot Douglas
R. Nowicki, O.S.B. It refers to
the Archabbot’s prayer that giving
and receiving authentic love may
always be the chief characteristic
of the Saint Vincent monastic community.
This was also the motto of
John Henry Cardinal Newman.
Father Sebastian Samay, O.S.B, Father Philip Kanfush, O.S.B., and Father
Thomas More Sikora, O.S.B., displayed their fine hand-woven pieces and other
fiber artworks. Brother Mark Floreanini, O.S.B., and Brother Michael Gabler, O.S.B.,
displayed their paintings, pen and ink, and pastel drawings, while Father Ananias
Buccicone, O.S.B., Father Paul-Alexander Shutt, O.S.B., and Brother André Melli,
and pieces of calligraphy by Brother Michael Antonacci, O.S.B. A feature story on
the exhibit with photos appeared in the October 29, 2007, edition of the Tribune-
Review. The article noted the many and varied talents of the monks.
Though Father Thomas More’s undergraduate and graduate degrees were in philosophy
and divinity, he learned the art of weaving from Father Sebastian during his
time as a novice. His hand-woven items have been exhibited at the Westmoreland
concerns his year of ethnographic
fieldwork in Egypt. Father Mark spoke
in San Antonio, Texas, to the “Legatus
Chapter” about comparative religions
News From Around The Archabbey
in the Near East. Legatus is a nationally
dispersed Catholic first tier business
leaders’ society.
He also addressed the Saint Vincent
College closing faculty symposium on
the subject of Teilhard de Chardin. The
expositor of the Thomas Merton corpus.
He invited the review and more recently
has invited Father Mark to give retreat
conferences at the renowned Trappist
Abbey.
He also traveled to San Diego this
summer as an expert witness in an
“Article 32,” grand jury-style hearing in
Camp Pendleton. The hearing was part
of the military’s investigations into Iraqi
wartime allegations, and Father Mark
was invited through the services of the
Thomas More Society to address the
court concerning
cultural features
of the wartorn
setting. His
fieldwork as an
anthropologist in
the Middle East
as well as publications
and public
conferences
on a variety of
related cultural concerns brought him
to the attention of the legal staff in the
case.
Father Mark presented the October
11 Walsh University Artists and Lecturers
Series conference. His presentation
entitled, “The Catholic Intuition of
but were instructed not to wear bright colors. Tartans have become synonymous with
Scotland and Scottish clans and families in particular. However, tartans were originally a
style of cloth intended to be decorative, as the table runners at bottom indicate.

Saint Vincent Pays Tribute
To Mother Teresa
“Remembrances of Mother Teresa
of Calcutta by Her Family and Friends”
was the topic of a symposium held in
October at Saint Vincent College on the
tenth anniversary of her death.
Sr. M. Nirmala Joshi, M.C., Superior
General of the Missionaries of Charity
and Mother Teresa’s successor, travelled
from Calcutta to keynote the conference.
She was accompanied by other
members of the religious order Mother
Teresa founded in 1950. The order has
grown to more than 4,500 members
who serve the homeless, unwed mothers,
persons suffering from AIDS and
others in need in 134 countries.
A panel discussion featured Mother
Teresa’s niece, Agi Bojaxhiu of Italy; Rev.
Brian Kolodiejchuk, M.C., co-founder of
the priestly branch of the Missionaries
of Charity and who is the postulator of
Mother Teresa’s cause of beatification
and author of Mother Teresa: Come Be
My Light; Jan Petrie, Mother Teresa’s
travel companion and co-producer of
two films about her; friends and collaborators
Dr. Warren and Patty Kump
and Sandy McMurtrie; and Saint Vincent
College President Jim Towey, her friend
and former legal counsel. Towey went to
Calcutta eight times and last year took a
group of college students there to work
in her missions. The conference was
televised on the Eternal Word Television
Network.
Brother Elijah Cirigliano, O.S.B., performed
a vocal and piano solo of a song
he wrote about Mother Teresa. (The song
can be heard on the archabbey website,
www.saintvincentarchabbey.org).
“We are excited to co-host this firstever
forum on Mother,” Towey said.
“The conference focused on the person
of Mother Teresa through the telling of
stories by those who knew her best.”
President Towey met Mother Teresa
in 1985 and eventually became her legal
representative. He worked at her missions
in Mexico and at a home for AIDS
patients in Washington, D.C.
“Knowing her and being around her
was a constant reminder that I wasn’t a
saint, because I saw what a saint was”
he told Maryann Gogniat Eidemiller in
The Latrobe Bulletin. “She didn’t think
of herself as special, but she was holy,
and in some ways, she was the last to
know it.”
Mother Teresa, who won the Nobel
Peace Prize, continues to inspire countless
people throughout the world. She
died September 5, 1997, and was beatified
by His Holiness Pope John Paul II
on October 20, 2003.
Her successor, Sister Nirmala, was
educated by Christian missionaries who
sparked her interest in Catholicism.
Sister Nirmala joined the Missionaries
of Charity in 1950, just a year after its
founding.
During the opening press conference,
she was asked how people of different
religions can get along. “Works of love
unite all people in love,” she replied. “‘I
am nothing special,’ she would say. In
her ‘nothingness’ she showed his glory.
She wanted to remain hidden, but the
Lord shined on her and made her known.
Thanks to her spiritual director who kept
her letters, we now know about the
inner workings (of Mother Teresa) and
the workings of God.”
Mother Teresa’s niece, Agi Bojaxhiu,
noted that her aunt always placed high
importance on family. “Family is the
heart of life, the heart of society. ... You
must keep your family together; family
comes first,” she said.
Long-time friend and physician Dr.
Patricia Aubanel added that “she would
never think of herself. She was always
thinking of others.”
“Mother Teresa was a shining example
of holiness in a life of dedication to the
most neglected of human society, the
poorest of the poor,” Father Kolodiejchuk
said. In discussing his book he
noted that “we are now in a position
to know about Mother Teresa’s interior
life and what she lived through all those
years. ... She spoke of faith and love,
and she spoke of an unbroken union.”
While there were times when she felt a
Brother Nathan Cochran, O.S.B.,
has been
named the new
director of The
Saint Vincent
Concert Series.
The series is in
its 36th season
and was
founded by
Father Joseph
B r o n d e r ,
O.S.B.
The concert
series brings
a number of
international
musicians to
the Saint Vincent
campus
each year to present world-class concerts
to the greater community, as well
as faculty, staff and students. Coming
from a musical background and family,
Brother Nathan participated in various
choirs, orchestras and concert bands
and was a soloist in musicals, operas
and oratorios throughout Ohio. Before
entering the monastic community at
Saint Vincent Archabbey, he studied
vocal music at the College of Musical
Arts at Bowling Green State University
and was a student of Rex Eikum.
He received a master of science
degree from Pratt Institute, with honors,
in the Theory, History and Criticism of
Art, Architecture and Design.
In addition to the concert series, at
Saint Vincent College he is the director
of The Saint Vincent Gallery and a
lecturer in fine arts.
Father Brian Boosel, O.S.B., instructor in Church History at Saint Vincent College,
had an article on the Saint Vincent Archabbey Basilica published in Sacred Architecture,
the scholarly Journal of the Institute of Sacred Architecture, June 2006 issue.
Father Brian’s article focused on the importance of the design and artwork of the
Archabbey Basilica and its ties to the local church and the Benedictine Order.
Father Stephen Honeygosky,
O.S.B., Ph.D, Seton Hill University’s
Chaplain, assistant professor of English,
and associate director of Campus
Ministry, is teaching a new course, “The
Bible as Literature.”
“I think this is a good way to do several
things: first, foster education on
the Bible, which will be the topic of the
October 2008 Synod in Rome; second,
respond to interest in the Bible at present
across the
culture (both academic
and popular)
and among
all age groups
including young
adults; and third,
contribute in
a unique way
here at Seton
Hill through my
double role as English professor and
Chaplain,” said Father Stephen.
“The Bible as Literature” is an introductory
course in reading the Bible, and
includes, selectively, both the Hebrew
and Christian Bibles (commonly referred
to as the Old and New Testaments). The
intent of the course is to approach the
Bible as a literary text, and to read it,
Tribute To
Mother Teresa
(Continued from Page 7)
sense of loss, loneliness and darkness,
he said, “the thirst of Jesus—the thirst
for our love and the thirst for our souls—
gave a special meaning to her life.”
Drawing a comparison with the
founder of the Benedictine order, Saint
Benedict, Father Robert Conroy, M.C.,
homilist at the opening Mass of the conference,
noted that “Benedict said that
the monastery was his world. Mother
Teresa said that the world was her convent.”
Father Conroy, superior general
of the Missionaries of Charity Fathers,
said, “they are united by their burning
love of God and they are like two paintings
drawn by the same hand. Seen
under the proper light, their lives seem
to run together.”
He noted that people who worked with
Mother Teresa knew she was someone
special, but also knew she was someone
who was very approachable. “She
wasn’t just a story in a book or an action
hero,” he said. “She was our mother,
someone we could approach.”
He added that the publication of the
book on Mother Teresa “opens a whole
new dimension of the person we thought
we knew.”
“Mother Teresa is our inspiration,”
he said. “She is ours. She is a saint of
modern times. What she would want for
us is that we draw closer to the one she
loves eternally.”
Saint Vincent Archabbey Heart to Heart Winter 2007-2008
Saint Vincent College’s Campus Ministry
is an essential part of student life on
campus. For students, Campus Ministry
could mean learning about their faith or
growing spiritually or it could simply be
a place to meet with friends with similar
interests. No matter what the reason
students gather together they can now
do it in a larger and more inviting space.
Campus Ministry recently moved from
its location in Gerard Hall, a residence
hall, to its new home on the ground floor
of Alcuin Hall.
”I’m very pleased with the move.
We have almost quadrupled the space
which makes way for new opportunities,”
commented Katie Wojtunik, Campus
Minister. The largest space is the
lounge area, where students will find
comfortable sofas and chairs, a television,
games and books. The lounge offers
an area where students can meet
and feel at home.
”The new location also allows us to
have a conference room where small
groups of students can meet. When it
is not being used by small groups, students
can feel free to use it as a study
area. Sometimes students want to get
out of their residence hall and need
somewhere else to go to study and
Campus Ministry Gets New Home
Rev. Vincent Zidek, O.S.B.
think. This conference room offers that,”
explained Father Vincent Zidek, O.S.B.,
who was recently named Director of
Campus Ministry.
In addition to the lounge and conference
room, there is a study center that
will have computers with Internet access
so students can do research, work
on assignments or just surf the internet.
A counseling room is also available for
students who may need to talk to someone
about issues going on in their lives.
Campus Ministry will continue its
many events and programs such as the
spring break service trip to an orphanage
in Brazil, Meals on the Boulevard, Hunger
Garden and Sports Friendship Day
while adding new programs and events.
One program that is new this year is the
R.C.I.A. program, which stands for Rite
of Christian Initiation of Adults.
“This program is for those who may
not be Catholic but would like to learn
more about the Catholic faith and also
may decide to join the Catholic church.
This program will allow students to meet,
learn and discuss the faith with each other.
It allows them to go through this program
together rather than alone,” said
Father Vincent. “We are also adding an
Oblate program. Saint Vincent College
is rich in the Benedictine heritage and
many people want to incorporate the
Benedictine beliefs into their own lives.
This is what this program is about.”
Campus Ministry also offers a weekly
Bible study and is hoping to begin a new
monthly theology discussion group for
students. “Many colleges offer what is
called ‘Theology on Tap.’ It provides a
more relaxed and laid-back atmosphere
where students can enjoy each other’s
company, food and drink and still carry
on their discussions of faith and theology,”
said Wojtunik.
New Driveway At Gristmill
The Saint Vincent Gristmill has a new paved entryway. The driveway enters the site from the east side of the building and travels
behind the Gristmill and past the Coffeehouse entry, to access the General Store, Museum and Coffeehouse. The driveway provides
for two vehicles to easily pass each other and provides better access for tour bus traffic. Access to the Saint Vincent Wetlands can
also be gained this way. The driveway project was made possible through the generosity of the Katherine Mabis McKenna Foundation,
Allegheny Foundation, Westmoreland County Tourism Grant Program, and the Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor.
Saint Vincent College blessed and
dedicated the Chuck Noll Field on August
2, prior to the Steelers’ evening practice.
The Field was named after the legendary
Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Chuck
Noll, who led the NFL team to four Super
Bowl victories in the 1970s. As it has
been for the past 41 years, training camp
for the Pittsburgh Steelers was held at
Saint Vincent during that time period.
Father Paul R. Taylor, O.S.B., Vice
Over a thousand students, alumni,
past players, and fans filled the stands
at newly-dedicated Chuck Noll Field
during the first Saint Vincent Football
game in 45 years. In an article featured
in USA Today, Head Coach Bob Colbert
explained his goals for the season. “At
the end of the year, 10 wins or zero wins,
as long as we got it started, and the college
deems this as a good addition to
the athletic program and to the school,
then this year is a success”.
Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve Opens
Congested strip malls and roads
clogged with construction are becoming
commonplace to locals and visitors
to Saint Vincent. However, the Winnie
Palmer Nature Reserve, recently opened
to the public, is preserving the landscape
closer to campus. The reserve’s
grand opening on September 9 offered
guided tours and lectures, revealing the
possibilities of the center as an environmental
and educational resource.
The concept for the nature sanctuary
began as a vision of Winnie Palmer,
golf legend and Latrobe native Arnold
Palmer’s late wife. More than 20 years
ago news of impending plans to commercially
develop the land surrounding
Saint Vincent inspired Winnie to gather
support to prevent development. Her
dream has finally reached fruition. Visitors
toured the renovated barn and the
historic Lochry Blockhouse, walked the
nature trails and listened to lectures.
“Not only did she have strong feelings
of opposition to large commercial developments,
but she was sensitive to the
community desires,” Winnie’s daughter,
Amy Saunders said.
Following Winnie’s death in 1999, a
nonprofit organization established a
trust in her honor. Now the area is an
educational and environmental showpiece
featuring plant and animal ecosystems
native to the region. In 2001,
the trust secured 50 acres of land for the
reserve, 25 of which were leased from
Saint Vincent Archabbey.
“Winnie Palmer was a woman who
cared so much about the people and
the environment that there could be no
finer tribute to her than preserving the
character of this beautiful land,” said
Archabbot Douglas R. Nowicki, O.S.B.
Arnold Palmer, who attended the
opening, affirmed that his late wife’s
vision was fulfilled, remarking, “her original
goal has been surpassed.”
In the future, the Winnie Palmer Nature
Reserve will offer community and school
nature programs. “The possibilities are
endless,” director of the reserve, Angela
Belli said. “ It’s going to be a place that’s
for a lot more than nature.”
Baptism of the
Lord Window
2007 Basilica Ornament Features Guardian Angels Window
The new Christmas ornament this year is the triptych window of the Guardian Angels one in a series of collectibles from the
Archabbey Basilica. In August of 1855, Pope Pius IX—now Blessed Pope Pius IX—declared the Holy Guardian Angels to be the
patrons of the American-Cassinese Congregation of Benedictine abbeys. The center panel of this triptych window portrays a
Guardian Angel with his arms about a young girl, dressed in blue and a young boy, who wears a brown tunic, as they make their
way along a path. The boy clings to the angel for protection from a red snake, coiled as if to strike in the lower right foreground
of the window, while the girl’s upturned face and folded hands suggest a stance of prayer. The side panels of the window depict
scenes from the Book of Tobit. The left panel portrays the Archangel Raphael accompanying young Tobiah on his journey from
Ninevah to Rages in Media. The Archangel carries a traveler’s staff in his right hand, while his left hand is outstretched in a
posture of teaching. Tobiah looks at the Archangel Raphael attentively as he carries his staff in his left hand. His dog, which
Scripture records accompanied the pair, frolics in the foreground. In the right panel, Tobiah greets his father Tobit upon his safe
return to his parents’ home as his mother Anna and the Archangel Raphael look on. Ornaments from previous years include:
2006, the Saint Benedict and Saint Scholastica triptych window; 2005, the triptych window of Saint Vincent de Paul, done in
honor of the 100th Anniversary of the consecration of the Archabbey Basilica; 2004, the Baptism of the Lord Window; 2003, the
Agnus Dei, or Lamb of God, artwork from the Archabbey Basilica. These and additional ornaments are available in the College
Bookstore, Basilica Gift Shop and on the website www.stvincentstore.com.
foster parents for infant children through
the Children’s Home of Pittsburgh. They
are the parents of five children: John,
Margaret, Claire, Teresa, and Patrick.
The Red Mass has a long history
within the Catholic Church dating back
to the thirteenth century when it marked
the official opening of the new term for
courts in most European countries.
The participants in the celebration
of the Red Mass—clergy, government
officials, lawyers and judges—would
process into the church clothed in red
vestments, signifying their plea for the
Holy Spirit’s guidance in pursuing justice
in their daily lives. The Diocese of
Greensburg and Saint Vincent Archabbey,
College and Seminary have jointly
sponsored the Red Mass in this Diocese
since 1968.
Camerata Prepares For Another Season
By Laura Gerhart
The Saint Vincent Camerata helped
usher in the holiday season with its
annual Christmas Concert in the Saint
Vincent Archabbey Basilica. Under the
direction of Rev. Cyprian G. Constantine,
O.S.B., the 16 members who comprise
the Camerata performed the traditional
“Lessons and Carols for Christmas” in
costumes reminiscent of the Baroque
period.
Through song and Scripture readings,
the story of Christmas was retold in a
heartwarming format that has become
characteristic of the Camerata. A beautiful
combination of religious hymns
from the Baroque period and traditional
Christmas carols are intertwined with
scripture lessons read by Saint Vincent
students, staff and Benedictines, to
bring joy and renewed insight to the true
meaning of the Christmas season.
Father Cyprian, who had been
involved in the Camerata since 1972,
became Director again in 1998. He said
he enjoys the impression that the performances
leave on its audiences. “It has
a great impact on Catholics and Non-
Catholics and even people of no faith at
all. It’s great to be able to provide that
kind of impact on the community.” However,
the audience members, who are
encouraged to sing along during familiar
Members of the Saint Vincent Camerata with Father Cyprian G. Constantine, O.S.B.,
dress in period costume for a rehearsal.
Christmas carols, are not the only ones
who reap spiritual benefi ts from the
Camerata’s uplifting performances.
Cathy Kunkle, who has been singing
with the Camerata for over 25 years,
considers her involvement with the choir
group a critical element of her inner
strength and spiritual growth. “This
is my refuge. I come here and I leave
everything else out there and just sing...
This fulfi lls a need for me, but I think that
what’s important is that you use your
voice for the Lord our God.”
Now in its 39th season, the Camerata
continues to offer the community a
unique outlet to celebrate the miracles
of Jesus. The Saint Vincent Camerata
will next be performing a Lenten-style
concert in March in preparation of the
Easter season.
is unique program enacted by Congress allows donors age 70.5 and above to make a gift up to
$100,000 directly from a retirement account with no tax implications.
e U.S. Congress may consider an extension to the law; however, as of early November, this tax
advantage ends December 31, 2007.
Gristmill Work Named
Best Of Show
Latrobe Art League members paid tribute to the historic
Saint Vincent Gristmill with an exhibit, “Flour Power.” The
theme and location of the exhibit at the Gristmill Museum
were selected by Brother Mark Floreanini, O.S.B., and Peg
Panasiti of the Art League. Artists were challenged by the
themed exhibit to capture scenes of the mill or something
related to bread and the baking of bread.
A piece of artwork by Brother Mark, “Saint Vincent Gristmill,”
which was featured in the Latrobe Art League’s monthlong
exhibit was named “Best of Show” for the exhibit.
Artwork ranged from a still life of flour sacks and other
items to a sliced loaf of Saint Vincent bread to water color
scenes and exterior scenes of the Gristmill. Some of the 26
pieces of artwork even featured the Gristmill cat as well as
items baked with Gristmill products. The Best of Show piece
by Brother Mark will adorn the cover of the 2009 “All About
Latrobe” calendar.
New Season
For Way Of
The Cross
By Liz Cousins
Special performances of The Way of
the Cross, a dramatic and musical presentation
of the Stations of the Cross,
are set for March 6-9, 2008. Written
by Brother Elijah Cirigliano, O.S.B., the
show was performed 19 times in New
York and Connecticut, before making its
Pennsylvania debut in February 2007.
Letters, including a special preview
CD of the music, were mailed to pastors
and Catholic school principals at
parishes and schools in the dioceses of
Greensburg, Pittsburgh, and Altoona-
Johnstown, inviting groups to attend.
Morning performances on Thursday
and Friday, March 6 and 7 are reserved
for Catholic school groups. Performances
for the public, including parish
groups, CCD programs, and youth
groups, are set for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday
and Friday, March 6 and 7, and for
2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, March
8 and 9, and will take place in the Saint
Vincent Theater in Carey Hall. Cost is
$10 per adult and $5 per student, with
all proceeds from the show going to
support vocation programs at Saint Vin-
A Life of Service
The Benedictine Community of Saint
Vincent has 200 monks who devote
their lives to serving the needs
of people through a wide variety of
pastoral, educational, and missionary
works, both at Saint Vincent
and throughout the world. While the
older monks remain active well past
retirement age, they face the same
financial hardships that other retirees
do — rising health care costs
and increasing living expenses. The
Monastery Health Care and Retirement
Fund provides older priests
and brothers the care they need after
their many years of service to the
people of God.
Prior to joining the Benedictine community
at Saint Vincent, Brother Elijah
worked as a Musical Director at Saint
Mary Parish in Katonah, New York. The
pastor there encouraged Brother Elijah
to write a musical piece that became
The Way of the Cross. The 2008 performances
Solve Your Tax Problems Before Year’s End!
If you are like most Americans, as
the holidays approach you are not only
thinking about your duties with families
and friends, but also about your
obligations to Uncle Sam! Here
are a few tax-saving tips for
your year-end tax planning.
You have just a few weeks to
take advantage of the Pension
Protection Act of 2006. This
change to the rules regarding
qualified retirement
accounts, accounts, such as IRAs
and 401Ks, will expire
at the end of 2007. In
summary, if you are
age 70.5 or older,
this change in regulation
allows you to
make a charitable
contribution from
your retirement
account (up to
$ 1 0 0 , 0 0 0 )
with no
tax consequence
to
you! Under
the previous
regula-
Name
Address
tion, you would first need to pay taxes
on the funds you withdraw from your
account, and then you could claim the
gift as a deduction. In many cases,
this resulted in a negative tax consequence.
Unless Congress acts to extend
this benefit, gifts made after December
31, 2007, will fall under the old
regulation.
Also, another vehicle that will
enable you to save taxes is a
Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA).
By opening a CGA with Saint
Vincent Archabbey as the
Beneficiary, you enjoy the
following benefits:
• Enjoy an immediate
tax deduction on a portion
of your gift annuity
• Receive guaranteed
quarterly dividend
payments for
as long as you live
• Know that
upon your
passing, the
r e m a i n i n g
principal of your
gift will go directly
City State
Zip Phone
to Saint Vincent
Archabbey and will
not be subject to
estate taxes
Finally, if you
have appreciated
stock or real estate
that you plan to
sell, you can minimize
the impact on
your annual taxes
by sharing your
gains with Saint
help us to continue our long-standing
