16. General<br />

Section IIIl. DUTIES OF KEY PERSONNEL<br />

The platoon leader <strong>and</strong> noncommissioned officers in the scout<br />

platoon must be capable of effectively employing the personnel<br />

<strong>and</strong> equipment for which they are responsible. These leaders<br />

must be able to react swiftly to changing situations <strong>and</strong> perform<br />

with speed <strong>and</strong> daring. Each must be able to employ his element<br />

alone or as part of a combined arms team.<br />

<strong>17</strong>. Duties of <strong>Platoon</strong> Leader<br />

Although the scout platoon leader is directly responsible to the<br />

headquarters <strong>and</strong> headquarters company comm<strong>and</strong>er of the parent<br />

battalion for the discipline, combat readiness, training, <strong>and</strong><br />

control of his platoon, <strong>and</strong> for its maintenance, <strong>and</strong> equipment,<br />

the platoon is employed tactically under control of the battalion<br />

comm<strong>and</strong>er. The platoon leader must have a thorough knowledge<br />

of battalion tactics <strong>and</strong> be proficient in the tactical employment<br />

of the platoon. He must know the capabilities <strong>and</strong> limitations<br />

of the personnel <strong>and</strong> equipment in the platoon <strong>and</strong> must be<br />

thoroughly familiar with all aspects of armor comm<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> leadership<br />

as discussed in <strong>FM</strong> <strong>17</strong>-1.<br />

18. Duties of <strong>Platoon</strong> Sergeant<br />

The scout platoon sergeant comm<strong>and</strong>s elements of the platoon<br />

as directed by the platoon leader <strong>and</strong> assumes comm<strong>and</strong> of the<br />

platoon in the absence of the platoon leader. During tactical operations,<br />

he may assist in control of the platoon. The platoon<br />

sergeant assists the platoon leader in maintaining discipline, in<br />

training, <strong>and</strong> in maintaining control of the platoon. He assists<br />

also in matters pertaining to maintenance of equipment, supply,<br />

<strong>and</strong> other administrative matters of the platoon.<br />

19. Duties of Section <strong>and</strong> Squad Leaders<br />

Section leaders are responsible to the platoon leader for the<br />

training, discipline, tactical employment, <strong>and</strong> control of their<br />

sections. They closely supervise the maintenance <strong>and</strong> operation of<br />

all vehicles <strong>and</strong> equipment organic to their units. Squad leaders<br />

have generally the same responsibilities with respect to their<br />

squads as section leaders have to their sections.<br />
