SAFETY
IN
LPG STORAGE,
BOTTLING
&
TRANSPORTATION

SAFETY IN LPG STORAGE
• PRECAUTIONS FOR STORAGE OF LPG IN BULK :
1) Liquid level in the vessel shall not exceed the permissible
limits.
2) Vessel shall be inspected daily for any LPG leakage and
corrective action taken.
3) All gauges, viz. High level alarm, measuring gauges,
pressure gauges, temperature gauges should be kept in
operating condition at all times and be checked daily.
• SAMPLING
Following safety precautions shall be followed during sampling :
1) Special sampling bombs shall be used for LPG sampling.
Arrangement of rupture disc or any other suitable safety
relief device shall be incorporated in the sampling bomb.

SAFETY IN LPG STORAGE
2) Sampling bombs shall be inspected periodically and tested
hydrostatically at regular intervals. Record of such
inspection/test shall be maintained.
3) Sample bombs shall be earthed effectively before and
during discharge of sample.
4) LPG samples shall be collected only in open/ventilated
areas and the person taking the sample shall stand on the
windward side.
5) The sampler shall wear protective goggles, hand gloves,
shoes etc. while taking samples.
6) Samples, after collection, shall be properly labeled and
kept at designated place.

SAFETY IN LPG STORAGE
• DRAINING
1) Storage vessel should be drained regularly for its water
content, sediments, caustic contents etc. Draining
operation should be carried out under the supervision of
an authorised person.
2) For draining of water from LPG vessels , following
procedure shall be followed :
a) The valve nearer to the vessel shall be opened first and
closed. Then, draining shall be carried out by gradually
opening the valve farther from the vessel. The operation
shall be repeated till LPG release starts.

SAFETY IN LPG STORAGE
b) It shall be ensured that the drain outlet is at a safe distance
from the vessel so that accidental ignition of any escaping
vapour would not expose the vessel to flame impingement.
c) It is important not to attempt removal of the entire
quantity of water as considerable liquid LPG may escape in
the process. At the first sign of appearance of LPG, the
operation shall be stopped. Escape of LPG may lead to
formation of ice block at the valve seat, preventing closure
of valve. This will result in escape of uncontrolled vapour to
the atmosphere causing a very serious hazard.

SAFETY IN LPG STORAGE
• FIRE ON STORAGE VESSEL :
1) If a pressure vessel is exposed to radiant heat from external
fire, it should be kept cool by water sprays to prevent
excessive pressure rise in the vessel. Cooling the vessel with
water sprays reduces the heat input to the vessel and
thereby reduces the pressure, thus, reducing the rate of
discharge from the relief valves.
2) If fire enters LPG storage area, concentrate available cooling
water on LPG vessels, most affected.
3) Do not try to empty LPG vessels exposed to fire. They
become more vulnerable to overheating as their liquid
content decreases.

SAFETY IN LPG STORAGE
• FIRE OF LPG VAPOUR ESCAPING FROM A DAMAGED VESSEL
FITTING (FLAME NOT PLAYING ON VESSEL)
1) Allow fire to continue till exhaustion.
2) Spray vessel with water to cool it.
3) Cool adjacent vessels and structures.
• FIRE IN OIL STORAGE AREA ADJACENT TO LPG STORAGE :
1) Start water sprays only on those LPG vessels exposed to fire/
heat. Isolate affected vessels and run out fire water hoses in
case hose stream cooling becomes necessary.
2) If LPG vessel's SRVs have started blowing vapour, continue
cooling of the vessel.
