‘Managing the head & neck cancer patient – current concepts, pathways & problem solving’
presented by Nadine Lawson and Bena Riddle
A one-day workshop in Perth on Friday 4 December 2009
8.30 am registration for 9.00 am start; concludes at 4.30 pm
Earlybird Closing: 4 November 2009
This event is designed for speech pathologists who have a basic knowledge of head and neck cancer
management. Registrants for this workshop will be expected to have an understanding of the theoretical
background of laryngectomy/pharyngolaryngectomy and tracheo-esophageal speech. The workshop will
not focus on the problem solving associated with successful acquisition of tracheo-esophageal speech but
may include dysphagia management of the complex laryngectomy/pharyngolaryngectomy. The workshop
will focus primarily on assessment and management of patients presenting with oral and pharyngeal cancer.
Prior experience working with head and neck cancer patients will be beneficial but not essential for this
event. The workshop will be focused at an intermediate-advanced level.
At the conclusion of the event the participants will have:
• an understanding of the different types of head & neck surgical procedures currently used and their
impact on speech and swallowing
• an understanding of the latest & currently used types of chemo/radiation therapy regimes and
associated toxicities
• ability to outline assessment and management strategies with complex head and neck cancer
cases
• ability to predict likely dysphagia patterns during and post treatment
• awareness of multi-disciplinary team management strategies and clinical pathways available with
this patient group
• ability to recognise clinical indicators for and benefits of instrumental dysphagia assessment with
head and neck patients.
It is well accepted that head and neck cancer management is complex and multi-faceted. The variable
presentation of this type of cancer, the different treatment regimes available, the potential for significant
functional impairments following this treatment and the individual needs of each patient make this clinical
area challenging for all members of the multidisciplinary team. This event will provide participants with an
update regarding the current treatment of head and neck cancer. The latest evidence will be presented
regarding surgical techniques for oral, pharyngeal and laryngeal carcinoma, as well as current radiotherapy
and chemo-radiotherapy regimens and likely treatment related toxicity. Consequential communication and
swallowing difficulties, recovery, clinical pathways and prognosis will be discussed with a focus on
multidisciplinary management, and objective assessment. Participants will receive information in both a
lecture format, as well as small group practical sessions involving discussion and problem-solving with the
speakers. A number of “real cases” will be used to illustrate the workshop content and facilitate problem
solving activities. Where possible video clips and instrumental assessment video footage will be utilised.
Nadine graduated from La Trobe University, Melbourne in 1996. She worked at the Royal Melbourne
Hospital in the Head & Neck Surgery unit for 12 years. In 2008 she joined the Princess Alexandra Hospital
Speech Pathology department and continues to work in the area of Head & Neck. In 2002 Nadine
completed an overseas study tour and upon her return helped establish the Dr Blom course in Australia and
initiated a clinical research project to develop the use of botox for patients who fail to acquire successful
tracheo-esophageal speech. Nadine has presented at national and international conferences, she has coordinated
workshops for Speech Pathologists and multidisciplinary staff in the area of head and neck
oncology. In 2006 Nadine co-authored a chapter in a Head & Neck text book.
Bena is also an experienced speech pathologist at the Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH) in Brisbane. She
has a special interest in the management of communication and swallowing disorders in head and neck
cancer patients. Bena was involved in the development of the speech pathology services in the PAH
radiation oncology unit. Bena is currently completing her PhD examining long term swallowing outcomes in
head and neck cancer patients receiving non-surgical treatment regimens. Bena has presented many
workshops, teleconferences and lectures across Queensland. She has also presented at national and
international conferences.
