Arthur Conan Doyle and the Scientific Naturalists<br />

Arthur Conan Doyle grew up in the midst of the debates<br />

surrounding evolution. In this lecture, Professor Bernard<br />

Lightman examines Doyle’s views on evolution and the<br />

Darwinists who defended the theory, from the time he<br />

was a medical student at the University of Edinburgh to<br />

his early career as a writer. Program takes place in the<br />

Elizabeth Beeton Auditorium. This is the 2013 Cameron<br />

Hollyer Lecture.<br />

Rebel Women<br />

What role did Canadian women play in the Rebellion of<br />

1837? Join author and poet Vancy Kasper for an afternoon<br />

of poetry and discussion marking the 175th anniversary<br />

of the 1837 Rebellion. Vancy reads from her fifth book,<br />

Rebel Women, written to honour and provide insight into<br />

the bravery and poignancy in the lives of women during<br />

the upheaval of the 1837 Rebellion. Vancy is a direct<br />

descendant of Joseph Shepard, one of the leaders of the<br />

Reform Party and Rebellion.<br />

Professor Jonathan Salem-Wiseman discusses the<br />

continuing influence of the ancient Greeks on the modern<br />

world. Program takes place in the Elizabeth Beeton<br />

Where do crime and mystery stories come from? Sharon A.<br />

Crawford, Writer in Residence at the Toronto branch of the<br />

Canadian Authors’ Association, discusses the origins of her<br />

plots and characters as she reads from Beyond the Tripping<br />

Point, her first collection of mystery short stories.<br />

Meredith Inksetter, University of Toronto, Art History<br />

discusses 19th and early 20th century phenomenon of<br />

mysterious appearances in photography. Program takes<br />
