It can be truly said that Enniscorthy is
famous in song and in story. In our school
days we learned of valiant deeds and
shattered dreams on Vinegar Hill. We
Designed and typeset by Peanntr6naic Teoranta, Dublin 16, Ireland ( SAC 16, Eire.
sensed the unspeakable trauma wh ich
befell a proud people w ho could no longer
suffer the yoke of slavery.
Enniscorthy in 1999 at Fleadh Cheoil
na hEireann bore testimony to the
resi I ience of the I rish race and thei r
distinctive cu lture. Amidst the echoes of
history, ou r national characteristics - music,
song, dance and language - comforted the
ghosts of the past and brought forth a rich
harvest from a scorched earth. Here is a
triumph of hope over dispair - a salute to
liberty and fraternity.
The Fleadh is a ce lebration of cul tural
survival - a ce lebration in which all ou r
people participate, joined by people from
all over the world. Music and friendship
reigned supreme in the congen ial company
of th e boys and girls of Wexford.
The Fleadh committee, in the proud
tradition of their noble ancestors, gave
unstinted serv ice to the Iri sh nation. They
knew from the very successfu l Fleadh held
in Enniscorthy in 1967 that the town has an
ambience conducive to the success of this
mammoth celebration of Irishness .
Thousands answered the clari on ca ll to
this great extravaganza of traditional arts
and excellence. Young and old, Catholic,
Protestant and Dissenter, the Irish and their
friends from abroad, all joined together in a
sp irit of cu ltural harmony which has roots
in the vis ion and hi story of the hallowed
spot which is Enniscorthy.
