Ever since the early days of fly-tying there still are few things that excite us more 

than new materials, or just finding a single hackle-feather of outstanding shape. 

But times are changing. Modern fly-tying and fly patterns don’t require the use of 

natural feathers and furs anymore. That doesn’t mean that old patterns Fluebindning don’t work. 2009 

They still do, many of them have caught fish for hundreds of years and will continue 

to do so. Some of the classic natural materials come from endangered animals and 

birds and we feel it’s just not morally right to deal with these today. 

The naturals are easily replaced by synthetic fur, hackle, flash and dubbings. Just 

check out materials like X-select Craft Fur, Polar Chenille and some of the new 

dubbings in the catalogue. 

This is just a start and there is a lot more to come! In our ranks we have some of 

the best and most innovative fly tiers in Scandinavia and we’re currently working on 

more unique GUIDELINE fly-tying products to be released in the near future.

When I was asked to put one fly pattern in I was totally 

flummox as I looked in my boxes to try and find just one 

pattern. Firstly I looked at my Loch Style boxes and there 

are a lot of them, secondly I looked at my small Stillwater 

boxes, a few less but still too many to choose from so I finally 

decided to pick some from my river box. Again I could 

not just pick one pattern but decided on a style of fishing 

and what flies I tie on first on my cast. 

The style I chose was New Zealand Style as this is the one I 

will use when I first go to a river when I cannot see any fish 

rising and it is a great way of searching out areas to find out 

where the fish are and at what level they are feeding at. 

Firstly I will tie on a tapered leader on to the end of the line then at the end of this I tie 20-30cm of Fluorocarbon and the attach the 

Clinkhammer. This is tied with strike indicator yarn as the post. This will support any nymphs you want to hang below and will also 

stand out in all light conditions. 

I will tie the next piece of flour.(50-60cm) onto the bend of the dry. This will give you direct contact with the nymph below and the 

nymph will make sure the dry fishes correctly. You can have one, two or three nymphs below the dry and it all depends on the depth 

of water you are going to fish. If I am going to use two or three nymphs below I will use a 3 turn water know to create the droppers 

and the spacing will again be 50-60cm. 

When you are fishing this method you are covering all your basis- top of the water with the dry, mid water with the middle nymph 

and deep water with the point fly.

Body: any colour you like to suite your river

Make sure if you are using two nymphs 

that the heaviest always goes on the point this way you will 

guarantee that the cast turns over every time. 

When you are fishing this method do not be in too much of a hurry to cast far make sure that you cover the water you are going to wade into first. 

Always make sure that the dry fly is big enough and buoyant enough to support the nymphs below. 

When you are fishing this cast split the river into sections and cover every area as you do not know where the fish might be. Allow the flies to drift 

down with the flow of the river but at the end of the drift do not just pick up and re-cast allow the dry to check against the current. This will make 

the nymphs come up in the water column just as a natural would and you will catch a lot of fish where most anglers would have not fished.

The dubbing blend is what makes this cased caddis pattern. Fished on a jig hook, it is the point fly in a team 

intended to be fished Czech style. The dubbing reproduces the caddis case nicely with the chopped elk and deer 

hair representing the tiny twig segments and other fibrous materials that caddis use for their cases. Fished 

Czech nymph style this fly is deadly because it fishes point up and won’t foul in the rocks and boulders. I use 

it as the point fly in a team of three so that it can be tripped across the bottom. It often produces big grayling.

Head: Firefly yellow oval bead attached to heavy mono (crimped to flatten

Being a pike fisherman with a good knowledge of prey species and lures, when I started fly fishing for pike I realised 

I could put this knowledge to good use when designing pike flies. I use a range of patterns some designed as 

attractors while others are more specific imitations of prey species. Generally I like to keep the flash subtle 

– I have found that most commercially tied pike flies have too much and this can put pike off. 

The fly is tied by layering alternately across the back, the sides and the belly. The fly is ten trimmed to shape using 

scissors to create a willow-leaf profile when 

seen from below, above and from the side. This 

shape is the ‘footprint’ seen by pike when they 

are stalking live fish and is very important as 

is the movement of the fly by creating a long, 

tapered tail. I have caught lots of big pike on 

this fly.

have a slightly curved point which gives great

The treble tube has a small, straight and oblong

kildeelver. Denne kroktypen egner seg spesielt godt til 

klekkere av for eksempel døgnfluer og mygg. Black nickel 

finish. 

TMC 112Y er en lett tørrfluekrok, med samme finish som 

212Y. Skaftet er 2,5x kort, og krokgrapet 2X vidt. Kroken 

er svært godt egnet til imitasjoner av mygg, maur og tørre 

døgnfluer. Binder du lettdressede fluer av f.eks CDC så er 

den ypperlig! 

Begge de nye krokene har svært liten mothake som er lett 

å klemme ned for den som fisker fang og slipp.
