Module 2– Unit 2
Direct Hammering
Figure 17: Hammer and Dolly in Use
Direct hammering is in fact the process of planishing and the body
repair worker uses it as a finishing process after the work has been
pre-shaped and roughed out. It is the essential practice to master
and develop as a result of continuous experience.
Before using the hammer and
dolly together, it will be
necessary to clean the
underside of the portion of
the wing or panel on which
you will be working. Body
panels and wings are covered
with a sound deadening
material which must be
removed before starting the
work. If you fail to clean the
surface of this material it will
not only stick to your dolly
but will to a large degree
destroy its effectiveness.
